I've started playing Sea of Thieves about a month ago and have largely been the player that tried to avoid PvP as much as possible because I'm terrible at it. After seeing many of your tip videos, it gave me new tactics to practice as well as teaching some features of the game that I didn't even know exist. But more than just the tips, your emphasis on having the right attitude towards PvP was probably the biggest selling point for me. I set sail now to engage with SoT the way it was meant to be played. I'm gonna get my butt handed to me many times and learn along the way. Thank you for your contribution to the game and to the community and maybe we can duke it out sometime!
If you have trouble with your sword, your sense is probably too low or too high, find the right sense and it feels good to use. Edit for clarification, if your sword feels sluggish, it’s too low, if it’s too twitchy, it’s too high. Just experiment until you find the right sense for you.
I always move the jump button from "A" button to a shoulder button or right-stick click. This way you can jump without taking your thumb off of the right stick, improving your melee significantly. Just a tip.
To add to those tips - its VERY importnat to rebind your jump from A to something else, for example to RB, so that you can actually jump and look around at the same time. Otherwise you have to take your thumb off from the right joystick to press the jump button, and thats not something you want to have to do during close quater combat.
The best part about being on a controller/xbox is that I have access to xbox only servers and BELIEVE ME. Killing people on those servers is the easiest chore ever.
My guy dissing controller! I’ve been playing on controller all my life, especially SoT and not to toot my own horn, I am very good at pvp. I against pc players all the time and don’t have many issues so u controller players out there don’t be discouraged. It may take a little longer to learn but we are at less of an advantage than u might think. A pc player trying controller will always have a rough time compared to controller players who have been using controller for years
Console player here who plays SOT on PC. I have tried my damnedest to switch to mouse and keyboard but I just can't do it, I'm too comfortable with the controller. I've been playing video games since "Nintendo thumb" was a thing...so much so my left thumb has a huge callus from controller playing. I prefer the controller in SOT but have to admit, love all the keybinds you have accessible with the keyboard and mouse. Plus I aim better and have better accuracy with the mouse than I do with the controller, problem is, all that goes out the window when pvp occurs, my crutch will always be the controller, it's been apart of me for far too long, lol.
A few things about this subject: - I know on Xbox that you can basically disable Cross Play & ensure that you only play with other Xbox players on controller. This alone really evens the playing field. - Conversely, you can plug a mouse & keyboard into your Xbox and SoT supports it. If you think MnKB is the better input method (and it might be b/c controller gets zero aim assist), you can use it while playing on console if you want!
So I’m an Xbox player that’s never played K&M but did change up my buttons a little and it’s helped me tremendously. My (changed from default) keybinds are: jump R3, food to RB, throwables Left Dpad, bucket up dpad, spyglass R dpad, pirate chat A. Everything else is default but those have been literal game changers for me

When I use controller, I have my food hotkeyed to the right stick. I agree RB is a good spot but imo RS is better because it doesn't require rebinding the quest radial, nor does it get in the way of combat at all. Its a very convenient keybind. I suggest trying this setup if you haven't thought of it.
So I would add that playing with a PS4 controller and making use of Steam's controller customization menu and adding 2 seperate touch menus to the touchpad and add up to 12 keybinds per menu(I use 7 on one for my recording/screenshot options, 4 on the other for in-game keybinds) is OP. On the right touch menu I have a Push to talk button, a push to talk Speaking trumpet button(it hits the speaking trumpet shortcut and emulates holding down the trigger when you press and hold it), and the bottom two are food and throwables. I have food set up the same as the speaking trumpet so if I press and hold it it'll auto eat, so no need to equip food then hit another button. On the left I have bound shortcuts for screenshots and recording, and Nvidia instant replay keybinds to catch toxic players using slurs. Also the HUD toggle. Also when using steam's controller menu, you can bind R3(the right stick push button) to repeatedly hitting jump at the perfect time if you hold it down. So when you press and hold that button, you'll be jumping repeatedly when in combat. It's great because in times of tension it comes natural to hold it down while moving. The last part is that with Steam's controller menu you can fine tune response curves and sensitivity down to the T. I'm able to move around with delicacy, but can turn around fast if I need to. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it. You can also create custom mapping profiles you can activate based on activity, etc. I have an entertainment PC, not a classic gaming computer with a desk, so I play throughout my apartment using Steam Links and PS4 controllers. I'd never look back and haven't found a game that I can't use a PS4 controller on. Blurbs, I'd implore you to check those options out. I wouldn't mind walking through these advanced options visually if you'd like.
I use controller and mouse simultaneously but I have been doing it since Wrath of the Lich King so it's second nature by now. As long as you use a decent mouse with programmable buttons you aren't really at much of a disadvantage. Sure I'm only really using half of my controller most of the time but you can map less important things like emotes to the other buttons. Personally I prefer to use the controller exclusively when fishing, much nicer experience and the haptic feedback lets you know instantly when the fish changes direction.
100% agree with you about the fishing on controller, how anyone can fish on the mouse/keyboard is beyond me. I tried using the mouse/keyboard combo with SOT but just couldn't get used to it, I'm a console player for life...well every console but the Xbox, not a fan. I play SOT on my pc using a PS4 controller, lol.
Nice vid, but this kinda feels like you didn't spend too much time finding the right setting for yourself Blurbs. So as a seasoned PC controller player, here are my personal controller Remaps for you all. 1. Map your jump to clicking the right stick down. It makes bunny hopping & sword lunging very easy on controller, and it allows you to aim while jumping. 2. Map your all radials to your d-pad. mapping items to your d-pad means you have to stop moving with the right stick to press a d-pad button for food, radials are less risky there. 3. Map push to talk on the d-pad button still free after all radials have been mapped, I use up myself. This makes toggling it easy 4. Map food and throwables to the X and A buttons. See #2 for reasoning. 5. Map primary interact to clicking the left stick down. This makes it so interacting with something can be done with the same stick you use to look at it. 6. Map sprint to right bumper. You're never ever trying to shoot AND start sprinting simultaneously. Plus, the short finger travel time means you can start sprinting and be ready to fire quickly. 7. Raise your sensitivity to max, and drop your controller's input dead zone to the lowest setting so you can turn quickly for drag scopes and sword swiping. These are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. But these have allowed me to hang with quite a few sweaty crews of pirates. I have more fun this way than with the default mapping, and my hands don't hurt after too! Its just fantastic if you, like me, are a control-lord.
Tbh I prefer playing with controller compared to keyboard and mouse, because if I’m with a wireless I can just lay down on the couch or sit however I like to be comfortable
Controller sweat here. I went from default sensitivity to maximum when I decided to double down on PVP, it was tricky at first but quickly got used to it, don't be shy with it basically! I think it's better personally to crank it right up that do it gradually in increments but as Blurbs alludes to, it's about what works for you.
Maximum sensitivity isn't too hard to get used to in fact the only weapon I don't have Max sensitivity on is when aiming with the Eye Of Reach scope which I believe I have it dropped to 7
controller pvp can be really bad UNLESS you bind your jump to something different from A. for example, bind it to one of the bumpers, or if you have a controller with pedals, bind it to one of those so you can aim and jump at the same time. Helps a ton in sword combat.
It takes a while man, believe me. Started using a controller and recently decided to up my game to KB and mouse. It felt so wrong and so alien. But I got used to it. But if you feel more comfortable and able with a controller, all power to you my man.
Honestly killing pc players aren’t hard to do on controller. If you put practice into how you play, double gun, swording, and movement, you can beat a pc player easily. All tips in the video are good, but one tip I give to everyone is Arena. Arena will train you in aim, movement, naval and game knowledge. Tdming(team death match) will train your movement and aim. Camping boats will train your movement on boats as well as train your aim.
I play with controller and I am really getting better and better in naval. I never thought I could solo Flame-heart and yesterday I did! Combining controller with key shortcuts on PC and using mouse to aim pistol feels like cheating those who are only controller. Sword combat is still a big disadvantage though.
I have my food on dpad up and throwables on right stick click. Dpad left and right are used to turn the pages of your tall tales and stuff if you care about that.
DONT BIND FOOD TO RIGHT BUMPER! Its easier to bind it to the right stick down this way you can pull food out without unbinding anything and its so much easier because your thumb is always on it.
I play on controller.. I’ve tried mouse and keyboard and I’m just a better pirate on controller as far as movement and combat. I do have a keyboard set up as well for communication and some extra key binds. I will say whoever at Rare set up the default settings on controller needs to do better. I spent months of trial and error to set up my buttons on controller in order to have the ability to compete against the pc/ mouse and keyboard players. Most players I meet are shocked when they find out I play on controller. You can be an effective pirate on controller but it definitely takes time to get your buttons just right.
Surely raising the sensitivity up may seem good at first, but after 2 years sot i find it more useful playing on lower sensitivities But still a nice video
The way I see it; if you started playing video games on a keyboard and mouse, of course it’ll be easy for you to play a video game. Because that’s how you play. Vice versa for controllers. I grew up playing Xbox and played a lot of games on DS, so yeah I’m used to the controls on Xbox
Can you make a guide on getting supplies? You're guides have helped me a lot but I still have a lot to learn through experience and learning when to take fights or leave for more supplies
You want to have more than 45 wood at least, cause that's the default larger ships spawn with, you can always snatch some supplies from your enemy crew, if the fights started 9 times out of 10 you're not going to be able to leave for a resupply. At the outpost when you spawn buy a wood crate, cannonball crate and storage crate from the merchant fill the crate with supplies from the island, fill your pockets whenever you're on an island and when you sink skellie ships grab their storage crate, rowboats will usually have supplies as well, I also recommend keeping supplies in your barrels not crates
The worst part about key binds is I am already so used to flinging my right stick up for food and left for bucket. And now if I try to change it would be a waist of time.
Please help. I’m a new player. I have played daily to practice. I can sink ghost ships. I have defeated the kraken and megalodon. But when it comes to a REAL person? I can’t do it. I usually am ok at hitting their ships with cannons - until that moment that they board me. Then I’m killed and killed over and over 😅. I’ve watched all the videos. Any more tips? (I’m on controller)
Weapon pvp is difficult for me on controller, as I never get a chance to practice. My friends just do pve stuff and one of em just hides when any pvp or fighting is involved. All I can say is try to pay as much attention to the pvp tips as you can and use pistol if you want consistency and want to practice accuracy/most tips from this channel. I also found it reloads faster I think
Try the Sloop Arena perhaps. It definitely helps you out at combat. And when it comes to boarding, just watch/listen for ladders. Obviously yes there is silent boarding but just keep an eye on your ship whenever fighting someone
Don't worry about it too much, I lost a whole rowboat full of gold hoarders vault treasure last night with 2 of my friends, we were super annoyed cuz the enemies were on pc and we were on xbox and they seemed to walk all over us (it was 2v3 and they killed all 3 of us multiple times easily). Just know you're not alone!
I find it easier to do ship combat and using guns for an Xbox player than sword combat. That’s just me. I need to figure out some better key binds though.
As a controller player that uses sword in adventure I keep my sensitivity at 10 and it’s perfect for sword. It’s makes your movement fast and too me anything less than 10 controller sensitivity feels way too slow to be good at sword combat
I've been a controller player since beta, here's my setup. Put jump on R3 (This allows you to jump and turn at the same time, you can't do that with jump as A, You could alternatively use RB now that you can get to the quest wheel from inventory wheel) Put food on A Throwables on Right Dpad I have lantern on Left Dpad but his can be anything
So you use middle finger to shoot and index to jump ? I really can’t get used to it so I do both with index finger, which is not that different from jumping with A and quickly re holding right stick 😢. Kinda stuck here 😅
I play on xbox series x with a little over 100 hours, have almost always avoided pvp but tried blunderbuss sniper which helped improve my pvp loads, i am decent at the game but do you think it wise to switch to keyboard and mouse even with all these controller tips shown? (already have a razer kbm attached to my xbox but don’t really use it all that often) also how long would it typically take to gain skill on kbm
I switched from controller to MnK in destiny 2 (fps game) about 5 months ago since I love to play really fast and it only took me about a month to get as gud if not better. So if you think that the slow controller turning speed is hurting you, then feel free to switch to mnk Also idk if that’s the same for everyone but my aim is way better with MnK than controller
You are wrong on wired controllers. Controllers typically have higher poling rates and lower latency over Bluetooth, unless you overclock them. Also, you didn't mention gyro aiming. I assume you used an Xbox controller?

I have never felt at a disadvantage with a controller. I still get plenty of kills and sure I run into mouse and keyboard double gun lords from time to time but I would die just as fast to them if I was using a mouse and keyboard. Mouse and keyboard players I find typically are not as good as they think they are. Sure some are great and you are at a disadvantage but they are few and far between most are just flipping about missing shots and sword swipes just like anyone ells.

Adjusting your FOV to 90 is only good in PVP to be more aware of your sorroundings. To be able to measure distances correctly (for instance, when aiming your cannons) you need to have it as realistic (probably much lower than that) as possible. There are FOV calculators online you can use for that.
does anyone find that its almost impossible to quick scope on controller with EoR? like you can click fire all you want but wont actually shoot untill you have zoomed about 3/4 in

I hate some pc players that just double gun and absolutely spin their mouse around to quickly shoot and win a fight, it’s less fun. I mean in the 1800 they did not double gun or something like that, Controller is way better for the experience and is a lot more fun!

i use claw grip instead as i have big hands
An important thing to note on controller is that you can turn the wheel way slower for easy centering and death spirals.

I would put jump other than something your right thumb has to reach for I.e. left bumper so you can continue to aim as u jump

Sensitivity part is very wrong for most people, if you want to be able to aim properly I strongly recommend 6-6.5
Actually no high sensitivity is just your regular look you can adjust the sensitivity for each guns aim individually in the settings

Dude this just happened to me, I went to grab food and jump at the same time. I then pulled out a map just to get blundered and lose the fight.
I play controller on p.c I've tried to go the mouse and keyboard but i just can't get used to it.
It takes a while man, believe me. Started using a controller and recently decided to up my game to KB and mouse. It felt so wrong and so alien. But I got used to it. But if you feel more comfortable and able with a controller, all power to you my man.

Honestly killing pc players aren’t hard to do on controller. If you put practice into how you play, double gun, swording, and movement, you can beat a pc player easily. All tips in the video are good, but one tip I give to everyone is Arena. Arena will train you in aim, movement, naval and game knowledge. Tdming(team death match) will train your movement and aim. Camping boats will train your movement on boats as well as train your aim.

I play with controller and I am really getting better and better in naval. I never thought I could solo Flame-heart and yesterday I did! Combining controller with key shortcuts on PC and using mouse to aim pistol feels like cheating those who are only controller. Sword combat is still a big disadvantage though.
I have my food on dpad up and throwables on right stick click. Dpad left and right are used to turn the pages of your tall tales and stuff if you care about that.
DONT BIND FOOD TO RIGHT BUMPER! Its easier to bind it to the right stick down this way you can pull food out without unbinding anything and its so much easier because your thumb is always on it.

Agreed. I use right analog click for food. Throwables are up in the d pad. Wood right d pad and bucket left d pad.
your aim down sight to 100 that way it won't be slower than your normal looking around. that helped me so much
I play on controller.. I’ve tried mouse and keyboard and I’m just a better pirate on controller as far as movement and combat. I do have a keyboard set up as well for communication and some extra key binds. I will say whoever at Rare set up the default settings on controller needs to do better. I spent months of trial and error to set up my buttons on controller in order to have the ability to compete against the pc/ mouse and keyboard players. Most players I meet are shocked when they find out I play on controller. You can be an effective pirate on controller but it definitely takes time to get your buttons just right.
Push to talk should be bound somewhere as well, maybe R3 if all your D pad is taken. Microphones make the game more fun.

Surely raising the sensitivity up may seem good at first, but after 2 years sot i find it more useful playing on lower sensitivities

The way I see it; if you started playing video games on a keyboard and mouse, of course it’ll be easy for you to play a video game. Because that’s how you play. Vice versa for controllers. I grew up playing Xbox and played a lot of games on DS, so yeah I’m used to the controls on Xbox

Can you make a guide on getting supplies? You're guides have helped me a lot but I still have a lot to learn through experience and learning when to take fights or leave for more supplies
You want to have more than 45 wood at least, cause that's the default larger ships spawn with, you can always snatch some supplies from your enemy crew, if the fights started 9 times out of 10 you're not going to be able to leave for a resupply. At the outpost when you spawn buy a wood crate, cannonball crate and storage crate from the merchant fill the crate with supplies from the island, fill your pockets whenever you're on an island and when you sink skellie ships grab their storage crate, rowboats will usually have supplies as well, I also recommend keeping supplies in your barrels not crates
stop at seaforts with storage crates whenever possible
One other thing, if you are on Xbox you can check recently played with and see who is getting close to you

The worst part about key binds is I am already so used to flinging my right stick up for food and left for bucket. And now if I try to change it would be a waist of time.
Please help. I’m a new player. I have played daily to practice. I can sink ghost ships. I have defeated the kraken and megalodon. But when it comes to a REAL person? I can’t do it. I usually am ok at hitting their ships with cannons - until that moment that they board me. Then I’m killed and killed over and over 😅. I’ve watched all the videos. Any more tips? (I’m on controller)
Weapon pvp is difficult for me on controller, as I never get a chance to practice. My friends just do pve stuff and one of em just hides when any pvp or fighting is involved. All I can say is try to pay as much attention to the pvp tips as you can and use pistol if you want consistency and want to practice accuracy/most tips from this channel. I also found it reloads faster I think

Try the Sloop Arena perhaps. It definitely helps you out at combat. And when it comes to boarding, just watch/listen for ladders. Obviously yes there is silent boarding but just keep an eye on your ship whenever fighting someone
Don't worry about it too much, I lost a whole rowboat full of gold hoarders vault treasure last night with 2 of my friends, we were super annoyed cuz the enemies were on pc and we were on xbox and they seemed to walk all over us (it was 2v3 and they killed all 3 of us multiple times easily). Just know you're not alone!
I've been on controller for 19 years, you just need to mess with your settings, and ramp it up until you can play the game at max. (Or close to max)

I find it easier to do ship combat and using guns for an Xbox player than sword combat. That’s just me. I need to figure out some better key binds though.

I had to start playing SoT on Xbox after my laptop refused to do anything but play the opening loading screen for 90 minutes.
As a controller player that uses sword in adventure I keep my sensitivity at 10 and it’s perfect for sword. It’s makes your movement fast and too me anything less than 10 controller sensitivity feels way too slow to be good at sword combat
I've been a controller player since beta, here's my setup.
Put jump on R3 (This allows you to jump and turn at the same time, you can't do that with jump as A, You could alternatively use RB now that you can get to the quest wheel from inventory wheel)
Put food on A
Throwables on Right Dpad
I have lantern on Left Dpad but his can be anything

So you use middle finger to shoot and index to jump ? I really can’t get used to it so I do both with index finger, which is not that different from jumping with A and quickly re holding right stick 😢. Kinda stuck here 😅

I play on xbox series x with a little over 100 hours, have almost always avoided pvp but tried blunderbuss sniper which helped improve my pvp loads, i am decent at the game but do you think it wise to switch to keyboard and mouse even with all these controller tips shown? (already have a razer kbm attached to my xbox but don’t really use it all that often) also how long would it typically take to gain skill on kbm
I switched from controller to MnK in destiny 2 (fps game) about 5 months ago since I love to play really fast and it only took me about a month to get as gud if not better. So if you think that the slow controller turning speed is hurting you, then feel free to switch to mnk

You are wrong on wired controllers. Controllers typically have higher poling rates and lower latency over Bluetooth, unless you overclock them. Also, you didn't mention gyro aiming. I assume you used an Xbox controller?

I have never felt at a disadvantage with a controller. I still get plenty of kills and sure I run into mouse and keyboard double gun lords from time to time but I would die just as fast to them if I was using a mouse and keyboard. Mouse and keyboard players I find typically are not as good as they think they are. Sure some are great and you are at a disadvantage but they are few and far between most are just flipping about missing shots and sword swipes just like anyone ells.
Couldn’t have said it better my self pc players can diss controllers all they want but when it comes down to it, it’s who has more skill

Adjusting your FOV to 90 is only good in PVP to be more aware of your sorroundings. To be able to measure distances correctly (for instance, when aiming your cannons) you need to have it as realistic (probably much lower than that) as possible. There are FOV calculators online you can use for that.
