Wow they're able to get an amazing sound out of those fiberglass Tubas!

  • @CorvetteCoonass

Brass sousaphones will resonate better than fiberglass for obvious reasons. Yes, lower octaves on a sousaphone are much more difficult to be heard than higher octaves. Fiberglass or not, it will take a lot of air to be heard on the lower octaves at the same power as the upper octaves. Which is why most sousaphone/tuba sections split the octaves among each other in a 2:1 (low:high) ratio.

I remember we had 4 FiberBrass Jupiters at my high school. I played one my senior year and it just paled in comparison to the old Conns and Holtons we had. My first year there I played a Holton, the next year I played a Conn 14K, and my senior year I played a Jupiter. The brass horns are superior (more resonance), but different strokes for different folks as they say.

Sousaphones hold the band together. I played a fiberglass and it played really awesome. There is nothing wrong with fiberglass. BTW we got a superior on the mpa that year.

Actually fiberglass sousaphones are about the same in price as the brass ones depending on the brand that is purchased. If I was Southern's Director and we were in line for some new tubas, I would get the new FiberBrass Sousaphones by Jupiter. They have the look and weight of fiberglass but the sound of regular brass. They can be seen on the SamAsh website

@finneyboy50 VSU uses Conn 20K sousas, and those are 6/4 size sousaphones. So naturally they're going to be bassy and loud. I've played King brass and fiberglass sousas, they put out the same volume and they're both 4/4 size sousaphones. The bigger the tuba/sousa, the darker and louder it's going to be. The smaller the tuba/sousa, the brighter and thinner it's going to be. Valve bore is of small importance when compared to the bugle size.

@Rilo12 I must agree fiberglass horns sound hollow because sound is created by vibrations since they are so stiff fiberglass will never resonant the same as brass but them boys sound descent though...

@sousa07ful the big thing about fiberglass sousaphones is they produce a nice tone on high notes (it's really crisp) but brass sousaphones are much "warmer" in tone

if you want clean, go drum and bugle, this is about power, pure and simple. if you don't care for the methodology that's probably because you're not part of the demographic it was designed for. the folks that are supposed to enjoy it do, everyone else, find another channel, trust me, we won't miss you

@wilshawn91 straight up bruh, I love The Human Jukebox to death. It just kills me when people come on SU videos criticizing. If you think they are so horrible, then don't leave a comment. Now I respect BCU a lot for the simple fact that it's a HBCU and SU deserves the same respect. And to the people talking about "their plastic tubas", you're not the one playing on them so don't worry about them.

Consider the camera, this is 2008, I was using a 2005 Model Samsung DV camcorder Unlike Today's High Def Video and Audio devices, the Mic is internal and directional. The camera catches what's directly in front of it more than any other sound. I'm less than 6 feet away from the tuba players at a Low angle, the sound changes as I move backward. The Audio is as standard as it gets for that era.
Also, consider those guys are on fiberglass horns. They don't give off the rattling brass effect and as they do now with the Hybrids.

I played the tuba/sousaphone for many years. There is a huge difference in sound between fiber glass and brass. If they did this on brass sousaphones, musically speaking, it would sound terrible. So much vibration with the addition of metal on metal vibration. Not to sound racist but where I am from, you can tell the difference between a band that has majority African Americans from Caucasians. The African Americans go for power while the Caucasians go for style and finesse.
