Outer Wilds is a great game, but the music is what stuck with me and it affected me in a weird way. It's what keeps me thinking about the whole experience as something truly beautiful and unforgettable. Even just that one minute of music in the main menu can be listened to over and over, and it still kinda gets to me. I also like how it ends with like a cockpit alarm. It's all really impressive actually, because you wouldn't normally have this kind of music in a space themed game. Seriously great job dude.
About a week after finishing the game, I lost my father. The music, experience, and message of the game were incredible to begin with but now I can't hear the music of the game without getting emotional. It is both a terrible and great thing. Painful nostalgia. Its essentially what was meant to be achieved with the game. So thank you. Although the music is painful, it is gorgeous. It makes me feel alive and overwhelmed with the fragility of life. I guess what it does, is give me clarity.
You really did an excellent job giving the game a distinct personality and directing the feelings of the player via music. Whatever you go on to do in your career, I suspect your work on Outer Wilds is gonna remain your crown jewel for a good long while.
I hope to keep moving forward with what I believe in. And I can't say this enough, this has been such a big deal for me with the reception on this music and I really do hope it helps move things forward with my music. This all means so much to me.
Don't know if this will mean much, but man you are an incredible musician. 14.3 billion years is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. I've listened to it often over the past few years and it's emotional punch makes me stop overthinking everything and just feel. Your music helps me heal, thank you for that.
Your music is one of the main reasons that i love this game so much... You're extremely talented and i'm surprised that you aren't more well known. I've been attempting to make music of my own, and you are a HUGE inspiration, so thank you for all your amazing work.
Thanks so much - that really means a lot to hear, This game has been such a big part of my life for so long and it's always been a dream of mine to help inspire others to make music.
I don't play banjo, but soundtrack is amazing. When I finally got to the Sun station, found namai who died million years ago watching sun and ambient dropped - that was breathtaking. I never experienced anything even close to this. Thank you.
Just bought and finished Outer Wilds last week, and it has become one of my favorite games ever as well as one of my favorite game soundtracks ever!! Also really cool to see that you were inspired by American Football, I've always loved their first LP!
What makes Outer Wilds such a beautiful piece of art is that the story telling, the visuals, and, especially, the music blend together so well. The way your music is being used to advance the story around the last campfire of the game is amazing.
I just finished the game last night. I cant even begin to explain the feeling ive had along with me through this whole journey. No other game has been able to give me since i was a small child. The first time i heard this tune using my signalscope i got such a big smile on my face. Like you said in the noclip doc, its an optimistic tune that slowly turns melancholy the longer you listen. Truly an amazing tune and game. I thank you and everyone whos had a part in this game for making it the most memorable game ive ever played.
So glad to see you again! The music you have made for Outer Wilds is truly amazing, somehow you've managed to catch all the nuances of being a camper in space perfectly. The game definitely wouldn't be the same without you :) Looking forward to seeing more from you! (I'd also love to see something about what effects and pedals you've used by the way!)
Dude, I almost cried (I tried really hard not to i dunno why) when I heard this song with all the characters at the end of Outer Wilds. Truly a special moment I will never forget. Thank you for the OST, its one of the best I've ever heard!
Finished the (masterwork of a) game yesterday. Aside from the mindbending ending, I couldn't stop thinking about the music you've produced for the game, this is an instant classic in my opinion and the tunes you have written elevate the experience to such a high degree. Favorite is "Travelers" and will forever remind me of aligning all the planets in my signalscope for the first time and realizing just what a journey I was about to embark on. Thank you and Cheers from Denmark! Did you play every Instrument yourself?
@@andrewprahlow Really inspiring! I've played guitar for some years and always wanted to try and pick up the Banjo, such a cool instrument. Hope to hear more of your music in the future, all the best - cheers
What I wouldn't give to experience this soundtrack and this game again. Thanks for helping make this game one of the greatest I'll ever play, because without the music it just wouldn't be elevated to such a level.
Your ability to communicate feeling through music is astounding - the distinct, vivid emotions I get from the music you create stands as a testament to how clever the composing is.
I think the community would love it if you revived this series! People really enjoy this sound track. Youve done an amazing job. Thanks for the hard work!!
I haven't listened to Post Rock in a few years, but I absolutely love the soundtrack to Outer Wilds. I've genuinely had the main menu theme stuck in my head for four days straight. It's magical. Thanks for your work.
Bro, the themerin addition to the Travellers track makes me cry, it's so adequate and beautiful. I think half of what makes Outer Wilds so beautiful is your music.
Thanks for your work man, aside of my colosal love for OW, when I finished it I still listened to the OST and kinda separated it from the game and put it in some other special place in my hearth, specifically 14.3 billion years and travellers became something weird and obtained an entirely different meaning for me, your music became something bigger than just music, it became sadness, happiness and nostalgia; it became memories and curiosity for the future, and it became a calm voice telling me to keep walking because everything is going to be okay. Thank you.
This soundtrack has a reall nostalgic and outdoors theme that really hits me. I hope to see more music like this in the future. My personal favorite is Morning Cello.
Proper legend! Been playing guitar 18 years and this is the first time I've seen the composer of a game soundtrack actually sit down and talk you through their song. For someone like myself who can't read music or tab and learn everything by ear this is an absolute god-send! Great work both on the album and the videos.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for these videos and for your work making such a beautiful sound for such a beautiful game. I'd love to see a Timber Hearth instruction vid sometime. Hope you're well. Take it easy
This song and soundtrack is amazing! Thanks for your work here. It was kind of mindblowing here all these (seemingly) dissonant notes individually, and even when played slowly, then coalesce into quite possibly my favorite part/music in the game. You did a great job Andrew! I love that this game released on Game Pass. Would never have seen it otherwise and it's now one of, if not my absolute, favorite games ever. And the soundtrack is a huge part of that!
I was so moved by this song after I played this game that I made it the outro for my videos and will continue to do so for as long as I make them. Truly your work gave outer wilds a charm beyond any other game. Thank you!
Dude, your music in this game is as damn near perfect as I've ever heard. Riebeck's especially, I get such an overwhelming feel of melancholy from it. Seriously, absolutely excellent stuff.
Your work may have been one of the few game soundtracks that haven't simply helped me zone out, but instead actively compel me further in, feeling so strongly connected to the world of the game. I have a question, is the theme that played in the alpha version's Nomai ruins (I recall it in Brittle Hollow specifically) what evolved into the piano theme, or am I listening too hard for something that isn't really there?
You're actually completely correct. The piano Nomai theme in the final game, before it was fully finished, was called The Ancients theme (since there wasn't a final name for the Nomai yet), and I drew from that for the piano theme. There are places in Outer Wilds that use that 'Ancients Theme', but I rerecorded most of it while keeping that N64 style sampled space clarinet as the drone.
It's so amazing to hear the composer telling us how he created the soundtrack and how to play it. Definitely stunning what you did with the music, without you outer wilds will be a completely different game. Can't wait to hear the harmonica version of travellers!!
Your an inspiration dude. Your work on the Outer Wild's has helped reach emotional highs and lows I thought not possible through playing a video game. Thank you.
Holy shit this taught me to play it on guitar thank you. I love this song, its so peaceful and meaningful, ill never forget it or the rest of the game.

I’d love to hear you talk about your design choices as well. To me it’s so apparent that you crafted the music to transition from folksy sing along melodies to ambient, electronic choruses to encapsulate the departure from the familiar home planet to the vast unknown. The music is just like your spaceship. Fundamentally held together by finely crafted wood with a whole bunch of beautiful bells and whistles that seem foreign in nature but still beautiful.
