    I do love seeing how British webbing evolved from the early 19-hundreds till today. Probably no other nation experimented so much with different patterns of webbing, and it really can be confusing at times what all the differences are, unless you do some research. I may not aspire to collect 44- or 58-pattern webbing myself, but i find your videos on these topics very interesting nevertheless. Excelent video as always, Simon!

      I'm really glad you found the video interesting! Karkee Web is an excellent website to check out if you'd like to learn more if you haven't seen it already.

      Try British muzzle loader. He does 1861,1872,1882 Slade Wallace and p1908 pretty well lots of good shooting too. Also known as Victorian rifleman. Shoots Bakers P53 Enfields Sniders Martinis Lee Metford, Long Lee SMLE and No 4 good reloading and period drill as well.

    Brilliant video, nice to see more people looking at post war equipment. What pattern JG Tunic is that on the maniquin.

      Thank you! There are two patterns of jacket in the video, the first is part of the late war jungle kit, technically 'Shirts, Jungle' if I remember correctly, the other is the standard 1950 Pattern.

    Have you ever done a video of any of the specialist pouches used by the SAS ?
    (please ignore my user name, it has absolutely nothing to do with my military service)

    What model is the poncho the mannequin representing the Borneo confrontation wearing under the small pack?

    I carried a pattern 44 Water Bottle Carrier (With Bottle and Mug) with my Issued DPM PLCE Webbing Set up throughout most of my military career, until I was issued with MTP webbing and body armour.

      Great to know an example was in use so long, a good bit of kit so very understandable. Were you issued it in the first place or is it an item you picked up yourself?

    • @nordic0815

      It was given to me by my father, who served in the Army, so sadly not issued!! I known of many guys carrying 44 Pattern Water Bottles with Mugs and with or without Carrier on DPM PLCE webbing. Adding to this many of the guys used to Carrier DPM PLCE Webbing Entrenching Tool Pouch with 58 Issued Water Bottle in them (I do have a photo of this set up).

      Great to hear where you got it from, safe to say it's been there and back and then there and back again! Very interesting to hear they were around in numbers through the introduction of DPM PLCE, thanks for the information!

      I carried a US canteen on my 58 pattern webbing. Solely because of the tin mug, which meant I was able to ditch the kidney pouches and mess tins! It also meant my bergan was more comfortable. I kept it until they issued the S10 and the drinking straw mod. Luckily by then the Crusader Mug was available from Survival Aids!

    Interesting to see the 44 pattern pack worn with 58 pattern webbing. But perhaps hardly surprising as the 58 pattern surprisingly lacked.a small pack equivalent of its own.

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  5 років тому

      Exactly, it's particularly unsurprising in Borneo as 1944 Pattern was still available as theatre issue alongside the 1958 Pattern men were bringing with them when deployed from Europe.

    • @Grahame59
      @Grahame59 5 років тому

      @@RiflemanMoore But how on earth was such a piece of equipment allowed to be absent from 58? And even the large pack was fundamentally flawed as it could not be worn in isolation and needed the yoke which in turn needed the belt. Even the humble 08 large pack (aka valise) could be used as a standalone pack, using either L straps and 1" supporting straps or even just the 1" straps. What were the 58 designers thinking! How did it survive the Trials stage? Sorry, getting off 44 topic!

    • @RiflemanMoore

      Because armoured warfare on the plains of Europe. Many Armies in the late '50s and into the '60s seem to have had a myopic view of the modern battlefield and designed equipment only really suited to use by armoured infantry.

      58 pattern Web kits version of the small pack was the kidney pouches and bum roll.

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  5 років тому

      Indeed but this offered reduced capacity which links back in to my comment regarding the supposed deployment of infantry at this time period during the Cold War.

    Off topic-ish. If you get the chance check out Nine Men, it's a 1943 British war propaganda movie, interesting and enjoyable, with some good actual barrack scenes. It's on next Thursday. It's one of my favourite war-movies. Hopefully you have this channel. talkingpicturestv.co.uk/
