It sucks to see a team leave your city. But it really sucks to see a team leave your city and then win a championship the next year. That's what Nordiques fans had to witness. I really hope one day that Quebec City gets the Nordiques back. Either as a relocation of another team or as an expansion team, the Quebec Nordiques deserve to be an NHL team again. Quebec City is one of the cities that would make sense with an NHL team. Then we would have an even number of NHL teams in Canada.

It would be nice to see. but I find it extremely unlikely. It was already a problem 30 years ago with players not wanting to be there in a French speaking city. The French Canadian players in the NHL has dropped off significantly since then too.

I’m a Montreal Canadiens fan. The rivalry with the Quebec Nordiques was very intense. However, I was as outraged as as anyone else when Quebec City lost its team. Quebec deserves its team back, they were and are still great hockey fans. Montreal vs Quebec, I’d love to see that again.

The ultimate low blow was the Nordiques getting good towards the end of their run and then winning the Cup their very first season after leaving QC.

It’s not that simple. No way Patrick Roy would’ve been traded to the Nords. That was the key to the Cup win in 1996

@@timburr4453 it was not Roy’s choice. No way the Canadiens would have traded Roy to QC. Never. They would have traded him for a bag of pucks before sending him to a provincial rival. MTL vs QC was more bitter than CGY vs EDM, or PIT vs PHI.

    Atlanta Thrashers in 2010
    - Atlanta had a population of 5.5 million
    - lost $26 million annually
    - lost $130 million between 2005 and 2010
    - had the second worst team valuation in the league at $135 million
    Winnipeg Jets in 2011
    - Winnipeg had a population of 731 thousand
    - the province of Manitoba (1.2 million) had a population less than the city of Atlanta (5.5 million)
    - the team gained $30 million in valuation ($164 million in 2011)
    Winnipeg Jets in 2012
    - Winnipeg had a population of 741,000
    - the team gained another $36 million in valuation ($200 million)
    - and the Jets generated money for the league, unlike Atlanta which lost money annually and had to be subsidized by NHL teams that generated revenue
It is interesting how a city of 731,000 people, using Canadian currency still have a more successful team than a city in the South with 5.5 million people.
And Quebec City has more people than Winnipeg.
Winnipeg Jets were more successful than the Atlanta Thrashers. And Quebec City is larger than Winnipeg, therefore....
You can assume Quebec City (839,000 people) would also be more successful than Atlanta was.
OR a team in Quebec City, would be more profitable for the league than a team in Arizona that lost $115.2 million between 2013 and 2023.

To be fair, the Canadiens organization would also be against them returning as well. Adding a team in Quebec City means that the Habs will surely lose a portion of their fanbase living outside of Montreal.
