  • In a dystopian future America, a team of journalists race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. Writer/director Alex Garland brings a potential cautionary tale with his new action drama Civil War. Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman. Is Civil War a cautionary tale, instruction manual, or terrifying prophecy? Thanks for checking out my Civil War (2024) Movie Review!

It's hard to believe that Kirsten Dunst is 40years old. I've been watching her since she was a kid. It means I'm getting pretty old too. Glad she's been able to transform so well into an adult actress.
As far as the film goes, I'm there. You had me at Alex Garland.

She's been acting since the 90s when I first saw her in interview with a vampire and Jumanji with Robin Williams. She's had a really long successful career. Not many can succeed in Hollywood that long. I feel she can nab an Oscar with the right role.

I really loved Saving Private Ryan because of Captain Miller's last line to Private Ryan: "Earn this." May we never take the cost of war so lightly.

Jeez Chris! I’ve come to enjoy your review basically just as much as the movies/shows themselves bro! Awesome review! The amount of insight you provide and the conciseness of your delivery really give the most out of your reviews. The exact that I can obviously tell you enjoy and to some extent are biased to the movie, yet you do not rely on hyperbole or or crazily emphatic comments to get our attention. I realize I’m commenting more on your work than the movie here, but it’s because I really really appreciate your work as I can trust to get an informative review that most of the time is either spot on or neutral enough not to spoil my experience or opinion. I’m glad I landed on your channel and I hope many more do too. Kudos man! Keep it up!!!!

I just watched, or tried to at least, Grace Randolph’s very angry review. Her reaction to the movie was heavily influenced by her politics and she didn’t even try to review it objectively. She tried to impose real life people (Trump) and situations (American Civil War) into the movie and it frustrated her.
Thanks for a real movie review!

Great review! My fave and all time king of war flicks is Saving Private Ryan. Loved the first 2/3rds of Civil War. However, I felt the last 30 minutes was rushed and sloppy. Maybe it's my Army background but the attack on DC seemed hurried, cheesy and unrealistic. The journalists lack of concern for Dunst's character in her final moments also seemed especially shallow when no one paid attention to her in her final moments.

This movie, 2024 “Civil War” Movie opened… April 12th…. The firing on Fort Sumter, 4:00 AM April 12th, 1861. Loved the film. Surprisingly not political. Not much detail why, when, who but that is not the point. The effects of a Civil War… lack of transport, few cars, little gasoline, no law enforcement, no CHP (Highway patrol) , a lot more refugees I would expect. Big Cities need huge amounts of food and goods to be delivered and with little trucking, massive starvation! The 1st CW, the South had huge problems with food shipments breaking down by 1864… worn out trains and military taking most civilian wagons and horses. The South also had local militia and ruffians take over and was dangerous moving around. The most dangerous part in a war (civil or not) is the beginning and the end… when people are settling scores and filling up the mass graves…. Before peace breaks out

The movie starts out in episode (2) which means you came to that conclusion without having seen the prequel . The prequel of the full script clearly explains what lead up to the civil war. 1. It begins with Mr. T. loosing his court trial and being sent to prison. 2. The maga movement will see this as rigging another election. 3. Within Mr. B's first year in office during his second term, the immigration crisis goes out of control. 4. The maga movement in California & Texas unite to close the borders by forming the Western Forces patriot militia.. 5. The script explains that after 2024 the two party system is broken and from that split become the (nationalist) & (loyalist) parties. 6. By Mr. B's 2nd year in office Alaska will succeed from the union. 7. Once Alaska succeeds the loyalist party will form their own militia to try and prevent other states from succeeding. 8. By Mr. B's 3rd term in office, Mr. RD will allied with other nationalist to form the the Florida Alliance to help the Western forces fight against the Loyalist movement. 9. By Mr. B's 4th year in office the entire country will be in such turmoil, that the country will not be able to hold another presidential election and Mr. B's cabinet will stay in place for a (3rd) term. 10. Within Mr. B's 3rd term he will BAN the Free Press and and only allow what the nationalist party calls the fake news medias to broadcast his messages. 11. By the ending Mr. B's first year in office of his 3rd term (civil war) will spread across America. THIS is where we see this MOVIE begin. The first part of the script was deem to controversial so it was discontinued.

Compelling review; thank you! Love the director and cast. The film will be criticized by some who believe a film can cause divisions when those distractions are generally orchestrated from on high (both bought-and-paid-for corporate-capture political sides in the US) so that the divisively smaller daily problems take our eyes off the bigger monetary systemic-failure picture.
Civil War as film hopefully will encourage people to think for themselves---instead of following one side or the other politically in an illusory sense of belonging there and having some vacant hope for one-sided change through an overall economic system in the throes already of failure.
Call it communism as for Chinese billionaires in 2024 or call it capitalism as for American billionaires, it's a now corrupted system regular working people did not make. It has morphed into being essentially the same, and not for us, at the highest elite global levels where big decisions on behalf of their BIG money get made outside democratic or other political process. The global billionaires quietly jockey for power over the top wealth system among themselves, but have more in common across national lines than they have in common w/ regular people of their own countries. THIS is what they're protecting for themselves with all the identity and similar cultural divisions fomented by their media and social programs designed to divide atop the fault lines of people's personal and regional beliefs.
From the trailers and reviews of Civil War, I'm already upping my game for the backyard perennial garden. And the local face-to-face contacts. Also that sheriff's election might be more important than we'd realized. Not even sure 2024 pres. (puppet) voting matters at all at this point --- the propaganda machine behind the scenes (through informal networks of money, contacts and power) is in effect every day to generate more divisive symptoms. But initiating literal killing and maiming war is never the answer.
War is only the more horrific among divisive distractions for regular people, as the powers that shouldn't be don't send their kids to fight and die, and those worldly powers privately own transportation resources to stay out of the line of fire themselves.
What can we do? See clearly. Quit following the externally managed herd. Consciously trust the Infinite, aka Love both tough and tender, instead. Jesus after all never taught going to war but did curse "woe" for hypocrites and those in authority who mislead people, and he detached from harm as long as possible --- tough love, not just tender.
We don't have much guidance from Jesus on defending the innocent during war initiated by others, but the story of his stopping a mob from stoning a woman "caught" in adultery, but not her partner, suggests he would recommend defensively standing up to bullies including during war when they're in front of us. The particular distinction between initiating aggression and defending against it goes to trusting the power of infinite Love, not just tender but tough, in particular situations as they may arise. Beyond the scope of this comment. Probably beyond the scope of the film, too. (We can consider Jesus outside the authoritarian frame of organized religion, instead as the voice of a movement of regular people seeking change 2,000 years ago, similar to the change we might prefer for today's modern morphed imperialism.)
Btw, at this stage of the individual and collective political journey, online I now only state, never debate. The comment's for anybody who's had a sense that what I stated might make sense, but not yet been validated in thinking so.
If you read this and disagree vehemently with an urge to express yourself, well God bless the 1st Amendment, but I won't debate you by responsive comment. We're each currently empowered to think for ourselves, and state our opinions true or not.
We can also change our minds, but online debate cannot accomplish that given the cold medium (cue Marshall McLuhan) and not having face-to-face contact. So it's not personal; I no longer debate online w/ anybody. Love (tough and tender) to all.

The character of Jessie was just plain irritating. A pushy me, me, me wanting to get her fame shot and literally getting in the way of the military and putting their lives at risk. Bürgerkrieg....
    Der Untergang....
    Stark...
The scenes of devastation at Washington DC are reminiscent of Berlin in Oliver Hirschbiegel's epic film 🎬 Der Untergang (Downfall).
Der einzige Widerspruch liegt ausserhalb des Films: Was kommt zuerst!? Ein Atomwaffenangriff, der DC verwüstet, oder dieser?!
    Very much like Quentin Tarantino....
    Here, it's even more....
Epic, sporadic, intense, unmediated, eliminationist violence. Gunshots, grievous bullet wounds, blood loss, trauma and death. No scope of human agency. It's as if the origin of violence is transcendent. Negotiating terms without guns is fatal. Negotiating while wielding guns is futile and redundant. Therefore, make way for the sheer force & flow of violence.
    The language....
Viktor Klemperer wrote ✍️ about LTI.... Lingua Tertii Imperii.... The language of the Third Reich. Similarly, English is now the language of war, _le Langue du Guerre_ .

was glad to hear it was apolitical, I was concerned by that aspect being a large part to play in it. Myself being conservative etc. Glad that it sounds like it'll be more of a nihilistic horror war film and warning then a political preaching sermon at one specific side.

    • @markjd4
      @markjd4 3 місяці тому +4

Conservative here too, but I thought the movie was excellent. While there are some mildly annoying hints that Garland wants to draw parallels between Nick Offerman’s President and Trump, the movie does not dwell on this. Essentially, the President is just an authoritarian dictator - probably on the right. We don’t learn much else. Moreover, the behavior that you see the rebel factions engage in does not make them seem any better. There’s even a reference to “Portland Maoists” having taken over the northwest. This could be interpreted as a snipe at the far left just as easily as Offerman’s character can be seen as a snipe at the far right.

It's cowardly making a civil war movie without addressing what the war was being fought over. It didn't have to be left vs right it could have been a completely fabricated political party that rises up and maybe is a combination of both sides. But leaving it ambiguous I'd a cop out.

i just watched this film and i don't agree with the take that this film is apolitical. the film definitely takes a stance but is really quiet about those opinions in a way that i can only describe as cowardly. taking the position that "a civil war would be really bad" and "people are capable of terrible things" says really nothing about anything. The performances are really good though and the sound mix is incredible and the sense of unease and dread is totally there. but while this film is stark regarding conflict and war, it is absolutely maudlin in its treatment of journalists, the purpose of journalism and the defunct "this is the job" statement. but in the end, if you look closely and listen carefully it isn't really saying all that much and i found that disappointing. it's a well composed and artfully crafted film that ultimately doesn't all that much to say.

I didn't like it at all, I found the basic story (press photographers who want to get inside the center of war) absolutely incomprehensible. I found the scenes in which they actually walk around with the warring groups with their press passes to be so far-fetched (especially at the end, anyone who thinks that this is how press photos are taken from war zones has lost their mind) that I was, based on the description (Sci-Fi), hoping for some kind of twist. Otherwise it was like a typical zombie movie/series, just driving from A to B. The characters and their dynamics have been seen before, only much better, so I couldn't really empathize with anyone. Worldbuilding was also non-existent.

We just got an 100% unrealistic view on how press photos are made and some scenes "human can be monsters, violence bad"
