Center motor , between my legs in my Old Town 106 has been in 7 ft swell in the Oregon Pacific Ocean no problem. Bow mounted motor kayaks would be on the Ocean floor. That lake thunderstorm wouldn't affect me if I turned into the wind.

@ shoot at least the screens weren’t completely submerged! That was pretty close and that motor could have broken off after banging a few times. Definitely too close for comfort.

Having a bilge pump should be another tool that we should have in our kayaks to be safe those waves were rocking your kayak hard even moving you hard as well you thought quickly and made quick decisions! As someone who has been kayak fishing on the ocean for 15 years now. I would have to say that kayak strikes me as not seaworthy. If I had been on that boat on some of my trips I feel like there is a good chance I would not be here.
If you find where the water gets in, you can plug it up with plumber resin or marine sealant. Another thing you can do is stuff your hull with pool noodles. Cut them up and jam them into ever little corner.

This video has me rethinking my plan as well. I think the bow mount motor and battery up front was your demise (too much nose weight). You were spearing waves instead of riding over them. @ I was the last car in the parking lot when I got back, there was a small aluminum boat with me in that area, I left a few minutes before but then he was able to to zoom pass me with a gas motor
It CAN get "Brutal" out there, and glad you were able to make-do in that situation. Don't get me wrong, as Hobi 'Yaks are great in calmer water (not big waves and swells, though!) but they seem to get a Lot of water in their hulls, when swamped like you did. Sorry, if anything was lost or destroyed from all that water, man... (You might want to take a Power Squadron Class by the U.S.Coast Guard, as they teach how to attack big waves/swells Without burying the BOW in the water!). Main thing in your case is: you did NOT Panic. Glad you're alright.
They were doing their job just that too much. Water was coming in too fast and there are area in my kayak that water seep inside the hull. The kayak was already feel unbalance before it started tilting.

Seems like you made a mistake either not paying attention to the weather Forcast or ignoring the wind. Most would see the Forcast & not chance it. It seems like with such an expensive kayak it would have a system to prevent water from collecting. Something like a battery operated pump that detects the water level & pumps it out as needed.

one reason why I dont buy hobie. wall to shallow. get water all over the inside. You know its not a good idea to stay by the shore when its like that. Your yak is going to continue to get pound by water. better off just riding the waves a little further out near bank.

@@pxfishing you need better seal on your hatch lol. If water gets in from other places, need to seal them up. Hobie is a bit too flat on the inside, so water will puddle there for a bit before finding its way out through the scupper hole or drive hole. I been in some bad conditions with my native out in the ocean and at 152. If water dont leak into hull from the hatch, it usually just flow down into the scupper hole by the feet and back out since the yak is not flat.
Go to the 7:40 mark. Here's his issue, he was paralleling the waves so the water was washing over his Yak. He should have been cutting into the waves. Well first off, he knew a big storm was rolling in. He shouldn't have been out there on his Yak. Also, he went too far from his launching point, took too long to get back. He got himself in a really bad situation. Glad he made it back safely without destroying all his equipment. We all can learn from this event. Moral of his story/ post: no amount of fishing is worth your life or gear. Bad weather, stay home. 👍🏼👍🏼 Or do what I did, get some things knocked off the "To Do List" the wifey made for me. We all have that list. 🤦🏻♂️😂😂
Best lessons are learned from experience 😆, that 740 point my kayak was already feeling off balance. Sometimes you just have that feeling you know something isn’t right anymore. That’s why I decided to just get off and shoreshoot it. It went that day was predicted at 9 mph but we got a crazy 30 mph. Gust I I didn’t account for, but we live abd we learned
@@pxfishing Yea they usually blow from east to west not, northwest to southeast like these winds were. I did some research they are named after Mono tribe that lived in mountains, doesnt have to be anywhere near mono lake. Common in sequoia national forest and kings canyon national forest.
@@joeydang249 extra weight on the front end plus the motor pulls the front down causing you to stuff waves. A stern mount lifts the front end, think about a boat on plane. It’s great to have spot lock and such but need to be careful and know the boat’s limitations.

I don’t think so, mono wind usually blow from east to west since mono lake is north east, the wind blew west to east, but I wouldn’t know 😆
