  • In honor of #anosmia Awareness Day, I did my best to fix some of the audio issues I had with my conversation with Katie Boateng, the host of the amazing "The Smell Podcast" and founder of The Smell and Taste Association of North America! We talk about the different kinds of smell disorders, how she lost her sense of smell, my personal theory/analogy on the link between anosmia and depression, smell training, whether we consider it a disability, and much more!
I was also a guest on Katie's The Smell Podcast!

had parosmia for about 2 years now thanks to covid. 99% of smells and taste are rotting garbage and rotting onions. I suggest everyone get a good swimmers nose clip, otherwise you're setting yourself up for mal-nutrition. I'm hoping the prp treatment that a few clinics in the US have going show promise. Cutting the nerve to induce anosmia is the next go to but hopefully it wont come to that.

I'm sorry to hear that, that sounds awful. Did you mean malnutrition because foods smell awful? Does tasting it with your taste buds help things? What do you know about this lro treatment? I hope more goes into researching smell disorders now that more people have it. Best of luck.

@@danzwku Thanks bro. Yep. 99% of food is vomit inducing, the last 1% is merely tolerable to eat. I'm not being hyperbolic with my language, either. Food is inedible, so it's either use something like a nose clip to plug your nose while you eat, or don't eat, thus malnutrition. Even water smells bad, like chemicals.
When I had covid, it gave me anosmia for a few weeks, then my taste and smell came back, then a month or so later, parosmia. It just kept getting worse and worse, now I'm at the two year mark, it's just stalled. Not getting better, not getting worse. The anosmia made eating dull but at least I didn't want to puke for every meal or whenever I walked into the kitchen while someone made coffee.
Smell is what gives you the ability to taste, you tongue is what gives you the ability to detect sweetness, bitterness, how salty something is, etc etc So if I'm eating with my nose plugged, yeah, I can still taste those properties of whatever I'm consuming. As soon as I unplug my nose, that offensive, intolerable taste fills my mouth and nose.
The prp treatment, they basically take plasma from your blood, put it on a sponge that they shove up your nose and let the prp absorb into your olfactory region. Basically they're trying to use the plasma to aid in the healing of the cells that were damaged by covid, thus restoring or improving your smell. Sometimes they inject it into the same region instead of using a sponge. There was one clinic here in the US that was one of, if not the first to start using prp to try and treat people with anosmia, and to a lesser extend, parosmia due to covid. There is another clinic that more recently started using this method for the same purpose at Stanford. There's a short video on it. The title of the video is "New treatment for COVID loss of smell | 90 Seconds w/ Lisa Kim".
