  • Learn how to use an exposure calculator to make your screen prints better. We use Kiwo's Expo Check calculator (www.kiwo.com/expo-check), but the same basic rules apply for any exposure calculator. If you're struggling with your emulsion or exposure, this video will show you exactly how to use an exposure calculator so you can get better exposures.

We've covered how to coat your screens before (www.printavo.com/blog/how-to-..., which is a big part of a successful exposure. Once you've dialed that part in, you can begin investigating exactly how long you should expose your screens. Remember: different mesh counts require different exposure times, so don't assume you can use one exposure time for all of the screens in your shop.
When dialing in your exposure times, we suggest starting with double (or even triple) your estimated exposure time for your test exposure. This longer exposure time lets a higher amount of light through. The exposure calculator provides a factor to multiply your test exposure time by. So if you had a 74 second text exposure and your best results come under the 0.6 row on your exposure calculator, your target exposure time would be 44 seconds (74 sec * 0.6 = 44 sec).

Finally, always test print using your exposure calculator. It's not enough to look at the screen alone. You'll want to see how the results look on a t-shirt before you decide which exposure time is right for you.

When just starting out how do I know what time to choose for the estimated exposure time? I know ow every emulsion is different but if there an average time to start with ( using a halogen work light for me exposure)?
