Shade house cactus seedling spring update

- Echinocereus pentalophus! That's the plant that Nino keeps ID-ing and that I keep forgetting! The "Ariocarpus" that are clearly not Ariocarpus.
Oops, I forgot that I had made a winter update video in February, so ignore me saying I haven't done a shade house update in 7 months... shows how terrible my memory is. We made it to spring! Let's see how the seedlings are doing outside. I have already replaced the plastic greenhouse cover with a layer of shade cloth, so there are two layers of shade cloth total. This little greenhouse kit has lasted longer than I thought it would. I hope it lasts for a few more growing seasons.
Season transitions have always been challenging for me. I tend to adjust my care too slow. Last spring I learned the hard way that one layer of shade cloth wasn't enough, so at least I avoided making that mistake again. Let's see how we're doing as we head into the hot season in Arizona again.

Hang in there cookie. We love you!
Dawwwwwwwww we so appreciate the love, Tonya 🙏🙏💚💚💚
Great seedling update…sending positive thoughts for your sweet Cookie
Thank you so much, Patti 🙏🙏🙏
Prayers for Cookie that she will do well this week. Bless her sweet little heart.
Thank you so much, Deborah! Cookie came home yesterday. Now it's a matter of monitoring and seeing how she responds to the treatment. I so appreciate the well wishes!
Poor Cookie baby 😿 sending you lots of little cuddles and pettings
Thank you so much, we'll take all the 💚💚💚 we can get! 🤞🤞🤞
Best of luck cookie!
Many many thanks, Darrin! She got to come home yesterday! Now it's a matter of waiting and seeing how she does.
Great update on the seedlings, Jenny, they are all looking very good! A beautiful selection of cacti that you have coming there, thanks for sharing! Very best wishes for Cookie! Take care and happy growing 😊👍🌵🌵
Thank you so much, Joe! There's so much repotting to do this year omg! I really appreciate the good wishes for Cookie, we need all the good vibes we can get 🙏🙏🙏
You’ve inspired me to grow a variety of cactus seedlings . Thx for showing the challenges along with the success’. When I lose some seedlings it helps to know that it happens to others.
It really warms my heart to read this. Loss is part of the game. Matt at Arizona cactus sales told me a secret to this when I was first starting off. He said the key is to grow so many that you'll barely notice the losses and sometimes it's actually welcome because it's one less plant to have to repot 😂😂😂
You have so much patience growing all of them from seed! I think the brown patches are cold damage. I’ve had a few cacti that I left outdoors for the winter develop those spots, too.
Ohh maybe that's it, Ana! Cold damage, that makes sense since it doesn't look like rust or fungus. I'm counting on the seedlings to eventually grow out of the scars so we never even know what happened. These seedlings really do feel like set and and forget it. In the beginning they're so small and grow slow, then you turn around one day and there's so many of them!
Hello Jenny,
very nice video, I really like watching your seedlings grow. As for that particular species of "Ariocarpus", you remembered it correctly - I guessed it might be Echinocereus pentalophus, but as it grows I'm more and more certain it's actually E. berlandieri (please google it and try to compare the pictures with your seedlings). I think they could use some more intense light at this point.
That brown spots on some of your cacti are most likely consequence of the stagnant air and/or high humidity during winter period. Many people who keep their collections in greenhouses experience that problem and solution is to provide sufficient air movement - either by covering your shade house with plastic only from above to provide rain cover and assure natural flow of air through the sides or by installing fans to circulate air and airing the shed frequently. Last tray on the video is a real eye candy.
I empathize with you regarding Cookie's condition.
Best regards,
Nino
This on-going saga with my "Ariocarpus" makes me chuckle every time. I just looked up E. berlandieri... Ohh so difficult to tell if my "Ariocarpus" are more pentalophus or berlandieri. Next time I'm in the shade house I will compare more closely.
Thank you for the note about air flow. It is very possible, maybe combined with the cold it was especially bad. Now with all the plastic off the structure the plants can breath again.
Cookie is home now. I hope she starts to feel better but I'm nervous about her concurrent health issues. Let's see how she does.
Love your videos and plants. Sending love and best wishes to cookie xx
Thank you so much! I so appreciate your comment and positive vibes sent this way. I'm wafting all of the good energy towards Cookie now.
Hey you doing great with the seedlings.
Thank you! I'm trying my best. I still lose seedlings but what can you do...
Love these seedlings updates. Great job
I'm so glad you enjoy these updates, Mel! I think it's so cool that you are watching these seedlings grow up with me.
My dog left me last year and seeing her suffering from illness made me decide never to keep a mammal again! I still cry when I think about my dog. Plants are fine, at least when they die, I don't remember that long and I'm not that lost.
Anyway, I believe that Cookie will be very happy to have Jenny in her life, I hope Cookie can spend every day happily!
I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, Hsuan. One year after your loss is still very recent and very raw. It is so difficult to lose a fur baby, I've been through it twice before. My last boy left me 5 years ago and it still makes me sad. Cookie is my third fur baby and I'm not sure I can do it again, but it's too soon to say.
Thank you very much for the wonderful words. All I want is for Cookie to be able to enjoy her daily life in comfort. Let's see how this treatment goes ...
👏👏👏👏🌵🌵🌵🌵Your seeds are doing amazing! I need more space to get more seeds going!
Ha! Cactus Dan! I have lots of seeds in wait, I can't even imagine sowing more at the moment 😂😂 but it will happen (I think??)
So rewarding!! Congratulations on your fantastic, inspiring seedling collection 👏👏👏
Thank you so much! It truly is the old "set it and forget it" concept here. Are you growing some too?
@@cookiescacti just my saguaros from your encouragement. They've germinated, which is always exciting. I'm now waiting for the itty bitty catus to sprout from the middle 🤞🤞🤞thanks again for the encouragement!
@@smokiesmom2 I can't wait for you to see those first spines emerge from between those baby leaves. They are so cute and funny looking at that age!
Hi Jenny. Grow still looking good with your "system!" Consider using Copper fungicide for rust. Spray periodically. Looking forward to more of your videos!
Thank you for the tip, James! How often would you spray? Maybe spray once and see how it goes, if it's still there, spray again in a week? Or a month?
Sending lots of love to Cookie ❤
This warms my heart so much, Jan! I'm redirecting all this love and healing energy to Cookie right now. She got to come home yesterday.
I'm wishing to have a success rate like yours Another great vid. I would love to see a watering video, or routine on how you water your seedlings and plants. Wishing you well, and God be with yall
You will have lots of success growing from seed! You just have to keep at it and find the ones that do well with you. That's a good idea, a seedling watering video, hmmmm... Really there is no schedule that I follow. I pick up the pots periodically to feel the weight. When the pot feels light (because the soil medium is very light when dry) I water. In the summer it's a deep water, in the winter it's a light water. I still have seedlings rot out on me though, so it's not a fail-proof system at all.
Astrophytum were also my first cactus from seeds! It’s been two years and only now am I going to have to repot them this spring. I just bought my first Ariocarpus mostly influenced form your channel lol. It’s was only $9 from Succulent Zone idk if you have bought from there before. They have rare plants for cheap but I only recommend getting cactus and Hawarthia because the others usually don’t make it traveling for so long. Good luck to Cookie! I wish her a speedy recovery!
Thank you for introducing me to a new cactus shop! I didn't know about Succulent Zone until I read your comment. $9 for an Ariocarpus is a screaming deal, wow! Our first Astrophytum seedlings are the same age! You can see in the video how small they still are, but they're alive! Thank you so much for sending good vibes to Cookie, we need all we can get.
🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵 love it! Cactus everywhere! How them weeds coming along??? lol😂
The weeds are OUT OF CONTROL, Angel!! And the last batch of weeds are dying off and new ones coming in. Annnnddd there are some new bugs crawling all over the place, I swear it's the weather!
I whish u the best with Cookie's treatment 🙏.
Thank you so much, David 🙏 Cookie is home now. Now we wait and see...
Awww, I wish you the best of luck with Cookie's doctor's visit! I've got 2 dogs and I'd save them before I'd rescue the hubby if the house was on fire. All my best thoughts and wishes shooting your direction!
Also the seedlings look great.
Your comment on saving your dogs as top priority made me LOL so much 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you so much for the good wishes and best thoughts! Cookie is home now, let's see how she does...
Most of your seedlings are doing pretty good. I have some seedlings that are over a year old. My biggest out of them are some echinopsis Schickendanzii, and they are only about 2cm. I lost a small Frailea Castanea, it just dissapeared overnight. I think a rat may have eaten it. I wish your Cookie baby well.
Thank you, Andy. This hobby really is about successes and losses all mixed together. I guess it's that challenge that keeps us coming back for more. Your Echinopsis schickendanzii must be gorgeous, how wonderful it will be when it flowers (or has it already?) I know that feeling of losing plants overnight, whether through rot, dry, or critters. Happy growing!
Hi Jenny! Love all your videos and updates. I’m hesitant to start any growing because space is very limited but I’m sure that won’t stop me 😂 Sending prayers and positive healing vibes Cookie’s way. 🙏🏼🐈❤
I'm so glad you enjoy these updates, Tatiana! Space is not a concern until it becomes a concern lol. Just grow without thinking and deal with it later LOLOLOL. Thank you so much for the positive vibes for Cookie!
I found the Astrophytums prefer a light watering only 1 out of every 2 times I do everything else. Litterally only need to water them once when the soil is still a bit damp and they can rot. Also like to be dry in winter and I think those spots are from cold but moist air, probably need more air flow, might be from being closed in.
Thank you for the information, Rohan. Those ornatum babies were not having it at the turn of the season. I think you're right about the spots. As the summer goes on hopefully they grow out of the markings, but next winter it might happen all over again.
I am looking at my first Try at seeds but i had most rot in the bags so i have 3 myriosticma 6 ferocactus herrerae and 4 ferocactus glaucescens inermis survivers that are half a year old but still pinhead size but i have to say i am loveing seed growing all other plants but cactus seeds are so hard to get my hands on and seem to rot easy but i will try more this year i hope.
Good luck with the little Queen hope she have and easy tretment
That's pretty good, Anders! You have 13 seedlings! Do you have adult plants producing seeds? That's another way to source your own seeds. My little queen Cookie is home now. I'm nervous how her body will respond to the treatment given her other concurrent health issues. Let's see how it goes...
@@cookiescacti my plants will not flower at the same time so no homemade seeds yet but that the plan
It will happen!
Your no ID Cactus looks like Echinocereus penalophus to me. Commonly called lady finger. Very generous with it's large purple flowers.
Thank you for the ID! I've seen many of them at nurseries around town.
I find it odd that we like the same kind of cactus. Thanks for the videos
Ha! You know what they say about great minds, Cameron 😉
How’s Tom the totem pole!! Would love a video update!! Love totems
He's still alive, Tyler! Although he's starting to get thirsty more often as the weather warms up and the sun shines stronger. That's a great idea to do an update on the garden, it's a disaster right now full of weeds but there are more plants in the ground since the last video.
@@cookiescacti That would be awesome!! You are the reason why I purchased a couple totem poles myself so thank you!! it’s definitely one of my favorite cactus they’re so unique and weird and beautiful!! I can’t wait for an update video under cactus and Tom!!
@@cookiescacti what does it mean if your totem pole cactus are wrinkly and squishy? And they’re not that vibrant green it’s more of the yellow green. Thanks for responding!💚🌵☀️
I love that you love Totem Pole cactus so much! There's a reason why everyone loves them, me included! If I can get the horrible weeds in my yard under control, I will definitely make an update video. We're about to enter the hottest part of the summer here soon...
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I lost track of UA-cam comments really easily. As long as you don't see rot happening, it could mean it's time for a water. For the yellow-green color, perhaps nutrition? How often do you water? How is your cactus planted? What is it planted in? I'm actually having a similar issue with a Totem Pole root stock that's planted in a pot. I can't tell if it's rotting or if it's thirsty...
Wow how old are your Mammillaria Perbella seedlings 8:10 ? They look great
Thank you so much! I struggled with some of them rotting on me, I hope the remaining decide to stick around a while longer. They were sowed Jan 2, 2022, so 16 months old now.
@@cookiescacti Thanks that's good to know. They are pretty big then considering they are supposed to be slow growers. Hopefully not too slow then :)
Great video! What type of water do you use for your plants and seedlings?
Thank you, Angie! The outdoor seedlings have been getting rainwater that I've collected. The mature plants used to get rain water or acidified tap water, but now I have so many of them that I can't water with a can anymore, so they're starting to get plain tap water this summer. I may still can-water the Arios with rain water, but it'll depend on whether I still have an ounce of patience left lol. The indoor seedlings have been getting acidified tap water with diluted fertilizer.
@@cookiescacti Thank you for the details! It is much appreciated! Your videos give me hope for my small collection.
Yessss! I love this!
where do u buy those square pots? pls share some details of the pots and tray too/.. i want that pot which dont have bent at the edge. like that black pot with two ferro (Video Time: 4:31)
The deep black pot with the two ferros are 2.25" Waterdance pots, the deep kind. I bought them off Amazon but I can't find them any more. I have links to all the supplies that I use in the description for this video: ua-cam.com/video/joCWkDb-cYI/v-deo.html
Happy growing!

@@salimdebabeche3305 No, I cannot send plants internationally. There must be some growers or nurseries in your country or region?
