In Vietnam, we have a very popular brand category, accounting for 70% of all Vietnamese brands. I don't even know what to call it. It's simply stealing pictures online, printed on shirts with very bad materials, then add the english words "edgy and cool", reflective print and boom, you have a brand. The worst thing about the market is that it only needs a product with the word "limited", the price is unbelievably high. I once remembered that there was a shirt that went up to 200$ (original price is about 25$), not because of the material, not because of the design, it simply has the word "limited". Typical examples for the above brands are: BoBui,Dergrey,Dirty coin,Mikenko and many more (just became Nerk Lurk 2.0 and you are rich)

That Anti Social brand was corny to me since it came out. Everybody wearing it stuck to the same basic black tee that was easy to forget. The message got lost when every young person in the street is now 'anti social', especially in this era of glorifying lacks in social comfort like depression and anxiety within the music. Everybody has a problem, and the idea is cringe imo
The "we're sustainable" brand. Don't get me wrong, I love that sustainability is becoming cool, but often if that's the only thing it can be boring. With the exception maybe being if that brand is like truly hardcore in terms of having built a new sustainable technology or is carbon negative yada yada. Even still, without good design I often will kinda not give them the time of day since I can either thrift something or find another sustainable brand.
As of lately I see to many brands trying to capitalize off of niche communities, all though the idea is nice, as a consumer it gets overplayed in my whack opinion lol

His brand, now, might (or might not) stand for something, but his origins definitely were just off the basis of “I’m Kanye, wear my stuff”…and at a time when “trending” became uber trendy he snuck in and created his empire

It’s more than that. Printed tees are fun but the problem with these examples is that they try incredible hard in a market that is absolutely over it. Because anyone can do it, it comes off lazy. People are savvier now. It’s not fooling anyone.

This is part of the reason why I try and focus on making the clothes look a way I haven't seen yet vs plastering graphics on it and calling it a day. I believe that if your going to do a shitty print on a 0.25 cent glidan hoodie and charge $50-150 for it, you should at least add a feature to the hoodie like ears on the hoodie, or headphones as drawstrings even if its not functional. Honestly....

Trying to help people make better stuff so they can succeed in this industry is hardly pretentious. Every single reason has a solution AND insures you don’t have to follow hype. Most brand fail miserably and never make money and part of the reason is they don’t differentiate. Stating a truth is never pretentious unless you take offense to it.
@@THECASUALco you right on some level. For sure trying to help is the intent same as saying be creative on a shirt is intended to help that person. You offer a solution which is what to do better. What you miss is some of these brands are doing that part to if just isn't written on the shirt. IE every shoe purchased we donate one to charity (Tom's) or supporting scholarships for HBC etc etc. They aren't always fashion heavy people like yourself who know what they are doing or how to express it but instead a business sometimes not as creatively controlled by a single visionary but are a collective. In something as saturated as fashion it's sink or swim and majority will sink. I just find it funny that the critique comes off similarly to what your are criticizing. I'm glad you are giving advice to those of us who are looking to start a brand and flourish. I took no offense to what you said. I've seen many brands fall and I've worked with many of them. Maybe they would have benefitted to your advice.
I usually just buy plain/discrete clothing. Nothing that makes me stand out in a public space at all. I'd rather blend in than be a giant billboard covered in logos and flashy imagery. I stick to wearing similar tones. Fading/washed out greys, blacks, dark red, dark green, navy are all my friends. I used to want to prove something with "Supreme" and other similar branding but now I'd rather not look like I'm trying so hard. There is a way to wear clothes made of affordable quality material and not stick out like a sore thumb. You can still look great without looking like you're edgy or begging for attention. With that being said there really isn't anything wrong with sticking out and being different. If you like the way you look that's all that matters. As long as you dress appropriately for the occasion it doesn't matter what the shades, tones, or tints are. Just do your own thing in the end but be smart about it.

Supreme was originally a skate brand but now it’s testing its boundary’s to see how far it’s customers are willing to go to support it so it’s working. They released a brick and they sold out and resold what other brand has the same power and influence to do the same thing.

It’s more than that. Printed tees are fun but the problem with these examples is that they try incredible hard in a market that is absolutely over it. Because anyone can do it, it comes off lazy. People are savvier now. It’s not fooling anyone.

I believe that if your going to do a shitty print on a 0.25 cent glidan hoodie and charge $50-150 for it, you should at least add a feature to the hoodie like ears on the hoodie, or headphones as drawstrings even if its not functional. But personally I'll just let the market do it's thing many of those brands will fizzle out and I couldn't care less if they ride some hype train for a bit. They are just trying to be creative, hustle hard, be edgy, cultural appropriate and make money etc etc 😆

Every single reason has a solution AND insures you don’t have to follow hype. Most brand fail miserably and never make money and part of the reason is they don’t differentiate.

@@THECASUALco you right on some level. For sure trying to help is the intent same as saying be creative on a shirt is intended to help that person. You offer a solution which is what to do better. What you miss is some of these brands are doing that part to if just isn't written on the shirt. IE every shoe purchased we donate one to charity (Tom's) or supporting scholarships for HBC etc etc. They aren't always fashion heavy people like yourself who know what they are doing or how to express it but instead a business sometimes not as creatively controlled by a single visionary but are a collective. In something as saturated as fashion it's sink or swim and majority will sink. I just find it funny that the critique comes off similarly to what your are criticizing. I'm glad you are giving advice to those of us who are looking to start a brand and flourish. I took no offense to what you said. I've seen many brands fall and I've worked with many of them. Maybe they would have benefitted to your advice.

I usually just buy plain/discrete clothing. Nothing that makes me stand out in a public space at all. I'd rather blend in than be a giant billboard covered in logos and flashy imagery. I stick to wearing similar tones. Fading/washed out greys, blacks, dark red, dark green, navy are all my friends. I used to want to prove something with "Supreme" and other similar branding but now I'd rather not look like I'm trying so hard. There is a way to wear clothes made of affordable quality material and not stick out like a sore thumb. You can still look great without looking like you're edgy or begging for attention. With that being said there really isn't anything wrong with sticking out and being different. If you like the way you look that's all that matters. As long as you dress appropriately for the occasion it doesn't matter what the shades, tones, or tints are. Just do your own thing in the end but be smart about it.

Supreme was originally a skate brand but now it’s testing its boundary’s to see how far it’s customers are willing to go to support it so it’s working. They released a brick and they sold out and resold what other brand has the same power and influence to do the same thing.
