- Unedited Micheal Stipe Conversation with Jeanane Garofalo at the Tribeca Film Festival Jume 12, 2024. R.E.M. was recognized for its achievements by being inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame. The band performed for the first time in twenty years.
In a rare interview, the group talked about how they formed, found their sound, and what led to their breakup with CBS Mornings.

Michael is a sweet, sweet guy. I wish I knew him personally. He'd make a great friend.
I met him in Athens in 1990. I was a sophomore in HS and I when to spend 2 weeks with my cousin who was a student at UGA. He was eating pizza at this outdoor thing and I was next to him. I told him about my punk band I was in school. Mostly what I remember about that week was a lot of weed at my cousins house and girls. Lots of girls. I learned a lot about life those 2 weeks.

Yeah, she is insufferable... but quite typical of this epoch... There are certain broads (sometimes kind-of cool, at first), whom i've met at bars and freaky night-garages recently, dames who apparently think they need to affect this "dude-ish" attitude and cuss every second and smoke and chug rum and act like complete louts, seemingly immitating the worst in male behavioursims, in order (one supposes) to somehow express their "modern" mindsets... but it's not attractive, it isn't cool, or funny, or fun, and often seems calculatedly false and desperate, and is ultimately a sad waste of time...

I was a waiter in Nashville in the 90s. One day I served Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant together. They barely spoke a word to me. The only exception was when they ordered. I didn’t inform them that I knew who they were. The entire time they were there they silently surveyed the other patrons in the restaurant as if they were a king and queen perched on their thrones looking down on the lowly peasants below them. I waited on countless famous people and I’m not being hyperbolic when I say they were the most unpleasant people I ever encountered. Seeing this reminded of how arrogant and rude he was that day.

this was embarrasing. stipe couldn't get a word in. i was looking forward to a new interview with stipe, and all she did was talk over him. i used to be a fan of hers, but this was camera-hogging to a new level. silence is golden.
She loves the sound of her own voice, and he doesn’t like the sound of his voice so this simply doesn’t work.

Why the fuck are people here just to bully Janeane Garofolo!? Clearly Michael and her are Friends and they wanted to have an intimate conversation that the person uploading was nice enough to share. It's a CONVERSATION, not an interview! I wish my Life was this good that I could bitch on the internet about how awful or unwatchable something was and seem DEEPLY triggered by it.
