    Guys from the South. Self-deprecating. Not trying to impress anyone through the interview. Not cursing like so many rock stars do. Just being themselves, doing their thing, having fun, making people happy. Thanks, guys, for so much wonderful music. 👊🏼

    It's fascinating to me that all the band members were so enthusiastic about 'Shiny Happy People', a song they refused to play live or add to their best of album. It was originally a country rock idea from Mike Mills, so I wonder whether it changed in style drastically after these interviews. Michael Stipe was quoted as saying, "If I were to send a song into outer space to represent R.E.M until the end of time, I would not want it to be Shiny Happy People." And there's an interesting article in Rolling Stone stating, "Upon hearing the finished version, Mills was reportedly “aghast”."
    However, I've heard the demos that were released and, Kate Pierson's contribution aside, they're not THAT different from the finished version.

      R.E.M. wouldn't be R.E.M. without that song. It almost seems like an affect to me that they reject it now. Most bands couldn't or wouldn't have the talent and confidence to put that on an album.

      I don't think they did ever like it, they just didn't want to trash their album before it even came out. REM has always been good at playing the media game without seeming to play it.

    • @provocase
      @provocase 9 місяців тому

      @@zippymufo9765 But this interview is pre release of the album, none of us ordinary folks knew the song yet. It wouldn't be their first single even. So they didn't have to mention SHP at all during that interview, let alone to not talk trash about the album. They mentioned it because they liked it then, at least...

    LOL, Peter Buck always seems somewhat annoyed or uncomfortable on camera, as he blatantly admitted here. He's a highly intelligent guy who would rather be doing something else more interesting or worthwhile than answering questions on film.

      Crocodile Cafe in Seattle. He has also worked w the Decemberists…. Peter Buck is about as awesome an anti-rock star as they come. He still insists he can’t play the mandolin . Georgia is my bucket list. Thank you for watching

    "Hey Bill wipe your upper lip - you're sweating in this low-quality video." What kind of a dick order is that. This is a great video in spite of the painfully bad interviewer.

      That would be because it is unedited version.He also says ' that's a good take ' etc ' I forgot what to say' .They know they can edit.Most recorded interviews do this.

      The interviewer is Jim McKay, who was a teacher of Stipe's, and who directed a lot of their video stuff, so there's a real familiarity there.

    Stipe’s ego is off the rails. By this point he was a new millionaire surrounded by sycophant yes-man props.

      So why did Mike sing some songs if Stipe's ego was so inflated ? Being proud of your hard work bearing fruit is a noble sin.
