Thanks for another great video. Here you totally answered the question I posted recently in your other video, about which part of the waveform gets compressed. Hi, I have a question. I am planning to make screen recording videos. I choose the OBS studio software for screen recording. So should I record my audio in OBS studio or should separately record my audio in other software like audacity and then sync it later with the screen recording? Which will give me better audio.
You’re probably okay to record in OBS. That way everything is synced up and you don’t have to worry about it. I’ve used it for recording before, I’ve also use my other screen recording software the majority of the time and that works just fine. I don’t notice any difference in the program I use between recording directly into Resolve versus using screen recording program.
Very helpful - thanks again! I wonder: What about the parts that are still, after compression, in the red (above -12 db)? Should I use a limiter in addition to compression or would that just mean I‘m not using the compressor right?

Gracias.
OK, I lowered my audio levels down to the green and yellow and then made adjustments with the eq and compressor. But, you said you would finish by telling us how to make it louder in the end after the editing was done... but you didn't. Please advise.
The last step in the process is the check the overall loudness which would include bringing everything upto the loudness levels you want. Here's a video on it, it's little old, but still works the same way. ua-cam.com/video/SyWFLS4VWvA/v-deo.html
Thanks Jason, great stuff as always. Can I put in a request for a video on the best way to setup and use 3rd party controllers such as the Icon Platform M+ or the Behringer X Touch compact with Fairlight? These are much cheaper options than the BM Desktop Console and there is very little info available on using them in Fairlight.
You're welcome! I can look into those units and see if that's something I can test out and if it would work with Resolve. Thanks for checking out the video!
If I’m making a movie and some scenes sound more dramatic than others is it common to put that dialogue scene on another track and add a compressor just for that scene?
Yes, very common to use many audio tracks for each different type of audio, different scene, etc. I'd use as many tracks as you need. You can literally have thousands if you want to.
If you are in the current version of resolve, you only need to set the in/out points, hit the loop button and you can use the spacebar. You don't need to use Alt / any more. 😜 Maybe try that.
Hi again im so sorry if i am interupting you or anything but when i hower over my clips in the media bin i can hear audio but when i import the clip the clip only gets imported without any audio and i dont really know the issue since im new to the program...
I have seen someone showing a plugin in a music composing software, in which it can show the waveform in the timeline displaying the waveform before and after the compressor applied, rather than only showing while playing back. I wish Davinci Resolve can add that too - wish list for the next version! Another question: When should we use "Vocal Channel" from the effects?
Waves might have a tool like that, I’m not sure. Regarding the vocal channel effect, it really just combines a bunch of other things in a simpler form. You can use that or do them manually for more options.
Jayson, do you have a video on how to adjust audio levels with one clip/section within a single track? I've created a voiceover and have had to go back and redo sections to correct aspects other than sound - like changing the copy or a stutter. This was done the same day, with the same mic, in the same position, however my voice seems really bassie/deep in one of the corrected sections. How do I correct just that one segment? Thank you
Hi! All you need to do is select the clip, and adjust the volume or gain line for the individual clip. This video might help you out: ua-cam.com/video/ENt6dzZ2Bh0/v-deo.html
@@JasonYadlovski J, Thank you. Watched it and took cheat notes for future review. My question was not worded correctly. I'm doing a voiceover track for a project and 90% of the recording was great, (followed your instructions) but there were a few word bobbles and things that needed to be corrected. What I need to learn how to do is use your guide "make your audio sound professional 1&2 for JUST the re-done clip segments. I'm using the same mic (samson G-Track pro) and as best that I can remember in the same position as the first recording. I have cut out the parts that needed correcting and recorded new versions on a separate track. When they are corrected and match the main section I will slide them back into the missing segment of the 90% good track. Currently the redone tracks sound basey or low end and far less crisp than the good track. I'm not exactly sure what I did to correct the GOOD track - probably followed your instructions. Thank you very much. Added to all that I need to get the good and re-done sections to sound the same.
I got you, I would put the new recordings in their own track, so you can modify them on their own using track level features. They don’t have to be in the same track as the original recording.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks. Already tried that. (after I sent the comment yesterday) Unfortunately not knowing how I tuned the first 90%, I'm not getting the the new stuff to match up. The first 90% sounds great and I'm trying to get the redone stuff to sound as good. Is there a way to uncover all the changes that I made to the first track and then apply those changes to the "fixed" segments? Thank you
You can copy everything from one track onto the new track. I’m assuming you adjusted the EQ, the effects, some dynamics maybe. I’m not sure else what you would be changing that you wouldn’t be able to just see if you looked in Fairlight. If you adjust an individual clips, you can select a clip, go to the inspector, go to the effects section and see what effects you applied. Or see any other changes you may have changed only in the inspector. There shouldn’t be anything that’s hidden, you should be able to see all of it.
It’s a shame that using the compression function doesn’t reflect back in the waveform. It seems that the visual feedback would make it easier to change the settings the correct the volume variation. I have used compression in Audacity and it does exactly this. Is there a way to show it in the waveform?
Hi Jason, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have a question; when I play around with volume & compression to set the levels to UA-cam's preferred (-14 LUFS/-1.5 TP), my meters go into the red (between -10 and -6). Do you any thoughts on this? Audio is really new to me, and I don't fully understand what I'm doing!
Picking is whenever the meter hits zero. I like to set a limiter at -1.5 just to make sure nothing is peeking. I’d rather be a little under than a little over. 😜
Great video Jason, gave me the confidence to jump in and have a go using fairlight. Q - when in the process do you make all of these audio edits? do you drop your clips into media pool put em together and then edit audio before editing and cutting the content or the other way around? what are the pro's and con's?
Hi Benjamin! Typically I edit my video then work w/ the audio after my video is edited together. I'll usually set my audio levels while I'm doing my initial edit, just to make sure it is loud enough. If you've got different locations, different voices, etc., I would separate them all into their own tracks so that you can make edits specific to each person, mic, environment, etc. Hope this helps!
@@JasonYadlovski thanks Jason, really helpful. I watched both videos and subbed ;-) managed to edit the audio on my video about How to be a World Class Listener - the compression seems good though it sounds a little low/deep, be interested to see what you think?
It may dip into the red a touch, but as long as the meter isn't getting pinned to the top or reaching the top, it should be fine. You can always add just a little more compression to grab those peaks.
Hi do you think i can get some help? So when i am playing my clip in Davinci resolv there is sound but when i hover over it with the clip line i no longer hear enything please help me!
Sounds like you need to turn audio scrubbing back on. It’s a keyboard shortcut that can easily be hit accidentally. Here’s a video how to do it (I forget the shortcut off the top of my head) ua-cam.com/video/nHPix0I4qxw/v-deo.html

Hi Jason. This is very helpful. I learned a number of subtle improvements that I can apply to my videos. I have a question relating to wind noise reduction for my GoPro. Wind noise is often an issue on my backpacking videos. There are tons of videos that tell you to apply a low pass filter which helps to some extent but are there other techniques perhaps using the equalizer or expander tools to further remove the wind noise? Thanks for any suggestions. A video devoted to this challenge would be awesome!
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! Wind noises are a tough one, most of the time you can’t get rid of all of it. A low Pass filter can help, you could also try using a high pass filter to get rid of some of the rumble. The EQ can help as well, I would pick a point then boost it up and try and find the offending frequencies, then drop it out a little bit. There’s also third-party noise reduction plug-ins that might work good, I’m actually gonna be testing some out soon. Stay tuned because if I find a good one I’m gonna put a video out about it. 😜👍😁
Help. In Fairlight, in mixer, I can't see Dynamics even after I ticked it to show up in the 3 dots. I'm using 18.1.1. Anyone knows? Thanks in advance :)
@@JasonYadlovski Sorry to bother you again, I cannot find voice isolation. I don't see it neither in inspector audio nor fairlight mixer. I can see dialogue leveller though.
Does too much compression make the talent look shorter? I was just starting to understand video and color, and now *audio* comes along and it is just as complicated! Sheesh! But this helps a lot. Thanks!
Hi mate, thank you for these videos, super helpful. I have a question, I am in post production on my film and I have already tackled and have a grasp on EQ notching but one aspect of dynamic compression has me stumped. The dynamics are track-based, my dialogue tracks are separated into each character/cast member, but from line to line or scene to scene the dialogue changes do to proximity to mic, location, and mic used..my question is, is there a way to work on dynamics clip to clip? If not, I’d imagine the only way to work around this is to use multiple tracks grouped into mic/cast/location? I hope this makes sense. I tried following along with you by choosing a few lines from a scene and it worked great, but then the same dynamic settings on another line didn’t work so great. Hoping you can help. Cheers
You're welcome! You don't have an option to work w/ dynamics on a single clip unless you applied an effect to the single clip. I would separate the scenes & actors into separate tracks so you can edit them as necessary. You can then send all of the same actors audio tracks to a bus and then apply some effects or anything else that they would all receive anyway. That way each track doesn't have the same effects, there's just one instance of an effect on the bus for that character. (this is assuming the settings would be the same for all of the actors tracks.) Does that make sense?
@@JasonYadlovski yeah that makes perfect sense, where any given effect is applied to a single characters dialogue that would work for the entire film I can send to a bus and apply it just once instead of for each of their tracks. The film doesn’t have a huge amount of dialogue, so although it’s more work I feel more comfortable at times working clip to clip. I appreciate your response, I’m still learning a lot about sound editing and it’s a huge learning curve. Thanks again!
@@JasonYadlovski oh, also, I’ve been using the EQ a little differently too. Ive been applying the high and low pass filter to the entire track but then I EQ notch clip to clip, therefore I can target specific frequencies for each clip and still having up to 4 bands to work with. There’s no problem working like that is there? Although it obviously is a more tedious approach.
16:35 Do you apply those settings to the music or to the voice? I would expect slower release to mean more compression, so more reduced/farther away sound. If it is applied to the voice, then the voice is more reduced, if it is applied to the music, then the music is more reduced.

Very helpful - thanks again! I wonder: What about the parts that are still, after compression, in the red (above -12 db)? Should I use a limiter in addition to compression or would that just mean I‘m not using the compressor right?
It’s ok if the meter goes into the red a little just as long as it’s not peaking at the top of the meter.
@@JasonYadlovski Got it, thanks! You‘re the best! 😊
I am coming to you because you have more audio fix videos than anyone else! I'm on a Mac and when I download my videos from DaVinci Resolve the sound is REALLY scratchy! Not when playing the timeline...but only after rendering and downloading! Please help me! I didn't see your videos on this problem but felt like you are the Master. Thank you!
Hi! That sounds OK in da Vinci resolve, sounds like it’s an export a problem. Can you tell me what export settings you are using?
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you for your quick reply. I realized later what the trouble was....a dumb mistake on my part. But thanks again for getting back to me so quickly and for the excellent assistance you give in your videos!
thank you!!!

@@JasonYadlovski That would be great!
Pressing alt forward slash only activated it for a second it went on to play without showing the meters any ideas ?
If you are in the current version of resolve, you only need to set the in/out points, hit the loop button and you can use the spacebar. You don't need to use Alt / any more. 😜 Maybe try that.
Very helpfull
Glad it helped!
Hi again im so sorry if i am interupting you or anything but when i hower over my clips in the media bin i can hear audio but when i import the clip the clip only gets imported without any audio and i dont really know the issue since im new to the program...
What tab are you working in? Cut or Edit?
Very informative 👍
Thanks for watching!
I got the Alex audio bulter last year and shut down for a bit. Now I don't see anyone talking about it?? why??
Not sure. I know a bunch of us made videos about it and nothing has really changed with it. I know people still use it.
@@JasonYadlovski Was it worth it? or was it just a fast load and now not as good as just using resolve sound edits?
Hi Jason, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have a question; when I play around with volume & compression to set the levels to UA-cam's preferred (-14 LUFS/-1.5 TP), my meters go into the red (between -10 and -6). Do you any thoughts on this? Audio is really new to me, and I don't fully understand what I'm doing!
Hi! Thanks so much for checking out my videos. It’s OK if the meters are between -10 and -6, just make sure you’re not peaking all.
@@JasonYadlovski thanks for your speedy speedy reply. Just to check, is peaking going above 0, or above -1.5?
Picking is whenever the meter hits zero. I like to set a limiter at -1.5 just to make sure nothing is peeking. I’d rather be a little under than a little over. 😜
That’s for LUFS levels not individual track levels.
@@JasonYadlovski thanks again!
Thanks for the sub! I'd be happy to check it out, drop a link here if you can.
@@JasonYadlovski ua-cam.com/video/8fM1K0_ZRyk/v-deo.html
Why does it look like Audio 2 still goes into the RED even after compression?
It may dip into the red a touch, but as long as the meter isn't getting pinned to the top or reaching the top, it should be fine. You can always add just a little more compression to grab those peaks.
OK, thanks for the reply.

Hi! You might have to scroll up and down in the area above the mixer.
@@JasonYadlovski I see yea, thanks, I was stuck here an hour. Cheers! ty
@@JasonYadlovski Sorry to bother you again, I cannot find voice isolation. I don't see it neither in inspector audio nor fairlight mixer. I can see dialogue leveller though.
No trouble at all, if you’re running the free version, there is no voice isolation in there.

Does too much compression make the talent look shorter?
I was just starting to understand video and color, and now *audio* comes along and it is just as complicated! Sheesh! But this helps a lot. Thanks!
Lol, the talent doesn’t look shorter, it’s just audio. 😜 thanks for watching!
Mix does a little more than being an opacity though since if you put mix to 100% it makes the audio much louder than the original
👍
Thank you very much
You're welcome!
Is Resolve 18 out yet or is it still in Beta? Thanks
Still in Beta - version 6. I imagine the full release will be out soon.
@@JasonYadlovski Awesome thanks. Mine is still on 17, i figured i would keep it that way till 18 comes out
So far version 18 has been very stable for me on Mac. Hopefully the full release will be even better. 😁👍
16:35 Do you apply those settings to the music or to the voice? I would expect slower release to mean more compression, so more reduced/farther away sound. If it is applied to the voice, then the voice is more reduced, if it is applied to the music, then the music is more reduced.
You are applying the settings to the voice track, not the music track.
Shit I didn't know there was a Pt II and found this just when I needed it!
