What if the shaded area is smaller than the non-shaded area but is still around it? I have a question where there is a swimming pool that is a certain size, but then there is a shaded path around it that is 5 feet wide. I need to find the area of the path. What if the non-shaded area is the bigger one? help!
when my maths teacher as explaining this i spent too long drawing a perfect rectangle then she said thats all for today and also this is your homeworK...
Bisma, You are correct; 6*4 is 24. However, is that part of the problem? To find the area of a rectangle we multiply two sides. However, once that is done, we can either add or subtract the areas. The equation for the 2nd example is 7*10 - ( (2*2) + (2*3) ) AREA - (AREA + AREA) If the equation does not look correct, then let's look at the diagram. Suppose we could slide the 2cm by 3cm un-shaded region next to the other un-shaded region so that they are side by side. Does the un-shaded area look to be a total area of 10 cmsqd or 24 cmsqd? I hope this explanation has helped clear up any confusion you have. Thank you for checking my math for any errors. Mr. Medbery

To find the area of a rectangle we multiply two sides.
However, once that is done, we can either add or subtract the areas.
