It's not just kit this should apply too. I decided to support local with my last bike build, I got a fully bespoke carbon gravel, sub 8kg with custom paint job from Northroad cycles, local to me. Not only did I get a completely tailored experience, I got the exact bike I wanted with a custom paint job, the latest top-end kit and for at least a couple of grand cheaper than a big name brand, simply because it hasn't the usual logos associated with it, the irony being that more people have stopped and asked me about this bike than any other high end bike I've bought. The new mantra should be, buy local, support smaller businesses and you could very well make a great saving as well.
That's what Sundays were made for! Lovely countryside, winding country lanes....you were lucky in Essex last Sunday, dan saf we had cats and dogs dropping all day!!
I used to buy all my kit from Morvelo. Great range, great ethics and always had clothing for the larger rider. Now I struggle to find anywhere. Tried Chapeau recently and they were pretty good
Yeo, it’s definitely struggle to find a decent, reliable kit supplier. I’m hoping for good things from Blackmore though. Early indications are very positive. 👌🏻
Hi Peter, yes thanks for the mention. Can fully endorse Nick at Blackmore. Fantastic quality, great designs and the bibs are very comfortable. I encourage all to support Nick and the Ducks. I have not only the club kit but all my other kit is Blackmore, including the long sleeve merino wool you are wearing.
I do miss Nukeproof, they were part of Wiggle/Chain Reaction. I ride a Hardtail from them. I'm sure someone could bring back the name, but the people that made the company are all gone.
Yeh, lots of the small, older name brands they had have sadly gone. Lifeline tools was another one. A few of the tools still exist on the Wiggle website but most are now discontinued. Shame, as they made some really decent, reasonably priced stuff.
I’d have to say for premium UK technical kit SpatzWear is one of the best. They focus on R&D and make small runs, it’s not cheap but when you only have to buy one layer that just works it’s worth the extra. Im yet to overheat in any of their winter stuff, it’s like magic! No affiliation, just a fan!
I’ve seen bits and pieces about Spatz in various online forums but never really looked in to them. I’ve just discovered it was founded by Tom Barry’s though. 👌🏻
Great comments, nice ride well done Mr Treadway. When it comes to clothes I find I have to try on before I buy because I am an odd shape, this means I can not buy clothes on line. Pity your new top looks fantastic. Enjoy your week see you next sunday
Cheers Richard. Glad you enjoyed it. But yes, I guess that must be an issue buying online! I’m not exactly blessed with the body of an Adonis either, but my podgy bits at least seem to proportionately spread out! 😂
Totally agree about the big companies ruining smaller companies, I refuse to buy from them now, just trying to do my bit. If you're heading east then try Poppy's Barn, although slightly north from you, not the cheapest but very nice for cyclists, especially this time of year for a quick warm up stop. Recognised a lot of the roads instantly from my quick go to route.
Absolutely. I’d much prefer to have an actual connection and relationship with a local kit supplier now, than some faceless corporation! Do you Poppy’s Barn in Clavering/Saffron Walden? If so, then that’s another one of our favourites to visit, as it’s along some of our favourite routes up that way. Might see you there at some point. 👌🏻
@petertreadway I'm actually planning a ride there today as I've not been in so long, just waiting on a TV for my training shed, as this weather is not the nicest for riding, although it is ☀️☀️☀️☀️
@@Choccytube Yeh, solo rides in this weather aren't fun, although a sunny sky certainly helps. I don't mind heading out with the lads when it's cold though, as the inane nonsense we chat wiles away the hours (and miles!) 😂 Enjoy you grub at Poppy's
I am also a big fan of Merino wool products but if you are going to do a comprehensive review of such clothing, don't forget to look into the amount of wool that the clothing consists of. If it has a 80% wool content, it will wear out quicker than a product with lets say 60%. The amount of wool in the product is also usually reflected in the price. If it has a very high wool content it will start to fray and look tatty after a couple of years use. From a laymans opinion, 50% is too little, but it should be cheaper of course, whereas 90+ is unnecessary. I just thought i'd mention it so that future consumers of Merino wool don't feel that they've been conned. But i know it is a superior product compared to polyester base layers of old and would never go back to using clothing of that type.
Can you stop being such a legend with these callouts 😂 shame to see yet another cycle brand shunted off to Mike Gashley. Looks like a cracking lunch spot! Great video as always 🤟🤟🤟
@@davidpayne8413 that has been mentioned once or twice, David and funnily enough, my nickname was Treaders at school (and still is to some people). 😂 Perhaps I should try and capitalise on that! 👌🏻
Stop buying from large retail websites and buy from a local bike shops. Wiggle was one of the worst - they bought up all the stock cheaply leaving independents unable to get stock - sold stuff below trade price that local bike shops buy stuff for. That’s why they went under - they got too greedy and got caught out holding more stock than they could sell.
Ooooooh, could you extend it to coffee trucks too? I might even try and sweeten the pot with Chi9nese carbon to ogle at, and a discount on a latte (and The Worlds Best Hot Chocolate...)
Coffee trucks are well and truly welcome, mate. 😉 Next time we head up north, I’m seeking you out. I can’t resist a decent hot chocolate, especially in this weather. 👌🏻
@@petertreadway *down south ;) Remember me if you come down for the Isle of Wight randonee in April, you'll literally go past my door heading for the ferry :)
I am no fan of Ashley, though he is clearly a proficient businessman. The small companies you refer to being bought and sold was because, they were run badly and were going out of business. Some criticism needs to go their way.
I’m sure there’s an element of that but a number of companies have fallen victim to the original owners being unable to resist a multi-million pound buyout to see their very buoyant company, only to find it get squeezed dry for max profit later and ultimately bought in a scavenger sale. I have nothing against any person or company making profit, as that’s the way of the world, but I’d rather support cycling companies that are ‘by cyclists, for cyclists’. 👌🏻
The stuff linked in my description is all camera gear I use to film my videos, which was pretty much all bought locally from a camera shop I have a great relationship with, as I am a professional photographer for my main job. The problem is that the vast majority of my audience don’t live locally to me, so it’s not much use giving them details of my local small camera store. Amazon is the easiest way to showcase the kit I use therefore and then it’s up to anyone watching if they want to buy it from there or take the information to their own local store. Regards the bike builds and the parts I buy from AliExpress, this is chiefly due to the fact that my channel is built around reducing the financial barrier to entry to cycling for most people, so there is a trade off to be had, I grant you but my main goal is to get more people on bikes and if showing them that there’s a cheaper way to get a bike os what spurs that, then that’s the best thing. In any case, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and share your comments.
Fair point but can we agree that when they’re bought, they’re generally run in a way to maximise profit, usually at the detriment to existing customer base.
