I've just done this job and this video has proved invaluable, I would never have thought of winding back the solenoids with a 12 volt battery, incidentally you can use a battery charger set to 12 volts if you haven't got a battery to hand and yes you do have to do this otherwise you can't push the pistons back in. Many thanks.
Hi guys, did this on my Audi A4 2013 1.8T. Works like a charm. Tips. - Right is loose, left is tight. - Make sure to reconnect the connector after winding the motor and piston back.
Major tips for anybody wanting to quickly do this job with little tools, step 1 take of tire, step 2 use 13mm and Channel locks to hold one nut and wrench the outer bolt to take off the two main caliper bolts, step 3 take a star allen and take off the two bolts on the sides of the black parking brake unit once bolts are off carefully remove the black parking brake unit from the calipers and set aside take a t-40 and insert and turn the middle teeth hole by hand and turn clock wise till it stops turning, (it may take awhile but keep going till a definite stop) step four once it stoped turning put the black parking brake unit back on and bolt back onto caliper, step 5 slowly use a c clamp and draw in caliper piston back, step 6 remove old pads and insert new pads, step 7 place caliper over pads and put on the first two bolts on with same way usings channel locks to hold inner nut and tightening outer bolt with a 13mm, step 8 bolt on wheel, step 9 “pump brakes!” Don’t forget to pump the brakes with new pads, step 10 to (reset parking brake) turn car off hold down accelerator (gas pedal) and down on the parking break for 10 seconds then turn car on while still holding gas and parking break hold for 10 more seconds shut of car hold them down for 5 seconds then turn on car and hold for 5 more seconds then release both “its a long process but it will reset all lights that you created when manually turning the break gears and after that enjoy your new brake pads and you can thank the europeans for how hard it is to just change your brakes haha
Thank you so much for this video, im no mechanic by any means but my father is (retired now) so i grew up around cars and know enough to do the basics, im servicing a friends audi tomorrow and doing the discs amd pads, i told her i cant do the rear because i dont have the computer needed to free the calipers. Know because of your video i am able to. Thanks lad Brilliant
Of note: the carrier bracket bolts are stretch bolts, meaning one-time use only. They are specified as 100NM+90 degrees. They have a tendency to not hold if reused. The bolts are only a couple pounds each.
Very useful video, thank you! Just a few things I found made my life easier doing this job. An alternative way to remove any of these pesky Audi/VW electrical connectors, that requires no tools, is to push in on the connector, then push down on the retainer, pull back and it comes right off. This is shown in this video ua-cam.com/video/MVVGtGzp9WI/v-deo.html. Instead of the battery to retract the parking brake, you can remove the two screws (T30) holding the brake motor on, rock it a bit, and it comes right off. Then, using a T40 turn the part that is left attached to the caliper clockwise until it stops. Then use your preferred method to push the piston back in (check fluid reservoir before doing this or you may overflow it). When all is back together (pads in, caliper on), you can take up the slack in the parking brake by turning the parking brake screw counter clockwise until it is just snug, then reinstall the brake motor, making sure that the motor shaft lines up.
Great video. I have changed lots of brakes and rotors but never any with the electronic parking brake. Loved the idea of the battery to retract the piston. Since the car battery is in the back I connected the wire to it and held it with clamps. Worked great. I pushed the piston too far out on one side but will deal with that tomorrow.
I had such trouble with the rear brakes on my audi a5. Thank you for this detailed video. That battery trick is a life saver! You are the GOAT!= Greatest Of All Time! 💯 💯 👍🏾
done this using car battery , thanks for the tip bro , but now tell me please how the hell i can lose bolts on rear caliper holder .. just broke 2 21nuts on the front ,but somehow done that , but now in the back stupid 18 and can't get there with brakebar .. freaking me out this whole shit ...
Coated rotors should still be cleaned of any grease, it just means the coating does not need to be sanded off prior to use Torque your bolts properly as you may be able to gauge but lots of ppl watching here won't be able to and will strip or not tighten enough
I think my caliper piston has popped out..it's not retracting all the way now..any chance to give some advice how to pop it. ack in..mines electric too
No the parking brake on this car is electronic and not mechanical like most older cars The proper way to do this is with vagcom or obd11 or xtool vag401
I tried just releasing it using the normal way and yes you can remove the pads and the carrier but it is physically impossible to then crank the piston back in at the end of the job. You need to use this trick to release the piston fully.
I'm guessing it's so you can trick the computer. So you don't get a brake fault code. Having the parking brake on and then unplugging the connector, and retracting the motor with the battery, tricks the computer. It doesn't see the actuation of the motor. So the computer sees it as on the whole time.
It doesn’t retract enough, if you watch it’s 5-10 seconds of retraction on here, when you remove the handbrake it’s only 1-2 seconds so you can see it’s only moving enough to back off the pads
Ok, done this with the 12v battery method. All seemed good until I got back in the car and the handbrake won’t release and there’s a handbrake malfunction warning. Help!
@@RacyGex cause it's anti seize grease. The only thing anyone didn't said, that he didn't grease the sliding pins with special grease and front of brake pads with copper grease, didn't use a torque wrench. That's a proper job.
@@terry9589 Did not know that, they all say you got to use a Vag computer or the Battery trick, you retract the e brake manually with the torx ? I want to do them tomorrow but I freaking out battery trick or not sure what to do.
as a fellow irish man you'll appreciate when i say ...thats fucking genius lol, obd? vcds? fuck that, gimmie some AA batteries and hold my beer! :) great video
I just tried it and it worked. I unplugged the wire from the housing. I had a 12v car batter and added 2 wires to it. on the caliper is the male end of the plug. Inside you see 2 flat pins. Carefully touch 1 wire to 1 and 2nd the other, watch to see if the piston moves out or in. If nothing, then good. let run about 10 sec until stops. If reversed , you will see the piston move out. Once I figured this all out, only changing pads on rear the 2nd one took 10 minutes from tire off to tire back on.
This guy's video tutorials are superb. To the point & no silly music. Top man.

You can just unbolt the motor and wind it back with a torn bit
Best Audi rear pad video I have seen, no daft price diagnostics, no REALLY annoying background music. Well done that man.

I'm guessing it's so you can trick the computer. So you don't get a brake fault code. Does the car automatically apply the brake?
if the rotor at the back is a single disc do i need a single dics aswell or can i go with a dual disc aswell?
Would fully copper wire be okay?
Can someone tell me where to buy the right gauge electrical wire and battery to support it
Great video, can you do a video on front brake replacement with this vehicle?
Can i use batary 12v 68Ah ?

Needs to be turned off/not engaged
12v ?
On inspection my handbrake was faulty, just recently changed brakes. Can i use the battery technique to make the e-brake grip better?
Doubt that will make any difference to performance.
It's all based on the strength of the motor winding the brakes.
I tried the battery option and for some reason the caliper is all he way out and it will not retract. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have a parking brake issue after doing this😕. Help?
Please only apply the grease on the center of the disc on the edge not all over the hub. because the grease traps the heat and heat damage the disc
Stop giving advice.

why did you not push leaver the piston back after you wound the motor back 2min mark
is this brake assembly code 1KW?
Don’t you need to put grease too on the pads?
Do you need to bleed these brakes too? Or are they okay since they’re ran on a motor
No need to bleed unless you remove a house or bleed nipple.
