The backstory: the springboks where banned from international rugby due to the apartheid regime. In 1995 when they returned to the world stage they won the Rugby world cup. Nelson Mandela was their biggest supporter and saw it as an opportunity to unite the country ...and it did. Ever since the brand of Springbok rugby has been to inspire, impact and influence. You only have to look at the passion in the team when they sing the national anthem to see this. Thanks for your reaction...hope to see more rugby reactions 👏
The springbok is an antelope type animal from South Africa, hence the name of the South African national team. The number on the back of the shirt represents the position played and is not “the property” of the individual. Although South Africa are the current world champions many would consider New Zealand, the All Blacks, to be the finest team in the game. The World Cup begins in a few weeks time, why not watch it? Before then watch a video on the laws (not rules) of the game!
This aged like milk chommie 😂 the Springboks have the most World Cup, beat New Zealand twice in the final and thrashed them just before. But not taking away from the mighty all blacks, they are always the favourites 🌻
American Football was derived from Rugby football, but the latter only became a professional sport in the early 90’s. Before then it was played by amateurs, not paid athletes, with the first World Cup only played in 1987 and every 4 years since. Most teams (schools / universities / clubs / franchises / international) represent a city, region or country in their respective league / competition and the sport is played throughout the majority of the world. The team in this video is the national team of South Africa who are the 2019 Rugby World Cup champions. They are called the Springboks. It’s a word from the Afrikaans language (1 of 11 official languages in South Africa) that means “jumping buck” (you can see the emblem on their jerseys). They are 2 very different sports, but also very similar and you can get the rules from other videos, but it might be helpful to draw some comparisons to the NFL to get a better understanding of especially the positions and roles of certain players. A Rugby team has 23 players (not 46) in their match-day squad but can only have 15 players (8 forwards and 7 backs) on the field at a time, meaning the majority play the entire 80 minute game (2 halves of 40mins), with the remaining 8 players on the bench used for tactical or injury replacements. So there are no specialist teams that are interchangeable, only specialist positions, and all players must be able to run, pass and tackle (with kicking left to the backs). It’s important to remember in Rugby you can’t tackle a player without the ball, so there are no intentional blocking allowed like in the NFL. There are also no downs like in NFL where the play is stopped and restarted with a scrimmage, but rather “rucks” that are kind of like a mini-scrimmage (mostly done by the forwards) where they try and push each other over the ball. Those are the pileups you see that happens when the ball carrier is tackled to the ground, but the play is not stopped unless an infringement occurs and a scrum, penalty kick or free kick is awarded by the referee. The forwards (no 1 to 8) are the biggest and heaviest players (especially the lower the number) and are like the tight ends or defensive line-men like you get in the NFL. Their roles and positions can get a bit technical, so rather look at a guide or video. The no 9 of the team, called the scrumhalf (and usually the smallest player on the field), is like the NFL player who snaps / hikes the ball to the quarterback, however as the play is not stopped he has to run from ruck to ruck to achieve this whilst the ball is in play. The majority of the time the no 9 will pass the ball back to the no 10, called the flyhalf, who is like the quarterback of the team - he’s the general pivot and play maker of the team and is also mostly assigned the kicking duties - whether kicking conversions and penalty kicks (field goals) or “punting” for territory, etc. No 12 and 13 are called centres and are like NFL running backs; strong and fast ball carriers that are used for drawing in defenders to create space outside or achieving gain-line meters (yardage) through the middle. No 11 and 14 are the left and right wings - they’re like wide receivers, typically the fastest and best running backs and usually the guys who score the most tries (touchdowns). No 15 is called the fullback who plays very similar to the 10, but he stays back to cover kicks from the opposing team or to kick for territory himself. He also performs a sweeper / safety defensive role at the back if there’s a line-break. He also joins the back-line in offensive moves as an extra man or to switch with the no 10 as the play maker. Cheslin Kolbe is probably the best wing in the world at the moment - ua-cam.com/video/hNl7NS9aO9w/v-deo.html The best wing of all time was the great late Jonah Lomu - ua-cam.com/video/hWHlCDKebMY/v-deo.html
No forward passes.. just looks like it from the camera. There are linesman that run alongside the field with the teams to check that...and if there is any doubt they refer to cameras
When they pile up its called rucking and sealing. it is essentially to protect the ball from getting stolen by the other team. you need at least 4 players to play in the ruck. first guy "sweeps", second guy "rucks", third guy " covers" fourth guy plays the ball out of the ruck
The passes that you thought were forward werent. These dudes just pass it so perfectly flat it looks forward. Plus the camera angle kinda makes it look like that too. But yeah, rule is, only pass back but you can kick forward.
Positions.. Look at the number. Each position has an assigned number. Players don't have their 'own number'. The number on your back can vary match to match. The Forwards (aka Scrum, big guys) have the low numbers and the Backs have the high ones. I'f on defense say, the guys playing Wing would be like the Cornerbacks (11+14) with the Fullback (15) being the Safety. They play like in a corner rotating zone defense. Numbers 9 (Scrum Half) and 10 (Fly Half) are distributers and decision makers. That leaves the Inside (12) and Outside (13) Centers. They are the 'hole makers' and the wall. All of the above has to interact with the Forwards but That's a whole other lesson. Oh, Basketball, it's in there too. Read up on the 'invention' of basketball. From what I heard some rugby player living in the American midwest was looking for a fun way to stay in shape during those long winters and so he came up with basketball.
As for positions, there are 15 players a side on the field. There's two main groups, forwards and backs, think brains and bronze. Forwards are the BIG boys (the heaviest guys on the team) and cover position 1- 8. There are specific roles within that, but they are generally the front line in the center of the field and they do the majority of the heavy lifting, like tackling, scrums, lineouts etc... The backs, 9-15, are usually much smaller guys. These dudes generally make up the play makers, kickers and wings. These guys have to cover the back field and the flanks. They have to run A LOT and are the fastest and most agile on the field. So you can generally tell position based on body type.
Why are they this good? 4 Times World Champions that's why. As a South African I have to say we take great pride in our rugby and only the best of the best are chosen to represent our country in the world cup.
You asked for background on to why they so good? Watch the film "Invictus" it's a true story about how rugby united a nation, and the passion that comes with it is what drives
You should check out the 2019 World Cup final. World Rugby put it on their UA-cam Channel so you could watch it there to see the pinnacle of Rugby, as well as the pinnacle of the Springboks since they won the 2019 world cup
Just remeber that sportsmanship is the most important thing. In any sport event there cant be bad losers. The best team cant loose. SA made history but our greatesd and best foe, and best and most respected by us
Hey Jit. Here are the names of each position: 1. Loosehead Prop 2. Hooker 3. Tighthead Prop 4. Lock 5. Lock 6. Blindside Flanker 7. Openside Flanker 8. 8th Man 9. Scrumhalf 10. Flyhalf 11. Left Winger 12. Inside Centre 13. Outside Centre 14. Right Winger 15. Fullback
Two halves each of forty minutes. No time outs or stops apart from infringements or injuries. It is a real contact sport, in as much as you are competing to stop them or take the ball from the opposition and start your own attack. Basically all players must be able to do all things, attack and defend, irrespective of their position. Fifteen players per team plus eight who are substitutes, but, players removed from the field do not return, so some play the 80 minutes and some less. In theory the game could be played without stopping for the 40 minutes, but of course that would never be! It’s a game where you often sacrifice yourself by being tackled but pass the ball just before so. That means the opposing team have committed a player which lets you exploit that and move the ball to outmanoeuvre them. Yes passes cannot be forward! Your reactions are really great, incisive and observational from a proper sports lover.
bit late but no matter. Rugby is a very fast flowing sport, where the only stoppages are for fouls or the ball going out of play. Some fouls are considered offensives and will get a card (yellow, man gets sent off the field for 10 minutes. Red, your team is man down rest of the game). Each number relates to a different position played, and each position has its strengths and weaknesses, You are right, the #11 & #14 tend to be your fastest players but these days you want a combination of speed and strength rather than outright speed. i recommend looking up beginner videos on rugby, especially those that briefly explain positions & laws, as they are important and its easier to digest a video with examples rather than text.
@ LilJitBigDreamz You pronounce the "o" in Springbok like the "o" in pop. 😊😊 Rugby is a contact sport and only real men play this game. Thanks for reacting on this beautiful sport.
World cup comming up soon and tomorrow South Africa vs All Blacks little warm up before the world cup 🎉 the game lasts 80min, 40min per side plus (injury time)
Because of the scrum caps it is hard to say but curtly arendse and cheslyn kolbe both play (left wing 11) or (right wing nr 14)they are champions in their own right
Love the fact that Americans want get to know Rugby. Nfl are in their dna like rugby are in ours. Difference is we are hardcore no pads and protective stuff. Body hit hard. I know there was a stage where SA all best Fly half 10, Naas Botha's son was playing in the nfl. Rugby are for real men that can take the hits. Just a pity world rugby is changing it into a pissy sport and not full on contacted game it use to be. Yellow cards now send to a bunker because refs to scared to man up. If it is a red cars give it to leave it to someone who is not on the field involved with the game.
But South Africa’s never lost to Fiji, Samoa or Tonga… The last games the Springboks have played against Fiji, Samoa and Tonga were: 49-3, 46-6 and 30-25 respectively.
SA is playing Tonga in the 2023 World Cup, the closest one of them (Fiji) ever came to beating SA was in the 2007 World Cup quarter final, and they still lost badly.
The backstory: the springboks where banned from international rugby due to the apartheid regime. In 1995 when they returned to the world stage they won the Rugby world cup. There's a documentary on their journey to winning the 2019 world cup called Chasing the sun, definitely a mist watch
Watch South African high school rugby it will answer your question why the Springboks are so good
There are two different 14s in this video. Kolbe and Arendse. Kolbe is the current #1, Arendse is the up and coming guy.
