Originally telecast live on Tuesday, May 27, 1958 at 3:30pm(et) {14:19- Denise Darcel and Cliff Norton were guest celebrity players on "MIKE STOKEY'S PANTOMIME QUIZ" that evening, at 9:30}. Immediately following Johnny....another hour of Dick Clark's "AMERICAN BANDSTAND", at 4pm.
My grandparents were on 3 episodes of this show in 1958-1959 (Johnny Carson was host). My gradnma is currently 95 years old and has asked me to try to find the episodes she was on. Does anyone have ideas where I could access more of these? Not finding much info anywhere online. Thank you. It would mean the world to her to make this happen.
This German fencing expert really is creepy when you learn how much the early Nazi party members had brutal fencing sparring matches. One of them ended up as NASAs first Kennedy Flight Director. Kurt Debus. He got a large facial wound during one of those fencing battles.
The stupidest idea ever. The main reason I WILL NOT go to an NHL or MLB game. That horror house bullshit DOES NOT BELONG outside a "venue." In the 1920s, when: movies were silent, and my former Shitcago Stadium (and 6 others) were planned...some cultured fool (on drugs, obviously) thought, "hey, let's terrify fans with _____." Only from the minds of intellectuals. I like the game, not the cacophony of sound effects, yelling, and screaming. I cannot believe I had a love for that shit at one time. Correct me if I'm wrong: but two workers found an electric _____, plugged it in, and that's how baseball got its unwanted, operatic soundtrack. The archaic fine arts (and intellectuals) need to leave sports fans TF alone. That's all ____ music is (opera, without the singer; the "guts" or mechanics do the singing).
Bill Nimmo the announcer , he left to do hosting another show . McMahon was his replacement. Nimmo many years later wrote a letter to Carson that JC responded to on The Tonight Show .There was an interesting connection between McMahon-Clark-Carson .
@@JJJBRICE Carson never mentioned (in my memory) that there was an earlier announcer before Ed. Now, with all the tools we have available, we can find all this stuff out. It's easy to see how Carson was in the running for Tonight. He had the right talent stack. These daily shows, game shows or talk shows, were clearly a grind, and after doing one for several weeks, the general vapidity of all of them has to become frustrating for the hosts. They'll all tell you they love it, but I'm not sure I believe them. To boot, the audiences for most of these shows are in relative terms way smaller than they used to be, almost a niche audience. That's got to burn as well. I also noticed at the end of this video that Carson seemed to be 'appearing' on the Jack Paar program, likely as guest host or similar. So there were actual auditions for the Tonight job.
@@dmiller1000 It may be a grind but given the huge compensation and the fact that they shoot like 5 shows a day gives them a lot of time off. My understanding is that Johnny initially did not want to do The Tonight Show as he knew that it was going to be a pretty much all life encompassing thing. If my memory serves me correctly he turned it down the 1st time, as he actually thought had a pretty good gig on this game show.
Somehow I got sucked in and enjoyed this,tv has come a long way. Gone are the days of decency, respectfulness, and no vulgarity
DUANE, MY GOODNESS, HOW THE HECK ARE YOU?
Johnny Carson was amazing guy !!!
He was versatile comedian.
Carson has always been funny but that first contestant was the best, that's the kind of people we need today.
Thank you for posting this amazing and entertaining bit of TV history.

Ethel Merman .... is it too late to claim my prize ?
I never realized how much Benedict Cumberbatch resembles Johnny Carson as a young man
Both have the cucumber style! 😂🤣🤣
Excellent! Ty for posting.
Ahh, the old days when they didn't put the caller on the air. Radio did the same thing.
That pitchman was fantastic. Ed was a pitchman too
Nowadays no one trusts his wife😂🤣🤣🤣
I want to go to his hometown.
haircut jokes still relevant 60 years later
Ah the fabulous fifties.
This program moved from CBS to ABC and was renamed WHO DO YOU TRUST?

13:01 Any idea as to what the answer is?
Ethel Merman
I need the rules
Organ Music. I wonder why they used it. I know they used it during baseball games back then. NHL still (shudders) use it.

Without the caller’s audio, it’s kinda pointless.
A young Carson is interesting.
Jamica Long Island ??

Where was Ed McMahon? Sick day, maybe?
Actually Ed was the regular announcer on this show.
Ed wasn't there until 1958

OJ could never go on that show.
