We travel by AmTrak, but without adequate support by the government, or by private industry, its quality of service continues to decline. You make one brief reference in this episode that touches on that, after Birmingham. You did not have to wait for the freight train to clear the tracks. Last spring, when returning from New York, Penn Station, to South Bend, Indiana, after our return from Europe, we were held up repeatedly by freight trains that were given priority. It was so bad that the people on board who needed to get to Chicago to make connections for continuing west to California or Seattle were in great danger of missing their connections! Passenger trains have been devalued in this nation, and it is a sad situation. FWIW, since your show is for lovers of trains, on our tip last spring we did get to take the train ferry from Copenhagen/Denmark into northern Germany. I believe it will end service within the next few years, as last such major train ferry in the world, as they finish the new bridge / tunnel complex that will provide service. I should research your episodes, if you have not done an episode on that train ferry, now would be a good time to record a trip that uses it!
Passanger system in Gemany are best in the world. In the USA, a lot of goods are transported by freight trains, they are very large, this must be taken into account. But in the United States, the romance of the railway journey has been preserved. I really want to go there in the USA until all the trains are replaced with boring and soulless trains like the Avelia Liberty.
So sehr ich die Eisenbahn auch mag, in den USA würde ich dennoch einen Road Trip mit einem alten Muscle Car bevorzugen :) Auch, wenn ich sagen muss, dass in den USA tolle Loks fahren/fuhren. Die meisten Dampfloks finde ich sehr schick, teilweise schöner als die deutschen Loks (25:53 z. B.). Wenn in den USA nicht einiges schlief laufen würde würde ich wohl schon längst dort leben :)
Union Pacific hat natürlich keine 400.000 Mitarbeiter sondern nur circa 10% davon, kann ja mal passieren, diesmal leider zu wenig über den Zug und die Technik, wäre als 2 Teiler sicher besser gewesen.

Namely, history and the people and places the rails pass through. The segment in Birmingham in Alabama showed scenes from the Civil Rights Museum Institute in Birmingham. This museum is a must see for anyone interested in the history of the United States and the struggle for racial equality. It is across the street from Kelly Ingram Park, where Bull Conner's police unleashed dogs on young Black people, and on another corner is the church bombed by white conservatives, which killed four innocent young girls. This episode did an outstanding job of focusing on what is the most important element in this city's history. Birmingham still struggles economically from white flight to the suburbs, and from the collapse of the steel and iron industries. But the south side of the downtown area hosts what has grown to be an important university and one of the most important medical centers in the southern United States. The city is well worth a visit for its history. I say this as Birmingham was my home town, where I was born and grew up, although I left the state of Alabama after 1969 after finishing college.

Nein, Amtrak ist die (staatliche) Bahngesellschaft die in den 70ern quasi alle Personenfernzüge übernommen hat.
Crescent City ist so hässlich! Dafür sind die Redwoods sehr schön! :)
