I admire your professional attitude towards DCS. Many treat it like a game rather than a sim. Big difference. Always ask yourself if what you're doing what a real pilot would do. I have a friend who likes to come over and watch me fly. He looks at me like I am goofy for stopping before I enter a runway and look both ways before entering. I tell him why I do it, but he responds that there's not going to be an airplane landing if you didn't program it, so why bother? Well, that's what a real pilot would do, and it's good to develop those kind of habits. DCS has gone to a lot of effort to make everything so real and lifelike, you have to do your part. And I try (not always, but mostly) to do a proper cold start, taxi, take off, mission, land, taxi and shutdown when I can. Even if it's just a target practice run to test a new weapon, get into that habit. When you do decide to venture into a public server, many times you cannot respawn in a mission. If you're Winchester, you must land, taxi, rearm, etc. and rejoin the mission. If you can't do that very efficiently or at all, your public server experience is going to be a bad one. And finally, taxi speed. Many have speed restrictions on how fast you can taxi and minimum spreads. Violating them will get you a warning and then booted. Not all are that strict, but some are.

You can press the sensor select down twice to switch between HSI and SA page on the bottom display. This way you don't have to fiddle with the mouse.
I brought the F18 almost two years ago and never used it... maybe with this... I can finally see what the hype is all about... ;) Thanks for taking the time to do these.
Not bad, but for a professional pilot there are few things that could assist like understanding Stab settings for certain takeoff weight. ATC ( automatic throttle control ) set to 350 would of helped from busting your airspeed as well as using Auto Pilot set to Baro maintaining 5000ft. Just a few tools to be a proficient pilot and taking the workload away from hand flying :)
Didn't know that with the taxiway lettering yet. Thx Cause, you're carring weapons, a last-chance procedure would be nice for the pilots, who don't know what a last-chance is.

How about a revisited Harrier syllabus? I just bought it and I seem to stumble upon a few discrepancies between what I see in the jet vs. the tutorials I find and even the instructor in some of the training missions. Maybe it's just me being dumb and failing to follow procedures, but I think it might prove helpful for people... Great job on the Hornet Spud, aaas always!
Hello! I just got my copy of DCS and thr F/A 18 two days ago. So glad that you are making this guide. I have learnt alot from you. However, I am very lost with regards to the different radar and navigation system on the DDI. Is there an existing guide on this that i could use, please?
I'm looking forward to this series. I recently came back to DCS and bought the F18 thanks to the recent sale after giving up on the M2000c lol. I'm still trying to learn the basics and such so these are great for me since they are really thorough compared to other outdated tutorials. Thanks!
here is some feedback. You did not mention DME, what it is and where it is indicated not in this video or the previous, i had to google it. In the end you bring up the "EW" page without explaining how to do it or what it is. You also in the end switch your HSI to your SA-page MPCD... there are a lot of abbreviations that you fail to explain in this video or the last. Assuming we should know these by heart. Also in the last video you turned on the tacan and a lot of other instrument in the middle console without explaining what it was you turned on. Just that you turned on a lot of abbreviations.

Sometimes is hard to get into updated information as the sources were made as the features were up. Your idea in making a more "professional" approach is the real fun. Formation take off and landing are very welcome too. And if you can go deeper on tacan features and uses and navigation it will be appreciated (like exploring entry/exit points on charts and procedures). And for this video just a question... how did you manage to turn on the radio to ask for startup clearence on atc? and the info on radial to setup? Thank you man. Outside of the rotate speed and the NWS being off, this is really good info. There is no need to turn off the NWS on takeoff roll. The flight control computers dictate its use or rudder use so you’ll be fine. Good comment on the paddle switch vs NWS switch. But you shouldn’t be turning it off anyway so this shouldn’t be an issue. Also your rotation and takeoff speed are dictated by weight, same as approach speed. If you have a heavy load and you try to rotate at 120 you’ll actually extend you takeoff roll. But not a bad video.
That may be true in the real aircraft, but in DCS there is no differentiation between the FCS utilizing the Rudders and NWS and players will consistently over control the aircraft at high speeds in the take off roll. Also not many DCS players are going to be able to calculate the Vr speed on the fly in the game.
Nice job pointing this out lance. Natops manual section 7.2.2 has no instruction on disengaging the nosewheel steering at 70 knots ias during rollout. This is not common practice for real Hornet drivers. Normal take off rollout for a Hornet is mostly NWS with a little upwind aileron during higher speeds with stronger crosswinds.
"As Fragged" Means follow your mission plan as you were briefed and be where you are expected to be in the overall mission plan, basically. DME= Distance measuring equipment, it is the distance displayed away from a TACAN system in the F/A-18 or the distance from a VOR Station in a civilian aircraft. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distance_measuring_equipment_(aviation)
Very nice video, as always! You have it! May I ask a question please: When you initially start any airplane, I noticed that you have set the Altimeter setting of QNH, right? Do you take off with the QNH setting or the QFE that the Tower is giving to you? Or do you use the QFE for the landing pattern? Thank you, Spud!
This is great quality indeed, but sometimes you're using acronyms without telling what they mean (probably because they're very common, but for noobs like myself it's a bit confusing 😅) Also you didn't say why you are flying this radial after takeoff, nor why this altitude. I imagine this is the standard thing, but could you then tell us where to find these infos for every airfield ?
One thing I am finding is when I take off from a carrier, my nose is pointed so high it will not lower. The elevators are stuck in TO mode trim. How do I correct for that? I am sure I am not doing something right, but what? I press the TO trim button and it doesn't work. The elevators are stuck in the TO off position.
When i take off and raise the landing gear the gear doors wont close and i get a gear alarm . I am using a axis on my hotas for the gear up and gear which sems to be working correctly. What am I doing wrong
You didn't get the ATIS. Cancel takeoff clearance, take the next taxiway off the runway and taxi back to parking. Possible Pilot Deviation! Advise ready to copy tower number. 🤨🤨
Hi Spudknocker. Picked up a few good tips from your tutorial; many thanks for sharing. In particular I was interested in the NWS disengage as you hit 70knots. How is this then engaged when landed and looking to taxi or will it automatically re-engage? I see the keyboard command is ‘A’ to disengage but don’t see an option to re- engage and it doesn’t appear to toggle with the ‘A’ key. I also see ‘NWS’ in your HUD but not on mine. Again, thanks for this and the other tutorials and videos you have posted. For a newbie to flightsims they are a lifesaver and help sustain interest.

Using TACAN at home base for SA on runway heading is genius. GS speed too

QNH always all the time you really never use QFE except if you’re flying in an air show

Australian Hornets had ILS I believe - I would love to see this implemented in our DCS model..

Plane lifts off by itself for me without backward pressure on the stick. Can’t figure out why. I made sure all is correctly set, even the stab trim.
If you have it trimmed out that is perfectly normal

What do you use to move the camera? Some sort of headset, if so, which one?
So this is a FA18C block 20. How many "Blocks" were the 10 year C series production run?

Re: keeping it slow: If the airfield doesn't have a sign that says: "No Drifting," then that's really their own fault.
