  • The Razorback Ridge trail to Mount Feathertop summit is one of the most scenic hikes in the whole of Victoria. The trailhead is on the Great Alpine Road just out of Mount Hotham at Diamantina Hut. There is a small car park on the side of the road.
    The trail is 11km one way, or 22km return which was expected to take 8 hours. We arrived early to give ourselves all day to complete it.
    The hike takes you along the top of the mountains which means you constantly have stunning views of the whole region including Mount Buffalo, Mount Bogong, Mount Hotham and much more.
    We saw our first ever snake while hiking! It was only small but slithered across the trail right in front of me and I nearly stepped on it! We should probably invest in some gaiters for summer hiking!
    Eventually the trail comes to a turnoff to Federation Hut so of course we went for a look and it was really nice. There was a large clearing where the hut and toilets are situated and would be a beautiful spot for camping. The hut looked relatively new and was quite large compared to other alpine huts we've seen. There was also 2 toilets which were pretty decent.
    We went back to the trail and began the final summit climb to the top of Mount Feathertop which took roughly 30 minutes. There was a fair bit of snow up the top but only on one side of the mountain and it looked amazing. The 360 degree views from the top were insane and definitely worth the long hike!
    On the way back we stopped about 30 minutes from the carpark to sit on top of one of the mountains and enjoy the incredible sunset. We got back just before it got completely dark.
    In total we spent 9.5 hours hiking, walked 26km and did 36,000 steps.
    Would highly recommend this hike to everyone!

      It really is one of the most scenic hikes in the whole region. We were very lucky to see that sunset, was worth hiking back in the dark!

    Great to see other people heading out to Mt Feathertop along the Razorback track - I've done it heaps of times, I used to live in Bright and I also can tell you it's a completly different animal during winter. In 2018 I did a snow hike accross the ridge (Not the first time) and everytime I head up there , it's slightly different.. Here's a thing years ago when I started hiking (some 30 years ago...) There was a phone (Which only worked in winter) in Diamantina Hut where you could call the bus to come and pick you up or find out if the road was open all the way done to Harrietville (There were also number for apperarently people at Mt Hotham who could bring out a Pizza there was a menu on the wall - so I would suggest this hut has had some interesting nights...There were also plans at one point during late 80's where there were plans to put a road along the Razorback track so people could get over there easier and go skiiing, luckily this didn't survive the light of day and well thats that.

    I like your video as you gave a nice detailed description rather than just showing you hiking. It’s nice to know your review as I am looking into doing this hike. Thanks

    Oh this brings back some great memories what a treat. We stayed in that Diamantina hut also. It's definitely haunted.

    If you hike a popular & accessible track like the Razorback in peak season, you will see a lot of people. Same goes with camping Federation Hut, but a lot of the year theres barely anyone.
    The weather up there can turn pretty quickly & snow up there in summer.. you need to be prepared for both the sun & snow in all 4 seasons

    • @AdventuresofKatelyn
      @AdventuresofKatelyn  3 роки тому

      Yes Razorback is an extremely popular hike! Should always be prepared for all seasons! You never know what you’ll get up in the alps!

    this is beautiful, i love this such beautiful mountain views and tracks over looking the mountains, its amazing that a bit of snow is on top of the Mt. Feathertop. This will be my next trip. Do you know if there is a car park Diamantina Hut or do you just park on the side of the road? is it safe to leave your car there? im planning to do this all in one day as i don't camp.

    So beautiful, I cant wait to do it myself!
    Fyi :) and I hope im right, but snakes up that altitude are usually what they call a white lip snake, and they don't grow to big and are generallyharmlessif your wearing basic layers. Hopefully that puts you at piece of mind for future alpine hikes.

    Would you recommend this hike or Mt Bogong for a better scenic experience?

    • @AdventuresofKatelyn
      @AdventuresofKatelyn  3 роки тому +1

      In terms of scenery I would probably recommend Mount Feathertop however it is way more popular and busy, so if you’d rather peace and quiet then definitely Mount Bogong which still has very beautiful views! ua-cam.com/video/EmrSP12_jnY/v-deo.html

      @@AdventuresofKatelyn 2020 was the worst ski /snow season in years and years. Usually in October there would be some Easterly facing chutes that might be skiable or good for dare devil snow boarders on the Razorback and Mt. FT. . The snow cover is usually better in Spring up there. However the sun is quite strong in October and the snow thaw and melt period is fully underway.
