Fingers crossed that VRChat is able to make the right changes to swing back from this much stronger.
I hope people understand that the reason I made this video was not to say "VRChat sucks, go to other games" but to highlight for the average player the bad decisions that led them to a point of massive backlash. VRChat's team seems to have finally heard a lot of the feedback and we'll see how this comes to fruition in due time.

I am back from my break by the way! Expect 1 - 3 high quality videos like this per week. I took a lot of time to re-assess my strategy and take time away from "just uploading" to focus on making content I want to, and improving my thumbnails.

There seems to be a frankly disturbing trend among game devs where they just don't give a shit about their communities. I have watched several developers self-destruct doing exactly this kind of shit over the last few years, and yet they never seem to learn. You'd think listening to your main player base would be a priority, but I guess some game devs just don't see it that way. Shame, really.

VRChat didn't create black cat or the avatar you're wearing or the games you play with your friends; the COMMUNITY did. That community will always be there as long as a platform for user generated VR content exists. Other platforms like Chillout are already getting the same worlds and avatars that exist in VRChat because creators are flocking away from VRChat.

Unfortunately I don't think too much action is going to be taken on this topic.
I've played VRChat ever since the week it's come out, and I've seen my fair share of shit that the devs shove in our faces. They don't take into account that people are getting harrassed and abused on the platform, they don't care about security or privacy and better yet they don't consider the fact that *we* want comfort.
This completely takes away the joy in the modding community and rids of accessibility and fun that we had. Half of us don't even use mods maliciously, we just want to be able to have a better experience. This is all really not thought out enough and this has been happening for years. They never think about what we want, they only do it for *their* platform.

Overwhelmingly negative reviews on steam. I genuinely want VRChat to learn from this, but honestly the way they're treating the community right now is my biggest concern. They'll either double down even harder and die for it, and another platform will use them as an example of what not to be, or they can learn, and maybe make some kind of comeback. Maybe actually do some moderation and improve things for the users, rather than double down on terrible decisions and seemingly going fully hostile towards the people that built the platform in the first place.

With everything said and done in the last days I have somewhat of a theory about the reasons behind things.
considering how wrong or at least heavily exaggerated their announcement was I have a hard time believing the update was ever about your security.
it has been said and proven before that crashers are very often not mod based and will continue to work.
harassment and such... idk. have not seen an outcry about it nor have I experienced that.
just blocking someone if they are annoying me seems to have been enough.
    accounts getting stolen through mods?
I guess possible but I have not seen any outcry about that either.
but that it's a keylogger? I don't really buy it.
you already have 2FA which should negate that.
and wouldn't it be easier to just get the auth token via the website? e.g. like Discord accounts get stolen.
it's unlikely those issues are addressed. well I suppose with less users come less reports like that.
so what security was the update about?
for a lack of a better term it secures their "feature monopoly", which I suppose is their right to do.
    what do I mean?
well the one meaningful feature that vrc+ had was more favorite avatars, and that was easily done via mod, even better just search up the public avatar you wanted to use via another mod.
which brings us to their announcement about the features that they are now rolling out.
I don't think these updates were made suddenly. implementing that much in

    • @Mekose
      @Mekose 2 роки тому +6

Imo even if they fix everything, it's too late. They've had years to implement basic QoL and accessibility features and didn't; then they shafted everyone and killed their own platform and *now* after all the backlash they decide they're *going to start working on it.* It's blatantly clear they don't care about their community.
Keep in mind that these features are on other platforms like ChilloutVR from day one as well as multi-threading support, which is why VRC runs so poorly, because VRChat only runs on one CPU core (which mods WERE able to fix; but now you get banned if you try to make the game playable).
I have a hunch this was decided by investors because EAC is the stock standard (and garbage) anti-cheat that every game has, modded clients allow you to have features gained by paying for VRC+ subscription such as more favorited avatars and worlds, and they may be investigating integrating NFTs into VRChat and they want to prevent people from ripping avatars aka "don't screenshot my nft, bro" (which EAC doesn't help because you don't need mods to rip avatars, in fact you can do it from a website so you don't even need the game installed).
Considering how pathetically tone-deaf implementing EAC was, I have to assume this is purely a business move and these are the only reasons I can consider. If it's not that, then it's complete and utter incompetence and lack of care for their community which is also damning.

Yeah I‘m really disappointed in the devs. That update has barely something positive about it or actually nothing cause I can‘t find one. But the most recent one is definitely a step in the right direction but eh. There‘s a lot that they have to do to make VRChat better again. Removing Easy Anti-Cheat would be the best thing they can do but that seems VERY unlikely now.
Honestly tho, I‘m happy for the devs of ChilloutVR and Neos VR. They‘re getting a lot more players now and they‘re definitely more motivated to make their social VR platform better than ever. I‘m very happy about that and I‘m excited for the future of those games!
Anyways, great video ofc, Ivy! You covered pretty much everything important about that one bad update VRChat has made c:

While i understand that the devs want to provide a safer place to hang out, completely removing the modding community and using what is basically one of the most flawed anti-cheat (if you can call it that, it might as well just be bloatware) softwares out there isn't the way to go. Instead of working against the community, they should be working with them. Kinda like how the company Giants Software actively works with their playerbase to improve their Farm Simulator series

VR Chat is sending your PC's data to China.

If they knew backlash would happen, and went ahead with it anyway, then they knew it'd be an unpopular decision. So, why make the decision anyway, like they did? The only thing I can think of is that they wished for the game to be easier to market, somehow. Money seems like the only reason a dev would do something knowing the majority of reviews would cast their game in a negative light.
And what do you know, this comes suspiciously soon after the Quest 2 raises in price. Definitely not connected at all.

In my opinion the game itself isn't bad, it's a game that's completely free to use to talk to friends and other people using an avatar that either you provide or they provide within VRchat. The update may have been a bad move but the backlash is so harsh which in my opinion isn't helping the problem. I'm staying on VRchat only for the fact that people like you and I make worlds/games within VRchat that's fun /passes the time/ allows me to meet more people. Why the heck would I leave those people for the sake of an update. Then again I do not use mods so take this how you will (What's the point I don't need mods to talk to people).

Facebook aka the metaverse had bought half of VR chat back in 2021 and is getting ready to buy the rest of it so best way to get rid of these client people is to use a very easy anti-cheat but I won't be surprised in the next few weeks to coming months that somebody will find a way to get around the anti-cheat but by that time the game's going to be a cesspool of Booth models Quest users Crashers and possibly client users again. ChilloutVR is the future.

I mean the mods where a good thing to have, certainly for those who have disabilities. But calling the game dead is an overstatement. As of after the EAC update the dev team has made some improvements in the beta branch. Which yes they should have added those before the EAC update. I have noticed that there is way fewer crashers. I have not seen any myself but raiding parties on furry worlds has become more frequent (in my experience). I don't think EAC was a bad thing but it's also not the best out there. I'm sticking to vrchat as my friend are still here i made friends on VRChat which i really don't want to lose.

  • @dazkid33
    @dazkid33 2 роки тому +5

Unfortunately, EAC won't be going away any time soon. Its purpose has absolutely nothing to do with protecting its players, given how malicious actors will get their way regardless. Between the avatar theft and the IP scraping, there is some veil of good intention behind it. The true reason is profit driven, no other way to see it. Modded clients allow people to circumvent further paid features and to disable any advertisements introduced in the game. Though, it was generally agreed upon that the biggest names wouldn't intrude on current VRC+ features out of respect for the game and the development team.
I've been saying it ever since this update dropped: introduce a purchase model, heavily restrict the free to play experience, and retain VRC+. If free players can only use a small selection of avatars and access a curated selection of more regulated world instances, then fewer people will be exposed to malicious persons, and people interested can have a small taste of the experience and still hang out with people more established. Most of the community wouldn't bat an eye at, say, $20 to unlock the current experience, and bad actors, if properly reported on enough, won't be incentivized to keep paying money for their ten minutes of fun. Tie the purchase to the VRC account, so it could be shared across platforms, or don't, and double or triple dip. The devs could then implement the features they've promised to plan and silenced people for requesting and relieve dependence on modded clients. It also filters out children, who REALLY shouldn't be left alone on such a platform.
