  • Ever have a need for a special tool, but you just can't justify spending the money for a single use tool? That was me when I had to reseat the valve spring on my Kohler CH23 Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor engine.
A good friend of mine told me, "were there's a will, there's a relative...", or something along those lines. In this video, I will demonstrate how I fabricated a tool to compress the valve springs on my engine.
I hope you enjoy this trivial little tidbit of a video. It's not much, but it is a part of my life, which I want to share for generations to come. Please hit the thumbs up and subscribe if you like the video. Most importantly, please leave a comment or two so I can get to know you a little bit.
If you have constructive criticism, I will be happy accept it, but complaints and rude comments will simply be removed.
If you don't want to put up with my boring introduction, simply skip ahead to 4:21 for the meat and potatoes.
    Thanks so much for watching!

A REAL GOOD FIX I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS YOUNGER WE MADE A HOLLOW SPARK PLUG AND WELDED A AIR FITTING ON AND USED AIR PRESSURE TO HOLD THE VALVES UP

You’re the second person I have heard that from. I sure could have used that!

That was a good idea. To keep the valve seated you can connect an air hose to the spark plug hole, make sure the piston is at the bottom of its stroke. The air pressure will hold it in place. I have done this several times to replace broken or week valve springs in the field.

Good tip! @michael white oldtimer said the same thing! I wish I would have been smart enough to think of that idea.

Dropping a valve can cause serious damage. Good fix! Stay safe.

Thanks, Bruce! I am surprised that it didn’t do some major harm. Lucky I guess!

Haha! You know what they say, "laziness it the mother of invention". I did NOT want to pull that head off. But then your dad, @wayne-wango- wever, and @michael white oldtimer told me about using air pressure through the plug hole to pop the valve up. And my brother-in-law sent me a picture of a spring compression tool that he would have let me borrow for the asking. Everybody had a solution! If only I would have asked for help. Oh well, it was a teachable moment I guess. Give the family our love, Jeremy!

Must be a design flaw. It hasn’t happened since I made the repair. Thanks for the feedback my friend!

@@WaynePolcin Enjoyed your video. I just had the same EXACT issue with my Cadet, so I was glad to find this. Everything worked ok once you got it all back together? I was just curious, too, as to what might make the one half of the keeper pop out like that? Looks like this comment is two years old, so I was wondering if you still figure it was just a design flaw, or have you had any issues with it since?
      Thanks!

It’s been running fine ever since. We sold the mower to my brother in law and he hasn’t had the problem either. I sometimes wonder if was due to hitting some extremely rough terrain. I really don’t know what caused it.

@@WaynePolcin That's encouraging. I just made the repair to my Cadet yesterday. So far, so good...
Thanks again for making that video. It really helped me out a LOT! Ironically, when I pulled off the valve cover, my situation looked EXACTLY the same as the initial picture you included....and I mean EXACTLY...from the angle of the rocker arm to the location where the loose half of the keeper was laying.
I used an old support bracket from a garage door track (you know what I mean?....like a mini piece of angle iron with holes in it) to compress the spring on mine. I had to ream out one hole a little so I had more room around the valve to get those keys back in...and I used one of the bolts from the valve cover gasket instead of the rocker (just because that bolt lined up better with the holes on my bracket/tool) but the principle was the same as what you showed.
I was amazed at how smooth it all worked. For me, it was a miracle from God!

KISS system WP... Keeping it simple and functional and gettin it done. Great tips from the commenters. Hard to believe that keeper came out, didja find any reference on YT that would explain it? Thanks for sharing and caring! Have a good one.

My brother-in-law is extremely knowledgeable on engine topics. He told me this is the second time in a month he has seen this problem on a Kohler engine. It was the rocker arm banging, off center, onto the spring instead of the valve shaft that, I think, knocked the keepers loose. The bigger question is what caused the rocker arm to pivot out of position? The bolt may have been loose. I didn't pay attention when I removed the arm to see if the bolt was slightly loose. After I installed it, it was solid as a rock. So go figure. Thanks for your input buddy. Stay well and kind!

Is it necessity or laziness that is the mother of invention - I can never remember. In my case, it is both! Good to hear from you Angie! Love to you from me and Suzie!

@@WaynePolcin My love to both of you too. I'm so busy lately I barely get time to comment on videos. I got a free small travel trailer I'm trying to dig out from where it's parked. Hopefully It'll be ready for Buckinstock 2021. Did you find a log splitter yet? You can borrow my full beam 25 ton for the fall if we can find a way to get it to you! (no C10 yet my mechanic son has been busy on other stuff).
