Schubert composed this Sonata por Piano and Arpeggione D-821 in November,1824...The ' Arpeggione ' a strange mix of violin and guitar was created by J.G.Staufner and had a short-life...later replaced by Cello. Here a wonderful perform of the version for piano and viola, by Argerich and Bashmet. Bravo !
Don't know what you mean by replaced by cello? The cello existed long before this. You could just as well say replaced by viola! It is true that this sonata is often played on cello,but it is also very popular with violists, who have a smaller repertoire.
