So grateful that Temple has gotten involved in other animal industries as well as cattle. There is still a great deal of work to be done. I hope that she can continue improvements in the poultry and pork industries. Perhaps in time, she can raise them up to an even higher standard of care and stress free caring slaughter.
Joesph Moua I wouldn't "want" to be eaten by anything or anyone else...unless I was dying anyway, and other's survival depended on eating me. I would just hope that they put me out of my misery quickly and effectively. I am actually glad that Dr. Temple Grandin has put herself in the animals shoes in order to design methods of slaughter that minimize the animal's anxiety and suffering. I understand that humans are omnivorous and if we "must" have such an appetite for animal flesh, that these industrialized factory farming methods have to be put in place to meet our demands, then I would hope that they make this process as quick and as painless for the animals as possible. Humans also need to be aware of the environmental impact our "demand" for affordable meat is having on our planet. It wouldn't hurt for the majority of us to lower our meat consumption dramatically as it is also affecting our health. I have made the personal decision to choose VEGAN as often as possible. Peace to all. Bless!

I am absolutely awestruck by this woman’s brilliance and insight. No not because of her “disability” and being autistic - not at all. I’m blown away by her brilliance and her thoughtfulness regarding an industry that desperately needed someone with “fresh eyes” to look at their processes and find ways to improve them. Seeing the various systems that she’s helped to implement shows that improvement is always possible and in all things we should never say that we’ve done it the best we can and that’s that. I’m not a vegan. I’m not an activist. I’m not anything but a guy who found his way here through the internet rabbit hole and stumbled upon something here that is truly fascinating.

Sean O'Gorman But your so benevolent that’s you would rather these turkeys be killed while fully conscious by wild animals...So kind, so benevolent are you~
Sean O'Gorman Tell me about it! Vegans really need to stop exploiting so many animals everyday!! Vegans exploit more animals than other people. The Vegan Society has an ethical stance[1] against beekeeping, but many commercial crops[2] require to be pollinated by domestic bees that are forced to breed and then worked to death. It's basically impossible to have a nutritionally complete vegan diet without forced pollination, but fodder crops do not exploit bees. Human food crops directly kill five times[3] as many bees as all livestock slaughter combined. Vegans should also make sure that their seasonally changing food exporters don't rely on insects[4], terriers[5], sheep[6], ducks[7], organic fertilizers[8] or anything from developing countries[9] where animal labor is still common. kimmie Wise 75 % of crops grown are fed to the billions of animals we breed annually, unnecessarily, to be exploited and killed . We don’t need to eat animals to be health, we do however need plants. Feeding billions of animals to get second hand nutrients is the most inefficient way to eat, causing the most amount of deaths. Of course veganism is about granting all sentient beings rights to their bodily autonomy. Plant based eating causes the least amount of “crop deaths “ , and would be a world where we don’t unnecessarily exploit innocent beings for their flesh. Also best for the planet. Sean O'Gorman this is false. Most crops fed to animals are byproducts of industry processing. They were unfit for human consumption. Rather than composting (which emits carbon), the byproducts are fed to animals and converted into protein. Stop talking lies.

@@theecologist10 If you are familiar with the older ways of mechanized poultry processing you would realize that the birds were hung live and basically rode upside-down to have their heads "pinched" off on the line. Also, you will notice, as is shown to us by Dr. Grandin that the birds, when young, have tons of space and they grow familiar with their surroundings and other birds and they are thriving in the house environment. You will also notice that the males are "displaying" or showing off to the females in the house - that wouldn't happen with a stressed bird. They are then taken, as comfortably as can be, to the processing plant and are "stunned" not knowing of the carrying methods. Yes, these companies obviously care for the birds as humanely as possible. The USDA is always present making sure all steps are in place.
@@misplacedcajun2325 just because it's better than previous methods, doesn't make it humane, that room is nothing like their natural environment would be
@@theecologist10 You're right, sir. I am an avid turkey hunter myself, and I'd much rather see them in the wild. Also, please know that your interest in the betterment of animal farming is much appreciated.
being humane is awesome. i love turkeys both as live birds and as food. they are beautiful birds and when God gave us domain in this world He intended us to take care of it and not destroy it. After the fall when God gave us animals to eat He still intended us to take care of them and be humane. it is good to see how the birds I eat are taken care of before i consume them.
This Lady SINGLEHANDEDLY has done more for the humane treatment of Beef, Pork, and Poltry harvesting for human consumption than anyone who is ever lived.
Factory farmed turkeys lead a horrific sterile crowded life. Years ago they actually lived a pretty good life on a real farm. Died young but while alive had a good life.
excellent video it answered so many questions that I always wondered about and I feel better that I see that animals are being treated humanely before they are put down thank you
I slowed the video down wanting to see if their beaks had been cut and sadly they have. It would be nice if the powers that be could come up with another solution to beak slicing. Dr. Grandin is a marvel and should be mandatory study for anyone dealing with animal welfare.
Aaron Gerow lmao ur ridiculous, debeaking is very painful for them. Trust me, it's a lot better for the birds than letting them cannibalize each other. And it's not a density issue, 2 birds in a field together will do it to each other.
I am really impressed. I have raised my own turkeys and butchered them. The conveyor belt was the smoothest, calmest and injury free system I have seen, making this humane. I admire Temple's explanations, it is true and factual. Nice job!
@@theecologist10 Well they seem to be moving and walking a lot for a group of animals that have zero space. I’m sure you think a one bed room apartment is a “broom closet”.

It's just amazing operation I grew up on a farm we killed our own chickens in turkeys used to dip the chicken in hot water after killing it and pull all the feathers off .Thank you for the video.
As someone who cares about the animals welfare during this process, this is far more humane than the other videos of people shoving them in funnels and doing appalling jobs at slicing their throats. Makes me lean far more towards this form of factory farming over any other option. PS...what companies use this process. I will buy from them.
@@theecologist10 If there is no space to move then how are they moving and walking around in that very clip genius? Additionally these animals naturally huddle together, especially in winter and colder temperatures. Additionally turkeys are flock animals and naturally congregate anyways.
"Far more humane" and yet still not humane. Killing half as many humans as you did last year is "more humane" for a serial killer, still not humane though.
Just out of curiosity why slit the throat instead of complete decapitation? Obviously the heads get removed, is there a reason for it happening during a whole other process?
@@theecologist10 Zero space? If they had zero space there wouldn’t be a space around the humans walking through the crowd. There might not be room for running, but turkeys don’t really run around anyways. They just strut leisurely.
I thought this was a very respectable video that shows the humane way that 99% of our meat goes from farm to table. This practice is much similar to the Tyson Corporation in that automation is key to successful production and safety. I wish more people would watch videos like this to help dis-bunk the idea that meat production is cruel and inhumane.
I'm afraid those statements are untrue. It's no myth that it is inhumane, and in actual fact, 98% of animal farming is factory farming, which means male chicks being ground up or suffocated in giant plastic bags, sheep, cows, pigs and poultry being kept in such cramped conditions that they can barely move their whole lives and they never see the sun, chickens having their beaks chopped off so that because they are so distressed, they can't peck the other birds around them, calves being ripped from their mothers which causes irreversible mental damage, and stun methods that rarely work, causing the animals to struggle in the air, hung from their leg by a chain before their throat is slit, and running around the kill floor in terror. I could go on and on. The industry is NOT humane.
@@kayleighgriva4817 Well, that's just blatantly and provably false. There is literally a video in this same series about the slaughter of both pigs and cows and none of them are hung by chains before the slaughter. Cows are not harmed by the taking of calves on two fronts. 1. Beef cattle keep their calves and in fact motherhood instincts are bred for because they're kept on open ranges and need to protect the calves from predators. And 2. dairy cows are the exact opposite, and lose interest in their calves the moment they get them cleaned off from the birth smells. Calves are removed from them for their own safety, because dairy cows are so blase and apathetic that they FREQUENTLY LAY ON CALVES that are left with them, smothering and\or crushing them. All things we have video evidence of thanks to Iowadairyfarmer and TDF Honest Farming on Facebook, the former showing how calm and fine mother cows are with their calves being taken, and the later showing explicitly the consequences of not being able to do it quick enough. The things you mention don't happen because they don't make SENSE. The point of animal agriculture is to make QUALITY end products. All the practices you suggest would harm the animals-- WHY would someone so money-minded as you say do something that would HARM the source of their money? It doesn't even make logical sense. Poultry birds don't need to be stressed to peck at each other. Or anything, for that matter. I've literally watched video of a free-range bird who cannibalized ITSELF. Had to have a hood put over it because it kept pecking huge sores in its own skin and eating itself. Birds are MEAN. They are dinosaurs and they know it.

We should be trying to make it that all the animals we eat get treated with this level of care, not trying to stop people eating meat all together. If vegans really care about the welfare of animals then this should be your priority don’t attack people for eating meat and assume your doing any good to animals your not
I worked those farms... the turkeys are used to being around people. a farm worker walks through twice a day to pick up any dead ones, or the other turkeys will eat them. If you find one with a blood spot... you wring the neck, as they will eat an injured comrade alive. They are cannibals. You burn the dead. Disease is a big concern with turkeys. You never enter without dressing in a suit and stepping in iodine. Decades ago, I also worked the processing plants, very efficient. The first 15 minutes of a workers shift seems ok... we speed it up, after an hour the workers are buzzing along on autopilot. Not a great job.

Temple Grandin is my hero
Just want to share that my last thanksgiving turkey was bombay, my grandmother cooked it before she passed on.
You can tell this lady cares about her craft. Very good video
being humane is awesome. i love turkeys both as live birds and as food. they are beautiful birds and when God gave us domain in this world He intended us to take care of it and not destroy it. After the fall when God gave us animals to eat He still intended us to take care of them and be humane. it is good to see how the birds I eat are taken care of before i consume them.

Factory farmed turkeys lead a horrific sterile crowded life. Years ago they actually lived a pretty good life on a real farm. Died young but while alive had a good life.
yep cause they led such a good life that none died due to rampant disease or coyote attacks. these animals are living a much cleaner life and safer.
Those are beautifully raised turkeys. I'm hungry, let's eat.
excellent video it answered so many questions that I always wondered about and I feel better that I see that animals are being treated humanely before they are put down thank you
They have zero space to move around theyre crammed in theres how is this humane
I slowed the video down wanting to see if their beaks had been cut and sadly they have. It would be nice if the powers that be could come up with another solution to beak slicing. Dr. Grandin is a marvel and should be mandatory study for anyone dealing with animal welfare.
ExpandMyLife if you can get them not to attack each other some other way... Pecking order is a thing and some birds are incredibly brutal.
ExpandMyLife reduce the size of the flock, less beaking
ExpandMyLife it isn’t painful for the birds, but likely stressful and can cause difficulties feeding
Aaron Gerow lmao ur ridiculous, debeaking is very painful for them. They have a lot of sensitive nerves, it’s like if someone was to cut on ur lip.

Trust me, it's a lot better for the birds than letting them cannibalize each other. And it's not a density issue, 2 birds in a field together will do it to each other.

Do we know which turkey house this is? What brand is being presented here? I'd like to support them.
I am really impressed. I have raised my own turkeys and butchered them. The conveyor belt was the smoothest, calmest and injury free system I have seen, making this humane. I admire Temple's explanations, it is true and factual. Nice job!
They have zero space to move around theyre crammed in theres how is this humane
@@theecologist10 Well they seem to be moving and walking a lot for a group of animals that have zero space. I’m sure you think a one bed room apartment is a “broom closet”.

Those are big turkeys. What is the time from beginning to end of processing?
It's just amazing operation I grew up on a farm we killed our own chickens in turkeys used to dip the chicken in hot water after killing it and pull all the feathers off .Thank you for the video.
As someone who cares about the animals welfare during this process, this is far more humane than the other videos of people shoving them in funnels and doing appalling jobs at slicing their throats. Makes me lean far more towards this form of factory farming over any other option. PS...what companies use this process. I will buy from them.
They have zero space to move around theyre crammed in theres how is this humane
@@theecologist10 If there is no space to move then how are they moving and walking around in that very clip genius? Additionally these animals naturally huddle together, especially in winter and colder temperatures. Additionally turkeys are flock animals and naturally congregate anyways.
"Far more humane" and yet still not humane. Killing half as many humans as you did last year is "more humane" for a serial killer, still not humane though.
pleasantly surprised to see casual autism acceptance, support, and proper terminology here. not something I expected from a turkey video!

@@kayleighgriva4817 literally everything you said is made up bullshit by idiotic activists
Very, very nice! That is reality, Congratulations miss Grandin. Regards from Lima, Peru.

We should be trying to make it that all the animals we eat get treated with this level of care, not trying to stop people eating meat all together. If vegans really care about the welfare of animals then this should be your priority don’t attack people for eating meat and assume your doing any good to animals your not
This padu is great at this unlike the others
That intro music is surprisingly catchy...

Thank you ma'am for caring for God's animals
Imagine looking at what we do to animals and claiming there is any kind of god behind this process. Truly remarkable.
Wonder why they were dead?..maybe no air...grass and sun?
