The Canadian blue tooth model works very well. I have used it on several vehicles and it gives good accurate data. I bought it on Scotty's recommendation just over a year ago. Thanks Scotty.
Ever use the xtool a30m? It seems like it compares well to the autel in the 400 dollar range but is a bluetooth unit for 150 ish similar to blue driver
@@tooltime9260 I don't think you're supposed to leave it in ALL the time just while you're road testing and sitting parked working on it. Scotty has said in the past that some cars go into diagnostic mode and it won't appreciate going on daily driving like that.
Pro tip: If you have a kid away in college (or anywhere) buy a scan tool, put it in a ziplock bag and leave it in the car they are using. I bought ANDEL AD200 for around $20 BUT for some reason it does not reset codes so I wish I bought the ANDEL AD410 ($35). One can also stop at the box stores and get a free scan too. Good luck and here is hoping you do't get the call I did that the light is on.
@@CarAudioObsessions What's the best cheap scan tool for DIY like me. I have Toyota Prius 2013 with 210000 miles. I am looking for scan tool just in case I need it , maybe to find out future problem with hybrid battery or some thing else
Bought one today!!! Cleared an engine light that has been lit almost since I bought my 2005 Silverado. My mechanic couldn't isolate a problem and told me to just ignore it. I've been doing that for 18 years! Now --- it's gone! That alone was worth the low price of the scanner.
Professor Kilmer you should give a course on how to interpret the data on scan tools. Such as Lambda or how to diagnose a worn timing belt or more involved items on these scan tools. Knowledge is power. Thanks for all the great videos.
All these scan tools available on the market are great for DIYers, but sadly this has also led to an increase in auto theft. For criminals in the know, it's super easy to steal a car nowadays that have a push button start. If they can gain access to the vehicle and have a blank fob and mid level scan tool, they can program the fob to start the car in a couple minutes. Sometimes older tech can be better.
Super-useful video; this is a great one to show folks who have never seen or used these tools before. It's incredible how much info they can provide - even the cheaper ones if you find the right one.
Scottie, I bought the bluedriver scanner & got a good price $79 I'm able to check codes and reset them for FREE :) Well worth the price... I would not pay more that that for it. If I paid out that much I'd go for one of the hand held ones you reviwed.
I have a Codekey OBD II scan tool that I purchased at Costco many years ago for under $40. It has paid for itself many times over. I keep it in the trunk of one of my cars. It is time to purchase a more-capable model. Thank you for the reviews of some low-cost alternatives!
Old school mechcanic here. A little late to the party..lol Need to learn more about the newer cars as these scan tools are important tools to have. Been working with basic obd2 scanners. Would love to have a more advanced unit and learn to read the live data. Dont mechanic for a living, just take care of personal vehicles and family and friends. Thanks for all your videos.
I use Torque on Android with an ELM bluetooth tool for simple diagnostics. As I have a VW, I also have VAG-Tacho and VAG-COM. The names of those two always make me chuckle.
Scotty you are right. Spend $300 for a better scan tool. That is 2 hours of labor you will spend at the dealer or mechanic. This way you know in advance what is the problem with your vehicle.
I use an EML327, which plugs into USB, initially bought to use with my Ford Transit via ForScan. It's just an interface, not an actual scanner as such, but the upside is I can install various brands of software onto the laptop. The downside is I need to cart the bulky laptop around to use it. You would remember as well as I do Scotty, the days when a multimeter and hand held tach would tell us all we needed to know 😅🤣
Ahh, the days gone by. My grandmother used to say, “Don’t buy any car with things that are too fancy. The more new things they have, the more things can break.” She was in her eighties when she died in 2011. Smart lady, and a real spitfire. 😂😂
This Shade-Tree Wrench has been using Blue Driver BT scan tool for 6 years and it's never let me down! It's extremely capable, very small, doesn't take up a whole lot of room in your tool box and there's no screen to break or scratch. Why pay for a scan tool with a screen when you have a nicer screen on your phone or tablet!
I've watched many Scotty videos. Which scan tool do I see the most? In the hand held low to mid price category, I see that Innova model the most by far. That's the one Scotty seems to pick up most often.
The Innova 5160 is the same as the Harbor Freight Zurich ZR 15s, when I updated it the 1st time it even named the X86 folder for the downloader “Innova”
There are a lot of options. I see some for $10 bucks. I don't want to go full shade-tree mechanic, but I like to do the simple stuff and at least understand the bigger problems, while not wasting my time on a gadget. Looks like BlueDrive may be the sweet spot. Thanks Scotty!
I was thinking about buying that blue driver one. Glad I got to see it here. I was looking for a wireless one that does NOT require a yearly subscription fee, and one that will read ABS codes, the one I currently have does not read ABS code, my ABS light was on and it did not come up with any codes. I think I am going to buy the blue driver one.
Hey Scotty,Dave from Whittier, CA. I have a 200.00 Foxwell It's ok but slow. It doesn't have the IM feature. I'd love to have something like the Innova if you feel generous. You are the car garru. Learned more in 3 years than I learned the rest of my life. Tanx.
Personally, I use the Ross-Tech VCDS interface and I think it's excellent, it's cheap and the software will run on any old laptop, the company frequently updates the software for free so it's never out of date and I've never failed to fix a problem with my car using this system. However, it is dedicated to VAG vehicles (Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW).
I have an old SPX scanner that stops at year 2006. I paid $200 for it. It’s very useful for reading live data. When it gives you the code it also gives you the definition. However, it will read codes that are not pre-programmed into it. In that case, it shows you the code, and the screen reads “Definition not found. Please consult service manual“ It has saved my bacon more than once!
Thanks Scotty a great video again I'm looking for a new scan tool it's difficult going by online reviews but now I have a better idea of which one to get.
Good man you are Scotty. Thank you for your knowledge and advice. Great stuff! I’m old like you and uniquely rare like you. 😊66 going on 23 next b-day. It’s a miracle.
I started with a Blue Driver. I didn't like using the small screen on my smartphone so I bought a USB dongle to use with laptop software (OBDWiz and FORScan). Do you have any experience with either? I realize that not all functions will work on all cars. Is there any resource which tells what systems/modules/sensors can be checked on different cars? Specifically, my daily driver is a 1996 Dodge Intrepid (3.5L). I have a FSM and know that the car stores transmission codes. They don't come up with any scan tool I've used so I'm wondering if there is anything that will retrieve them (other than a dealer's tool).
When I was a teen, I had an uncle.. And he was the scan tool... Checking the battery was taking a pair of pliers, carefully touching one handle to the negative side and the other to the positive, If you got a bright blue shower of sparks, then the battery was ok, If you got nothing or next to it, battery was dead...😂.
I picked up an Innova 5210 for $100. Been meaning to get a scan tool but finally did bc I went to look at buying a 2016 Mazda 3 6spd manual. Also want to be able to learn more stuff about fixing my own cars. It's a nice little tool. Also has live data and can test the battery and alternator.
I have a little hand held one i loan out alot and unfortunatly, friends always bring it back....I'm waiting for it to stay away so I can get a new big screen one ,
Hey Scotty, I was just talking about your videos to some new work friends and explaining how OBD2 scan tools are so important when doing your own work. I will definitely be sharing this one to them and introducing more faithful followers to your channel. 😎👍
I have Autel MK808BT, MD806 Pro and Xtool A30M. The MK808BT has bluetooth paid $500 3 years ago only free one year updates. MD806 has lifetime updates paid $230 3 years ago. A30M has bluetooth dongle and lifetime updates I paid $200 last year when scotty reviewed it. The A30M is my go to it has bi directional but the MD806 pro does not, and the fact it does almost everything the D7 does except key programming. For the price point the XTOOL A30M is awesome when I need keys I use MK808BT but like scotty said it does not program keys on every car. I programmed key fob on 2019 accord sport worked like a charm.
I wanted key programming so I got the D8 with Bluetooth. It also unlocks special function access when scanning and selecting the different modules. The A30M would be my next choice if I didn't need it. I think it's the best value for what it offers especially the bidirectional control
By any chance does anyone of Scotty's fans remember the company he recommended for getting auto paint? I can't find the video. Some knuckle head skimmed the back of my sons 2021 Corolla. The plastic bumper has tire crap on it and they scratched the paint on the metal in front of the wheel also. Thanks for any help
I recently bought an Autel MK808Z. I'm on the hunt for a good used vehicle and will bring it along when I find something I like. No hiding from the scan tool.
@watapp6452 Scamming people is a dishonest and unethical practice that can cause immense harm to individuals and society as a whole. It involves using deceptive tactics to deceive someone into giving away their money, personal information, or other valuable assets. Scamming not only causes financial loss but also erodes trust in others and undermines the sense of security in society. Moreover, scams can have severe consequences for vulnerable individuals who may not have the resources or knowledge to protect themselves. Therefore, it is crucial to refrain from scamming people and to promote an honest and ethical approach to interactions and transactions. By doing so, we can create a more trustworthy and secure environment for everyone.
@watapp6452 Stealing someone's identification is a severe violation of their privacy and can have devastating consequences. It involves obtaining and using another person's personal information, such as their name, Social Security number, or credit card details, without their consent. This can lead to identity theft, where the thief can open new credit accounts, access existing accounts, and make purchases or withdrawals without the victim's knowledge or permission. The victim may suffer significant financial losses, a damaged credit score, and may even face legal consequences if the thief engages in criminal activities using their identity. Moreover, the stress and emotional toll of dealing with the aftermath of identity theft can be overwhelming. Therefore, it is essential to respect the privacy and personal information of others and refrain from stealing someone's identification. It is crucial to take measures to protect one's own identity and to report any suspicious activity promptly to law enforcement authorities to prevent further harm
I had a constant problem at one point with the engine light in my Audi. I would always panic and used to call a repair shop immidiately and make appointments. got fed up with it that and bought a 100€ reader. I used the device about ten times to clear the engine light on my own until I got bored and eventually changed the lambda sensor that was giving the fault code. Even a cheaper reader saves your time and money - clearing the code at a shop always costs some 20-30€
thx scotty i was asking for a good scan tool & programing tools in ur site this video is it for the scan tool :D what about reprogramming? like changing speed limits to the padel or even cruise control enable/disable some annoying worning rings like seatbelt etc...
I have a 2001 Nissan Centra it's 5 speed 4 cylinders when I get in to start it you have to pump the gas pedal to get it started once I get it started it revés up and down still drives fine but when you stop after driving it it stays revés real high and when you drive something you have to really press the gas I took it auto zone and had it put on a code checker and there's about thirteen of them help please
I love the Blue Driver thing because anytime something is not mechanically wrong but it has computer software issues then I can press the "clear" button then "all codes" and it will reset any non factory code back to default on every single module in the system!
recommendations for one to use on an older Lexus hybrid? because they don't do everything and I think I need to put those into Inspection Mode to scan?
When you have a car with manual transmission, you must buy a scan tool, that can provide more of the engine information. No need to to check the transmission then.
Scotty, thanks for your video’s! I find them very informative. I have been looking at getting a $400 type scanner, so this video came out at a perfect time. Question, what do the software updates normally run on Topdon ArtiDiag Pro?
I truly wish we had a mechanic like you around I brought my truck to tire Kingdom they have the power steering system glad because for some reason the 99 and 2000 Ford rangers need a -17 Pound before you go chock 2 chock will you blow the it also only takes transmission not power steering I told him this over and over and they didn't listen do all the the seals out they also found I needed a steering knuckle they put the wrong size on only half the brake pad touches the Rotor which they used what they used steering knuckle and dust shield
Hi Scotty, do you know of a scan tool that can check mileage accuracy on 2010 honda fit? Does the car have mileage stored in any locations other than odometer?
Considering it and the xtool a30m. Xtool looks like they're offering the autel level product but in the cheaper dongle form factor. Trying to see if people have ever tried both
I got a PT tool for 40 dollars and it diagnosed the issue in my Mercedes Benz correctly. Unless you are a mechanic or a serious do it yourself person I don’t know if it worth spending too much money on a scanner.
I guess I'm not stupid because I have the CGSULIT SC204, but I AM stupid because of the question I need to ask... If I plug this into my car, and the car cranks but doesn't start, will it tell me why it won't start? Like fuel or spark issue? I'd appreciate any help. Love ya Scotty!
Hi Scotty, Love your videos. I'm your average 60 year old DIY guy. Been working on cars for 45 years or so. Mostly older, 50's 60's and a little maintenance on modern cars. having to work more on modern cars lately as my kids are starting to drive etc.. My Innova 3100 died. Am looking at replacing it. On your recommendation, considering Blue Driver or mid level, Innova or topdon etc.. ($300 - $400 range) Is there really enough functionality improvement to warrant the the extra cost?

I have a little hand held one i loan out alot and unfortunatly, friends always bring it back....I'm waiting for it to stay away so I can get a new big screen one ,
Thanks for the interesting video Scotty. Some people like to have a shot of Scotch every day. I like to have a shot of Scotty every day.
Scotty should compare the bluedriver dongle against the obdlink mx+ dongle
Thanks for the comprehensive video Scotty ... You're crack'in me Up !!!
Hey Scotty, I was just talking about your videos to some new work friends and explaining how OBD2 scan tools are so important when doing your own work.
I will definitely be sharing this one to them and introducing more faithful followers to your channel. 😎👍
I have a similar scan tool except I don’t know what half of the things mean in the live data
My HyperTough BlueTooth App Dongle just arrived from Walmart for $30 today! Great timing.
Bleed your brakes ?Scotty Scotty, Scotty I know you know better but I do know this I am Thankful for the Video . Great Info Video once again Thanks
Yup exactly. Next time I'm shopping for a used car I'll take my Xtool D8
If they give you any trouble about wanting to hook up the scan tool run away
what about the ones that reprogram your engine and transmission settings for fun and performance
Even a cheaper reader saves your time and money - clearing the code at a shop always costs some 20-30€
What a code means a problem, why just clear the code 😅
thx scotty
i was asking for a good scan tool & programing tools
in ur site
this video is it
for the scan tool :D
what about reprogramming?
like changing speed limits to the padel
or even cruise control
enable/disable some annoying worning rings like seatbelt
etc...
Thank you for this awesome video as usual, I want to ask you about rear suspension airbags BMW X5 how to install them properly?
Thank you
Sam
I have a 2001 Nissan Centra it's 5 speed 4 cylinders when I get in to start it you have to pump the gas pedal to get it started once I get it started it revés up and down still drives fine but when you stop after driving it it stays revés real high and when you drive something you have to really press the gas I took it auto zone and had it put on a code checker and there's about thirteen of them help please
hello Scotty, working on an old SBC no ODB port. is there something I could use to help me diagnose the problem..
I could use one of these! Does this model code the BCM, I have to replace mine?
Scotty, thanks for your video’s! I find them very informative. I have been looking at getting a $400 type scanner, so this video came out at a perfect time. Question, what do the software updates normally run on Topdon ArtiDiag Pro?
Recommendations for falcon06 with an ob2 connection? Might need to get into it further, from Australia.
Scotty, you’re a great American sir!!
Hi Scotty, do you know of a scan tool that can check mileage accuracy on 2010 honda fit? Does the car have mileage stored in any locations other than odometer?
The Blue Driver is the one I got for my Mustang and it works very well Scotty. Like it a lot. 😎👌👍
I use one on my Jeep. Works fine.
Considering it and the xtool a30m. Xtool looks like they're offering the autel level product but in the cheaper dongle form factor. Trying to see if people have ever tried both
Innova also manufactures the Zurich brand from Harbor Freight
Is there a tool scan for a 2001 Toyota Tubdra.
I got a PT tool for 40 dollars and it diagnosed the issue in my Mercedes Benz correctly. Unless you are a mechanic or a serious do it yourself person I don’t know if it worth spending too much money on a scanner.
thanks Scotty.
Scotty is my guru 🙏
I'm a mobile mechanic and trying to decide between the topdon and the autel. Both look and seem to perform great.
You should consider thinkdiag’s scantool they’re fairly cheap but do a whole lot
Superb work Scotty I respect your art, you're a modern day Robin Hood in the field of revelation,
I hope you treat that beautiful pup well Scotty. He looked as if he/she is afraid of you.
Know of a decent price obd2 scanner that will read transmission issues and electrical possibly?
Hi Scotty, Love your videos. I'm your average 60 year old DIY guy. Been working on cars for 45 years or so. Mostly older, 50's 60's and a little maintenance on modern cars. having to work more on modern cars lately as my kids are starting to drive etc.. My Innova 3100 died. Am looking at replacing it. On your recommendation, considering Blue Driver or mid level, Innova or topdon etc.. ($300 - $400 range) Is there really enough functionality improvement to warrant the the extra cost?
Nice...Many thanks Scotty.
I wonder how Any of these units work compared to dedicated Vida Dice for Volvo (that's their factory software and tool) ?
