  • Learn about the 5+ ways Louis and Lincoln were amazingly alike: Battles, Bondage, Binds, Bodies, Buildings, and a Belief in George Washington's greatness!
What do Louis XVI and Lincoln have in common?
    1. Battles:
    a. Louis XIV: Start of French Revolution: Storming of (fort) Bastille
    b. Lincoln: Start of American Civil War: Attack on Fort Sumter
    2. Bondage:
    a. While France no longer had land-bound serfs, peasants were bound by heavy debts to aristocrats, and thus were “economic slaves.”
    b. America had slaves and would soon have prisoners denied due process.
    3. Binds
    a. (i) Louis XVI wanted to destroy Bastille’s prison and replace it with a public plaza dedicated to him as the “restorer of public freedom.”
(ii) Lincoln wanted to save the Union, but prohibiting slavery spread set off the Civil War.
    b. (i) Louis XVI was torn between Second Estate (aristocrats) and Third Estate (people) demands. Vacillation between keeping promises to each group brought unstoppable violence (civil war).
(ii) To fight his war, Lincoln found significant numbers of Southern sympathizers in the North. He revoked the Writ of Habeas Corpus and had many of them imprisoned without trial for extended periods throughout the war, this action called “The American Bastille.”
    4. Bodies:
    a. Both were tall for their times. Louis was six feet one inches tall. Lincoln was six feet four inches tall (the tallest American president).
    b. Both Louis and Lincoln, viewed as freedom-lovers by many but tyrants by their executioners, “took it in the head.” Louis by the guillotine, Lincoln by gunshot.
    5. Buildings
    a. Besides Versailles, the Bastille was most associated with Louis.
    b. Today, the Lincoln Memorial is most associated with Lincoln.
Their architectural similarities are striking. Accurate Bastille dimension measurement can be found at:

    6. Belief (in George Washington)
Both thought highly of President George Washington! Louis, through his financial and military support, helped Washington make the United States of America. Lincoln, through his commitment to Union, helped Washington, his hero, save the United States of America. So, why not read about how Washington made America great!? After the fall of France’s Bastille, Lafayette gave its main key to Washington. Upon receiving it, Washington called it "a token of victory gained by Liberty over Despotism." The Book, "George Washington's Liberty Key: Mount Vernon's Bastille Key - the Mystery and Magic of Its Body, Mind, and Soul," is a best-seller at Mount Vernon. Also available at Amazon.com
NB: The book "American Bastile [Bastille]: A History of the Illegal Arrests and Imprisonment of American Citizens During the Late Civil War," was written by John A. Marshall in 1876.
