The men that burnt down the White House where not actually British they where born in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 those men every single one of them where as Canadian as could be the British take credit because Technically Canada 🇨🇦 wasn’t a country yet and it was owned by the Queen of England but in reality the British did nothing to the White House and the British lost the last battle of the war of 1812 even tho they outnumbered Andrew Jackson and his men 5-1 they still lost and Andrew Jackson cut the heads off 4 British officers....

While slavery may have been abolished on the island the UK sits on, it certainly was not abolished on all the nations they invaded and annexed into the 'UK' and certainly was not in the nations they colonized (including, shocker of shockers here, the Americas). Not only was it not abolished but they enslaved people in many of these regions and they not only enslaved them but they made a huge business of taking them around in their ships and selling them all over the world.

Same said people will keep worshipping and since 2020 there has been a divide not seen since the Civil War, only this time it is seemingly far worse and a more dangerous boiling pot. I pray America survives this horrific period in its history. Sad to think that our country's 250th anniversary is coming up close in 2026. :-(

To be clear, this was payback after the Americans had spent the previous years trying to invade & colonise Canada (including burning a number of key buildings in York). It was never meant to be an occupation, hence why they left within 24 hours. The whole thing was similar to the retaliatory burning of Persepolis by Alexander, as retaliation for the Persian burning of the Athenian Acropolis. Kudos to Dolley Madison, she had cojones to stay back and save items even after her husband had cut & run.

I’m a Brit, and one of the reasons why they became successful in the theatre of battle was born out constant evolution from centuries of war,on land and sea,and the ability to learn from experience. But at the end of all this was a brutality and ruthlessness, that shaped the character of the nation. I’m glad America found its freedom, and resisted taxation without representation. Throughout this time the British had more serious problems, one of which,of course being Napoleon and French imperialism

They left a important part out as Washington burned later at night a fierce storm blew in. It put out the fires and the winds were so strong that cannons were moved. As a result the British forces were so battered it was decided to leave and cut short their travels.

I live close to the Harry S Truman Presidential Library. It has on display old wooden support beams from the East Room floor that are burned and scorched during the 1814 fire. (Apparently, when they rebuilt the White House they tried to salvage as much material as possible.) Under Truman, of course, the White House was completely gutted and remodeled. New steel beams were installed in the 1940's to keep the White House standing for another 200 years. Some of the workmen gave President Truman a few of the burnt beams as a gift to his museum. They're fascinating.
