Expert explains North Carolina stingray's unique pregnancy

- After Charlotte, the North Carolina stingray who mysteriously became pregnant, went viral, our team spoke with an expert at the Tennessee Aquarium to explain how this peculiar pregnancy is possible.
Charlotte said “fine, I’ll do it myself”
We not ready for the sharkray
flying pigs and invisible spiders first right?
first we need the koallaby
It’s called a skate and they exist, they’re pretty docile.
We're
We already have shark rays technically. It’s not a shark and stingray hybrid
It " found a way"
Thank you for this 😂
Or was she ever housed with males at some point in her life? Some animals can store sperm for long periods of time to use at a later date. There’s already been research suggesting some stingrays can, so maybe this incident can further help that research.
Snakes do this. The Reptarium in Michigan has an Anaconda that has given birth twice without a male involvement. The first time, the surviving baby didn't live for very long. I don't think she made it to the 1st she'd. However they have a baby from the second birth a year later and it has been at least half a year now.. This girl is Thriving
Charlotte must have a very strong maternal need... life finds a way!
I'm sure they could find a noisier place for an interview
Yes, it was great fun thinking of a stingray and a shark.
Whoa. Parthenogenesis is fascinating!
It's funny that you mention it. Because the TV series House MD. Did an episode of Parthenogenic (Virgin Birth). Spoiler alert of that episode. It turns out the patient wasn't a virgin. Just wanted to trick her fiancé into thinking it was a miracle conception of God. Y'all know House he did fake testing results. Just to please the patient. 😂
Other, more qualified experts do not believe parthenogenesis is what we're seeing with Charlotte.
@@saradapagediocletian9707what are they saying happened?
@@TheKatarinaGiselleParthenogenesis is effectively self cloning. With Charlotte scientists believe she actually fertilized her own egg cell with a polar body. She literally bred with herself rather than just cloning herself.
@@saradapagediocletian9707what makes them more qualified?
“There’s a lot of fun things you can think about…” um what sir?
Immaculate conception. Stingray messiah.
Shark was just excited and thought he was pounding the ground
This made me laugh harder than it should have
💀😂😂😂😂😂
What Ew
Stop guessing and confirm. We all suspected what this "expert" said a long time ago. Do a DNA test to check if they're actually clones.
Take a seat. You can wait
Once the baby is born they’ll be able too, I think she is still pregnant
IF...... this stingray has never been with a male stingray.....the offspring will be female and it will be a clone. Period !!!!!! Reptiles do it, too. When no male has ever been present, present, the female, the mom, is using HER DNA ONLY to make the baby ....thus it is a clone.....unless at some point in the past, she had been with a male and retained his sperm.

The segment's clickbait title is at fault -- they promised an answer and only gave us speculation.
Exactly
Where was this guy when they were trying to convince us that sharkrays could exist?
Well he only implied that the pp couldn't reach the v.
My question is if it's possible to even crossbreed artificially. If it is, maybe some of this sharks seed found it's way in with water through the v rather than pp going in v.
So a virgin birth in a stingray
The Jesus of stingrays
The child or childs gonna has ability to swim on the ground
Worker Bees, Ants, reptiles, certain parrots are known for that as well
Baby stesus 😅
@@cAlmliKeAboMb2023Jesus wasn’t real so
The baby sharks are so cute!!!!
Baby shark doo doo doo
I was making the dumbest face watching them squirm around in those little tubs!!
I want. I want so bad. Can I order one of those containers and I’ll take whichever shark comes in it?
When I was younger I stayed at a hotel with baby hammer head sharks swimming in a saltwater pond thing and it blew my mind. I could stare at the little heads forever.
Find it funny that not once did we see a baby Ray, we saw baby sharks, shark eggs but no baby Ray..
That’s a stingray egg, they look nigh identical.
Because biologically, THEYRE NIGH IDENTICAL.
@@bogan8865yup...they are a Clone to the mom and so will always be female. Snakes do this too!!!! Both live bearing and egg laying. It is a survival mechanism.
There are lizards that do this also BTW there's only females of the species and there's only basically clones
Nobody even mentions the zookeeper.
So she is saying she wants more stingrays in her aquarium with her!!
I don't think it's by choice. It's a biological process she didn't ask for, like a lady's mandatory, unenjoyable monthly visit to the Red Sea until menopause.
An animal Developong a Damn Genetic Clone of itself is Itself INCREDIBLE!!!! WTF?!
It is isn’t it
Somewhat common too
Not as incredible as you seem to believe
😂 I think it's far more incredible that you've literally never heard of this happening before!
Did you know there is a lizard species that is all female and propagated solely from parthenogenesis?? This phenomena is so cool!
It happens all the time. Whiptails are an all female lizard species that reproduce that exact same way.
Males as a whole only exist to increase genetic diversity
Quoting Dr ian from Jurassic park, life finds a way.
They named her…. Sharlotte 🦈
At this point, they said it was going to be so long ago that she gave birth and it hasnt happened yet that don't believe them anymore 😂
There are many species where the females do this. Check out the Reptarium in Michigan. They have an anaconda that has survived and doing great. She is probably 7-8 months old now? Her mother has given birth twice now without ever being with a male. It happens more than one realizes but to often, the offspring don't survive or don't live for very long.
That was the first thing that sprang to my mind when I heard about the stingray being preg, with no males stingrays.
Certainly plausible.
What do you mean sharks and rays can’t mate? Where do skates come from then?
This comment is a joke.
When is the due date?
I know they said the pregnancy should take 3 months but I think we're over the 3 month mark so it could be anytime noe
"In other news, a cheetah and a sloth in the Bronx Zoo have produced a hybrid baby that moves at average speed."
I laughed way too hard at this haha
Good one!
Is it called a Slo-cheetah?
The virgin stingray. Who would have thought.🤪
I believe SNL did a skit on Charlotte the stingray
She needs to be renamed MARY! 😂
When she will give birth
She was pregnant either in January or February I believe one of those when I first heard about it ‼️
OR if you speak to a real expert you would know much that like sharks they can hold onto sperm for years and then use it later to become ‘pregnant’. She likely waited so long and upon realizing no males were likely used this sperm she had in reserve.
immaculate conception
Wow this reminds of Jurassic Park, life will always find a way
That is so cool -"parthenogenesis"(?)!!
Or there was a male that was missexed
It's verry easily to sex stingrays as males have verry visable claspers, no way a mistake like that could have been made.
This is just a publicity stump to get people to come to the aquarium. That thing was supposed to give birth a month ago lol.
Boy are you uneducated
...perhaps Luke from accounting?
Steve Irwin is spinning in his grave in light of this revelation. He wouldn't want this. RIP Stevie.
I’d like an update here …
Don’t believe the lies. It’s clear that our next lord and savior will be a sting ray
Wonder if a new species of sharkrays will produce lol
That’s a xenomorph inside of her
Thank God I’m not a genetic clone of my mother…
Just wait until they find out about the lesbian geckos
Kinda brave of him to say this in advance. He could end up looking a fool. Small chance but I'm waiting to see the result
I love the fact he felt he should clarify that it’s the females who do the reproducing😂
There's an undercover Male ray in that tank. 🤭
the hype around this is so silly and weird, not a word about vultures and other animals doing it, but a sting ray living with sharks? omg it must be a shark ray
Bulshit. The male shark next door is guilty for this mess but he won't admit as he doesn't want to pay child support.
Next us women will be able to do this! 😅😅😅
Still need the man for working on the car, cutting the lawn and the good old BBQ.
@@Bob-bm1fk I'm a 66 yr old women. In 1974 I rebuilt the engine in my 66 mustang, don't need a man to cut the lawn ,my sister did it up until her death, and I can cook my own BBQ, thank you very much!

Nope we dont

Hasn’t this happened with birds as well?
Yes, but there aren't that many know cases. It's more common in lizards, snakes and fish.

Not true
It was one of the men workers there got this stray pregnant for sure😮
I saw something like this in a movie
Oh, I thought their mothers named them.
Thats what happens when u swim with the sharks 😂
Yeah we're gonna wait until that baby pops and looks like a shark
Tbf this is such a rar occurrence we are not sure what species could do this - but it has been observed in reptiles, avian, aquatic and insect species. Only ever has been done using mammals in a lab where obviously the egg was fertilized with one of its own cells by a lab tech.
Why don't they teach about this in school?
Wow!!
It was Earl in finance …
awwww I wanted a rayark
This is old news. I was expecting the dna analysis
What did the genetic analysis say? Why waist time speculating?
Life, uhh.... finds a way 💦
I suppose the male stingrays will have to get their passports.
Looks like even the female animals are declaring themselves strong and independent and don’t need a man. Lol

Now I know they're saying all this stuff but what if they mistaked a male as a female coloration whatever or just appeared to have what they thought was female anatomy and it was a male or maybe it was like a hermaphroditic fish I mean hermaphrodites do exist and humans and animals so you never know
That's what happened to that one lady on House 😂 those who know, know
maybe it was the guy who got jiggy w a dolphin?
Click baited again😂😂😂. And his theory is incorrect. They would rub nubs.

Why cant these animals have mates.. if i had a big sanctuary like that id try to ensure they can have companions besides other girls. Any animal thats safely able to.
Take a seat
Pregnancy is very stressful and dangerous when not monitored, and there’s no reason to have a female go through that until the time is right, and the humans can help to make sure she is comfortable enough to be pregnant. it could be the tank they have is a juvenile female tank and she had just come into maturity? I’d need more information. Bottom line, it’s better to control when the females get pregnant, instead of the animal deciding and then you don’t know when the exact due date is cuz you don’t know when the deed took place lol
Because having “mates” adds no benefit to their lives. They get no added social boost from opposite vs same gendered companions. It is much better to keep them separated and only allow monitored interactions for the purpose of species conservation.
Its not uncommon in fish to change sex
