"Why was I sad, though?" The Fly is one of the best tragic films. Seth Brundle was a good man who was doomed by happenstance and one simple mistake. Veronica was a good woman who didn't deserve such horror and suffering. We feel very much for both of them.
"Seth Brundle was a good man who was doomed by happenstance and one simple mistake." Well--- he was a good man, and it was one simple mistake, but there's a lit-tle bit of jealousy (and hubris) in there. Just a bit. (But, naw, it ain't like he's Baron von Frankenstein. :D) To your point, that final shot is one of the all-time-great examples of: now *that's* how you end a horror movie. No big speeches, no reunions or where-are-they-nows or comic relief--- just: woman cries over assorted viscera. End of movie. Fade to black...
@@argentokaos2629 .... Indeed, what else is there to say after such a tragic, horrible end? Veronica has to find a way to forget it all and move on with her life.
this movie is a perfect example of a 'tragedy film' so sad at the end, just a constant down-slope from hope and invention to deformity and monstrous-transformation :( Truly one of the greatest remakes ever filmed!!!
Terrific facts about the movie, as usual. You're pretty singular with that aspect of your reactions; you add so much to the video. In your research, did you see how the end-transformation of Brundle into the out-and-out fly didn't work? A piece of flesh stayed on top of the fly's head, so they had to put it all back together again and reshoot! :)
I saw this movie when I was very little, it was very traumatizing, I loved it, and I cried when he asked her to kill him. It bothered me as an adult to know that Jeff was not even nominated, that is an injustice, to this day I have never seen it again, even as an adult it disturbs me. I also saw the original and I liked it a lot, although it is very different it was also disturbing.
This movie was in heavy rotation on HBO in 1987-88 when I was 11 years old. So, yes, kids did see it. We were scarred for life. And we LOVED it! 2023 has been a great year for 'The Fly' reactions and it never disappoints. Great job!
Here in the UK there was a children's program called "Blue Peter", its was shown at "tea time" ( 5 pm ) after school. They had a whole program dedicated to the special practical effects in the film having the main full Fly puppet in the studio. Chris Walas was interviewed and he explained how it was all done. That was my first introduction to the film and my brother rented it on VHS the following year because I kept going on about it. I was 10 the first time I saw it.... and it was awesome. Us 80's kids where made of the right stuff you know 😁
First 18 certificate movie I ever saw. I was about 10 years old I think. It has lived with me ever since. Even though I was aware it was a "scary" movie, such is the genius of the movie that even at that age, I understood there was a lot more depth to it than just gory SFX. A true masterpiece.
Its genuinely one of the saddest movies I've ever seen. The real life horror is watching someone you love turn into someone you don't recognize because they're subject to Alzheimer's or cancer or any sort of degenerative disease. I feel that's what the movie is an allegory for. "I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it, but now that dream is over" rocks me to the core. I can watch all kinds of movies with no problem but The Fly, Come And See, and Grave Of The Fireflies are some of the few I can maybe watch once a decade, at best. I'm like you in that normally I can see gore and laugh at how crazy or morbidly humorous it is, but The Fly is just SAD.
The Fly was made during the AIDS epidemic of the 80's, so I think it strongly implied an allegory towards that. Although like you said, it could relate to any kind of degenerative disease.
One of the saddest movies you've ever seen? Haven't seen that many movies I guess! lol. Horror fans are so overhyperbolic. It's not a sad movie, it's "the saddes movie ever", lol.
@@TTM9691 Its up there with Come And See and Grave Of The Fireflies, absolutely. I'm not even a horror fan, its specific to this film. Easily Cronenberg's best, and his filmography is amazing.
PS: The two movies that you cite crack me up. One is animation, lmfao. The other you're all excited you saw a foreign film. Wow, you picked a Holocaust movie that has had a resurgence in recent years....I'm real impressed, lol.
Totally agree. That line is one of the saddest I’ve ever heard. The Fly is one of my all time favorites, but it’s so dark and depressing that I find it hard to watch.
I worked in a movie theater in the mid-80s and yeah a lot of people were not ready for it. 😄 If you consider that early-stage Brundlefly acts rather coked-up and that this was made in 1986, the film takes on a whole new meaning. Criminal that Goldblum didn't even get nominated for an Oscar.
The Fly is a tragic love story masquerading as a science fiction horror. There are just 3 characters and at least 90% of the movie takes place in 1 room, so you could argue that is more like a theatrical play rather than a traditional movie. An absolute masterpiece and I believe Cronenburg's finest hour.
It's a nervous smile kinda, 'cause Seth's aware he's far gone enough with his new insect nature, that like he said, he can't trust himself not to harm Veronica. He's holding out hope that his new experiment can fix him, but as a scientist, Seth's being realistic and trying to keep Veronica safe; at least until he discovers her pregnancy, of course.
Yeah. It's the comical line you'd expect a traditional mad scientist to say, but goldblum's delivery makes it much more realistic and down to earth. Maniacal, but hopeful and full of lament.
Your commentary/analysis at the end is always the best! If you want another Cronenberg body horror movie, Videodrome (1983) is a must. It's very layered, with a lot of social commentary on human use of technology, and is definitely a movie that needs a rewatch or two to fully absorb. It'd be perfect for your channel!
Let's not forget The Brood, with Oliver Reed, about the lady who asexually reproduces children that murder when triggered psychically by her rage, or Shivers, with the parasitic STD that causes a sexual zombie epidemic. Also, one of my favorites, Scanners, with the psychic people who can splatter brains with their minds, or with their intense stares.
@@sebastianemond5313 I totally agree about The Brood, I think it's one of Cronenberg's more underappreciated movies. I haven't seen Shivers, but the plot as you describe sounds almost beat for beat the same as his follow up, Rabid. And honestly, I think Scanners is overrated. The very beginning and the very ending are great, but the whole middle of the movie is a lot more paint by number than I expect from this era of Cronenberg.
@RoosterCogburn1008 Have you seen the spin-off movies, Scanner Cop? I find those underrated and possibly more interesting than the main Scanner movies. I still need to see the sequel of Scanner Cop, but I recommend them. Also, while Rabid is more in the traditional zombie vein with its parasite infecting people, the Shivers zombie epidemic is more about the parasite turning people into giant hordes of sex crazed maniacs.

Yes I remember seeing the double feature with my parents on a Saturday night. My mom was so grossed out by The Fly that we didn't stay for Aliens. I was a 14 year old kid at the time and wasn't grossed out or traumatized, but I was fascinated instead. Both movies are on my favorites list and I remember watching both on HBO the next summer. I knew you'd love The Fly! And, I knew you'd get the tragedy aspect. It is a heartbreaking film because we actually care about the characters. My friends and I saw this at the theater as teenagers and it not only blew our minds but it genuinely upset us on an emotional level. When it came to great horror movies that were also great films, the 80s were pretty amazing. Along with amazing practical effects of that period, and theaters having zero problem letting in a bunch of unaccompanied 13-year-old nerds - I feel so fortunate. :)
Be afraid Whimsory, be very afraid... 😉 Cronenberg is some of the best body horror out there. Scanners, Videodrome, and Naked Lunch are all weird in fantastic ways. He also adapts Steven King in The Dead Zone (with Christopher Walken), and made one of the most visceral and strange explorations of human trauma in Crash (1995).
The Fly is one of the best remakes in movie history. The three lead actors, Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis and John Getz really help sell this tragic horror movie.
It's such an interesting cautionary tale. Yes, there are lots of people who hate themselves and want to be someone else (myself included. I know, I know, I shouldn't. It's a constant battle). And towards the beginning of the transformation, it all seems incredibly positive. He's healthier, he's stronger, his shyness is gone... but it all starts going downhill. And it all snowballs so quickly... its very tragic.
The original movie is actually pretty horrifying in it's own 50's way. This version is a genius interpretation. The two are so different, but they are both also the same. Cronenberg definitely loves his body horror and he certainly sunk his teeth into this one. It's like he can't help it. The passion shows.
Please watch Fly 2. The sequel is criminally underrated and has no right to be as good as it is. Great cast, great effects and surprisingly heartfelt story.
(NO SPOILERS) The fly II traumatized me more than the first one as a kid. I haven't seen the movie since(30+years) and i still remember the scene with the bowl of food and what came to eat it.. It broke my heart. 😭
Can't personally choose between The Fly or Alien as my number 1 favourite horror movie, they are both the pinnacle of the genre. 10/10 for me. Good video!
The Fly is easily in my top3 fav horror movies (up there with Alien and the Thing). I love how it combines and changes genre's, starts as sci-fi, moves to super-hero origin story before changing into fullblown bodyhorror and in the end it's a tragic love story whre the prince unwillingly changes into the beast. At the same time the creepy ex-boyfriend (who we all instantly disliked) redeems himself by turning into an unlikely saviour whos heroics did not leave him unscathed. I'm very glad you liked it too!
Your tastes aren't weird, Whimsory. This is a classic of sci-fi body horror. It's also a tragedy. Your reactions to it are spot-on. You're the best, dear!!! ❤️
This movie is amazing. It is weird, and gross, and as you said, sad. But The couple of times I watched it as a teen back in the 80s was enough for me (wait, I was 10 or 11 when I saw it...). It's weird. I can watch The Thing reactions all week long, but I just don't have a stomach for this one anymore. So I skipped most of the watch along part, and am now listening to your breakdown at the end.
Same. I didn't expect it of myself going in; I was just looking forward to another good review. Right after he teleported, and started doing bench-presses in the chair, I suddenly remembered that I've had 30 years to rewatch this and never actually felt a desire to. But the wrap-up is the best part of the video so I just skipped right to it.
Now imagine it’s 1987. Your 9 years old and you parents rented this for movie night. I watched a lot of horror movies back then as a kid, but this is the only one that grossed me out. It was a relief for me to see Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park because the image I had of him for years was as a fly.
Hi Miss Whimsory !!! Gina Davis & Jeff Goldblum are Great Actor / Actress I Bet This one Was Fun for you but Grossed you out in Some parts !!! As always the like button 🔘 has been Illuminated 😁👍👍😎🤗 & I Hope you Had A memorable Halloween 🎃🦇🕸️💀 Yet If you like Unicorns I offer you one of Tom Cruise's First movies called ( Legend) fantasy movie 🎥🍿
I actually laugh a lot at horror movies too, for me I don't usually think of it as real and don't really put myself in the movie. In your words it's just "gnarly" and it makes me laugh and think that practical effect was amazing.
It's a Cronenberg film. Of COURSE it will be sad. Think of DEAD RINGERS, or SPIDER, or CRASH, or NAKED LUNCH, or THE BROOD -- all of them heart-breaking.
David Cronenberg, the master of mindfuck movies e.g. Videodrome, Naked Lunch and eXistenZ. Blurring the lines between reality and fiction, very surrealistic.
If you want to see an even younger Jeff Goldblum, try "Invasion of the Bdoy Snatchers." It's an excellent 70s movie, IMO in good company with "The Exorcist," "Jaws," and "Alien."
Around Christmas, Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson in The Long Kiss Goodnight. Another Halloween movie with great makeup and practical effects, An American Werewolf in London.
After the ape died. Imagine how much clean up you would do. So, his DNA isn't involved in the next teleportation. We could have: Human Ape Fly Mixture.
If you liked this, I highly recommend From Beyond, Castle Freak, and Re-Animator. Pure 80s pulp scifi goopy messes. All three of these movies are based on HP Lovecraft stories.
19:16 - Bless you! 33:27 - Yeah, this one was a bitter pill to swallow. Paul Newman won for "The Color of Money," in which he was mediocre at best. But he was reprising the role of Eddie Telson from "The Hustler," in which people believed he was cheated from winning the Oscar. So it was very much a, "Oh, we're sorry. Here's your trophy for participating" kind of thing. Jeff Goldblum should have at least been nominated. But my personal opinion is that William Hurt should have won that year for "Children of a Lesser God". Wonderful viewing and review, Whimsory. Looking forward to your next one.
Best moment ever... After a long rant... Whispering in all that makeup, Seth says, "I'll hurt you if you stay." Chilling, Dark, Tragic, Sad... The whole setup is basically trying to explain that his humanity is slowly being consumed by the brutal and emotionless insect. To barrow a line from Ash in Alien, "A survivor... Unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions or morality." I think... This might be the final selfless act of Brendle Seth's humanity shining through. He's sending the woman he loves away before he loses himself completely and inevitably hurts/kills her.
Though many rate the sequel poorly, in my opinion _'The Fly II'_ is a *must-see* (oh, and yes, as an 80’s kid, I watched this what others may call "too young" lol)!
I think I unintentionally modeled my life after the pre-teleportation Brundle... When I have a job I wear the same outfit day after day, I'm socially awkward, I don't care for travel... (though I do love driving my car, so not completely)
The fly is really one of the greatest tragic love stories of all time. The had such chemistry as a couple, ending is heartbreaking. It scared me shitless as a kid in the 80s, now it makes me depressed. Don't play God. It a unique masterpiece that could be in the Top 10 for 3 different genres, Sci-Fi, Romance and Horror. Cronenberg knocked it out of the park. Tip for Whimsory, stay away from The Fly 2, it is absolute exploitative garbage.
YEP, this movie is a reminder that smart people can outsmart themselves. GUY built a teleporter and it turned into a gene splicer with a missing line of code.
You're supposed to find the movie sad. Finding it sad isn't weird at all. It's NOT finding it sad that is... well, not getting was the movie was about.
I hope you will accept a modest request from a humble UA-cam follower... Please follow through and watch the sequel to this movie, The Fly 2. Some say that it's not as good as the original, but it's also a very good story and continues the story of the first, placing Eric Stolts in the leading role. Not many reviewers go on to the sequel.
Watching this makes me want to recommend "Double Jeopardy". I'm not sure why, as they have nothing to do with each other. Maybe just actresses that I really enjoyed many years ago.
"Whimsory! You heartless twerp! What are you laughing at?" For a second I thought you were going to use another word that starts with 'tw' to describe yourself...
This is by far my favourite Jeff Goldblum film and both he and Geena Davis were brilliant. Jeff going from this awkward, meek but incredibly likeable man, to insanely mad scientist and finally a literal monster. Ironic that creepy stalker ex Stathis ends up being the hero in the end. Poor Seth- all he wanted was to create a revolutionary form of travel because he suffered from motion sickness.
This is the only movie that made me feel physically sick; when Brundlefly vomits on the guys hand and ankle and you see red streaks in the goop like it's mixing with blood. 🤮

Scientistical is now a word. Accept that, or suffer the catsock! Always entertaining and informative. Thank you. 🙂
16:03 Whimsoryfly...? I rather have you be just Whimsory. :)
16:33 Hahaha! That part.
Your tastes aren't weird, Whimsory. This is a classic of sci-fi body horror. It's also a tragedy. Your reactions to it are spot-on. You're the best, dear!!! ❤️
Tastes like baboon!
Never heard that one before. That’s why I always tune in to WhimsyMimsy
The most unexpected use of Careless Whisper by George Michael of all time!
And the movie has one of the best lines ever, "Be afraid. Be very afraid."
Cronenburg is great. Now try his fantastic Videodrome.
The question now for you is : The next time you see a Fly 🪰, will you swat it or have sympathy for it ??😂😂😂
"...like two limbs earlier." 😂
You need a cat tree in the background...some toys...but great reaction anyway.
Had to pause and say " What would Gordon Ramsey say?" damm near wet mysself! 🙂
At 9:55 when you said sugar and caffeine your cat 🐈 😻 ear twitched..soooo cuuuuute
"Scientistical" Never change, Whimsory. Superb reaction and review, as always.
The Fly II isn't quite as good as this film, but is well worth watching. Warning: It includes bad things happening to a dog.
SPOILER ALERT
Recommend The Fly II - very underrated sequel.. .
Imagine if we got a Spider-Man movie from this director? How nuts would that have been?
Look up earth vs the spider from 2001
Will she throw up? That is the question 🤔. Let's find out shall we 😂🤣
This movie is amazing.
But the wrap-up is the best part of the video so I just skipped right to it.
moral of the story, That weirdo Stethicks saves the day.
"What would Gordon Ramsey say?"
"It's f*cking RAW!!"
😁 👍
Now imagine it’s 1987. Your 9 years old and you parents rented this for movie night. I watched a lot of horror movies back then as a kid, but this is the only one that grossed me out. It was a relief for me to see Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park because the image I had of him for years was as a fly.
I thought I had a bad pixel for a few minutes there.
I love your reactions! I had never watched this movie, only did it because you were reacting.
Be afraid...
Be Very afraid...
Oh yeah🐺Good choice.👍🏼
I have the uncut version on bluray
Jeff and Geena were a married couple for a while IRL. Both charming in the extreme, almost as much as Whimsory herself.
Hi Miss Whimsory !!! Gina Davis & Jeff Goldblum are Great Actor / Actress I Bet This one Was Fun for you but Grossed you out in Some parts !!! As always the like button 🔘 has been Illuminated 😁👍👍😎🤗 & I Hope you Had A memorable Halloween 🎃🦇🕸️💀
Yet If you like Unicorns I offer you one of Tom Cruise's First movies called ( Legend) fantasy movie 🎥🍿
Yes, Jeff Goldblum is playing the piano by himself for real. He is an accomplished jazz piano player.
He's pretty fly for a white guy.
@@_uncreditedOffspring ! 🎶
@@_uncreditedhe is jews though so its not rhyme
I actually laugh a lot at horror movies too, for me I don't usually think of it as real and don't really put myself in the movie. In your words it's just "gnarly" and it makes me laugh and think that practical effect was amazing.
It's a Cronenberg film. Of COURSE it will be sad. Think of DEAD RINGERS, or SPIDER, or CRASH, or NAKED LUNCH, or THE BROOD -- all of them heart-breaking.
Wasn't that better than CGI?? Or....worse....depending on your perspective. I miss this kind of stuff.
Damn, you are right! I never thought of that.
This movie is... OK. But when I REALLY want to see Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis get it on, I watch "Earth Girls Are Easy."
If you find disgust entertaining, you should definitely watch more Cronenberg films.
Come X-Mastime you should watch Geena Davis in "The Long Kiss Goodnight."
Best 'Chick-Flick' (pardon the term) ever!
Whispering in all that makeup, Seth says, "I'll hurt you if you stay."
Chilling, Dark, Tragic, Sad... The whole setup is basically trying to explain that his humanity is slowly being consumed by the brutal and emotionless insect. To barrow a line from Ash in Alien, "A survivor... Unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions or morality."
I think...
**ANAGRAM ALERT**
“Flies find a way.”
- Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Pest
The fly is really one of the greatest tragic love stories of all time. The had such chemistry as a couple, ending is heartbreaking. It scared me shitless as a kid in the 80s, now it makes me depressed. Don't play God.
It a unique masterpiece that could be in the Top 10 for 3 different genres, Sci-Fi, Romance and Horror. Cronenberg knocked it out of the park.
Tip for Whimsory, stay away from The Fly 2, it is absolute exploitative garbage.
"What would Gordon Ramsay tell you? What would he say?" Well, I don't know, but he'd probably drop a lot of f-bombs while doing so 🙂🙃🙂🙃.
Jojo happy halloween, welcome to the universe of David Cronenberg, where the mechanical grotesque lives, we will see you at naked lunch
YEP, this movie is a reminder that smart people can outsmart themselves. GUY built a teleporter and it turned into a gene splicer with a missing line of code.
Geena Davis: We could take a holiday.
You: Let´s teleport there.
That was a great line for you. Made me smile :D
The music is incredible in this movie. Brilliant work by Howard Shore.
Whimsory looks like Cara Delevingne. Very adorkable, she will be at like 500K subs in a year no doubt.
What are you laughing at?"
For a second I thought you were going to use another word that starts with 'tw' to describe yourself...
"I hope no children watched this." Yeah... I was 6 and loved every second of it. 🤣
Pls watch beetlejuice and army of darkness.. they r not scary but funny. I know u will luv them. ❤
Thank you, another great reaction and analysis, elevated this time by a kitty quotient that was through the roof. 10/10
Ma'am. You look like you could play in a Tim Burton's movie.
In a good way, you're cute.
This is the only movie that made me feel physically sick; when Brundlefly vomits on the guys hand and ankle and you see red streaks in the goop like it's mixing with blood. 🤮
Hey Whimsory, what’s your kitty’s name? We just adopted a kitten and he need a name, any suggestions?? 🙂
Once again, the animals pay the price. (But kitty slept til the end.) Yeah, maybe it’s not scary…
Part 2 is cool too🐺👍🏼
Brundles girlfriend has a son😊
Great choice--one of my favorite sci-fi/horror movies!
Would like to hear your initial thoughts before you read about the films. And then after.
