    Hi, I purchased a Synology DS223 along with two 4TB HDDs (thank you) as I'm really only a private user with files on my desktop computer, iPhone and iPad plus multiple security cameras in two separate locations. The cameras are by RING and their annual service fee has risen to A$150 (about US$75), so, with the prospect of an annual fee of A$300 for two subscriptions, A$1,000 for the NAS and HDDs would be paid in 3.3 years. My problem, apart from initial set-up of the system (which I think I've done) is transferring files and setting-up the security app and photos app. 73, Ian

    True story. I built my own NAS server in 2019. All you need is an LSi logic board controller and an open half size to full size pcie slot. Works great too plus there is openNAS software for those who want to get started on making a server. It cost me nothing I got the hard drives and controller card for free. All it took was time and effort. E.G finding the motherboard I wanted to use to build it etc. Great video I like NAS.

      Thank you very much. Another point of discussion maybe something to discuss? Over the last 40 years the data media has change. I build my first computer ZX81 1981 and then we used ordinarey magnetic tape recorder for saving the basic programs files. In the 80-90 you had floppy disc for storing data then the mecahnical hard drives came, then it was CD and DVD and now it is none mecahnical like flash drives and SSD, m.2 . I have search for a more stable storage as the flash drives and SSD has a limitied life span and what is more durabla storage and found that it is the M disc that has a life time guarentee and it is a bluray disc with 100 GB. Problem today is that new computer does not have bluray included in the hardware. You need to use them as external drives. Open Question will my family digital photos and videos still be available in the future in 10-50 years from now and what digital media will still be available then?
      Best regards Per-Ove

    I'm a little fuzzy on the backup methods- would you use the 'make disk image' function of Windows 10? Or, does this do file backup only? And, would you need to buy a hard drive to put into the NAS to image the drive installed on the laptop/computer? Or, just use the NAS as an external file storage drive? I don't do major backups or replace hard drive often at all, so I may be asking the question in the wrong terms, sorry.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  3 місяці тому

      I would probably create the Windows image, store them on your NAS. The image is basically a snapshot of your computer OS, installed programs, personal files, everything - just stored in one large image file. Yes, you need a hard drive for the NAS, preferably 2 for redundancy, if you went that route. Some NAS servers come with drives, some are diskless. Hope that explains it for you 👍

    I've had so many flash drives go through washer and dryer in my jeans. They still work and are cleaner 😁 I'm an IT professional (software engineer / electronic engineer). I would never trust a backup being on flash drive or external drive. I have a NAS drive in my home office... still don't trust that. So have a VPS (virtual private server) in the cloud which the NAS backs up to. You need many points of redundancy. 🙂

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

      Your email access is dependent on internet access, not cloud storage. I assume you're using a web based service like Gmail? Or are you using a paid mail service somewhere? Can't answer your question without more info. But I can say the NAS gives you file access anywhere, across any device, similar to the way you can access your mail across any device. You'd basically be replacing Onedrive for example with your own cloud storage

    It's important that If you have a sizable bunch of files on your PC which you want to store on the Synology, you should never just upload them over the network, since this will take all day to do.
    Rather, copy the files onto a jump drive, then plug this into the synology console, then log onto the Synology web page and use File Station to copy the files from the jump drive onto the Synology Hard Disk configuration.
    Also, if you only use the Synology as a backup for your (say, media files) it's not obvious whether you should just turn on the Synology when you are transferring files or whether it's safe to leave the Synology on all the time and allow it to control the rate at which its hard disks are spinning or not.

    Hi, great video. However, I have a question that is quite important to me: I read that often times Synology sells NAS systems containing HDDs or SSDs that are not up to par or not compatible with a NAS process. Or, generally of low quality. Can you provide an answer, or create a video where you clarify/explain this aspect, please. Particularly what disk brands are the best for this and basically what to purchase in terms of disks, in order to not defeat the purpose of this system with poor quality or uncompatible disks. I understand there is redundancy thru RAID but I think that should be seen as an exception not as a rule in case of disk crash. Thank you.

    What HDD or SDD do you recommend? It was a chore for me to research and find out that they come with 0 storage and I would need to purchase the NAS Disk Drives separately. What is the max storage (right now) per bay? You mentioned having one bay mirror the other for redundancy... that would cut storage in half but obviously make it much more secure?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  Місяць тому +1

      I can't recommend a drive yet until I know your (rough) needs. As an example, I have maybe 2 terabytes of client data, and maybe another total 3/4 terabytes of personal data (UA-cam videos, music and movies). I went with 2 8TB drives (and yes, mirroring effectively makes it 1 8TB drive, but my data is safe against drive failure. I have seen Synology NAS drives up to 20TB per drive bay, but since I have two remaining drive bays open, I opted for the smaller 8TB. If you can give me a better idea of your backup needs, I'd be happy to recommend some good drives. Also please note that Synology does make NAS servers with drives included for convenience. If you click on the link in the description, you can also browse through some of Synology's other products, included "loaded" NAS servers. If you prefer to get your own drives, go "diskless". Just so there's no confusion at purchase time 👍

    • @Mr.DadJokeADay

      @@AskYourComputerGuy I’ve filled up almost 2 terabytes so far and I’ll only be adding more. I have another UA-cam channel where I do longer tutorials and that burns up the memory. Hours of 4k videos… I’d probably get by with two mirroring 8TB drives for a few years. I may even just go for the synology beestation to get me by for a while till I get more money.
      I’m almost due to upgrade my iCloud to the 6TB plan now. At 29.99 it would take less than a year’s time for the beestation to pay for itself.

    Because this is always connected to your computer, I would assume it is susceptible to ransomware? Even though my OneDrive is susceptible to ransomware because it’s constantly being backed up once a file changes, it does save iterations by date, which isn’t accessible by ransomware.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  3 місяці тому

      I don't believe it is, because it's not mapped to your computer, like a flash drive or portable drive is. I'm not 100% on that, but theoretically the only way you can infect the NAS is if you upload an infected file, and even then it would probably have to be executed like in Windows. I welcome any corrections to that statement, I'm just not 100% that I'm correct there. It's not connecting to your computer, it's connecting to your network.

  • @retsvus

    There's one giant problem with Synology. You start out with one, then you need a second one and then a third....I am now on the fifth.
    The Synology doesn't come with NAS hard disks. When you buy enough big red NAS hard disks, be sure to install each on your PC first and then run the drive company's full (not quick!) test on each drive. This can take a week to go thru all large drives, but the FULL test will show any problems you might get down the road.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  3 місяці тому

      Agreed, with one exception - Synology does include disks in some of their setups, but not all. And I personally think, if you anticipate future needs, buy drives up front that are much bigger than you'd ever think you'd need, because you're probably wrong. Especially if you have a rapidly growing business. But good tips and info for sure, thanks! 👍

    One should always encrypt your data stored on the cloud. You can do it on the fly and keep everything private. Cloud storage is the 3rd tier of off-site storage to protect you against fire and theft/natural disasters. You must have vital data to be triple redundant. Your own NAS is not providing that off-site storage backup.

      Furthermore, yeah , it's off topic, but a necessary rant ...
      I've tried real hard not to use online programs, eg MYOB, which makes you login, update, double security checks, pay annually, etc, just to check and adjust your OWN business accounts. You can't even buy a standalone desktop version anymore and they've disabled all legacy versions. But ...
      ... Recently I closed down my business to retire. Told my bookkeeper, my accountant and the MYOB head office to completely delete me from their systems. "Can't do that" they all said. "It's the law".Great, so now all my past financial affairs are up in the cloud for 7+ years. We are OWNED.

    IDrive cloud encrypts a customer's data going on to it's servers. So only you, the user, know the contents of your data going on IDrive's servers, using a software pass key. The main advantage to IDrive is offsite storage. If your NAS and computer are destroyed by a catastrophe (e.g. fire, tornado, hurricane, etc.) you would still have your precious data.

If you use it, I'd recommend going into settings and do a reset back to original settings. Could be a plugin, extension or something else similar that is causing the temp file issue

      I plan on using two of the DS923+. One will be the main server in the house, installed in my rack. The second one will be installed about 50 feet away from the house in the back yard shed, in a climate controlled housing, and will be connected using Synology's Snapshot Replication technology through a buried Ethernet connection. This will give me off-site protection while still being completely under my control. Since we don't have earthquakes in MN (at least not strong enough to cause any damage), about the only thing I would have to worry about is a localized lightning strike.

    And, is there an alternative to Synology that does not have any ties to the CCP? Or, is there at least another open source OS that does the same as the Synology OS, which can be installed on this box and do the same things?

    I can not believe you taliking about raid as a backup , it's a mirror in mode, the other modes 0 and 5 are just dangerous , when you say this out loud in the IT world , you're done , i have a 4 bay QNAP nas and 2 other QNAP nasses that act as backup servers, just buy a external drive and make a mirror from time to time and store it way, in the case of a power problem you can have damage to alle the devices , newer ever combine backup drive in the same device it's just bad.

      That's true. You could still have risks with off-site storage too (natural disasters, Hacks, sabotage, etc). There's inherent risks with any backup method. Only truly safe method is no backup, I suppose 👍
