  • Dr. Ferlic explains why you never see anyone over 70 in a walking boot. Walking boots significantly limit elderly patient's mobility, decrease quality of life, and can lead to catastrophic outcomes.

I’ve had to wear a walking boot for 12 months awaiting foot surgery. You might add: those boots greatly increase one’s fall risk because (1) they dig into carpet and don’t allow a simple pivot, causing loss of balance; and (2) the wearer has no sensation of simple obstacles such as a slightly raised curb. I’ve had two or three serious falls due to the boot that might hospitalize or kill a senior.

Such a great idea! I am at this point wearing a walking boot for halux rigidus fusion, and it has been a challenge despite being a fit 51 year old. Thanks for this innovation.

I am 75 and have half leg walking boot following plano valgus deformity correction. It is cumbersome and I have to wear a boot with a little heel on the other foot to balance but I managed with elbow crutches for balance. Now weaning off it and doing OK.

Sprained my ankle awhile ago. Your description of the height of the boot throwing off everything else is right. Looks like a good brace! Oh, I am 70.

Claw toes surgery. Given shorter walking boot. It is cumbersome to put on / off, use. I purchased a device that goes over my other shoe so I dont limp & hips even. I also use one crutch for stability.

Just under the wire, I guess. 67-year old who had to wear a WB for 6 weeks after a hard cast for 4, post foot surgery. I was determined the scenario described here would NOT happen to me, so I just shifted from my usual running program to upper body resistance training. Am now out of the boot and walking normally. Plus I now have visible abs and a bigger chest.

Thank you Geezus!! I discarded the one this "Podiatrist" "fit" me for the very next day. How in the Hell can one wear this heavy thing that makes your lumbar or hips hurt? I just had some tendonitis! I am a healthy, exercising, fit 70 guy and I knew, that this contraption would screw me!

Not true. I'm 71 and have been in a walking boot for 4 weeks. No problems with balance. It's been such a help.

72 and in boot and Even up for 8 weeks post FX. It’s no fun and I’ll get out of it as soon as cleared and I can find a shoe that will fit over persistent swelling . But I’m agile and my balance is OK. It’s a pain but I don’t think age has anything to do with it.

I agree. I'm 71 and have been in a walking boot for 4 weeks now, with 2 more weeks to go. I also have an EvenUp for the other shoe. I've had no problems with the boot at all.

@@TayCoBraceXAB I contacted tayco...as I was issued a large boot for a tibia/fibula fracture and I am a smaller woman and the boot did NOT fit well. It requires a script and my surgeon is in LOVE with those ortho boots and didn't see the need for anything different, ugh. It was throwing me off completely. PT was making me do exercises for coping with what the boot did. Like I needed additional stuff on top of the break? That makes NO sense, as the awkward boot that was heavy and throwing my balance off completely. I thought that was ASININE. I am a senior though not 70's, first bone break ever, but was highly mobile before. Walked miles everyday and did rebounding (lil tramp). It was illogical to me to do exercises to help me USE the boot that was throwing off everything. 6 wks in and finally able to see the OH so busy surgeon for post op xrays. He couldn't believe I was healing as I was, told me I could be weight bearing now. What he and PT didn't know, was I was listening to my body, being EVER mindful of what it said. I did WAY different exercises, basically following a more Eastern Medicine approach, not for wearing a boot, but for strengthening my leg and balance. The boot HURT as it was TOO stinking heavy and pulled on the staples, then pulled on the muscles having to keep it elevated off the floor using a walker. No sense in that. I used the walker, but also had a wheelchair. PT immediately got me a cane, when surgeon said ok, healing faster than we thought, now weight bearing. They were surprised that I didn't have more atrophy. I contend the boot HINDERS healing for some, and then they have to relearn to use their limbs, prolonging the process. The whole imbalance thing, or having to get a shoe heightener is just ADDING more risk to stuff. I wish I could have tried the tayco approach. They were great by the way in emailing quick. I wish Drs who see you for MAYBE 15 mins, wouldn't take the one size fits all, and this is the only equation we endorse approach. I wish they would have CARED that what they gave me obviously WASN'T fitted at all to my situation. I got frustrated that everyone said my surgical team was SO great. I believe they did good with surgery, putting in the rod. but Post OP care, they failed me miserably. PT can only follow their input, disregarding MY personal journey.

I never use anything but normal trainers after my pot came off. I was given a boot, but it’s uncomfortable and I can walk within a few days after pot came off. I’m 72, but walk almost normally after 2 weeks. I just need to work on distance walking, but never expected to do so well without any aids at all.

I fractured my heel (calcaneus) a month ago and have a boot. Not walking in it yet as it's another 3 or 4 weeks until I can put weight on it. But I will be using it then for walking for another 6 - 8 weeks.
    By the way, I'm 72.

Wish my orthopedic surgeon could see this…He prescribed one for me and I simply could not use it. Way too heavy and couldn’t get up off the couch or toilet with it on. Of course they can’t/won’t take it back!! i m 74 and have an ankle that is simply worn out…trying to find remedies that don’t involve surgery.

I am in my last forties and the heavy walking boot has torn my body apart. I don’t have to be over seventy years old to know that’s not right for me. I complained to my doctor about the pains and asked her if there are other options available but she insisted on the heavy boots. I wonder why the torture when this light weight boot should be an option.

It looks like a walking boot without the big thick sole. So why does it cost $200 when the big thick soled black boot costs so much less? Im baffled. Oh, wait another medical person making extra in retirement? Sheesh.

Thank you for your comment! We've seen many patients suffer due to walking boots, not only due to the possibility of slipping and falling, but also from secondary injuries caused by loss of muscle condition and uneven walking pattern. Our hope is to help people get back to normal daily activities with fewer disruptions so they can enjoy the things they love!

We always recommend checking with physicians in these instances, and hope that through growing awareness, the TayCo Brace can improve quality of life and healing for millions. It is key during the healing process for individuals to speak with their physicians about how to best return to active motion.

Show clinical proof that this thing works/actually helps, and is durable! If not, this is complete nonsense. No, your website is not proof. I know for a fact that the small strap going under the shoe will be eaten away in no time if not restricted to walking on carpet. Concrete will demolish it!
