They were little rascals, but smart and oh so cute. I take my hat off to daddy bird for roping in his three fluffy chicks to try knowing their cuteness would distract me while he stole my porridge from under my nose. Hilarious.
New Zealand is gorgeous! Thank you for taking us with you to these lovely locations. My husband and I also spend a lot of time outdoors exploring. We thoroughly enjoy watching your channel when we are chilling indoors. We are both subscribed via our individual accounts. We look forward to the next adventure Cathy! Cheers from the U.S.!
What a wonderful adventure, some of the scenery you capture through a lens is just stunning. The path out right at end was like a garden, the clarity of the water in the lake and the weka family visit, what a way to build memories and rejuvenate, a very special place. Thanks once again.
😅 oh that is so cute. Watch out for my Kea though, it’s the naughty kid you don’t want your parrot falling in love with. Their favourite thing if they can is to pull shiny things and rubber seals off cars at ski fields 🫣
Another good adventure with your tarp. Amazing spot for a camp. Arthurs Pass area seems to be the great spots for camping and walking trails. See you on the next one. 🏕🏕
I who feel tired of watching many luxurious od camping hv subscribed as urs seems 2b.kind of. a true bushcraft wz minimum artificial devices !! Cheers from Korea!!
Most of my videos are wild camps without a lot of gear as I walk a long way and have to carry it all. From time to time I do a comfortable trip alongside my car in a larger tent, just to reward myself and have a quiet, low stress camp without all the physical effort. I hope you will enjoy the channel. Thank you.
That weka made me laugh so hard! I love cheeky animals. Once when I was camping I had to retrieve a towel from a very cheeky squirrel who came in and stole it for his nest. He was trying to drag it up a tree and was very angry because it got stuck on a branch! And he stole an unwrapped package of ramen and disappeared with it. I tried to get it back but he was much faster than me!
Another new subscriber from the UK. I’m lucky enough to have spent a number of months in NZ and would love to go back. Thanks Cathy for reminding me of what NZ has to offer.
Hi Dave. Oh that is great. I am sure you will remember a lot of this scenery, and perhaps even places you visited. Thanks for subscribing. I hope you enjoy the channel.
Great walk up the track and into the mist - loved the cheeky weka family! When I lived in Golden Bay many years ago a cheeky local weka fancied our dogs' Tux dog biscuits, knew where we kept the sack on the verandah, and would regularly help itself to them!
Oh they are so sneaky! Between them and the Kea you don't get a moments down time when they turn up. Ha ha, Tux, that would have kept those Weka's 'full of life'.
What a brilliant way to start 2025 with that amazing location Cathy. Would have been quite the soul rejunvenator. The weka are so bold and cheeky - gosh you would have to be on your toes with them around. Glad you went out and shared the journey. Thanks
That's good to hear. It is so worth it. I would say though, definitely give yourself time to explore. The previous time I went up there my husband and I camped in the hut and didn't even know about the tarns 5-10min up the hill. Well worth taking your cooker up there to make dinner on a still evening, or go for a paddle.
Hi Cathy, I'm a new subscriber. I'm watching all your past videos and loving them. This year I am taking up backpacking again, after a 35 yr leave of absence!! Wish me luck! I have collected most of my gear over the last few months, taking detailed notes from your posts... and Tony's. 😉 Thank you!
Wow Cathy - thanks for editing and getting this video out so quickly! You're getting good at this stuff! LOL. Lovely views, AND cheeky feathered friends. I hope you had a lovely Christmas and here's to a great start to 2025! 🎇🎇🎇
@adventureot I kept hoping the game would be mercifully short. Your videos are more entertaining than watching the Steelers get crushed in every facet of the game. It was brutally bad. Good thing I had you qued up n ready to go. Thanks for another good 1. Loved your pesky birds and the leaves with the water in em.
Ouch 😣 oh no. At least you were out there having fun though hey! I hope it was a good run down the mountain before your fall. I’m hoping for an uncomplicated recovery for you. The body is amazing.
I love the camp. It looks amazing. You were so funny running after the bird. You are in the middle of summer and I’m in 30cm of snow and -15 degree. lol. Louise Canada
brrr, that is a bit chilly. It is warm here but not hot. So far our summer has been unseasonably cool. Still time for a real summer to kick in. Still, it's tough hiking in 30degrees C so I am not really complaining.
Nice video Cathy! I always look forward to watching them. By your next one, you will have over 12,000 subscribers!! Well done, you deserve it. Here’s to a great 2025 to you and your channel!! Oh, and to Indi too! Take care!!
Thanks for this Kathy. I want that tarp set up with the poles brilliant. You know I do find your breakfasts of porridge uninspiring but I laughed for 1 minute straight when you were chasing that bird barefoot. Was hilarious. Made porridge much more interesting. 😜
Funny hey. It took me a while to remember I was barefoot. Lucky the ground was soft and kind underfoot. Yea me too, I went up there in the sun because I wanted a sunny camp with lovely views and sun set so I was a bit disappointed, but the morning was lovely and lifted my spirits for sure!
Oh Kathy I really needed this today. I'm not even joking. Your videos always give me a sense of peace. New Zealand is so beautiful! I had to laugh when the weka took off running with your bag of porridge! Those little birds are so fast. And sneaky 😂 I'm with you, they are so cute! I was kind of worried for you with he clouds surrounding you. But you can always make the best out of any situation! ❤
Thanks for letting me know how much peace you got from the video. That means everything! I honestly just want to share the calm, peaceful perspective that being in the outdoors gives me on life. I also got a bit worried for myself in the clouds. I was feeling super confident and full of bold ideas until I suddenly couldn't tell up from down, then it was not so fun.
Wonderful. I explored tarp and bivy backpacking last year. It's fun to think of what pitch to use depending on the location or conditions. Really been enjoying your videos the past year. Thanks for sharing 👍
Great UL camp Cathy. I'm trying to go UL but can't do without a tent, so just working towards getting one of those ultralight ones. Those Weka's are so cute yet so naughty at the same time 😂😂
Thanks 🙂. There are more and more good quality UL tents out there now so I think it’s quite doable to still carry a tent and have a nice light pack. I’m even curious as to whether my bivy and tarp combo was lighter or heavier than my Durston tent 🧐
Hey irrepressable girl ... thanks for sharing, became concerned at white out conditions, so glad you made the right decision to turn back. Still a good hike tho (for me, that is ... haha) I know from your big smile you enjoyed it too! .... take care, begood, gb,napier
You are so right Graeme, I genuinely love it all. Nothing like a good challenge to get you feeling alive hey. I did start to feel very alone though when I was in the white out. There is so much safety is seeing what is around you, like you can predict your fate, lol. In the whiteout I started feeling a little bit spooked. Like one of those movie characters you are calling out to because you know there is impending doom... "go back".
Good evening. I believe the Weka just wanted some snuggles and pets. However, I would not hold him to close, his beak does not look compatable with earlobes and nose tips. Thank you for sharing your adventure and especially that wonderful bird (and answering the question my mind asked, "The Weka looks a lot luke a Kiwi, except I think Kiwis beaks are different."). Have a great day. Stay safe and have fun.
Oh, so true, I did not want to mess with that beak. Those fluffy babies were so tempting to cuddle though. What I thought was funny was the way he came to investigate then must have gone home and said "Mildred, children, come quickly, there is a lovely lady camping without one of those zip up house things that those others hide their food away in."
That is such a beautiful area you camped at. When the wekas showed up, it reminded me of another UA-camr named Abel of Abel and Victoria from NZ. He's always battling wekas! That one that took the porridge bag was a cheeky little bugger!
Another great video! A bit scary when it was so foggy that you lost your way, but you were smart to backtrack to where you could safely camp. Looks like a challenging but beautiful hike! I can see the value in bringing dehydrated meals on an ultralight camp like this. Have you ever tried making your own? I've seen other youtubers make things like dehydrated spaghetti, chili, beans and rice dishes, in a household food dehydrator. Might be tastier, and most likely less expensive!
Oh yes I would love to do that. I have thought about it but it is the financial outlay to get the dehydrator. Might still be worth keeping in mind though.
I thought so too. I have see one or two on trips but never had them visiting before. I think because this spot is near a hut they may be used to people.
Me ha encantado tu contenido saludos desde Puerto Rico jajaja que cómico un pájaro ladrón no puedes confiarte los ladrones están donde quiera pero me hizo reír como a ti.
What a cool ambience up in the cloud by the lake with the lamps! A shame you didn't get to the main tarns. I was up there a month or so ago and you would have been only about 10 minutes away. But good on you for playing it safe. Always another excuse for a return trip right?
Yes too right. It wasn’t as tough a walk as I thought it might be (many years ago I did it after a big feed of f&c in Greymouth, which turned out to not be a great idea 😂 and that made it feel like a tough climb when really it’s fine). I’ll be back 👍
DOC website says 3hrs to the hut and then blogs from other people estimate 1.5hours from there to the Kelly Tarns. I rounded it up to 5hrs because I usually take a bit longer with my back and forward walking to film myself (lol). In reality it look me less time than expected, but then I had to walk back to the saddle. 4hrs 45min walk time in the end. Done on a good day with a bit of pace on I think you could get to the Kelly Tarns in 3.5hrs + any stops.
What a nice adventure out.I would say you maybe needed a little bigger tarp but you seemed content enough with that tarp 😊Thankyou for showing us the natural beauty of Newzealand 👍I am interested in becoming a member but i watch yt on my tv. I joined Able’s channel because he put a link to it.I am not sure if you can do the same but that’s what he has done 👍👍
Thanks for the tip Phil. I have gone ahead and done that. Actually I agree, I need a bigger tarp. I got that one as a (cheaper, ha ha) and lighter alternative to my brown DD Hammocks one, and then my bigger DD one ripped, leaving me with only one stealthy tarp, this small one. The other is orange and would have been a bit harsh for a camp like this I think.
G'day Cathy, You think you've got problems. My sister had a snag pinched out of her hand by a Kookaburra at a picnic last year. had the same thing done by a possum on my back deck once as well, though you guys might know too much already about that ! 😉🤣 Garry
You need to have that snag secured in a piece of cheap white sandwich bread, with some onions, sauce and mustard, not waving it around for the Kookaburras Garry. That is where things go wrong.
Hello in Korea. Unfortunately there are no fish in this little lake. One day soon I would like to try a camp where I do some fishing. I will have to get a fishing license, but it would be fun. I recommend my little Flextail pump. I also worried about the battery running flat, but because I have lots of things that need charging (my camera and lights and power bank) I am used to plugging it in the night before I go. Thank you for watching my video.
@adventureot I just ordered a white flextail pump like yours. It will arrive at me the day after tomorrow. I plan to go camping in the winter with it. Thank you for your advice.
I think daddy weka was the distraction while the rest of the family took the rest of your goods. Lol People must feed those because They sure don't seem afraid.
Oh, it's so strange to see someone camping so close to a water source! Here in the States, land agencies usually have 100 foot (maybe 33 m?) setback requirements.
Oh wow, that is interesting. Definitely don't have that here. I imagine in highly frequented places that would make a lot of sense for protecting the banks and reducing polution. Or are there other reasons for that requirement that I have not thought of? I am always curious about camping laws/restrictions in other countries.
Bring a map and compass next time, you never know when your GPS goes out. You can always use dead reckoning to find your way, you should have a pace count too. Know how many paces for 100 meters. We did ours in the army over a trail on uneven terrain about 1,000 meters or so, marked every 100 meters, and we got an average count with every other foot hitting the ground, like counting on your left as you walk. We would use pebbles or something to put from one hand or pocket to the other every 100 meters. We also used pace count beads, on a cord. Of nine and four. In two parts of the court, Separated by knots. Every hundred meters you move a bead on the cord. When you move nine of the beads you have gone 900 meters. After the last 100 meters when reaching 1,000 meters, you reset the nine beads, and move one of the four beads. The first of the four equals 1,000 meters, using a map with a protractor, mark where you’re at and where you want to go, draw a line to it, get the azimuth and convert to magnetic, note the distance. Use the compass and go. I navigated through a sand storm during the Persian Gulf War. You can do it in a cloud of fog.
These are waterproof breathable gaiters to protect my calves from scrapes and knocks, grass seeds and things getting into my socks, and water tracking down my legs and into my boots. These are Outdoor Research brand and I got these from Bivouac Outdoors.
Brrr, I can only imagine. It was so toasty warm walking up that mountain. Even the mist and rain wasn't too bad. Cold, but not your winter cold. Hopefully your winter is kind to you.
Famous last words "I have pretty good sense" You right it's true.Is that the "brain fog" they were talking about there surrounding you ? Love your videos no pretenses,,just what in and the best coping skills to use.
Thank you 😊. Is it responsible? Well I guess each situation is different and depends on the person’s knowledge, skill, experience, preparation, safety gear carried, medical experience, location for support or evacuation if needed, proximity to track, frequency of other hikers passing who could support in the event of injury etc, whether predators are present, etc. it’s a risk vs benefit analysis. In my situation and on this occasion, yes definitely very responsible to be out alone, and fantastically good for my sense of self agency 👍☺️
Both lights are not primarily lanterns but double as lights. One is the Flextail Tiny Pump (air mat pump) and the other the Flextail Tiny Repel bug repeller. I love that they both have two uses. It makes me feel that their weight in my pack is justified.
Your 'friend' has noticed how meaty they look (ha ha), but tell your 'friend' they are a protected native bird species so they are not allowed to be eaten.
Oh my gosh, I hate to admit it, lol, yes. This was my poor attempt that did not go to plan. I learnt that freezing wind and driving sleet is not the best time to be trying out a new tarp configuration. ua-cam.com/video/XLBoRXfRUNY/v-deo.html
Good question. I took one for using on the descent to reduce jarring to my knees (and I hold on to branches or stabilise on the ground with my other free hand). I took the second one so I would have two ‘poles’ to erect the tarp because I knew I would be above the bush line and there would be no trees to tie off to or branches to make in to poles. I didn’t use either on the way up because it was too steep in parts and I needed my hands free for pulling up on tree roots or branches and stabilising off the ground.
Canada looks to be out of this world spectacular. I really hope to travel around and explore it one day. However…. I am sure NZ can still be a great spot, even if there are other great spots in this world 😉 I grew up in Africa. NZ isn’t a patch on Africa for vast intense dramatic beauty, but it’s incredible in its own right way 😊
Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy the video. If you are interested in becoming a channel membership here is a link ua-cam.com/channels/TiojeviGtjwOjbY2N4kyUA.htmljoin. Thanks, Cathy

Thank you. It was the perfect spot to take in the amazing scenery.
Thanks!
You are so welcome Louise. Thank you again for your ongoing support!!
The little thieves were so clever, can't hold it against them. Absolutely stunning views and friends. Amazing pitch for camp.
They were little rascals, but smart and oh so cute. I take my hat off to daddy bird for roping in his three fluffy chicks to try knowing their cuteness would distract me while he stole my porridge from under my nose. Hilarious.
That looks eery cool afterall 😃
Eerie indeed! I was not a fan of the whiteout, but loved my camping spot. Thanks
Such a nice video to watch. The sound of rain was very peaceful.
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed that part. I loved listening to it fall on the tarp as I was going to sleep.
What a wonderful time in the great outdoor 😊😊😊
Thank you. I agree entirely.
Woohoo, 12,000 subs!!! Great job!! You are on a well deserved roll!!
Thanks John 🥳

Love your videos. I am very pleased to have ran across your channel along with Tony and Abel’s. You do a great job, and thank you for taking us along.
Awhh thanks so much!
Great Video Cathy. Super location for a tarp and bivy. Really atmospheric.
It worked out well did n’t it. I enjoyed the spot.
You have some amazing foliage, animals ,my parrot fell in love with "your"parrot your photos are most naturally beautiful.
I love it there. It has the raw feeling of the mountains, with breathtaking scenery. It is mostly uphill to get anywhere, but so worth it.

32:25 So cute!! I want one! I suppose being in a place with no or low predators makes them friendly / bold.
Yes that is right. Where else can a bird be flightless and get away with it?
Another new subscriber from the UK. I’m lucky enough to have spent a number of months in NZ and would love to go back. Thanks Cathy for reminding me of what NZ has to offer.

Really enjoyed it thanks!
I am glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
❤ totally immersed in nature, and all of its chicanery.
So lovely. Puts everything else in my life into perspective.
Lovely video. I'm watching in my bed from NYC.
Rainy and windy camping videos are always best watched from a cozy spot.
What a brilliant way to start 2025 with that amazing location Cathy. Would have been quite the soul rejunvenator. The weka are so bold and cheeky - gosh you would have to be on your toes with them around. Glad you went out and shared the journey. Thanks
It was a gorgeous location. It wasn't the one I had planned, but it was absolutely spectacular none the less.
Great trip once again. Thank you for adding the map, it's great to see where you are heading etc. Carroll hut is on my bagging list.

Hi Tina. It was a fun edit. So much happened on this trip that I had not anticipated. It make it nice to relive it. I had a lovely Christmas. Thanks.
Yayyyyyyyyyyy, BUT, I'll watch it after the Steelers game. Thx Cathy. Looking forward to the end of the game.
Good on you. There is time for both. Enjoy.

He he he, yes quite a bit of fun and silliness for an otherwise sensible breakfast moment.
Seeing you chase after the weka in bare feet was hilarious. Glad to see the weather cleared for you eventually.

Simple but effective tarp set up. Loving the videos. Just subscribed from a fellow UA-camr in the UK.😉👍
Thanks Phil. It did the job. A bit on the small side once the rain started to fall, but it’s all part of the fun of it isn’t it?!
Sure is, it all dries out in the end. Have a great week 👍

That is such a beautiful area you camped at. When the wekas showed up, it reminded me of another UA-camr named Abel of Abel and Victoria from NZ. He's always battling wekas! That one that took the porridge bag was a cheeky little bugger!
Hi Joyce. I am sure Abel sent it to harass me. There was a cheeky reference to him at the 33:50 mark.
So different from New England (USA). God sure knows how to make this planet awesome!
You got that right! Such amazing diversity
Food is funny looking sometimes. Things that are absolutely delicious. May look like something that is better suited for your dogs dish. lol 😂
So true 😆
You could have a Kia Carnival .. lol. Great spot to camp. Bushyboy Oz.
😂 nice dad joke there Bushyboy Oz
Haha..."always bring chocolate, always" 😂
Oh yes, you know it. Am I speaking to the converted Lynn? Ha ha.
That was so funny i thought only abel and Victoria get them😂😂
I thought so too.
Ha ha, yes, just when I say New Zealand is safe, along comes a feathered thief.
Great spot and those Weka are so funny. They taunt Abel in every video he does..
They really do. Now that I know what a nuisance they can be I feel for him. You have to have eyes in the back of your head or you will lose your food.
I’ll be back 👍
Καλημέρα σας από την Ελλάδα 🇬🇷
Good morning and thank you for stopping by to say hello.
Great video!,that little Kea looked so funny running of with his little purchase lol, amazing place as well, was that a 5 hour walk in?
DOC website says 3hrs to the hut and then blogs from other people estimate 1.5hours from there to the Kelly Tarns. I rounded it up to 5hrs because I usually take a bit longer with my back and forward walking to film myself (lol). In reality it look me less time than expected, but then I had to walk back to the saddle. 4hrs 45min walk time in the end. Done on a good day with a bit of pace on I think you could get to the Kelly Tarns in 3.5hrs + any stops.
Now Watching!
I hope you enjoyed watching.
Cathy, Great video thank you. Where’s your dog?
Thanks so much. Indi is at home with the family. This spot is in a National Park so she is not permitted here.
@@adventureotgreat idea 👍I have seen some youtubers make a plough point with their tarp and the look pretty good 👍
G'day Cathy, You think you've got problems. My sister had a snag pinched out of her hand by a Kookaburra at a picnic last year.
had the same thing done by a possum on my back deck once as well, though you guys might know too much already about that ! 😉🤣
Garry
You need to have that snag secured in a piece of cheap white sandwich bread, with some onions, sauce and mustard, not waving it around for the Kookaburras Garry. That is where things go wrong.
@@adventureot 🤣🤣🤣
Great video as always, thanks for sharing! Random question: are there any venomous snakes you have to worry about in New Zealand?
Thank you 🙂 no, no snakes at all. Thank goodness. Plenty across the ‘ditch’ in Australia
Oh yes, probably. I would say they have a game plan worked out for sure 😂
Hallo Cathy herrlich wie du dem Weka hinterher jagst
I’m sure it was teasing me Sabine 😂 just to make me run.
🙂
Hi Gregory. Thanks.
What is the leg cover and where do you get them?
These are waterproof breathable gaiters to protect my calves from scrapes and knocks, grass seeds and things getting into my socks, and water tracking down my legs and into my boots. These are Outdoor Research brand and I got these from Bivouac Outdoors.
Snowing here and super cold 😢
Brrr, I can only imagine. It was so toasty warm walking up that mountain. Even the mist and rain wasn't too bad. Cold, but not your winter cold. Hopefully your winter is kind to you.
it seems alien will come out somewhere......
😂 yes that is how I felt too
Famous last words "I have pretty good sense"
You right it's true.Is that the "brain fog" they were talking about there surrounding you ? Love your videos no pretenses,,just what in and the best coping skills to use.
😂 yes, lady with “good sense of awareness” last seen heading off a bluff 😬
Mooie beelden, is het wel verantwoord om zo alleen op pad te gaan ?
Thank you 😊. Is it responsible? Well I guess each situation is different and depends on the person’s knowledge, skill, experience, preparation, safety gear carried, medical experience, location for support or evacuation if needed, proximity to track, frequency of other hikers passing who could support in the event of injury etc, whether predators are present, etc. it’s a risk vs benefit analysis. In my situation and on this occasion, yes definitely very responsible to be out alone, and fantastically good for my sense of self agency 👍☺️
What’s the name of your lantern, please?
Both lights are not primarily lanterns but double as lights. One is the Flextail Tiny Pump (air mat pump) and the other the Flextail Tiny Repel bug repeller. I love that they both have two uses. It makes me feel that their weight in my pack is justified.
Adventure Ot I love you so much I am from Bangladesh.i would like to join with you.
Thank you. Hopefully you can find some nice places in Bangladesh to enjoy the outdoors.
Ok thanks
Интересно, эти птицы съедобны? Я не для себя, друг интересуется.
Your 'friend' has noticed how meaty they look (ha ha), but tell your 'friend' they are a protected native bird species so they are not allowed to be eaten.
❤ فيديو رائع جدا جدا جدا جدا اتمني ان يكون لدي زوجه جميله مثلك
Thank you

Have you tried the Gunya shelter, ua-cam.com/video/Xl0pw4NUVh0/v-deo.html
Oh my gosh, I hate to admit it, lol, yes. This was my poor attempt that did not go to plan. I learnt that freezing wind and driving sleet is not the best time to be trying out a new tarp configuration. ua-cam.com/video/XLBoRXfRUNY/v-deo.html
A lone wolf shelter is far safer.
Hi Scott. Pardon my ignorance, what is 'a lone wolf shelter'?
You are climbing for hours and not using your trekking poles. Why have them .
New Zealand is a great back yard spot ?? Really?? Then you have never been to Canada
Canada looks to be out of this world spectacular. I really hope to travel around and explore it one day. However…. I am sure NZ can still be a great spot, even if there are other great spots in this world 😉 I grew up in Africa. NZ isn’t a patch on Africa for vast intense dramatic beauty, but it’s incredible in its own right way 😊
You really tough it out under those tarps, I much prefer a tent.
Enjoy your vlogs, keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!
Enjoy 2025
Thank you so much. You too.
Thanks!
Thank you Ahmed! That is very kind of you. So appreciated.
