too bad that the new one has your voice exclusively on the left channel
I was new to video, and still am. :) Unfortunately I can't re upload and keep my views. But I do have a re-mastered version on my website for my members. You can see more here: www.musicandguitarlessons.com/register/music-theory-one-lesson/
I use ableton and camtasia now. This was my first video, and is not as high of quality as my others. :)
Tom Woods sent me and I am pleasantly surprised to see a young dude. I don't know if you are an Ancap but you have attention. Long Live Liberty!!
Hi Ross, how come in the last section the Bb goes back two degrees to G on the V chord but D and F only go back one degree to C and E on the V chord? I can follow everything on your vid, just caught on that last bit. Thanks. Great vid. I bought your sight reading book too 🙂👍🏻
Knowing literally nothing about writing music other than what I've put together just listening, I had some personal mind-blowing revelations watching this video. This helps a TON.
Highly effective and efficient communication - boiled down to the nuts and bolts, without making it any more complicated than it needs to be. You earned my 20 bucks, dude! Looking forward to the book...
Your teaching style is amazing! Breaking theory down into simplified and concise terms. Thank you for taking the time to create this learning space. I'm super grateful!
You are very welcome 😁
dude I teach guitars too...but you are wayyyyyy better...I learned a few things here and there too...looking forward to reading your books!! keep it up!!
Thank you Ross, you took the mystery out of this subject. Amazing how they don't brake it down like this.
You are an incredible teacher. I spent a lot of time trying to learn what you quickly taught in 25 min.
This is one of the best lessons, which I started out with this.
Hello Ross I am from Colorado Spring and just got into music i am learn very fast and working quite hard. Thank you for you videos. They are very helpful !
The scientific explanation of the sound waves interacting with each other and making the overall sound either noise or music was an eye popper!
Tv
Thank you, Mr. Trottier for the video lesson.
Really enjoyed that. Trying to do something about over 35 years of confusion, sh#t teachers and er, laziness. Thanks.
Keep it up you will get there!
Hands down most i have learned from a video lesson. I have been stuck in a rut of confusion and frustration and this helped tremendously so thank you and you earned a sub! 👍
Thanks so much! :) I hope you see my other videos. You would probably love this one: ua-cam.com/video/kvGYl8SQBJ0/v-deo.html
Something I always wanted to learn you taught me in only 23 mins. I already feel like I've improved by months with guitar by watching this. Thanks!
I've tried learning theory in school and college and it never clicked. I could never grasp why certain notes went well with each other, but some didn't. I just knew some notes didn't sound well with others. but you make understanding theory a lot easier and approachable than i ever thought was possible. I thank you and look forward to purchasing your book for further knowledge. you're a musical saint!
+Markus Pisano I am so glad you like the video! If you need any help with the content in the book, please send me an e-mail or message. ross@musictheoryinonelesson.com
+Markus Pisano Just wanted to let you know I have a new video series out. :)
www.musictheoryinonelesson.com - It is an animated version of the book. As always, please let me know if you have questions. :)
This is a nice video thank you, the air moves back and forth tho not like you describe, more like a ruler on a desk when you give it a whack, or a spring, it moves like you describe when you plot the motion on a graph over time..... great video thanks again.
I liked this video so much, I ordered the Music Theory In One Lesson book off Amazon. It's definitely one of my favorite book purchases of 2018. I take the book with me almost everywhere and have recommended it to other musicians. Thanks for the great videos.
i can tell that this is comprehendable but i wish i was one of your students so i can actually kinda fully understand. u really are a geniues teacher :) im just very slow
Much appreciated 👍
Keep studying!
Yes ... you should probably tune your guitar before filming a video ! Talk about space lol
Not roasting ya, just found that funny. Thanks for helping get people into music theory, it's one of those subjects that a lot of people find intimidating. You did a good job starting with talking about wavelengths to start with I feel it made a lot of people let their guard down and be more open minded to the idea of learning what can be an intimidating subject.
hey look Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop
Great lesson sir , definitely more informative and well paced , even purchased the kindle version of your book , definitely a good dive in quality knowledge.
see you space cowboy....
I have Ross Trottier’s excellent book of 100 reading exercises. This book starts with extracts from “ Music theory in one lesson”It builds your confidence on the treble clef and how to play the individual notes via You Tube lessons.Overall, you learn a lot about time signatures, articulations etc.Well worth a purchase.
Ross, ingenious chart for non readers. Thank you, JG (A fellow music teacher.)
You have made this so much easier for me! Thank you for the way you explain.
Great info just wish you displayed neck of guitar.
Brilliant video... I bought the kindle version of the book on amazon within a minute of watching this. :-)
"The bassist can take the D" hehe, I have heard that in the other context too many times!
lol
Super awesome video. I finally get the scale systems! Thank you for making it so easy.
i just bought an ukelele, and this will help me a lot, thanks.
Awesome thanks
You explained that better than I ever could, my Son, learning Piano, as usual, won't listen to Dad, now it clicks, I watched the light bulb go on in his head lol.
Subscribed! I’m so excited to play with your worksheet, discover scales, chords and melodies!! Thank you!!!!
How u doing so far Christy
I recognize a good job, well thought out ,, I will emulate you.
Thanks alot for your initiative!! Much love!
Absolutely! :)
Excellent presentation and explanations. I get it completely
Excellent
This was very helpful. Thank you!
You are very welcome! If you liked this one, check out this version: ua-cam.com/video/k1F8gUYNN_g/v-deo.html
This was simply amazing, so easy to comprehend
Great lesson. And the music you played was very hypnotic. Sounds like Mogwai or Sigur Ros.
Thanks! :)
nicely explained dude; bit more logical to understand for me personally than the 1hr one!
This was fantastic I'm going to buy your book
Your support is VERY much appreciated. Thanks. :)
Excellent ! Really good teaching !
Thanks 😎
Awesome lesson Ross. Excellent
Thanks! :)
I love this course
Ok now that made a lot of sense!! Thanks for the video. I will check out your book on amazon. Do you have a similar video on how to use scales to make melodies? Like a catchy riff or solo
Good idea
Thank u Thank u 4this video this has made it a lot easier to make music... Awesome video!!
You are very welcome! I made an EVEN BETTER version here. :) ua-cam.com/video/kvGYl8SQBJ0/v-deo.html
Ross the Music and Guitar Teacher ok kool I'll check it out
Thank you
You are absolutely welcome. :)
Absolutely brilliant, mate!
THANKS!
Of course! Is there anything you would like me to post a video about?
You're excellent at explaining things. Most folks use footage of their hands...I feel that method distracts from actually hearing what you are explaining.
Thank you so much! I am working to get better at it :)
you legend thank you hahaha. this is the best
damn after this i could make cool melodies...thnx bro it helped me to be a edm producer
Yep, watched a couple of your videos - then bought your book. I can’t believe how easy and simply you explain how to build a scale!?
Beats using those stupid mnemonic strategies. Your students are very fortunate dude.
+tony letizia thanks so much!!!
perfect video thank u
I am now having a hard time leaving this video because it was so amazing
cool thanks
Why would you think to separate 8 of the chromatic scale into their own scale in the first place? Why would it follow the pattern of wwhwwwh? why not hhwwwww, hwhwwww, etc? Arn't major and minor kind of the same thing just transposed in the same way sin and cos are just the other plus a half turn? Why use C major of all scales to determine what we label as natural and accidental? How would it effect music if another scale like dorian for example?
@2:45 wuhwuhwuhwuhwuhwuhwuhwuhwuhwuh. definitely made me laugh
Nonetheless, very good lesson here.
Why thanks. :)
Hi Ross, I've bought your book but haven't been able to download the AUDIO EXAMPLES. You're websit doesn't have a link. How do I do it?
It is on this site: musictheoryinonelesson.com/mtiol-audio-examples.zip :)
Thanks man ✌️
You use notes outside the range of human hearing to interact with other notes in fun ways
Awesome way to learn music theory, thank you for your effort :D
one question though, If you are playing in the key of F major, playing major chords, then how come for the root key G, second part of the melody, would be played in a minor scale instead of major, thus being G,B,D? thinking about it more while writing this or is the B i mentioned actually a B flat?..sorry if my explanation is a bit confusing xD
or disregard what i just mentioned, whats mixing me up is when you were choosing they keys of F major, u choose Bflat instead of A#, while to me they're the same thing (same note position), why Bflat in specific?
Good question! If you used A# instead of Bb, your scale would contain two forms of A, and no B. For Example: F G A Bb C D E F vs. F G A A# C D E F
ohhh ok. now things make more sense :D..Thanks a lot Ross!. Keep up the good work. Looking forward for more videos. Do you still do Skype lessons?
I will continue to add at least 2-3 videos per week. :) I do still give skype lessons, but my calendar is super packed. www.musicandguitarlessons.com/book-a-lesson
faramir best music teacher
Hey thanks man, great mind. That physical melody path layout is totally new to me and I dig.
(For loop round in key of F, your second note of second melody should have been a C, no? Minor scale to create minor chord?)
Hi Daniel! The Bb is the minor 3rd of g minor, which is our ii chord. I feel that you might be reading the chords vertically with the melodies, and mistaking "a minor" for "g minor". If it were a minor, however, it would be a C. :) Thanks for watching!
Touché, good sir. Thank you for spreading knowledge.
Absolutely! I also have some fun interactive stuff. Here is a crossword I just put up. :)
www.musicandguitarlessons.com/interactive-music-theory-crossword-puzzle-minor-scales/
Ross the Music Teacher why did you leave the Roman numeral lower case? i know its to signal that you will you minor but why its there a rule?
That is the rule, yes. When you get to a level with music where you begin to change chords, borrow and modulate it will become very important. :)
You are my hero!!!
Thanks for watching. Glad to help!
when a note refers to a wave length, and you go up in the frequenzy very very high, then in some point it would be waves of light, right? so you could refer a number to some kind of colour? like B is red and G is blue or something?
Yes
#musictheory
Cool video man. Thanks for sharing that. Is there a place where I can download your Harmonic Map template? The link in the description seems to no longer work. Thanks again man.
Hello Ross, thanks a lot for this video. Question: Why did you skip the 3rd chord?
I purchased a few of your books but was wondering where i can find this worksheet at?
I really want to purchase this in paperback format but its not available in Canada. :(
holy crap
i genuinely feel like making music after watching this video, thanks
You are very welcome 🙂
The download for the worksheet is no longer active :(!
Hi Ross thanks for videos have 1 question as i have found this a little confusing as many teaches do this by starting on the c so iam having a problem finding the starting point from this. Sorry oap so things get confusing easily
Theory is SO daunting D:
One step at a time my friend. :)
Why do the chords on the map goes 1,2,4,5.instead of 1,2,3,4
Clever
Hey Ross very good video. What university did you go to?
Hey Ross it's Evan loper you uhhhh dated my sister glad you're in a good space I'll hit you up for private lessons when I can.
Oh damn! Nice to hear from you. I hope all is well with you and the family.
At ua-cam.com/video/VOuMXN2z8Vw/v-deo.html Ross says, "...outside of our range of hearing ,even, and you could probably compose music people couldn't even hear". At high-enough frequencies this "music" could include a "light show"? ;)
Very true!!! :)
You are the Bob Ross of music theory.... and your name is Ross
Very nicely explained! I think I'll get your book. But the question I always had is that if you use such a tool to make up scales/chords, then how do you learn and recall when you don't have this sheet?
BTW, I looked up your book on Amazon but everyone's complaining about the ebook formatting for Kindle. Kindly fix it!
+komalthecoolk It is fixed! But they wouldn't remove the reviews of the old format. Learning to recall this is quite easy, and one can set up sets of mental practice. You can recite these scales and chords out loud, or try to visualize them without the sheet. With practice, it will become faster.
+Colorado Springs Guitar and Music Hey! I bought your book on Amazon Kindle edition and I read it on my Android phones and tablet but I can't find the the audio samples you're talking about. Can you tell me how I can find them?
+komalthecoolk They should be embedded directly in the book. If you click on the speaker icon they will play. Otherwise, go to www.musictheoryinonelesson.com. I hope they work for you :)
+komalthecoolk www.musictheoryinonelesson.com/audio-examples/
Also, try playing the examples using and instrument or DAW. :)
+Colorado Springs Guitar and Music Thanks a lot for the help! I am very excited to use your material and get good at this :)
Under witch bit is this to print on website thanks.
putting them into scales only seems to obscure the halfstep relationship between the chords. I is 4,3. ii is 3, 4. IV is 4,3 and V is 4,3. Also whatever happened to III or is it iii? When arranged in the scale the 3,4 and 4,3 relationship is obscured and to reveal it you have to come up with the capitalized or lowercase additional rules. This system creates holes only to create patches for them. It would be so much simpler if the 12 notes were just labeled 0 to E on in docinal notation.
This video is for beginners and you are over complicating things by a mile my friend. Using this system only gets people to become familiar real musicians use notation.
@@rossthemusicandguitarteacher its seems the complication is on the part of the notation musicians have been conditioned to use. I am merely trying to untangle this convoluted knot that is current music theory
@@lukostello notation really isn't all that complicated at all. Just keep working at understanding.
16:22 I GUESS YOU'D SAY
if you would be my math teacher I would have a Nobel price
Very kind words. :) Thanks!
Great video, man. Is there any link to download the worksheet?...The text option doesn't seem to be working.
+Craig Long Thanks Craig! Here is a page I made, at your request. :) www.musictheoryinonelesson.com/worksheet
I will be releasing a much better version of this video, that will be about 1hr long, on my website soon!
+Ross the Music Teacher Awesome! Thank you man :) Much appreciated!
+Ross the Music Teacher I just tried the link (and entered my email address) and it came up with a 'link not working' page :/
rosstrottiermusic.leadpages.co/forms/6286513502945280/5639445604728832/
+Craig Long Oops! It sent you to a bad thankyou page, but you still should have the worksheet in your email now. :) It says it sent it to you on my end. Also, I am going to be doing a free 6 month course soon that covers ALL this stuff. You will receive an e-mail when it is ready. Thanks Craig!
+Ross the Music Teacher Dude, the sheet has writing all over it haha
Dude, this is actually awesome! only thing that i "didnt like" is that the chord progression sounds really cheesy xD but i think you can play with those to make it sound better right? i will love a video where you show what else you can do with those chord progressions, i have subscribe and liked the video, keep the good work man!
I wanted to say thank you not using C as a key note :)
Please how do I get the practice sheet?
I don't have it anymore but I am going to turn it into a web app
@@rossthemusicandguitarteacher thanks
Hi Ross allready have the web app?
The Beatles claim to have used dog whistles in Sgt. Pepper. They did many, many creative things with sound and music. But I don't think you appreciate them much. It's really too bad.
I like the beatles just fine! :)
Why can't we see what you're doing?
I keep getting distracted with the fact that you are really good looking. I'm gonna learn music theory and fall in love at the same time!! 🙀😸😻😽
Thank you:)
+Ross the Music Teacher
I've been noticed!!!! 😁
Love your videos, it really helped me out alot 😊
We all know that this is actually Ross's Mom, desperately trying to spark up the idea of Ross as a potential love-interest amongst the UA-cam crowd... anything to get him out of the basement so she can finally paint over the drawings of his sexual fantasies he scrawled in permanent marker on the walls!!!! ;)
John Davis smh
LMFAO
yup, learning to read music is a monster pain in the butt.
First issue I see is that I've to brainwash clean of a lifetime spent on wrong learning approach.
I still like the video. but stopped watching at 14:00 cuz I got totally lost and confused
North Land yeah it made since when he explained it but now that you pointed that out I see wat you mean. If we’re playing a d major scale and using the notes within the scale, how are we getting a g major and a major chord... I’m confused myself 😪
@@morganmanesh5142 where is the g minor? it totally lost me right there.. I had hope I was comprehending very well untill that bombshell.
North Land I was reading it horizontally. There is a IV and because it’s capitalized as he said, it’s major. So because it has a IV, you take that 4th letter and that’s the starting point. I’m not sure if that would be called the root though.
After trying for several years to become a better singer I came across Bens Singer Blog and it seems to be the best online system (google it if you're interested)
Dunja Hanssen I will check it out 😎
what a handsome man .. 🤦🏻♀️
You make music, but you can't make loud enough sound in your video...
