Werewolf by Night is finally out, and it was… good! Great in places even! After a string of cookie cutter “content” on Disney’s streamer month after month in 2022, Werewolf by Night has come along to smash the pre-conceived notions of what an MCU product can be. It is partly a stand out because it is more unique in comparison to a bland sea of offerings, but to suggest thats the only reason to enjoy it would be selling it short. It’s moody, fun, horrific and shockingly violent, yet still manages to find time to sell you on its emotional core. Its without doubt one of the best things to come out of Marvel’s Phase 4 and I hope it can set a trend going forward. What did I like the most? What didn’t quite cut the mustard for me? In this video I’ll be diving into what I loved and hated about Micheal Giachinno’s Werewolf by Night.

That Thumbnail is Perfect in so many ways!
It's Man-Thing, not Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing is DC..
Damn society moment
Let's be honest, the only difference is branding.
Manthing came 2 months before swamp thing
Agree, research thoroughly!!! Man-thing is is Marvel, get it right or else the face the music (pun intended).
@@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human there's honestly a LOT of differences between the two if you look past surface level stuff
I really loved how they used CGI sparingly, Werewolf By Night’s design is all make up and it looks great! They only use CGI when they need to like with Ted and the bloodstone, and I think other MCU projects should learn a lesson from Werewolf By Night when it comes to CGI
💯💯. Agree.
Even Ted had a practical suit im pretty sure, they just used cgi to enhance it
@@yogislayer8818 Which is great! Not only is it more immersive, it gives the VFX artists a break
I love the homage to the classic wolfman look
I think that "Ted?" line is more forgivable in the greater context of the story. To me, it seems like part of the theme of this was realizing the fact that these monsters have (or can have) humanity as well. The big monster they hear roaring in the distance is Ted, the werewolf isn't going to kill her because he doesn't want to. In the beginning, I don't think she actually knows that but learns it along the way.
And to a character with Elsa’s harsh history and demeanor, it would be understandably jarring to hear a name so benign describe a creature supposedly worse than any monster anyone there has faced that also happens to be friends with some random man she currently perceives as just a dork trying to rescue him. In this instance, the comedy is far more organic to the situation its in, something that has become rarer for properties like Marvel that make everyone spew jokes and quips during moments where they are ill-suited.
The amount of care put into Man-Things cgi is really clear, especially after how Abomination looked in the She Hulk finale.
It’s also proof of how better the product turns out when they actually build a man thing prop to act alongside the actors on screen. Get’s a great reference for all the animators and for all the actors!
Funny I thought Abomination looked good in the finale. It’s She-Hulk herself that looked off most of the time
Fairly certain Man-Thing was all practical except for the shots where he was running
Man thing was mostly practical, only the shots of him running & attacking are CGI
I see some people complaining about Werewolf’s too human like appearence and not being large nor wolf like enough. The counterargument is usually revolved around how the look is based on his original appearence in the 30’s which looks exactly like this, and as for me I was okay with it because it reminded me so much of Beast from the X-Men movies. Man looks exactly like Werewolf but blue and I appreciate this vid for including a bit of Beast clip here for comparison sake. I’d rather have this smaller and more grounded take on the werewolf instead of a big CG monstrosity like what the MCU would usually pull off these days
Oh beast you say? 🤭
Well the Marvel monster characters are supposed to be based on classic movie monsters and the Werewolf By Nights design is based on The Wolf Man from 40s. So people complaining about the design must have missed the whole vibe the short was going for like he is supposed to look like a classic werewolf. Sure the 8 feet tall, roided, out wolf beast is cool but its been done to death and I agree with you that its a breath of fresh air to go back to the old school werewolf design, which I haven't seen on screen since The Wolfman remake back 2010.
He looks really good tho! I'm legit so glad they didn't do crazy cgi
@@smuggrog9821 And just like 2010’s Wolfman, they managed to add modern touches to the design, especially in regards to the beast form’s physicality, without taking it too far from the classic film werewolf design of the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Even the choice to not obscure much of the face with prosthetics evokes the Werewolf Of London, a film older than the original Wolfman, and further allows the audience a chance to connect to the creature through its expressive human face, something that the story uses further when Elsa successfully connects to and tames the creature.
Tbf I think the "Ted" beat was purposeful character development. Elsa is caught off guard by the monster having a human name (because keeping with the theme, no matter how hard she tries to escape her family their monster hunting legacy stays with her) and it further establishes Jack as someone who sees the human underneath
I hope they at least change Agatha into a Special Presentation, she doesn’t need a series or a special, but at the very least/most
After feeling totally burnt out from Marvel fatigue lately, 'Werewolf by Night' was a huge breath of fresh air.
I would be a lot more excited for Marvel shows/films again if they put out less of them but maintained this level of quality and originality.
Ted was Man-Thing's real human name and Jack Russell is the Werewolf's real human name in the comics so naming them Ted and JR was more of a comic nod than a lame joke. Maybe check the comics before making these videos, it was an easy to know reference.
One of the best things to come out of Phase 4.
You mean one of the only decent things to come out of Phase 4
Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly were amazing!!!
We need more Jack Elsa and Ted!!!
🌕🐺
I agree. It is one of the best things to come out of phase 4. I hope we see these characters again but if not then at least we got a great short movie.
3:00 I couldn't disagree more. The dialogue in the cage and tension buildup to the transformation was one of my favorite scenes
It was well executed but it just involved stopping the pace
This special is a great change of pace and stakes, I really enjoyed it. I think the one thing that didn't hit for me were the visual effects. They're not used often, but I could have really gone for a big man-sized puppet and some janky stopmotion for Man-Thing, and I would have liked some hand-drawn animated wisps emanating from the Bloodstone instead of what's obviously been done with a computer. If you're going to have film grain, vignetting, and even reel transitions to evoke a tone and style of movie, then having the visual effects in there really kind of throws you out from that immersion. When it does go to color, fair game, make everything as Computer Generated as you like, it never looked bad, in fact it looks really good (probably because there aren't thousands of shots that need it), but when it's black and white and you're shooting for that 50 and 60s underground feel, you need to keep it in that era with the effects, too. The Practical stuff with the body parts and the corpse were great, more of that please! More of these types of specials, too. Less movies stretched out over 6 episodes and pretending they're shows, more actual shows with defined episodes or these one-off specials.
Tragically, I have encountered numerous complaints that the effects weren't CGI enough for them. Someone was angry because his face wasn't hairy enough and - I quote - 'you can totally tell it's a man in a costume'. Words fail.
@@MinesAGuinness Wow. That's awful. They definitely used a man in a suit, but the only part that's clearly real is when he grabs Jack through the bushes. That's Carey Jones' arm, and that's the only scene untouched with CGI on Man-Thing. He looks phenomenal, but this was the time to go all practical, a bit more low tech, and then you get the reveal of what he actually looks like at the campsite.
@@MCLegoboy They did go all out practical for Man Thing tho. They built a whole body for him that could be animated manually. The CG on him is for all the obvious reasons like fighting, etc.
I saw the title, watched werewolf by night, and I agree with most of your points. You seem a bit jaded toward the humor, where I see it as a breath of fresh air and a bit of subversion. I enjoyed the goriness of it and I don't think you praised the choreography enough. The deaths are on john wick levels in how brutal and efficient they are. The action wasn't choppy af like most marvel things where you see 2 seconds of one fight, swap angles 2 seconds more, swap fights and repeat. As a marvel property I would give it a 9, but comparing it to all movies I'd give it around 8.5. It excels in what it wants to show. Anyways thanks for making a video on this. If I hadn't seen the title and known how tough of a critic you are, I would have passed over this as more disney plus garbage.
We almost didn't watch it - just been burned out on the Disney stuff. I'm glad we did, I feel like the short run time could have been expanded more into a feature length to get alittle more meat on the bones - but the core story - they handled great. I'd give a B. Not AMAZING overall but really well done. Great choices for leads, I hope to see more of them. No real flaws in this that weren't pointed out already.
I want Michael Giacchino to make a full black and white theatrical film based on the Legion of Monsters or the Midnight Sons
This wins the best thumbnail award haha
Man-Thing*
It makes me so happy that you mention the Star Trek soundtrack because that is one of my all-time favorite soundtracks, and no one seems to care about it
Star Trek 2009 has probably my favourite film soundtrack ever, so I care about it 😄
@@TomStapo That warms my heart so much :)
It was so good, Now I want Morbius to join the Midnight suns
unironically, or ironically?
@@mikez4388 no joke, that would be a crazy monster/ midnight suns line up. Blade, ghost rider, Morbius, Werewolf by Night, Moonknight, Elsa Bloodstone, Manthing and whomever else!
To be fair Man-Thing really is named Ted.
I know that there will be other comments about this but it is Man-Thing not DCs Swamp Thing. I get that it is an easy mistake to make, but also a quick way to lose a ton of credibility right out of the gate. General good stuff though & agree the MCU should continue to spread its wings. Though I still think that should include series as some stories are way better in long form. Kind of like the original comics where series and one-shots can exist together. Sidenote is a lot ambiguity if this takes place in the "main" MCU, but that was also the case with Moon Knight.
love your videos but you said swamp-thing instead of man-thing, just letting you know. Great video!
That Thumbnail is Perfect in so many ways!

*long sigh*
I like how you (maybe) accidentally did the weird name joke thing with Jack Russell
I honestly loved it. I really hope we get more from the mcu in this style or just really any style that isn't the basic mcu one. I'd love more of these special presentations
This special was a breath of fresh-ish air
I've always been a huge classic monster fan, so I was really excited about this. And I can say it definitely delivered!! The lore behind Jack and Elsa was spot on, and I think they did their dynamic well, also with Man-Thing. I was really glad to see him in the special. He's one of my favorite characters. And the black and white presentation was really nice, and the film style tint was a nice touch. Really got me immersed. And it's underrated I feel. Not everything has to be bombastic and colorful. In fact, the black and white being the main style makes the Blood stone stand out beautifully. Similar to the Sin City films, but in an occult way. The only thing I found somewhat disappointing in a sense was that I was hoping the werewolf side to Jack would be more wolf like. But I am a classic monster fan, and so I get they were going with a Wolf-Man style. And they certainly pulled it off. All around I had a great time watching it. Hope it's a taste of the future for the darker side to the MCU, especially the Midnight Suns.
You gonna review Andor?
Love the vid, but I still find it funny when an English person tries pronouncing an Italian name (Michael Giacchino)
7:18 same lol
im american and i have two jack russels. i love them more than anyhting :)
Just watched & thought it was absolutely awesome! Best thing I’ve seen on Disney+
I thought the casting & characterisation were spot on, I loved the premise and how it was filmed. I especially loved the audio landscape they built throughout this movie - evocative incidental noises, the music was scored perfectly to time with the tension and the jump scares. I’m actually feeling rather happy that after the abomination (sic) that was SheHulk I have now had the joy of watching this special.
This was the best Hulk story we got since 2012.
Yeah
“Without a single glib line” Daredevil be like: Am I a joke to you?
Did u just forget that subclip was repeating over and over there? Happens to the best of us. 😂
I’d love to get your thoughts on she hulk!
Agreed
1:23 "Without further adieu"
Have not even heard about this.
Are you gonna make a video on andor
Great. Now I want a B&W version of The Batman
To me it kinda just felt like any MCU project but it’s black and white and the music is different. Yes here are other changes to the formula here, and I appreciate them, but any time two characters are talking to each other or the camera is panning over a new location, it really doesn’t feel any different from their other stuff to me. That being said, I do hope this change-up is a sign of things to come. At the end of the day it’s at least slightly different and apparently that’s all I can ask for these days.
yeah, I really don't see what people see in this, it was fun but nothing actually amazing
was really good or is only good in comparison with the last year content?
Well there doing both specials and tv shows so I’m excited
Werewolf by Night is an odd character. Yes, his name actually is Jack Russell. Also, some writers treat Jack and the werewolf as two different entities. In one of the many Marvel Zombies books, Jack Russell is infected and becomes a zombie, then he turns into the werewolf...and the werewolf isn't a zombie, even though Jack is.
But then, Marvel Zombies is a whole new breed of what the shit, so...
honestly maybe not alot of people in general watched the special but it was great
Yes, Jack Russell Terriers are a thing in America 🤣
Wait, when was Blade shut down? I thought it just lost a director?
I like to think that everything in the MCU has a purpose beyond a one off story. I didn't read the comics and have really enjoyed how they introduce a character in a movie or series and then drop them into future storylines.
I did enjoy Werewolf by Night, I just hated the costuming for it. It looked like a campy 1950s Lon Chaney hair shirt with fake musculature under the hair. Maybe this was intentional but then how do you present Jack Russel in future projects?
By the way, Americans do have Jack Russel Terriers; my dog is a Jack Russel/Chihuahua mix seen next to this comment.
I like his design, it’s done practically and is a good mix between human and wolf imo
An excellent take on the old Lon Chaney style of Wolf Man. And extremely comic accurate in appearance. So I don’t mind that it looks a bit “meh” in comparison to some costumes in other peoples eyes. Honestly I love Elsa’s look in the comics but understand why they went the way they did with her look in this.
Honestly loved it although unlike most people I enjoyed some of the new ravel movie specifically multiverse of madness o definitley can’t say that there hasn’t been a lot of stinkers recently
Needed to be longer it felt very rushed, like it went from act 1 straight into an act 3 and skipped act 2. An extra 20-30 minutes of story would have been very nice to settle into the story.
And Americans call the Dogs Jack Russel Terriers.
I thought it was really boring and dumb but I also agree with most of your points to a certain extent
I absolutely love it
I thought it was good but it did feel a lot they it’s a Disney thing
The creators of Werewolf by Night claim that the name is a coincidence, but everyone's made the joke
8:10 That Batman theme is by far one of the worst
I was disappointed in the transformation. All the best werewolf movies give you an onscreen transformation. I get the shadow affect is cool but come on. It would have been so good to get an old school practical werewolf transformation. I would say i was just whelmed by the overall product like most marvel products. If they had made a movie rather than one hour special i probably would have liked it better.
This is what “experimental” looks like, by marvel standards anyway. So can we all please shut up about how “unique” Wandavision apparently is?
Is it, though? It's just slightly more creative. It's not a boost in quality.
I thought it was good but was disappointed at the lack of horror. That 16+ rating was not utilised at all.
No
Swamp thing is DC dude
It was average it just looked great compared to the dumpster fire She hulk

It's overrated.
This bloke says so much and nothing
I thought the presentation was much needed. The ability for MARVEL to be unique has kind of been lost in the last couple of years.
Compared to the usual crap the mcu are dishing out lately it was okay, but wasn't great.
it's egregiously mid
