- changed the stock front sprocket(16T) to a Driven 17 Tooth. in this video i open and install a after market front sprocket without cutting or taking off the chain. i did not buy a speedo healer yet! stock % that the bike is off is -5.2. with me going 1 up in the front and keeping the rear stock. It puts the % out after the change to +0.7 so id did not see the need for one right now. I will buy one at some point. my next video will have a test ride before and after the change. i hope this video was helpful!

Hey Homes, your chain was tighter than tight...are you trying to use it as a guitar string ? Your output shaft bearing, cases, shaft and swing arm bearings will not last for shit if you keep that up. Next time do your homework more thoroughly. . . after all, you're trying to teach others, may as well do it the right way.😳

JIGA BACHI street bikes need about 1.2 to 1.6 inch of slack I hit the chain down one way not both meaning you seen it move half of its slack. But I will be waiting for everything to go bad.
@@MCON89 It's been 3 years, did you ever have any issues? It was technically too tight, but I'm not here to flame about it, I'm just curious haha. It wasn't INSANELY tight or anything
nah, MT09 spec state that the slack is 5mm lol. I run that specs for 3 years. No issues

when you set the left and right chain tensioner you dont go by the hash mark on the swing arm. you should adjust the left and right tension bolt according to sprocket alignment . the sprocket tooth should sit in the middle of the chain with even gap left and right. what you do is have the bike on the stand. roughly set the tension by the hash mark then spin the wheel and see where the sprocket rides in between the chain links. then adjust either bolt so the teeth rides in the middle . keep spinning the wheel til you get it right and check chain tension thru out as the sprocket might become ovaled from wear . there be tight spots and loose spots so find the tightest spot and adjust it to factory spec then you wont wear out your components prematurely .

Going up 1 tooth to 17 reduces your cruising rpm's by about 400 rpm's. His chain is too tight.
I agree the chain is too tight, should have min 1" movement and it looked like one eighth
It is too tight but in his defense the manual calls for like 2-5 mm. Crazy tight but Yamaha won’t admit their mistake. Same with the rear axle bolt, it calls for 108ft lbs which is why a lot of us have aftermarket adjusters, we’ve already stripped the factory axle block due to too much torque

@@koopspook the general consensus (fz09 forum) is 80 pound feet. There are quite a few torque specs in the manual that are way too high. I know we should trust the engineers but they’re not the ones out here replacing stripped and broken parts. The oil drain plug calls for 31lbs and the amount of stripped oil pans is astounding so about 25lbs is what has been determined to be safe. If it makes you feel better you can always use safety wire but I don’t believe it’s necessary. I started using 80 lbs after i stripped my own axel block and swapped for a set of Gilles adjusters, which i highly recommend and I’ve never had the nut back off.

I have a tracer and would like to do this. It's buzzing at 4k at 60mph and I do a good bit of interstate riding. How was first gear pulling out after this change? It seems first is already a little tall with the stock front sprocket.

Everyone commenting about the chain tension should look up Yamaha's chain slack spec. It's way tighter than most street bikes, 0.2-0.59 inches.... which is TIGHT. I run around 18-19mm measured on the sidestand. Found this vid to see how people were running the countershaft sprocket.
It's bad practice to replace a sprocket or sprockets without the chain. Also looks like you got a 520 pitch sprocket while the bike is 525 stock.
it is also wrong in the manual and they fixed it. loads of people who destroyed their bikes looking at the manual
@@cfvgd nope, run 5mm slack for 3 years no issues. Yamaha confirmed it was CORRECT.
@@donkeizluv Yamaha confirmed to me that it was not. They also changed this in the new user manual. Many broke their chains. Some even bent their axels.

MCON89 did you shim it at all? mt09 sprocket thickness is 11mm but the r1 one is 10.8mm? if you didn't shim it has everything been OK so far and how many miles have you done on it? I have just ordered a 43 tooth rear sprocket and considering the 17t front aswell
when you order it switch the bike to fz/mt and it will come the right thickness just make sure you install it the correct side in. iv had it for about 2200miles and have had no problems with it at all

MT09 chain slack spec is 5mm. I run that for 3 years and no issues.
Anybody tried 18t front?
Not an 18, but I have done 17-43. At hwy speed rpm dropped about 800 rpm. The motor still has plenty of low end to get off the line

This is painful to watch - someone who clearly hasn't a clue what they are doing , without the proper tools and who uses the ones that he has very awkwardly. Please do not rely on this video if you wish to do a similar mod to your bike.
