Funny thing is we came here because of people mentioning you channel on theirs. They camp like we do...no minimalist for us, we have big bikes so we camp BIG (no trailer). Just subbed to you and loving it so far. We are excited to follow you on the long trip. We've done several CC trips and now looking to go to Alaska next year. Roll Safe.
Search "adel clamp", it is a clamp with a rubber cover. you could put them on the engine guard to stop movement of the straps or use 2 clamps with a small bar between them to create hard mounting points for the straps.
Richard and Chris are awesome folks. Got to meet and hang with them as they just so happened to be camping in the same campsite as us when we were in North Carolina 8 weeks ago.
I figured you would camp night there. No to cast iron Skillet. I got an ideal for front bag . If could make a shelf that would bolt to engine guard that would fold up when not in use. That bag have place to sit. Hum have seen them fold Stadium seat that take into stadium they fold up and they are Aluminum just a thought.
lol Wish I could have! I'm trying to cram five days of work into two right now so I could only squeeze in a day trip to meet up with them. haha! Thanks for the idea Doyle!
I loved this! I enjoy watching campers cook. It’s always alluring and makes me want to just go camping! Thank you for introducing us to these adventurous riders!
Thank you very much. Update on my motorcycle plans. We have a company called Revel that has scooters and since I’ve never ridden a motorcycle I am going to be riding around on the scooters in New York City just get used to riding something that’s motorized and goes faster than I can on a bicycle. I took my Revel lesson yesterday and did really well. Over the next couple of years I hope to ride the scooters a lot and get used to the way a motorcycle type vehicle works at least speedwise and handling wise to a certain extent As to whether or not I would pack a cast iron frying pan or skillet my camping trip. If it were my only pan, most definitely. A well seasoned, well cared for skillet is the best way to cook your food if you’re going to fry. Even if I had more than one pan, I would like to have a skillet in the mix only because they can be so versatile.
I do travel with a cast iron skillet. It's a "cowboy skillet" or "Lodge L6OG3 8 3/8" Round Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Griddle with Handle" that I use to make pancakes in the morning. It's low profile and isn't terribly heavy. I pre-package in ziploc bags 1 cup of Kodiak Cakes Power Cakes brand pancake mix and mix the water right in the bag at the right time. I find this meal to be a good start to my day, plus strong coffee from my AeroPress.
We wouldn't make fun of you for blowing up a saddlebag, as brother and sister riders we might tease you a little bit. As another youtuber I watch says "it is a cautionary tale". Truthfully, a mistake that doesn't get you hurt and you can share with us is a teaching moment. We love you and your content. As for the answer about a cast iron skillet. I am not much of a chef so I would need a non stick surface to cook on that I wouldn't have to worry about re-seasoning if I messed up the seasoning on the cast iron.
Rich reminds me on myself a couple years back on a company motocycle Tour w 28 riders one fell and broke the footrest I am pulling out my Tool Kit one guy yelling to me Peter leave the welding kit we do not need it. Starting as a 2stroker you always prepared for any repairs.🏍🏗
I found your channel recently and love it , I have been watching Chris and Rich fore a wile and it was neat to see you guys meet up . Im just starting my journey on my bike in a few weeks and have learned a lot from your content thank you , and hope to see you on the road in the future .
I got rid of my street and went back pure dirt, I don't even bring a skillet with me on the overlanding rigs. My wife got me this sweet JetBoil skillet thing, that is stupid easy to clean and I make burgers/steak in it. It holds the spatula and the bag cleans it.
3:28 Home cooking while riding! I would be eating canned food and sleeping on a cot with a bivy bag. Also recommend getting another pre paid service in case your carrier doesnt have service where your at... from a recent expierence where my batt died & had to hike a mile up hill to get someone to jump me only to find out if I had another carrier I would've got service.
haha! It is easier to make real meals on the road than it looks! Even without all of their kit lol I have extended service through Verizon and then I have the InReach to text when I don't have service Ive got it covered.
@@AstheMagpieFlies that would be a good video topic if you haven't covered it before. I also am looking at the jnReach because of the new dual sport, cell service is great till you get out in the boonies, and I remember your painful ride so I am getting one.
So glad that you got to meet up with them. I have seen a few of their videos and they seem like great people. Have had the opportunity to full time in an RV for a few years in the past. Never thought about full-timing on a motorcycle. Answer, no I don’t travel with a cast-iron skillet. Too heavy, bike too small, I try to go as light as possible. Their circumstances, bikes, and lifestyle on the road are on the other end of the spectrum from me, at present. 😎
They're pretty rad :) Motorcycle def offers a lot more challenges, but also it seems like a lot more opportunities maybe as well. Def easier to park lol
Regarding the bag straps moving around... self stick Velcro on the bar, then sew nonstick Velcro tabs on the straps where needed. Regarding an iron skillet...I use a 8 inch lodge skillet with lid. The skillet has two small handles on each side rather than one long handle making it more compact to pack. It works as a fry pan, a mini Dutch oven and I cut the bottom of a cast iron grill pan (the ones with raised grill ridges) to sit flush inside so I can grill chicken or steak. It isn’t light, but not ridiculously heavy considering it’s versatility. Aluminum or titanium fry pans are pretty much only good for burning stuff from my experience. Just pack it low and you’ll never know it’s there.
Very enjoyable to come along and meet, Two Wheels Big Life motovloggers in this episode! They really have the set up going on! I would probably love to have all that if I too were living in the outside world full time, I can't wait for your adventure to start! Ride and stay safe!=)
Like (a beautiful person) attracts like (two beautiful people) , Amanda. And further proof that "You meet the nicest people (while riding) on a Honda." :)
As soon as you said, they had a different set up from you I knew who you were talking about. When Chris’s BMW bit the dust. They both got BMW GS 1250s. I am now the current owner of her a BMW.
I haven't traveled with a cast iron skillet, but I brought a 2 quart cast iron Dutch oven once. I used it to make cinnamon rolls and biscuits for biscuits and gravy. I've got room to bring it in the future but it's just so heavy that I don't really want to deal with it in the future.
lol... in cast iron, I carry a 6" egg pan, a 7" pancake/bannock pan, a 10" full meal pan and a smallish 2 qt. Dutch oven. All ballast at the bottom back of my trailer. I've been following Chris and Richard for a while... great inspiration.
That was awesome, and I have followed those two awesome full timers a bit myself. End screen, yes, a small one. I have and I will (cast iron). Happy weekend, my friend! 😁✌
That is quite a setup, amazing they can bring it all with them. I would not travel with a cast iron skillet as in the current configuration I don't have the room.
Never really bothered to cook much. Aluminum mess kit, enameled tin mug and a plastic spork are all I carry. I mostly just made coffee in the morning. Never carried actual, fresh food. An emergency freeze-dried meal, muffin and a Slim Jim or two were about it. Too many local restaurants and quickie joints to be bothered with cooking. If I was staying at a camp site for a couple days, I’d empty a pannier, ride into town and fill the pannier with ice, beer and something easy to put on a stick like hot dogs, sausages or similar. I’m lazy that way. I hate having to clean dishes while camping.
Hey whatever works for you :) I fully endorse patronizing local establishments whenever possible! I like to save money for places I really wanted to experience eating at, I found that if I made simple meals like pasta at camp it left more money for gas, which meant I could go farther lol
Question was do I travel with a cast iron pan on my motorcycle when I motorcycle camp?...the answer is yes! It fits nicely in my left rear pannier of my ST1100. Oh and I have a can opener and corkscrew on my Swiss Army knife. It has the best can opener I have ever used in the past 50 years. ;). Thanks for the video
No cast iron skillet, but the trailer is always tempting. I am thinking pop-up camper trailer, but I just can't get past the pain in butt part of hauling it! Thanks for the introduction to more awesome folks!
Right Hal! Those are my thoughts. There's a gentleman named Al who came to Rocky Mountain Roll who had the pop up camping trailer, it was so cool. If I had the money for one it juuust might be worth it lol but the only bike I have that could pull one is Lazarus lol that means getting her running good first lol
Very cool you got to meet them. I’ll have to start following their channel. Glad to see things are coming together for your trip. Would really have liked to go to RMR this year but long distance travel from SoCal isn’t feasible right now for me. Maybe next year. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Jess! They were lovely people. I love that they just took the jump even when the world kinda turned topsy turvy. No worries at all about RMR! Things this year are kind of crazy! You just remember to holler at me before you get your ticket for 2021 ok ;)
I go out of my way to leave electronics at home, but on the Super Tenere I routinely carry a cast iron skillet, cutting board, olive oil, a collapsible six pack cooler to carry ice for the camp fire sipping bourbon, sauce pan, some shish ka-bob skewers, honest too goodness percolating coffee pot. Moto-camping experience, no substitute for it... just as one learns to pack the camp stove gas. May the Magpie fly safely!!
I may have to consider a cast iron pan. I will be leaving in two weeks for a 4000 mile round trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota, then swing through Wyoming, Montana and Idaho as I circle back East. Riding a Harley Road Glide with a trailer.
That's awesome Lawrence! Sounds like you at least have the capacity for it if you wanna take it! In my opinion cast iron DOES taste better, but it does take just a little more effort to maintain on the road. So I guess it depends on how long you plan to spend at camp each day. Cast Iron isn't exactly a "camp here and leave in the morning" kind of equipment. lol
Really looking forward to your next vid. Just watched someone else’s and was grossed out by them leaving their site for good with a still lit fire. Blegh. I miss your high quality content and humanity! Hope your planning for all crazy things is going great and excited to see more! Cheers!
Thanks Nova! Oh my gosh. That's awful! I really appreciate that! Thank you! New Videos starting Next Week I promise! Between Rocky Mountain Roll and getting ready for Take Off next week I was a bit slammed. lol
As the Magpie Flies you take your sweet time and enjoy every second...(and stay sane). We’ll be patiently waiting here for you at your leisure! Your vids are definitely worth the wait! And some day I hope to make it to the Roll! Sounds and looks like a blast!
Rich and Chris have an impressive Moto camping setup. It’s a similar camping setup to me when I take my car and the grandkids! I suppose an iron skillet could double as a weapon, but I don’t even take one when I go in my car!
Right? That's what I was thinking. I mean if I was doing it full time and had a trailer I'd probably do everything I could to to be as comfortable as possible.
7:52 Maybe cushioned pipe clamps on the engine guard would stop your straps from sliding down and help maintain good strap tension. 4 on each guard. You can get them as cheap or expensive as you want online or any hardware store. Good luck! P.S. Depending on the clamp style you could attach wolfman strap mounts to the clamps and loop the straps through as opposed to just relying on the straps applying friction against the clamps. ;''')
Nice to see things coming along. I'm sure the mounting solution will present itself on the trip if not worked out prior. Side note: You might want to check out this song, "Wake Me Up" (key words: Fleurie, Tommee Profitt). EVERY time I hear it, I think, "I need to tell Amanda about this song." I hope you enjoy as much as I think you will.
Another excellent video full of information, entertainment, and excitement for your upcoming trip and videos. I do travel with a cast iron skillet on multiple day trips bc I have a trailer that I pull.
I’d not considered it, but I think I would travel with a cast iron skillet; one in particular that belonged to my mother and her mother before her that is in currently in my kitchen. Yes, I would.
If you need a back yard to camp in, in DE; reach out. And if anything happens and you want to know you have someone close who will come help you, again reach out. I’m happy to privately share a way to contact me should you need assistance in DE or south Jersey.
Cooking and self defence all in one. But if I ever did a bigger trip I would love to pull a small trailer. The Sherpax looks like it would fit my style.
another awesome video, amanda, & i've been following TWBL on the MCC facebook group. regarding the question about carrying a cast iron skillet on bike trips: no. i travel light. :-)
From the sound of it, stabilizing the bags on the engine guards is the least of your concerns. Excited? Nervous? Apprehensive? Can't wait to see the morning leaving video. Be safe ( I know you will) 😎👍
Re: your front pannier bags - I have the Giant Loop pannier pockets on my F800GS, and they attach at the top to a plastic quick release buckle, but the bottom strap was always kind of a pain. I think I have this solved by using a molle stick on the back of the bag & cinching it down to the crash bars with a Velcro strap. I can send you pictures of how I did it if you think it might help.
So cool. Just to get up every morning and just live. No rat race, no boss, way less bills😁 The amount of luggage you have looks pretty compact👌 Have you sorted an auxiliary light setup?
As far as cast iron goes, I spend a lot of time in my hmmwv for work and cook on a Coleman 425C (made in 1964). I prepped my skillet using tips from UA-camr Cowboy Kent Rollins.
I will go check out their channel for sure! Awesome video, I love the different things ands ways people do "the thing" as well it is so fascinating. Good luck on your Big Adventure =)
My favorite motorcycle camping story was about a guy who rode an old Harley from Arkansas to Nome, AK. All he took with him was a screwdriver, a frying pan, and a flask full of gin.Times have changed.
ha! We all have our own version of homes on the road, that's the great thing about the moto travelling community. Not one set up is the same as the other.
@@LegionarHR That story comes from a book called: The Complete Motorcycle Nomad by Roger Lovin. It's been out of print for many years, but with a bit of luck, you can find a copy at used bookstores (internet or local).
Possible simple solution for your bag mounts is to loop the top buckle on the bag around the top bar on the engine guard, this will basically hang the bag and keep it from dropping too far. When I go camping I bring my computer(s), so don't have room for a skillet.
I find cast iron pans too heavy to carry around, then again a small one good to cook for one hmmm would you burn more fuel to heat it up compared to your current one? 🤔 Sounds like a home kitchen lab test is in order with stop watch an all! 😂
I mean Cast Iron DOES retain more heat than the traditional aluminum fry pan, so you could argue they are more fuel efficient once you get them heated up. lol
Ah the life! Yes I do travel with a cast iron skillet, two infact. One smallish one great for solo dinners and one the size of an egg. That one is perfect for my morning egg moto-McMuffin.
Cast iron skillet? Depends on the weight of everything else and how long I would be gone. Everyone's load out is their load out. What I want eed to have along on a trip would be different than others. Breaks down into health, personal and desired needs\wants.
Get rid of those bags and get a duffel for you passenger seat. It gives you something to lean back on and carrys twice as much. I recommend a large northface. 150$ last your whole life. Mine is yellow so it offers some visibility as well. Also it's been on every trip since 2005 and still looks new.
As the Magpie Flies , nice there , never been that far North West ....... I subscribed to your channel. Going to see how it goes for you. I am hoping to get a new bike soon. Good luck on your adventures!!🇺🇸😃

Thanks for believing in me and not spouting ideas at me lol I appreciate it more than you know lol
lol I know the song, thanks for letting me know!
Another excellent video full of information, entertainment, and excitement for your upcoming trip and videos.
I do travel with a cast iron skillet on multiple day trips bc I have a trailer that I pull.
Great video, I'm excited to see your upcoming trip!! Nice to see you have a chat to some fellow motovloggers!! (will check them out!)
:D Thanks so much man!
I am excited for you about your upcoming trip. You'll love it.
Can't wait!
Love there set up cool. I use Mess tin's..You can pack a lot in them if you do it right. Have a great trip be safe.
Thanks 👍
Cooking and self defence all in one. But if I ever did a bigger trip I would love to pull a small trailer. The Sherpax looks like it would fit my style.
I was def looking at all that extra space, being like wow that would be nice lol
Well the wife is off tomorrow to go camping and hiking in Colorado for a week on her own. She leaves from San Antonio. Exciting
!! That is freaking awesome! I hope she has a wonderful trip!
another awesome video, amanda, & i've been following TWBL on the MCC facebook group. regarding the question about carrying a cast iron skillet on bike trips: no. i travel light. :-)
What a fabulous way to live. If only ! I love your editing as always.
From the sound of it, stabilizing the bags on the engine guards is the least of your concerns. Excited? Nervous? Apprehensive? Can't wait to see the morning leaving video. Be safe ( I know you will) 😎👍
Thanks for the tips
Hey Amanda, Checkout the Mason ADV channel, he just addressed your problem on how to connect a tool bag to the crash bars.
Yep I know Mason 👍 thanks for the input Alan
Re: your front pannier bags - I have the Giant Loop pannier pockets on my F800GS, and they attach at the top to a plastic quick release buckle, but the bottom strap was always kind of a pain. I think I have this solved by using a molle stick on the back of the bag & cinching it down to the crash bars with a Velcro strap. I can send you pictures of how I did it if you think it might help.
PS: I got the molle sticks & Velcro straps on Amazon, so not too expensive & I have extra for other purposes & projects as needed.
I was thinking of using hose clamps actually. Thanks for the input though :)
Two of my favorite vloggers
YAY :D Thanks Ron!
How cool to see you and Two Wheels Big Life all in one show :)
:D Thanks so much!
Great interview!
Thanks so much :)
I will go check out their channel for sure!
Awesome video, I love the different things ands ways people do "the thing" as well it is so fascinating.
Good luck on your Big Adventure =)
It depends on what your cooking 😊❤
Hello from Idaho! Just subbed to see this from start to Finnish. Have fun!
Awesome! Thank you! Welcome to the Magpie Fam :P
Not one set up is the same as the other.
who is this guy?
@@LegionarHR That story comes from a book called: The Complete Motorcycle Nomad by Roger Lovin. It's been out of print for many years, but with a bit of luck, you can find a copy at used bookstores (internet or local).
Possible simple solution for your bag mounts is to loop the top buckle on the bag around the top bar on the engine guard, this will basically hang the bag and keep it from dropping too far. When I go camping I bring my computer(s), so don't have room for a skillet.
Appreciate the input!
I find cast iron pans too heavy to carry around, then again a small one good to cook for one hmmm would you burn more fuel to heat it up compared to your current one? 🤔 Sounds like a home kitchen lab test is in order with stop watch an all! 😂
I mean Cast Iron DOES retain more heat than the traditional aluminum fry pan, so you could argue they are more fuel efficient once you get them heated up.
lol
Maggie when you come to Florida let me know
So fun(-: that’s a no for the cast iron :-) peace Amanda, stop and smell the roses once in a while
Thanks Rik! haha
Awesome, love your passion.
Yes! You, I mean me, will always fill your storage capacity to, well, it’s capacity!
Amanda Rocks!
AW
You’re definitely right Kenneth , she has a beautiful soul
How cool!!!!! Life goals for my husband and I. This would be awesome if we had the chance to do this eventually.
Right! So freaking awesome.
Absolutely carry a cast iron skillet ... it’s is like the Swiss Army knife of cookware
What I want
eed to have along on a trip would be different than others. Breaks down into health, personal and desired needs\wants.
Yess thanks for being a voice of reason Zurnie :)
@@AstheMagpieFlies Me!? Reasonable? rofl some days
Get rid of those bags and get a duffel for you passenger seat. It gives you something to lean back on and carrys twice as much. I recommend a large northface. 150$ last your whole life. Mine is yellow so it offers some visibility as well. Also it's been on every trip since 2005 and still looks new.
Good for you David.
I didn't see any of New England on your map. What the HECK!.
I've been wondering about the Garmin Inreach, like how useful is it while riding? Or is it more of an emergency thing?

Great way to travel. Nice video.
Where is your home base ??? It looks green and mountainee there .😃
This would be in Oregon.
I live in Portland OR and Corvallis MT.
As the Magpie Flies , nice there , never been that far North West ....... I subscribed to your channel. Going to see how it goes for you. I am hoping to get a new bike soon. Good luck on your adventures!!🇺🇸😃
When I traveled on my Harley pulling a trailer I carried a 10" cast iron skillet.
Awesome!
Independent Thinker The trailer is a Bushtech Roadstar and it handled like a dream. Fully loaded it’s about 360lbs.
I'd possibly order pizza rather than have a frying pan... but then I am not very adventury.... I live my adventures watching your vids! :D
haha! Now I'm curious have you actually ordered pizza to your campsite?
@@AstheMagpieFlies ive brought one back to it on the back of the bike if that counts? 😁
you could make a mounting bracket thingy out of dollar store cutting boards for the front bags.
lol thanks for the tip, I think I'm going to try hose clamps first.
Loved the video! They seem like great people! No skillet.
Thanks :D
No cast iron. MSR WhisperLite stove plus a www.mec.ca/en/product/5018-608/Alpine-2-Pot-Set Everything fits into the pots.
Right On
Another good video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching it Jim!
Awesome absolutely awesome
Thanks so much!
Cast iron skillet on my motorcycle? No. But I know some people that brought one backpacking.
