Throughout the past couple of years, Riot's champion design team has been hard at work updating older champions through a series of smaller scale yet gameplay altering adjustments known as Mid-Scope Updates. Today I wanted to go over them and give my thoughts on how they're changing the game for the better.

Oh, you want to know how we feel about the nerf that was her mid-scope update, huh?
In short: we were promised infinitely stacking AP along with the cooldown stacking, making Sona the Veigar of supports.
      They. LIED.
      [clearly livid] LIEDDDDD.
She now has a crappy early game, a questionable mid game and a late game she never gets to reach due to the "ff at 15" mentality. She is forced to go medic and nothing else. She has no power behind her autos and even when attempting Shotgun Sona as it's called, the damage pales in comparison to what she used to be able to put out.
Any time you see a Sona going full AP nowadays, it means that that Sona main is trying desperately to hold onto the better days of season five, the glory days where AP Sona was less restrictive and fun. It also will probably mean that the Sona player knows what they're doing. Whether or not they actually get what they want in terms of teamwork and whether or not the enemy team is going to aim for them specifically is another story.

powercreep is definitely a thing in league, but i feel as though we have reached a point where some new champions have lots of bells and whistles, like belveth and akshan, and some new champions have simpler kits, like vex or gwen, as mid scope updates become more commonplace, i think the powercreep will diminish and the playing field will even out, or at least i hope, i really do hope.

I’m a Swain main and I’ve been very satisfied with his mini-rework.
It fullfills his draintank commander fantasy and the extended ult doesn’t force him to sacrifice his survivability to deal damage by ending early as well as allows him, one of the most teamfight oriented champions in the whole game to actually stay in teamfights longer. His passive pulls were a funny CC extension but they had to go as they were making him too situationally cheezy in CC oriented teams. I also like that now you can hook multiple targets, adds a nice sense of skill expression.

And the entire league community liked it, cause it turned Swain from a pick stuck in supp and unable to play mid in a goddamn beast with the presence of a juggernaut like Mordekaiser but middle ranged while his ult is up. Sona player here! The mechanic of pre update Sona of her abilities costing around 90-110 mana with her mana being refunded if used on an ally was really toll heavy and it just promoted the stereotypical stand next to carry and mash buttons instead of being more proactive. Having her mana costs reduced feels better for roaming without the AD carry. As for the stacking stat, the impact of it is not really noticeable if you stacked a lot of CDR besides the R cooldown.

Sona is supposed to scale into the late game, having such low AP ratios is seriously underwhelming. Would it lead to people playing AP Sona? Definitely, but why would that be a bad thing?

As a Taliyah OTP, she was way more fun and enjoyable pre rework. Pre rework, i had to use my full brain power to figure out how to do basically everything, and especially in early game 1v1s. Knowing that i only won that 1v1 because i played perfectly, i planned out every single move and considered as many options as i could, that was so engaging. Just how smoothly her E, W, and Q worked together was definitely one of the fun parts of her. The amount of ability combinations added onto the fact you had to balance out your movement, as in to kite with Q, dodge their abilities, and avoid the worked ground, it was so perfect i could write a poem about it. I can't get into much depth about it though as it would take waaay too long. Overall, old Taliyah played on the brink of danger, similarly to Lillia, but with more effective range and damage. But the rework made her way more static. You can't fight early since now you're stuck waiting to get your power spike, unable to contribute much pressure early on. She also lost her carry potential, as they cut her damage in half, in exchange for a lot of CC, which hey it was nice but the price that had to be payed wasn't. Her E is reaaaaally clunky now, with how slow it sets itself up, and W practically hits itself, where before it was literally the most engaging part of her gameplay: hitting W. The ways, angles, mind games you could play that spawned just from this one single ability... And it's gone, because it's huge now. Honestly, after the rework, i started losing interest in the game, and now I don't even play it. Its sad how riot thinks there shouldn't be very niche champions on the game, they have a special place that no other champions can fill, but i guess everything has to be streamlined. Really disappointed with this "mini" rework.

Couldnt agree less. Taliyah went from a clunky one shot mage with very high couldowns to an actual control mage with very fluent sequence of abilities. Your whole kit literally matters now. Before you only cared about hitting one ability and thats it. Plus, the new W gameplay feeels realy solid now, felt really clunky to use before though. Honestly Kled needs a mid scope because he has a bit of an identity crisis. Hes supposed to be a early game lane bully who can dive a team, take out the backline, remount and gtfo.
But now his playstyle feels more like, go even early game because power creep, then die during remount animation because why not. Thats why there was that time when the only way kled was viable was when people were abusing the skaarl bonus hp interaction with sunfire. Then they removed that which leaves kled to either deal no damage and be some sort of front line with tank items. Go full assassin and let every fight be a coinflip, or go bruiser and just sorta do nothing. Also hes just painfully inconsistent to the point where it hurts.

Man, just imagine if Aurelion Sol would have gotten his mini rework around recent times too, rather than the weird one from patch 9.17.
Maybe in another reality, he did, and his kit wouldn't be getting deleted soon.
Though I'm still happy that Riot made Swain and Taliyah even better than they already were. I always liked them a lot too, but Sol was THE champion that made me fall in love with the game, and I would have really loved to see him getting a mid-scope update that would have ended up like Taliyah's and Swain's, making him better at being a control mage that likes long combat, and worse at one tapping people with a Q-W-R-ignite combo.
Let's just hope that at least Ryze is going to get a good mid-scope update. He probably needs it the most.

Personally, mid-scope updates give me hope. If everything becomes 200 years, then maybe Azir won't be perma pick ban in Pro play.
As for my list of champs that could use an update:
Twisted Fate ( his high-pressure wave-clear and global ult gameplay quickly devolve into just being a point-and-click stun bot for your team come 20 minutes. Coupled with the fact that his wave-clear isn't what it used to be, you've got yourself a really underwhelming champion on your hand. )
Nasus ( Ah, the low elo split push king. How the mighty have fallen. He's too one note and doesn't even deliver that well on his late-game power fantasy. )
Alister ( Just like Nasus, I feel that Alister is too one note. Other picks such as Leona and Nautilus deliver more and scale better than him )
    Honorable mentions are:
Ryze ( just put him out of his misery already. )
Orianna ( She has a massive team fight ult, but her base kit doesn't really spell "late-game team-fight Control Mage. She loses too much pressure when her ult is on cooldown. Not to mention that newer releases have arguably better Ultimates than her. She's pulling in too different directions, IMO. Lane bully Poke Mage and late game Control Mage. If you compare her to Viktor, you'll see that he does both things better )
Cho Gath ( somebody mentioned him already in the comments but I'll do it too. He morphed into an AP burst mage from Juggernaut Tank over the last couple of years, similar to Gragas. I believe that a champion who's whole idea is to get bigger the more he eats is supposed to be a fragile one-shot mage. )

I know I left another comment but I feel I should also mention Taliyah. I was a Taliyah one-trick for the first year or so I really got into League. And that was the most masochistic part of my lifespan as a League player. She feels easier to play now without removing the same opportunities for skill expression. I was really worried when her update was announced and though it changed her gameplay, it changed it in a way that perfectly fits my personal playstyle for mages and delivered well on the expectations that come with her thematic. The only part of her kit I will miss is ult'ing out of a bad fight. It wasn't because of its utility because it honestly wasn't reliable and was usually a waste but it was just funny knowing the enemy team could see you travel the full distance across the map.

I mained Sona before and after her update, and I agree that it was a good change. There could have been more changes to her base kit, but just the change of her passive made her so much more interactive. Instead of sitting around and waiting to scale with exp, Sona is now rewarded for actually being active in the early game. Players who can maximize her relatively poor early game are rewarded with earlier power spikes, so even though you don't need to be good at Sona in order to play her, mastering her is now incredibly valuable. It also smooths out her scaling. Before, she hit 3 powerspikes at 6, 11, and 16. Now her scaling is smoothed out so she actually becomes more powerful even between those levels

Me and my friend have been saying for years now that Riot needed to do what Rainbow Six did and do an "Operation Health". Basically just take a year off of making new content (Obviously sprinkle some in there, in this case, I mean new champs), and just fix as much as they can in the game. Rework old champions. Fix the code of the game. Work on game modes, etc... They seem to finally be going in that direction with these mid scope updates. They have been great so far. The only one I didn't care for was Taliyahs. She's more annoying to play against imo, but she was that way before the rework too so not much changed.
As an Ahri main since I started playing League 7-8 years ago, they both succeeded and failed with her update. She's not completely utterly garbage now. She lacked damage for SO long that she was always used as a utility champion instead who's only job was landing charms for picks, Everfrost, or back a few years ago Glacial Augment with Twin Shadows/GLP. Now she feels like she can carry, not as well as other mages, but she's consistent enough. She still has very clear counters *cough* tanks and bruisers, doesn't matter how much you kite them if you barely do damage to them *cough*. But she melts basically everyone else and with her ult resets, she can do it to more than 1 person a fight.
They failed in making her more interesting. I've been slowly moving away from Ahri over the years because she's too simple. She has very little depth. She's apart of the tutorial. She's clearly meant to be easy to pick up. But unlike other easy to pick up champions, she doesn't have a high skill ceiling. Most of her tech is small niche stuff like throw charm then ult directly on top of it to hide the charm. Compare that to my other main in Gangplank. You ever see Gangplank throw a barrel and immediately auto it? You probably think he's just making the timer go down faster so he can chain it to hit you. You're right. And that's the case for the majority of Gangplank players. The majority of GP players don't know that hitting barrels when you have a Sheen proc ready consumes the sheen proc and actually stores it's damage in the barrel. So lets say your barrel does 300 dmg, sheen does 100. Put barrel down, have sheen ready, auto the barrel, lose sheen proc. Barrel will now do 400 dmg. Or that GP's true damage passive stacks and doesn't just simply reset like others. So smack em with passive, blow up a barrel, hit them again, and they're taking like 600-1400 true damage depending on your level. It's stuff like that that makes GP more dynamic and interesting to play leaving out things like 2 pars. Ahri... presses E and then flash to extend charm's duration or curve it's flight path to make it unpredictable. That's nearly the limit of her tech.
As for upcoming updates. Neeko does not need one imo. Maybe her passive, but everything else is fine if you ask me. Neeko is a fair and fun champion to play and go against. Syndra I can see being changed and why but I still don't entirely agree with the choice. I just hope they make her E (Scatter the Weak) less annoying even if it means pumping more damage into her somewhere else.

As a teemo main, they NEED to bring his kit from wild rift over (W speed boost starts with a roll dash, Poison is now his passive, E is an activatable stealth like twitch but much shorter and doesnt count down when standing still or in brush). I like how his poison scales with levels so he gives up some early game damage for more scaling while his new w and e give him more of tools for teamfights, something he had none of before. His passive right now is only used as a cheese tool and doesnt really have much use outside of side lanes. I just want him to be more of an actual scout rather than a mushroom factory.

    • @halycon404
      @halycon404 Рік тому

They were going to do that once a few years ago, the entire player base revolted. Teemo is... well... there's a reason he's hated. Here's the thing. I can say that Riot has made changes to League as a whole just to balance Teemo. I wouldn't be right, but I wouldn't be completely wrong either. His passive was too strong, they changed it completely. His R has brought pro play to a screeching halt before all on it's own, so they nerfed it harder than any ability in League has ever been nerfed. That isn't hyperbole btw, his original R really was nerfed that hard, Riot created an entire mechanic just to nerf his original R. His Q and E have been all over the place in a search for a way to keep blind in check. His R messed up pro-play again in a way that made it not fun to watch, the next month they rushed in a reworked of the scanning meta. Changing him has too many ways it can mess up the entire game. There's a reason Teemo is the only champion with a true blind, and the only champion with a trap that's anything like the shrooms. Riot copies ideas off old champions all day long for overloaded champions. But one thing noone has ever said about any of them is, "Oh, it's like Teemo's.....". Teemo's signature abilities are right out, never to be repeated. Teemo is completely hands off, he's poisonous to the game. And I say that as a Teemo main. He can't ever be that good. He breaks too many unofficial rules that have came about over the years of how League is supposed to be played. Which is also why I like him. They've nerfed him to niche status, but he breaks the rules of how we're supposed to play league.

I can agree that maybe make it converge on his closest target with w, but even still that is a lot of coding to do vs. the single target stuff. And maybe possibly after that's complete (aside from the usual buffs and nerfs patch to patch) Riot could make the Rift more "dangerous" improve the dragon fights to mini boss scale; large AOE Dragon breaths, more knock ups could even make it have a final blow of its own to a champion?
Or even introduce more terrain changes based on soul. Eg, mountain causes jungles to change form randomly in 2min intervals?? Or Infernal causing areas of the map to catch fire that slows? Just brainstorming.

His Q and E are both mitigated by the dash-heavy meta, with Q being super unreliable to hit against mobile champs, and E's slow not mattering when they can just dash anyway. And then in the face of all of these champs having constant uptime combined with obscene scaling, his revive having such a delay basically always means you or your teammate revives and immediately faces an opponent whose full kit has already reset and is ready to 1-shot you.

I have always wondered if or what a update to singed might look like, he’s so seemingly simple and loved by his player base but the only thing thay keeps him playable have been a lot of stat buffs.
His Q is so signature and hard to imagine changing, but its also where the bulk of his power budget lies and might ultimately be what will hold him back, his R represents the rest of his power budget, without R he’s barely a champion.
He has no real sustain nor mobility, his R tank stats dont stand up to true damage.
He often is known for losing laning phase to the majority of other top laners.
hes almost never had a meta keystone, his player base often have multiple preferences, same when it comes to mythics. Many work but none of them feel like ‘the one’.
Its insane how dedicated some singed mains are but many admit playing singed feels like playing with a handicap, yet they often HATE the idea of a rework ever happening.

So, an adc who solos the assasin which was meant to counter her. But instead of nerfing new champions after selling their skins they should buff older ones.

For example Swain can now extend the duration of R but can't pull enemies immobilised by other players. This made him rely less on team comp and more on his E. Another example is Sona, who can now stack CDR but lost mana refund on her basic abilities when near allies. Thanks to that she no longer has to hug a player 24/7 if she wants to use abilities.

Now that Riot has been focusing heavily on mid-scope updates it's making me think that they could transition to a two phase rework system for champions that don't need a full ground up rework. They can fix whatever issues might be plaguing a champion like with Ahri, Swain, Wukong, etc and then have the visual design team slowly either touch up or completely rework their visuals almost as if they got a two part VGU just not quite to the same extent. This also means that the visuals design team and the champion design teams don't need to synch up perfectly to get a rework out allowing for more time in either team if needed. And it seems like we're somewhat seeing this with the recent teasers for the Janna visuals update.

Adc: id like to see them give graves something to make him viable as adc again, otherwise corki and lucian
    Supp: alistar, thresh, and braum

Veigar, Talon, and I can't think of a third one, I haven't been on League for almoat a year now
So, we all know how Veigar works. Charge passive stacks, get more AP, one shots for everyone. Now, I'm just saying, some QoL changes would go well with him, like, make his Q go through enemies instead of stoping at 2, let W charge the passive when it kills a minion, his E is the best Control Area on the game, but still, it's supposed to be a Black Hole, it should at least slow those inside the ability, the R could give a boost of movement speed after using it
Talon, on the other hand... he has become an outdated assassin. His thing obviously, is being the introduction to play the class (althought Zed is the assassin we've all played first), and this makes him the easiest assassin to pick up and play. He is degenerate and easy enough for him to have a decent winrate in midlane, and 48% in jungle. So, how would I update Talon? For his passive, I would make his autos give a stack as well, and I would make his passive activate once te enemy reaches the 3 stacks, no need for an auto. Q could be kept the same way in general, the heal you get when killing something with Q could get an AD scalling, the E could be activable without a wall, just, if Talon uses it that way, it will have a 10 seconds cooldown, bassically, give him back his old E (a Kat E with silence) and if he targets walls, he does the current E with the 2 sec CD

kog needs a midscope, he's the most outdated champ imo :
his passive is the worst passive in the entire game
his Q gives bonus AS but when you compare the numbers to some other adc you realise he has lower AS/level so it's actually pretty much the same as if it wasnt here but he had more AS (and while looking a a few adcs on the wiki to compare this i realise they did the same with jinx, they give her a lot of AS on Q but then she has one of the lowest AS/lvl in the game so the AS buff is way less impactful than it seems)
his W has the low uptime problem addressed by many midscope updates as you mentionned in the video
his E is a slow that is very bad early and you can just walk to the side and avoid it completly, making it useless until you have at least 3 points in it imo but you max it last (and many kog players me included just don't even level it until lvl 13
and his R is alright i think but synergise way better with his AP build than his normal adc (so does his E btw), maybe they should reduce cast time based on AS to make him not lose too much dps late since it's a spammable ability but you have anough AS to make it not worth it to use late game except to finish fleeing enemies

Rell has a great kit and I like it but it constantly feels like something is missing when I play her unless I am up against literal bots or take her into something like urf or ultimate spellbook.
I love Veigar and love playing him but there has to be another route than being allowed to sit under tower all laning phase and becoming unstoppable besides being up against a team with two assassins. I feel dirty.
    YUUMI.
Alternatively, Ashe or MF because I always pick first when against them when they play support and they always dominate lane for free, ESPECIALLY when played together.
I'd say Varus needs a VGU because his kit needs an adjustment and his model is a little... eh. On top of that his voicelines are from long before his lore update and no longer fit his character.
Vlad could use a VGU too. Unless you are an aggressive laner that can catch him after his puddle, you have no counterplay capabilities unless you outscale him so hard he doesn't matter. His voice lines are literally all puns and his model causes me almost as much physical pain as his puns.

I think your point about how long a champion can fight for was needed on characters like Ahri, Olaf, Sivir and Taliyah. But annie, Garen and Tryndamere dont fit the same fantasy at least in modern league and neither does syndra as the point behind these champions is often to take out a single contender quickly turning a 5vs5 into maybe a 4vs5 or a 3 vs 5 depending on who they catch their abilities. They don't need more consistency at least in my opinion.

Sona had been absolutely gutted before her mini rework so its hard to judge fairly, but overall I like it well enough. Sona has always been a fairly chill and reassuring support to play although she does of course still have her flashy and clutch moments. Up until they removed the auto reset on her auto-ability-auto combo I was on board with it.

2- Nauti (He was intended as a Jg-Top champ, I wish he came back there)
3- Mundo (The rework was mediocre, I think something should be done with his W)
Honorable mentions: Rumble, Yorick, Illaoi, Fizz, Talon, Vel'Koz, Zoe

I'd say teemo would like a mid-scope update. His W is barely an active ability and his E is just a second passive. Also with the amount of invisibility champions + items and the fact that people can just use oracles or pinks to disable his shrooms he sometimes isn't able to deal damage in teamfights, 1v1s, etc.
However, I'm not sure what exactly he needs to not suck 50% of the time.

I'm an ahri mid/singed top otp. I wasn't aware ahri needed a slight buff but I will gladly take it. Unfortunately, singeds win rate is being inflated drastically by OTPs like myself and I fear the nerfhammer rather than a much needed update. Dude has a 56% wr top and 55% mid...highest in both roles...fuck.

A champ who I think should get a Mid scope update is Blitzcrank, they definitely need a visual update too but I just want Riot to give them a new W. Why does it still slow them it's not like having the pitiful, quickly decaying move speed and average attack speed buff is so overpowered that they need to be a as slow as unmounted Rell for a bit.
You can't use W to run away because the slow at the end renders the distance you got from the speed up useless and you can't chase with it because modern champs are so mobile that they can just dash or hop over walls away from Blitzcrank, pretty much all W is good for is taking towers slightly faster but remember Blitzcrank is a support, you're not dealing much turret damage unless you chose Demolish for your first Resolve rune instead of the far superior (for Blitzcrank) Font of Life and that's considering you aren't running Glacial Augment on them in which case your Resolve runes, if you choose that tree, are most likely a combo of Conditioning/Bone Plating + Overgrowth/Unflinching.
The biggest problem in my opinion is that because of their severely outdated model and animations Riot can't really give them a new W, it's probably a difficult enough task to give Blitzcrank a new W that fits their character or synergizes with the rest of their kit let alone figure out how to animate it on Blitzcrank's 13 year old model without it looking out of place with the rest of their animations.

I think powercreep should be embraced as it's inevitable if you want fun and unique gameplay. Everyone pretends like they want underloaded kits like the "good old days" where every champ is like Nasus, Annie, or Garen and every ability description can be written in one line, but that sounds really boring.
I actually like that Riot is trying fresh mechanics like Akshan revive or Viego possession because they create both exciting gameplay and exciting eSports moments. They will figure out how to make these mechanics fair and reasonable to play against after the fact but they need to be in the hands of millions of players first.

As a Sona main I hate her mid scope. It only brough up her allredy existing problems even more.
Now she is even more of late game champion. She wasn't even a late game champion before. She used to spike when teamfights started.
Her laning got even worse even tho it was almost impossible to win lane before and the only reason why she is so bad in lane in the first place is because technically her abbilities can effect all 5 champions on the team since lvl 1.
She got extreamly tied to Seraph's even tho she is supposed to be better with stacking mana regen and thus runs out of mana in seconds (DURING THE ENTIRETY OF THE GAME) wich ends up very unfun for the player.
The mid scope made her much worse when behind.
She can't actually build Ardent Censer even tho she should be one of it's best users.
I've never had a game where lowering your ult's cd mattered tho that might just be the fault of high burst in the game but that's not an excuse for adding something else that works currently.
Still only picked when op with some out of the blue pick let alone picked up in pro play.
She feels underpowered despite always having high win rate. No matter how many nerfs recieved, she always climbs back up to 52%~
Gameplay doesn't match the theme. She is supposed to be a healing enchanter with a big, gamechanging ultimate, she deosn't have either but to be fair, healing supports don't exist anymore wich is another problem in itself.
She is under constant need of maintenance (model updates, vfx's updates, geamplay changes).
She is not fun anymore, at least for me personally.
