  • Learn why taking the PPM’s in consideration when watering plants is so important. Here’s how I do it, hopefully it helps some fellow gardeners out there. Much Love.

    1. Use 1/4 of the recommended dose (say: instead of 2.0, use 0.5 EC of nutrients)
    2. This EC is on top of the tapwater (for instance, if your tapwater is 0.5 EC, then add 0.5 EC in nutrients, for a total of 1.0 EC.
Much of the EC in tapwater is going to be calcium and magnesium.
For young plants, use nutrients that are strong in phosphorus and low in nitrogen. That will stimulate root growth from the phosphorus, and won't burn your plants with too much nitrogen.
10:00 The right pH is dependent on your medium.
Organic soil: start with 7.0 pH (best for bacteria)
Coco coir: 0.6 pH for most of the grow (keep the nutrient pH the same as the pH of the medium)
    Hydroponics: 5.5 to 5.8

bravo man great lesson i have been growing for 20 + i think 12 inside but ya all very important skills.. when i grew in super soil i never bothered with ph so when i started growing inside i quickly figured out i needed two learn about a few things... i dont bother with the ppm but i understand why people do....life is so interesting... hard two belive there are as many bacteria species in one hand full of soil than humans on earth since the begging of time... quite a huge amount... one handful... the soiless i have really began two enjoy i grow in coco coir and until the day i did i tried everything the inert growing mediums really need nutrient the peat moss and coco...it has taken a life time of growing two be comftorble growing..

When mixing nutrients into tap water. When done mixing your measurement of nutrients and the PPM IS TO HIGH, you can dilute your solution back down to proper PPM RANGE. IT SEEMS that most nutrient solutions mixed at manufacturer recommendations are to high in PPM is what i found.

So this is because the chart is to get the ratio correct. So first you add your nutes to get to the target range. This will give you a full dose of nutes. The ratio on you're bottle will be the same in your solution. Then you need to dilute this to your correct e.c. target. Then ph your solution and let it sit 15 mins. Recheck ppm and ph and you're good to go.

Been growing for 15 years and just switched to RDWC. Different rules apply.
Question. In maintaining a ppm of 600-800, is no problem until I add a biological for the roots. Are the ppms from good microbes be counted toward the total ppms? I'm thinking, No.

Thanks for explaining this before I murder my first plants. There is so much conflicting info on this subject. I'm about to begin a first grow. My tap is 178 ppm. My filtered water is 200. I like that my filter removes chlorine (good) but don't grasp why filtered ppm is higher.

    • @Wesmancan

That will go down as you use the filter more. It’s paper particle or char or whatever the filter is made of. I use distilled as I have an ro but it’s very wasteful.

  • @jamesb5688

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge but why is PPM used as a measure to feed plants when the nutrient content of the water is effectively unknown? If like your source has 550ppm and you’re aiming for 600ppm, how do you know you’ve got the right nutrients in your feed for that stage of the plant’s life? It’s not giving you much room to adjust and put in the inputs you actually need. Hope that makes sense, thenks

    Good evening Boss,
    Great video very informative.
In the past I’ve try and grow myself but didn’t get very far as I didn’t have the right space for it. I’m doing something different.
I want to ask a question that maybe be some what relevant to this video but I may have little to No knowledge at all.
you seem very knowledgeable in the subject.
Here’s what I’m wondering is there a way to lower the city/Tap water PPM to a complete Zero or low enough using some kind of solution?
    That will eliminate the calcium.
With out having a DI filter system.
For example and I’m not sure if it’s even the same thing because this is for plants but I remember using PH Up/Down to control the levels.
I hope my question makes sense.
Would appreciate any advice or feedback.
    Thank you.

You can store gallons of water but don't pre pH down or up it will not stay there it start to move around after few hours. You will end up wasting your pH up and down. Just learn your water and pH it when your watering.

Dude, I just noticed my stored (in plastic bottles) tap water has a PPM of 240/250. When it's fresh from the tap it's only 140/150. Have you heard what's doing that? I'm starting to think I'm dosing myself with 70PPM of microplastics on the reg.

Question for you, I am trying a new nutrient this time around on my grow. It is telling me to start with an EC value of 1.6 and they have a conversion chart switching it to PPM. But there are two different PPM values. There is a 500ppm TDS and 700pmm, which one do I go by? I am confused... See the conversion chart that I am speaking about here: floraflex.com/nutrients/conversion-chart/ Any help or inside that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. TIA!
