That 1988-89 team was a once in a life time group. They really deserved the NCAA national title. John Clougherty got the foul call wrong and it cost Seton Hall.
It wasn't and shouldn't be blamed solely on Clougherty though Duane! Seton Hall partly did themselves in during that OT! Once Morton hit that three to give them the 79-76 lead with a minute and a half left in the extra; if you remember, Seton Hall had consecutive possessions after that where they missed the front end of both 1and1's which would have clinched it and they left Michigan life! If the Hall makes those charity stripe shots, it makes Clougherty's whistle irrelevant
I was disappointed because I was pulling for Seton Hall! They were the Little Engine That Could, but in the end they shot themselves in the foot with those empty trips
Ever hear of the 'bonus'? Ya know, when a team commits more than a certain number of fouls in a half, the other team shoots free throws regardless of if they were in the act of shooting? Refs should put away the whistle? So if that dude just straight up clotheslined Robinson instead of bumping him, the ref shouldn't call anything because it was a 'clutch moment'? LOL...
@@KG-xt4oq Hey champ not just me sayin there was no foul, look at the comments below.. I watched that game live, I'm an impartial viewer. It's clearly not a foul. And yes I concede if the teams were in the bonus then shots given. From memory though it was OT so not sure they were in the bonus??
@@mattgude5810 The bonus carries into OT...you obviously didn't know the rules then or now, so you saying it was a foul is moot, even though you claim to be an 'impartial viewer' (LOL). You also said that refs shouldn't make calls in 'clutch moments' which is just dumb and makes your cry "It wasn't a foul!" that much weaker. And your "OtHeR pEoPlE aGrEe WiTh Me" mantra doesn't mean it's right; if so, then I can get a group of people to agree with me the sky is purple and that makes the sky purple, right? But yeah, keep being angry about a call made in a game 30+ years ago because that's what all 'impartial viewers' do...LOL!!!!
It wasn't a 2 shot foul. Just a one & one. Not sure how that helps Michigan since Robinson was a 50% free throw shooter. No one expected him to make one, let alone two. I strongly agree it was a bad call but if not called, then a wide open Terry Mills catches the pass for a shot he'd made many times before. As you say, the ref s/have eaten the whistle and let that scenario play out.
Could you explain how calling a bogus foul on a 50% free throw shooter for a one & one is advantageous for Michigan? Had the foul NOT been called (it shouldn't have been) then Terry Mills is left wide open for a shot he was very capable of making.

Some great names in those teams. Rumeal Robinson, Glen Rice, Ramon Ramos and Andrew Gaze
Loved that team. Foul call in the final was BS.
ANDREW GAZE THE GOAT!
Was and always be a phatom call!!!
Shore wish my pirates won that year :(
Possibly the worst phantom foul call in the history of the tournament.
🇦🇺 ANDREW GAZE #10 🇦🇺
ANDREWWWWWW GAZEEEEEE
Wasn't a foul and why were foul shots given? Definitely not in the act of shooting. Refs should put away the whistle in clutch moments of the game

Even the ref has admitted it was a bad call.

Great team.
No foul pirates robbed

Was Andrew Gaze good on that team? He must of been 40 at college haha
There's an ESPN 30 for 30 episode called Gaze, Ramos and the Pirates which is brilliant.
