I discovered minimalism as a new mom with too much on my plate... I remember hearing that the average American home contains roughly 300,000 material items. And the irony was that no one has enough time in their life to manage that much stuff I realized that all the excessive shopping, decorating, storing, and organizing was creating a life of anxiety, comparison, distraction, tension, and debt.
What I really wanted more of:
-more mental capacity to enjoy motherhood
-more energy to play and be outside
    -more rest and high-quality sleep
-more money in my savings account
-more conversations where I was really engaged and excited instead of exhausted
    -more traveling with my kids
    -more ideas
-more of my weird sense of humor
    -more balance groundedness and authenticity

Im a 50 y o male. Video rec by yt. Suffocating in clutter. As my family members have passed ive ended up with their stuff. Most recently Mom - which means a house full of all she kept - a lot. Its all way too long and the dynamics complex to fully understand. All i want is more free time and a very simple life. To wake up when my body says its ready (not an alarm clock), eat when im hungry (not because i better eat now), have the luxury of putting my head down for a power nap (instead of sitting there bobbleheading it). Its a process.

I got rid of my instant pot and in the beginning of my minimalist journey, and then soon after my air fryer broke. I had every intention of buying a new one, and I thought I would miss it but I do not. I have instead focused on cooking on my oven and grill and using my cast iron pans, and I am getting so much joy from using them.

I grew up in England and emigrated to the US a long time ago. I remember there was always a lot of thought into what we purchased whether it was clothing or household items because everything was expensive, which on looking back was a way of not getting overwhelmed by stuff. Then when I moved to the US everything was cheap, at that time I felt how great it was to be able to purchase an item when I thought I needed it, then several years later the reality of the abundance of stuff was more than overwhelming, I knew I wanted a much simpler life. Since then I have worked hard to minimize everything, clothing, household items, even food items. We eat simply, no processed foods, only extremely nutritious foods, because 8:57 of this I’ve minimized shopping time all around, giving me more time to exercise and spend time with family and friends, no longer a slave to the house. I’ve got time for interests and learning new things, something I’m really interested in is fermented foods, which I’ve been cultivating so I can pass on to friends and family. Life is more precious than material things. Eat well and laugh a lot. 😁

Thank you for devoting a section to imperfection. Minimalism and rigidity often go hand in hand, and there’s a lot of pressure to always make the “right” decision, the “right” purchase, etc. It’s important to remind ourselves that minimalism is a mindset that is intended to support us, not another thing to beat ourselves up over for not doing perfectly. I’ve given myself the space to apply minimalism only to the aspects of my life that are served by it. That has kept me from becoming anxious and puritanical about the whole thing.

It would be so easy if I lived in a hot weather country to have less clothes, in UK we need warm stuff jumpers/jeans/jackets/coats/scarves/hat/cooler clothes. I find it so hard to have less clothes in a cold very rarely hot country. Im slowly trying to sell clothes and books.

Kind of related to wants vs needs but I write down things I want to buy the following month then try to set aside a time one day to buy everything (normally a few random things). To me this is kind of like how in the past people used to go into town once a week or once a month to buy stuff. My current approach is helpful because buying at once means the packages arrive around the same time and I can process everything efficiently: breaking down boxes or reusing them for donation boxes, process returns in one errand, etc. it also removes some mental load from constantly wanting to not forget buying something. It goes on my list and I will evaluate if I still need it later.

So helpful as always! 😍 we live in a small house & we’ve been wanting to get pregnant with our third baby, but our house felt „too small“. But we don’t want to move into a bigger house, So since then I’ve started another round of decluttering but this time with the question „what am I decluttering for?“ so „decluttering to make space for baby nr 3“ made it a lot easier parting with things that I was holding onto where I realised „I won’t need that“ or even „I won’t even have time for that with three little ones“ . Kind of helped as well to let go of this fantasy self I’ve been holding onto, that I don’t even wanna be any more.
Long story short, super Video, again! Thank you that you keep sharing these with us 🥰 have a good day ✨🌻

YES. I've been doing this too lately, just thinking more about what I could make more space for in my life with less chaos and less to manage. it's so tangible in. my house/life what clutter does to our family culture and how present I am with the kids.

Dear Madi, yes, buying right away the right thing instead of what's cheaper has been a huge shift in my purchasing habits, allowing me automatically to have to save and wait for that item....
Also, knowing that for every not necessary thing, means moving away from my goal of keep being a stay at home mom..... and this alone is what keeps me going😊

I love these videos and have adopted many of your methods to keep our home enjoyable for everyone. The hardest part for me is the gifts. I’ve had the conversations even given lists to relatives for the kiddos and when I say they receive a ton of cheap stuff they won’t play with I mean a TON! Like we have a mid size SUV and it takes TWO car loads to bring it home from Christmas. It causes so much anxiety for all of us. The only solution we have found is to let each kid pick their favorite toy (or two) and put the rest in the basement. Then come spring whatever is left gets donated or sold. It’s still a lot to deal with but just a suggestion for anyone in a similar circumstance.

I grew up in a cluttered, almost hoarder home and now after getting married and moving out with my husband, our house is very minimalistic. I have clutter and get actually stressed from it. If things aren't in place I get the urge to out them back. God has helped me to not get obcessive with it and some days it does get more messy and thats OK, also pregnant with our 1, 7 weeks, so also keeping things minimal for baby. Having a small apartment makes it also easier to be minimal haha

I'm probably going to be an enabler, but you should hold out for linen light filtering curtains if you're concerned about the heat but don't want a dark room.
I switched from heavy cotton/viscose room darkening curtains to white IKEA Dytag curtains, and it was amazing how much heat was reflected away from the room. It blocks more heat than my blackout curtains (probably because it reflects rather than absorbs infrared light), and way better than a set of polyester light filtering curtains. It's even slightly better at blocking heat than my 1 inch polyester cellular shades.

    All of these sound amazing.
I love making wants and need lists and goals.
I think the first few years are the hardest for family members to accept a way of life of minimalism and not really wanting stuff. My mom and mom-in-law ask things I need from time to time because they know I won't enjoy them just giving me things if I won't be able to use them.
I had an instant pot when I got married 19 years ago, used it once three years later, and donated it when I realized that I probably wouldn't use it again. . .and I haven't.
I like that it is "What do I really want?" that you have asked here. That is the number one question everyone should ask on a regular basis. That and "What am I going to need to use regularly?"

Really love this. The idea of coming from abundance was so life changing for me. My husband said once “it’s ok to spend money on things, we deserve nice stuff” and I was just like 🤯 not sure where this is instilled into so many peoples minds, the idea that we must “save money” Anyhow, thanks for all your work!

I have a wish list of fair trade, organic and eco-conscious items that I would like to have in the home. They can be on there for awhile due to the cost which is relatively higher for my income and sometimes I might have to wait for them to go on sale which is fine. I also make a lot of products from scratch at home: food, cleaning and skin care items. My sister calls me cheap for doing so but for me it is living within my means and not buying things that I have the skills to make .

I love my instant pots! I have a large one for beans and soups when I don't have the time to cook on the stove, and a small one for making rice and soy or coconut yogurt.

I love my instant pot too, it really is the most used kitchen item I have. The only thing I have used the air fryer for is bacon....easy clean up (put the bacon grease in a jar and into the fridge then wash the basket) no splatter...but I could live without it. I don't think I can give up the instant pot though LOL

I have the same thoughts about the electric pressure cooker / multi-cooker. The only thing I consistently use it for is the sous vide function (I've had great success with sous vide meats and fish) and the pressure cooker function for bone broth (which, for over 20 years prior to getting one, I made just fine either on the stove top or in a slow cooker). I've been considering ditching the multi-cooker and just buying a sous vide wand that goes into a pot I already have and use.
I really enjoy cooking and baking ... I have a collection of kitchen gadgets that I'm whittling down. 95% of the time, I will reach for my high-quality chef's knife and cutting board over a "time-saving" gadget. Gadgets often have multiple parts that need assembled before using, and then disassembled, cleaned, and dried before storing ... and there they sit, waiting for the 5% of time that I actually might grab one of them.
It's a long process of removing the layers.

I always love your videos. Minimalism is such a PRACTICE and while I’ve been at it for years, your content is always helpful for me to stay on track and refreshing. Also I am not with the instant pot or air fryer either 😅 my “lack” of air fryer has been questioned an odd amount by people! Haha

Hey there! Our children are grown so we are in the place of life where we are looking at inheriting full households of things. We already have my husband’s parent’s things. We bought a smaller house. My parents literally have 3 houses. That amount of possessions caused me to, in a kind of panic, start getting rid of so much. Now I am calm enough to curate the life we are striving to build and create space for it to unfold. So much more chill and sane. Thanks for the perspective encouragement.

I have been a minimalist since 2019. I agree to write a list and wait to see if you really need or want items. Usually, I end up buying only 20 percent of the items on the list. I also use this with children Christmas List. I have them give me a list months in advance. Every so often, I ask them again what they want. The items they ask for thats a repeat are the items we usually buy :)

I am 40 years young, and I am awed at how wise and confident you are. To live your truth with such fervor and sweetness is a wonderful gift. With my gained wisdom, the mother of four beautiful girls, I now only give my time and attention to those I find are worth my time and attention. You are one of them. Can I be you when I grow up? I have too many thoughts and questions now after watching this:
    1) I have never understood journaling, with four kids I never have time to sit and write without someone "helping" or interrupting, but the wants/needs list suggested exercise might be just what I need to stop me from buying clothing and jewelry off second hand platforms. Post-partum with #4 at 39 has been the hardest to get strong and healthy again. As my body changes or my emotions about my body fluctuate, I find shopping for the potential of feeling beautiful to help feel more in control. Especially since working out is a daily challenge. Did I mention we live in an RV while my husband takes contracts as an RN? Even in this tiny space, I have managed to acrue too much. Again. And most of it doesn't work for my body or my life. I am gonna re-watch your journal video again and put those emotions into an action to strengthen my patience and discipline.
    2) HOW are you NOT using your AC? I just recently cut off all my hair because I was so hot. Yay to post partum hormones. Really, how do you make it manageable and stay sane, especially while cleaning and cooking? Even with short hair, I couldn't imagine going without the AC.
    3) Please share how you have your fiddle leaf fig thriving? Mine is more like a fickle leaf fig, almost as persnickety as my orchids. Definitely not as big as yours.
    4) Activated charcoal has SO many uses, doesn't it? I use it with my toothpaste, my face/body/scalp for a deep clean, and for deodorant as well. Love to support small, clean companies, so thanks for sharing.
    5) Thanks again for the Dandyblend suggestion. I can't tolerate lots of coffee like I used to and it really is a great substitute. I give myself one cup of coffee every morning. When I get halfway from finishing I make a iced hybrid of my coffee with the Dandyblend. Sometimes I will add a mushroom coffee to it, but the Chai vibes aren't always my thing. Maybe in another month or two. I don't think I could give up coffee completely but now I feel healthier limiting to what I have. And it was a nice lesson to my girls that dandelions aren't the weeds people now believe them to be. We now hold them in higher regard and plan to make dandelion salve later this year as a school project.
Thanks for supporting us out there trying to be the change we need in this world. Sometimes it's a lonely walk. We need you to help share. ❤
