We use to hunt fox in Texas at night. The dogs would run them for hours, when the gray fox tired from running he would go up a tree just like a cat. The hunt was over. Red fox would do the same but they preferred holes in the ground. We would not kill the fox, it was the chase that mattered. It was a lot of fun to sit and listen to them run.
I had a friend (now deceased) who owned a pack of Walkers. He ran them at night, and the music of the hounds was beautiful. The hounds never caught the fox; in fact, some of the hounds run all their lives and never actually see a fox. This is more properly fox "running", not "hunting", since the trailing and the music is the point.

I'll give that book a look sometime. I'm not suggesting it would be a good thing to bring back fox hunting but, whilst it's quite shocking for some to witness, it really doesn't seem any more unnatural to me than eating meat. Digging out a fox that went to ground is completely wrong. We do not practice that in our hunt and would ban anyone who did. I have, actually, never seen a kill. We see many fox, but have never had, or frankly, want a kill. This is cherry picking film footage of the worst violators. Mounted fox hunting is a social event and tradition that strives to protect open space, farmland preservation and health and safety for horse and rider. It also provides for a local economy of grain stores, vets, farriers, grooms and barn owners. What do the anties do for the community other than increase the policing cost?
Healthy for horse and rider? Most of You have not even the time for horseback riding. Most of You are forcing their horses by generating enormous pain into submission. You are fond of everything, which is causing pain to Your horses, but afraid of daily labour. Going for what You call riding 3 times a week for 1 or 2 hours cannot be called riding. In this way You will never get the skill for cross country events. You will not even get the skill to sit on a horse in a barn. The slaughter houses are full of unrideable horses in their best age, who have to pass to make the box free for the next candidate going to be abused.
