Can't believe the level of ignorance in this comment section. I can't believe some people seriously think the foxes are harmless! Admittedly they do have different personalities and there are scavengers and there are killers but I've seen first hand, year in year out, the torrent of foxes flooding to the lambing fields for an easy meal. On a friends farm a constant fox patrol through the night would be very welcome as at least 1 or 2 lambs get snatched up every night of the lambing with very clear signs of fox predation.

Mike, Gassing isn't allowed and it is far more humane to use terriers for fox control, especially one dog on one fox. Lamb predation is common in so many areas but in Scotland more so.

Yes, I have spent time there. I grew up working on cattle/sheep ranches in the Western US. I killed a fair share of coyotes, a couple of mountain lions(who decided to hunt together, bad news) and a couple of old bears who couldn't hunt anymore. However, I never personally witnessed a single predator take a cow or sheep. I am certain that there has been and will be predation of domestic livestock, but the problem is humans believing they own and are entitled to every square inch of this planet and continue to encroach and destroy wildlife habitat. We did lose some animals, but the cause of death can be difficult to determine. We also had wonderful dogs that were great at protecting the herds. I know Scotland is/was famous for their sheep herding dogs, but if you are losing livestock, perhaps try a couple of LGD dogs, that have been successfully protecting livestock for centuries. There are so many good breeds out there and they can take care of any tiny little Scotish foxes.
