  • Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com - Bloodwood is one of my favorite red woods. Holds color very well and has a great ring to it.

    I also love the smell the wood emits when you saw it. The bad thing everything turns red around the shop. I also like cedar smell.

    I can vouch for this wood! My guitar is composed almost entirely of bloodwood (and some alder). It sounds (and looks) fantastic.

    I picked up a board of bloodwood and resawed it to make fretboards. 100% agree with the tap tone being bright, loud, and on the treble side. The sustain of the resonance is nice and long, too! I'm excited to put it on this solid piece of Jatoba I grabbed for necks 😁.

    These wood feature videos are my favorite on your channel. Please make videos about Baked/Roasted Maple and Goncalo Alves, thanks

    What do you think about bloodwood for fretboards? I got wenge and bubinga as other options for my next bass build...

    How would you compare the brightness to that of maple? I actually have a stratocaster neck made of solid bloodwood with a ebony fretboard. It's pretty dense. I'm wondering if partnering it up with a warm body maybe mahogany would balance the brightness? Maybe a chambered body even?

      if you go with an ash body it will be pretty bright. Mahogany, Alder, Swamp ash would help balance a tad.

    I've worked with bloodwood before, but want to try and make a electric bass body out of it. Would you suggest making the neck or fret board out of another wood, or would bloodwood, be ok throughout?

    • @bigdguitars
      @bigdguitars  8 років тому +1

      fretboard is ok, and guitar top is ok. its hard but brittle at times for a neck. it does split at times.

      @@DracDrakens did you ever complete this build? I'm working on several right now and on two of them I'm debating between Bloodwood and Padauk in a multi-laminate neck and between the bookmatched top and two piece body. One body, and the center of the neck, will be really nice Mahogany, the other body, and center of the neck, will be Korina (White Limba). Possibly will use the Bloodwood for fretboard inlay, and I'll use either a wood or metal that contrasts the fretboard to enhance the Bloodwood

      @@Metalbass10000 I ended up going with Jatoba (Brazilian cherry) with a Tigerwood top but never got around to finishing it.

    Have you had any experience or know much about building a guitar body with sequoia redwood , I have some massive logs from 120 year old tree that fell at a relatives place. I love the natural red and it will look amazing with the paduouk neck i have.

      aidan stanley I have used redwood and cypress and cedar. They have a lot of resin and it fills blades and sand paper. Really nice wood but harder to work with then you would think.

      Cool! Thanks for getting back to me.
      Would you see any problem with gluing two pieces end to end to lengthen the body blank, the logs arent quite long enough. It's not ideal I know, but from what i hear some glues are stronger than the woods themselves. the only other way i can think of would be to have the grain perpendicular instead of parallel, which could create more headaches

    ITS kind of brittle and it has knots so I think it should be bent wet ? tap tone is the best one thing not said was that it dosent need the grain filling that paduc dose and it acts just like ebony
