I'm a stringer, and rarely even spin poi balls, and yet I also get comments about playing with my balls...lol instant block. 🤷‍♂️
That being said, congrats on 100k man! My current goal is 10k on my Tiktok, and that is not happening fast. About a year and a half of posting has got me to just over 3600, which is still awesome for me. I can't imagine what hitting 100k is like. You definitely deserve it man! All your hard work really shows. 🥳🥳

Thank you so much! The way I got here is the same advice I'd give you: do research on how discovery works on the platform of your choice. How does the algorithm select videos to show the audience? What are some things you can do to improve your performance there? My channel really began to take off when I learned about keyword targeting on UA-cam. Look up professionals who create content professionally for TT, see what they recommend, and apply it to your own work. And have patience! This takes time and virality doesn't built as stable an audience as you might think or hope.

Congrats, Drex! And this was a great Q&A! Thanks to you, and other flow artists I admire, I know what kind of flow artist I want to be, and I'm on the road to get there. We're all really grateful for you!
As for the pseudoscience and gatekeeping in the community, I definitely would want more thoughts on that. That hits a nerve for me in 2 ways. The former because I'm a scientist and I've also heard some pretty alarming things from other artists. And the latter because I'm a person of color in a seemingly very white community.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you dug this one. There are certainly a lot of horror stories out there...and some aspects of the Flow Community as it exists right now that I think we still have yet to really reckon with. I've got a couple scripts that have been sitting around in different forms for the better part of a year, so I could definitely be talked into greenlighting one of them. In the immediate scheme of things, there are some wonderful pockets of the community that are very supportive and uplifting to non-White Flow Artists. I'd strongly recommend checking out the BIPOC Flow Artistry channel on Instagram if you're not already familiar with it: instagram.com/bipocflowartistry/

PS-- Sorry, Drex, but did you link to that book, Mastery? I'm sorry-- I'm your new legally blind follower, and I didn't see it. I'd like to get the audiobook-- who was the author, please? And FWIW, I have been doing Duolingo courses now EVERY SINGLE FREAKING day now for over 1882 days now! I started years ago, German, to hone my skills since my Mom was from Germany. Even as she lay in the ICU dying, I kept at it. It felt aggravating to have to do it every day, but I did NOT want to lose my 'streak' and Mom was SO proud, and my husband too-- so I kept at it. Even if it was just one quick short 3 minute lesson, I did it every day! And now most days I look forward to it. Now I'm trying to learn the Handpan Drum as well as learning how to flow, especially since I just discovered this amazing and beautiful art! Since I can't see well, anything that is lit up grabs my attention. Your poi spinning was the first videos I had ever seen, and was instantly interested and hooked. Thanks, Drex!

Hi Drex, great video! I loved learning about you. I bet you'd be great at trying a new musical instrument-- check out what a "handpan drum" is. It looks like a UFO and sounds like a kettle drum, you play with your hands only, no mallets. It's beautiful. Something else I'm trying to learn along with Flow Arts, to help me get through my grief over the loss of my Mom.

What music videos have shown hooping and poi spinnning. I think I saw poi being spun by two dancers in the White Punks On Dope song during a Tubes concert in the late 70s in the second half when backing singers came on stage.

Do you still actively work on learning new tricks, and if so where do you find them/ways to learn them, and what are your tips for targeted practice for flow and choreography to not fall into a pattern of flowing without really working on what needs to be done? I've been learning poi for almost 6 years now and ever since I transitioned away from focusing on tricks and more to polishing and learning to flow and choreograph things, I feel that I've found myself plateauing in ways that stem from a lack of directed practice. Congrats on 100k!
