Welcome to Part 2 of my How to Ride a Motorcycle series. For Parts 1 & 3, click the links below:
Part 1 - The Basics - • How to Ride a Motorcyc...
Part 3 - Shift Gears - • How to Shift Gears on ...
In Part 1, The Basics, you learned how to start the motorcycle and get it moving for the first time. In this video, I'll teach you the basics of turning, both at slower speeds and at faster speeds.
When you learn to ride a motorcycle, you'll become aware that the bike behaves differently at different speeds. Below about 15mph, physically turning the steering column in the direction you want to go will make you go that way (turn it left to go left, right to go right).
However, above 15mph, you will do the opposite. To turn left, you will PRESS on the left handle bar (momentarily turning the wheel to the right), causing the bike to lean to the left and for the bike to go left. To turn right, you will PRESS on the right handle bar (momentarily turning the wheel to the left), causing the bike to lean to the right and for the bike to go right.
Be sure to watch the video for a great lesson on how to learn these techniques.

They way they taught steering in Victoria (Australia) is to look where you want to go and your body will naturally follow, leaning the bike slightly. This really simplifies things and teaches you to also look ahead/where you are about to turn.
+youtubkeeper yeah american bike videos are confusing af when you learn everything the DECA way
correct, but turn left at high speed and turn the bars left and see what happens.
in quebec we take 16 hours of closed track, 6 hours of theory class and another 10 of road classes thats not including the theory and closed/open track exams we take... at least we know how to ride over here tho
in India the system is so messed up that you get a licence with near zero knowledge of riding.
which means that most people"learn" after they get on the road. it's the same with cars as well.
I thought it was a natural instinct to look where you want to go. Even in a car.
I dont know if it just me or not, but to me your voice sounded like a captain of an airplane announcing stuff over the loudspeaker.
Hello everybody this is your captain speaking. We're looking at decent parking conditions, about 85-98% chance of finding a spot. Ahhh, sunny in the day and dark at night.
Lol yea it's his helmet mic. Prepare for take off
LMAOOOOOO
Thank you for putting this video up. I'd been struggling with consistently cornering for the past couple of days and it's been scary not really knowing all the mechanics of how it works. This totally cracked the mystery for it, and I just had my best ride yet. Thank you!
Ride safe. I had the same experience.
I bought my first bike last night and today I need to pick it up from dealership. I have 0 experience with motorcycles but I know how to shift and balance. This video was everything as I spent the entire evening watching videos and this one was the most helpful when it came to turning and what counterweight is and what counter steering is. Thank you so much!
You make it home?
@@uniquemalik6278 it was a year ago I guarantee he did 😭
@@uniquemalik6278 he’s probally a pro driver now 😭
@@freeaccount976 who knows lol he never updated us 😅
Thank you. Although I have about over 40 thousand miles of riding and know how to counterweight and countersteer instinctively, I NEVER DID UNDERSTAND WHEN COUNTLESS OTHERS TRIED TO EXPLAIN. Thanks again!!
I believe this same principal of pressing the opposite direction works the same way on a mountain bike or any type of bicycle. When I think about it you don't physically turn the steering column on the bicycle either at high speeds. Just a lean combined with a press. I don't ride motorcycles YET but I'm looking into my MSF course and gathering all the knowledge I can before I go in blindly. Great video, by the way!
Incredibly well made and thought out video, thank you very much for thoroughly explaining steering, counterweight, and counter-steering. While it may not be apparent, your teachings may save a life one day, if it hasn't already.
Nice vid, man. I've only been riding for three years now, but I can't tell you how many videos like this I absorbed like a sponge, in the early days. Very helpful! Your comments on physics, though, are unique among the vids that at least I've seen. Great explanation on push left - lean left - go left.
After watching numerous vids about counter-steering, this is the first vid where I actually finally understood it. Thank you!!
Thank you. Although I have about over 40 thousand miles of riding and know how to counterweight and countersteer instinctively, I NEVER DID
UNDERSTAND WHEN COUNTLESS OTHERS TRIED TO EXPLAIN. Thanks again!! YOUR explaination is REALLY SIMPLE TO GRASP FOR THE FIRST TIME
Here in 2020. LOVE U MOTONOSITY. Can’t believe how much you’ve grown
Best example & explanation I've seen on youtube. Especially because you're demonstrating counter steering on a long consistent corner & clearly show continued counter steering throughout the turn.
this is the only video I have seen that actually explains the topic of countersteering. I have seen professional training videos, and your's is the only one. thanks bro.
Thank you sir for this movie..! I failed my exam last Wednesday because of not using properly Counterweight technique... Now I'm fully ready for this. I failed on "8" , I was so dissapointed at myself because it is one of the easiest things to do on exam :(
Thank you again, Greetings from Poland, wish me luck this Wednesday ! :)
I took an MSF course a few months ago and I had no idea what I was doing with pressing on the handle bars and I still passed the course, but now I finally understand what it all meant. I'm getting a bike soon so I can't wait to practice it better, thanks a lot!
One the simplest explanations of counter steering I’ve watched, thank you!
I know this is a super old vid but just bought my 1st bike, learning. Bro u have some of the best how to ride vids on you tube. Way u explain it is excellent!! Out of all the beginner vids yours has been the best & helped me the most. Old vid or not, that need will never change!! lol!!! Safe Riding!!!
Thank you for making videos that a clean and profanity free. While I enjoy other vloggers who may use colorful language from time to time, you can't always listen to their vids in mixed company. So again, I say thank you.
I remember my riding lessons. My instructor showed me all of that, and I was fascinated how it worked, its actually fun to do, and it has saved me on a tighter than expected turn a few times.
The thing that taught me the most on how to lean a motorcycle was to ride a bicycle with heavy, large diameter tires (such as a beach-cruiser) really fast & just try to swerve back & forth like he did in this video...like he said, it's hard to explain & to understand counter-steering, but IT IS EASY to do once you FEEL the feeling of it.
Hey we were all noobs at some point. Its good that there are videos like this out there by Motonosity and others to show new riders that steering a moving bike is not hard to do.
Great tutorial! I bought my first bike some 30 years ago. I read an article about this back then and tested it irl. This have saved me several times. Easy once you know how it actually works,, but if you don't - you'll end in the ditch if the street turns but you don't.... I sent a link to this video to my son who is about to start to drive a motorcycle, a Ducati (what elsel) btw.
Thank you sir ! Had my first day of motorcycle safety course today and I couldn’t wrap my mind around the push left go left concept
I'm about to purchase my first bike, watching your video has made me more comfortable about turning. Awesome video man, explained a lot! I'm in San Antonio, maybe I'll catch up with you sometime. Again thanks.
it seems like countersteering is one of those things you just need to go do, explaining it seems kinda hard
Thank you so much ! I have been having trouble with cornering but this makes the difference low vs high speed so much more clear !!!
The way you explained why the bike leans in the opposite direction with your hands is the best answer I found from you tube
As a new rider that got his bike before his permit or the safety schooling. Just wanted to say thanks for your video. I think its the first time a video or person made the whole counter steering make sense. I think it may have to do with how you held your hands on the bars or your hand and arm example, or all the above. So thanks.
This is the best video on basic steering I have ever seen. Congrats my friend this will help new riders for sure.
Thanks!
counter-steering is the key of fast turning at higher speed. this technique is something that you "just do" without thinking about it while riding a bike and most riders only discover it after someone tells them what they actually are doing. try to let the hands of the steering and try leaning with the body weight and u'll see what i mean by it's "almost" impossible to change direction without counter steering at speeds above some 20-25km/h
Something i think you should have mentioned in the video is how sensitive this technique is, if you force a strong pressure on the handle bar u gonna begin a very sharp lean and turn brutally (or even crash if ur not prepared)
Dead right...it just comes naturally. But when you realise how it works you start to experiment.I had a Tuono 1000R and it was great to lean on those wide bars on a bend ,apply some extra throttle on the exit and get a wonderful sense of control.I actually know a rider who told me he "used to steer normally but now I turn the bars the opposite way!"
If you really want to know about riding and cornering get "A Twist of the Wrist" by Keith Code. It gives a detailed explanation of cornering, countersteering, body positioning, and common errors riders make. You can find excerpts of the video, including countersteering, on UA-cam.
Happy riding.
+Ryan W. I found the full version of "A Twist of the Wrist 2" on UA-cam at watch?v=KVWLIfChUwg...
Most useful counterweight and counter steering video I have come across. Thanks.
what you're saying makes sense to me. It's basically like riding a bike at low speed, then literally swap how you steer on a bike at high speeds to turn (but not as crazy as far as the angles). This blew my mind it's done this way as I had no idea lol.
This video is 7 years old but im thankful 🙏 that you made it since I'm planning on riding a bike myself once I get out of high school
Excellent easy to understand video which clearly explains how to turn at different speeds. If you are new to riding a motorcycle, watch this video!
I finally get it! the countersteering has always confused me! Thank you
You have explained countersteering better than 5 other vloggers. And after seeing it a few times, I see that it's almost like drifting.
Oh my god you just help me realize. Its like freakin drifting why didnt i see this before. Thanks man
great video.. i've yet to do the course but i'm doing it in two weeks.. and by the sounds of things they don't explain it too well.. glad you showed me.
Are you in a ghost town? There is nobody anywhere.
footba11fan41ife Corporate parking lot on a weekend.
+Motonosity Does this work with a moped/scooter too?
+Tricky_Turtwig yes
+Tricky_Turtwig Any wheels in line vehicle. Bicycle, moped, motorcycle etc...and you do it instinctively
+Tricky_Turtwig . We can do counterstering from just 25 km/h and up .
Very simple and educative way to show to tne newbies.
Many thanks and pleasurable rides!
Thank you very much for this video. I just took my motorcycle beginners course and I failed the riding portion. Thank you for I understand it much more thanks to you.
This is one of the greatest and simplest videos I've ever seene in about learning some techniques on motorcycles !
thanks
Thank you! I'm taking a motorcycle safety course and struggling with this maneuver, especially since we were doing 10-15mph in a 100 foot course, plus I was having trouble keeping the throttle at a steady rate on that bike.
try it while going in a straight line. just push on the left hand bar and the bike will start to go left
I know a motorcycle and a bicycle are two different balll games. But i saw this yesterday and tried it on my bicycle as i was commuting to work. This morning and now i completely understand why it works this way
With this video you teached me how to properly ride a bike i just wanna thank you a lot and keep your content like this i really enjoy it!!
its funny i was out riding my bike(bicycle) and never even realized this was going on. Just kinda comes natural.
You turn a bicycle complete different tho
Exactly. riding my mountain bike 8-22 miles 5 days a week for years, leaning into curves on my motorcycle just comes naturally. It is not completely different. Theres an obvious weight difference and throttle vs peddling or coasting but you use the same skills to keep your balance.
Whoa! So when i ride my mountain bike at high speeds - i am not actually turning my bars left to go left?? 😲 brain is now mashed!!
One of the best counter steering videos on the Tube, thanks👍🏽
Excellent video . Simple and clear examples and narrative .
The lean still scares me. I think I'm just going to power slide on my knee with a bike on me. How do I overcome that feeling?
***** Alright. I'll be one of those people who keep the tag on their clothes, buy all Nike clothing, and keep saying "Just Do It."
***** Oh sorry, I wasn't saying it in a negative manner. I'm not sure how to describe the attitude, but it wasn't meant to be negative =P
***** Do many experienced bikers fell when they started to learn leaning? I don't want to crash the bike, even if it's a cheap one.
Ilias Joels What I have found that works best, is to always be at your limits, but still be comfortable, and always try to improve on your riding and take note of the errors you make, and correct them. This has worked very well for me, and it has allowed me to gain excellent riding experience and I am very comfortable riding a bike at it's limits. Just my 2 cents...
Spencer Mitchell
Thanks man!
Nice video. You did a awesome job explaining!!! This helped me brushing my skills I have to retake my test Wed.I failed Sun. 6 passed 6 failed but they let you retake it after 48 hours. I just went outside the box and wasn't going quiet fast enough so I know what I need to do. I'm new and know I need tons of practice even upon completion of the MSF/BRC. Aside from that Motorcycling is a life long learning experience. I do feel confident and semi relaxed. Again TY for this video you made total sense and illustrated what I needed!
In the MSF course, our instructors asked us if we have been on a bicycle. Then basically told us to not even think of counter steering at all. It's a natural thing. The more you think about it, the more you are likely to screw up.
Man this is a cool series for myself a beginner, thanks!
great counter-steering demo. so hard to explain and you did it so well.
only thing i'd add that I learned after a bunch of riding was that pushing down on the clip-ons is less effective than pushing forward. meaning that you want push on the same axis that the bars rotate. (gah I can't explain it in words.... i'm sure all the riders know what I mean heh)
xskivvissx
Pushing down is not JUST "less effective", it's almost wholly ineffective. You are wasting your effort for no result.
You explained and showed the concepts well! Thank you!
Thanks this helps me alot. I'm not so scared to turn anymore because i have my training/riding classes in like a week or so
Your videos helped me get more comfortable with my sv, just picked up a drift hd and hope to not be a completely boring motovlogger lol
That was the most clear video Ive ever seen man thanks!
Looking into the turns is something you really have to practice and I mean ALOT. It is NOTHING like driving a car
Here's what many people fail to mention when explaining why counter-steering works like it does: Sit on your bike and press the left handlebar forward and slightly lean the bike left. Now look at the alignment of the frame relative to the front wheel. The frame is now just slightly angled to the left. THAT is why when you push the left handlebar forward, the bike veers left. You're not turning the front wheel to turn the direction of the bike, since that's pretty much a physical impossibility due to the gyro effect of the rotating mass. You're redirecting the REAR wheel's path to the left via the connection to the frame, which is connected to the front wheel on a hinge, so the bike goes left. You are applying force to the handlebars , which are connected directly to the front wheel, but you're not turning the front wheel. You're changing the angle of the rear wheel relative to the front wheel via the frame. And that's why counter-steering works the way it does.
Excellent explanation of the delta in mechanics based on speed.
Makes good sense.
That U-turn could be tighter if you look through the turn, look where you want to go. Use more counterweight, it's almost like riding a supermotard in the turns. So when you want to go right, handlebar to the right, straighten your leftarm and counterweight to the left. Keep it up!
For most sports bike 12 MPH is the minimum for counter steer or counterweight. Good video, I have a MSF course that is on base and can use. I am thinking about doing a couple of videos on it.
Thank for this video. I could not for the life of me understand what the instructor was trying to explain. Now i l ow for the next time I go through the class.
Good explanation. After taking the MSF course I felt I was missing something on the press thing.
Really appreciate your time to show us.
So easy to understand. Thank you man. New rider here
The gyroscopic effect on the turning wheels is what causes the motorcycle to lean and thus turn when you counter weight. If you recall high school physics, the movement of a rotating wheel is 90 degrees around the wheel from where the force is applied. If you press forward on the right handlebar it's like applying force to the right on the back of the front wheel, causing the top (90 deg) of the wheel to move or lean to the right. It is not effective at low speeds since the wheels are not turning fast enough for gyroscopic effect to occur so you need to steer into the turn and counter weight in a slow speed turn.
Finally someone who explains steering at slow speed without instantly jumping to counter steering.
I've noticed the more I think about things the worse I do. Was the same when I was learning a bike. Had to fall a few times but I eventually figured it out without actively thinking about it. Just riding around. Reasons why my first motorcycle is gonna be a real cheap one. Cause I know imma fall till I figure it out.
The best way to show what you're talking about is to watch a video like Speedway Grand Prix of Poland ... great racing and counter-steering in an exaggerated way. Watch some of the MotoGP, SBK, BSB or AMA racing in slow motion ... the same thing happens, of course.
Finally, an explanation that actually makes sense!!
thanks for that clarification i just took that class and it didnt make sense because we were going very slow and we asked the instructors but they would say the same thing over and over
This is the only video that actually made me understand this Thanks bro!
Best explanation of this I have seen.
Coming back after 6 years....how r the peeps doing
This was very helpful, thank you. I was reading the permit book and I just couldn't understand what the hell they meant by press on the handle bar. They didn't explain it at all. It makes sense, after it's been explained.
I get really nervous when cornering as leaning feels extremely unsafe for me
Excellent guide, and great explanations. Keep it up!!
what a wonderful job of explainng this .. thank you!!!
Simple concept -
Turn/drift towards left - Push on the left handle.
Turn/drift right - Push on the right handle bar.
Thinking about the wheel direction will only confuse you. (Except at that magical speed where you must turn left to go left and turn right to go right....)
This is the best explanation I ever seen on youtube 👌👍 Just what I need to practice on low speed for balance and higher speed slalom driving in cones for my test if one month 💪😎
Very understandable. Thanks. One question. Which direction are you actually pushing? Down or forward. I seem to push at a 45 degree angle which of course is a bit of both. Almost all the counter steering videos I've seen simply say push left or right. I believe it's a confusing point for beginners.
Best example yet simpel to remember thanks.
I got a bike license here in Texas and haven’t ever actually learned to counterweight maybe it was intuitive during the riding exams, but now that I’m getting a bike I’m nervous
Well thats funny cause i was seeing the Moto GP, last sunday, and i was confused because they were steering left, for a breef moment, to approach a right turn and i was like WTF !!??
And remember, it's 'press forward', not down.. lol
Very clear lesson, thanks
I recommend watching Twist of the wrist by Keith code or even read the book - same title., There is a lot of details. Thanks to that movie I have learned how to drag a knee without going to the track or motorcycle school
I try to picture the bike on a straight z-axis, and you want to go like an aircraft to turn left, how? How does an airplane do it? Roll left and lift, which is more effective and natural than just yaw (steering left). How do you roll left? Well if you picture your bike to be going down a perfectly round tunnel so the top of your head is touching the top of the tunnel and the bottom of the wheels are touching the bottom of the tunnel, naturally the wheels must shift to the right to cause the vehicle to roll its upper body to the left. Then open the throttle a little and viola .. you're turning naturally, without having to excessively yaw left.
Now also weighting the inside peg and pushing with your outside thigh into the tank and keeping your arms and hand loose/relaxed on the bars.
Is it not that at even higher speeds you initiate the turn with a counter steer but after you are into the lean the wheel is pointing in the direction of the corner? The countersteer is to start the lean but once leaning you are actually steering to the right if you are going right but barely since you are also leaning. You are not constantly actively steering left when going right...just to initiate the turn. Not pissing on anyone here but I think it works like this.
It is also important to distinguish the steering torque necessary to initiate the lean required for a given turn from the sustained steering torque and steering angle necessary to maintain a constant radius and lean angle until it is time to exit the turn.
The initial steer torque and angle are both opposite the desired turn direction. The sustained steer angle is in the same direction as the turn.
From Wikipedia article on countersteering. Shows nice images as well. Was very clear and logical to me.
VlotoMog 100% correct for normal roads and race tracks. You only use counter steering TO LEAN THE BIKE which moves the weight to the side of the corner, and then you HAVE TO STEER IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO GO, which also prevents you from falling on the ground - OR, if you don't steer in the direction of the corner, you have to keep the front wheel in the air most of the time and use your engine power to drift (speedway for example).
Agreed! XD
VlotoMog True - but (not to complicate matters) it should be pointed out that, once in a turn, any additional adjustment required while in the turn will also require more counter steering. For instance in a decreasing radius curve.. to tighten the arc/corner/lean will require another momentary pressing on the side of the bar inside the turn.
Bravo! Extremely helpful for me. Thanks!
Many motorcyclists call this maneuver “counter steering,” though this name is somewhat inaccurate as you won’t be turning the handlebars of your bike much at all. As you go into the turn, push on the bike with half of your body on the outside of the turn. For example, in a right turn, you would push on your motorcycle with your left buttock and leg, which will cause your bike to lean into the turn. It may also help you to apply pressure to the inside handlebar in a downward fashion. You won’t actually be using your handlebars to steer, only to help distribute your weight as you lean into the turn.
is it true? as i know at high speed if you steer your handlebar suddenly your bike will crash.
if you want to turn left, PULL on the right handle bar instead of PUSHING on the left handle bar, then lean into the turn. it much easier and natural way of doing it.
when you start learning you'll eventually start pulling, easier to stay balanced
Seems very similar to what Id do on a bicycle to turn. Will that make it easier for me as a beginner?
I had to learn how to counter steer out of the msf course due to the amount of people in the class i never got to use counter steering it was a double booked class in december like 16 people
You leaned counter steering the first moment you rode a bicycle. From that very day you have been countersteering any bike at any speed.
very well explained
thanks
OMG it works!!!!! but i have a question... how much do i have to press to turn? i mean how long? do i have to turn to the right direction at some moment? or i just have to lean more and more till i take the turn? (i mean in a tigher turn)
Thanks! Very helpful.
thank you for the advice question when you're in a turn in your lane in how do you come out of the lean when the road straightens out sorry I'm going to Ryder
