    Welcome to Part 2 of my How to Ride a Motorcycle series. For Parts 1 & 3, click the links below:
    Part 1 - The Basics - • How to Ride a Motorcyc...
    Part 3 - Shift Gears - • How to Shift Gears on ...
    In Part 1, The Basics, you learned how to start the motorcycle and get it moving for the first time. In this video, I'll teach you the basics of turning, both at slower speeds and at faster speeds.
    When you learn to ride a motorcycle, you'll become aware that the bike behaves differently at different speeds. Below about 15mph, physically turning the steering column in the direction you want to go will make you go that way (turn it left to go left, right to go right).
    However, above 15mph, you will do the opposite. To turn left, you will PRESS on the left handle bar (momentarily turning the wheel to the right), causing the bike to lean to the left and for the bike to go left. To turn right, you will PRESS on the right handle bar (momentarily turning the wheel to the left), causing the bike to lean to the right and for the bike to go right.
    Be sure to watch the video for a great lesson on how to learn these techniques.

    The thing that taught me the most on how to lean a motorcycle was to ride a bicycle with heavy, large diameter tires (such as a beach-cruiser) really fast & just try to swerve back & forth like he did in this video...like he said, it's hard to explain & to understand counter-steering, but IT IS EASY to do once you FEEL the feeling of it.

    As a new rider that got his bike before his permit or the safety schooling. Just wanted to say thanks for your video. I think its the first time a video or person made the whole counter steering make sense. I think it may have to do with how you held your hands on the bars or your hand and arm example, or all the above. So thanks.

    It's the same on a bicycle, people just don't notice because a bicycle is "second nature". Another reason that the wheel needs to turn slightly the opposite direction of lean is to prevent the front edge of the tire from plowing.

    Very understandable. Thanks. One question. Which direction are you actually pushing? Down or forward. I seem to push at a 45 degree angle which of course is a bit of both. Almost all the counter steering videos I've seen simply say push left or right. I believe it's a confusing point for beginners.

    Here's what many people fail to mention when explaining why counter-steering works like it does: Sit on your bike and press the left handlebar forward and slightly lean the bike left. Now look at the alignment of the frame relative to the front wheel. The frame is now just slightly angled to the left. THAT is why when you push the left handlebar forward, the bike veers left. You're not turning the front wheel to turn the direction of the bike, since that's pretty much a physical impossibility due to the gyro effect of the rotating mass. You're redirecting the REAR wheel's path to the left via the connection to the frame, which is connected to the front wheel on a hinge, so the bike goes left. You are applying force to the handlebars , which are connected directly to the front wheel, but you're not turning the front wheel. You're changing the angle of the rear wheel relative to the front wheel via the frame. And that's why counter-steering works the way it does.

    The change in behavior is caused by the gyroscopic effect of the front wheel. The wheel actually causes the bike to be pulled as the effect kicks in. While you got it right, it's just one of the laws of physics. The press technique is a great way to learn. Thanks!

    Thanks for doing this video. I had watched other countersteering videos and came away still not completely understanding the concept. I like the way you broke it down with the back explanation for why you do it because that helped it make sense. I tried to ride the same way I would ride a bicycle and now I understand the physics behind why that won't work. You can steer a bicycle without needing countersteering because you weigh much more than the bicycle does and so you can steer it just by shifting your weight. Unless you are a total fatass, your motorcycle weighs more than you do and, thus, you can't steer it by shifting your body weight the way you can a bicycle. Now I get it.

    I have a motorcycle and have riden it a few times and naturally turn, but if your turning the wheel in the opposite direction even if it makes you lean in the direction you want to go wouldn't the direction of the wheel still make the bike go right (if you are pusing the left handle bar)? Or does the wheel straighten out in the direction of the lean once you actually start leaning?

    Actually, you shouldn't lean your body right on low speeds. Instead, you should turn your hips and shoulders towards were you go. This allows for more sensitive balancing and easier view of what coming in front of you. Just like Motocross riders do in difficult terrain. It applies to other bikes as well...

    As a very young kid when I drove a dirt bike high enough speed and even now when just cycling down steep hills at high enough speed (+50kmh) I don't ever remember conciously making a effort to press one way to steer the opposite way...so I think this is something that probably come naturally as you find you balance.... however to start a sharp turn at high speed even on a bicycle I will often counter steer to lean and then pull handle bars in to the side i want to turn...what confusing is I don't see this happening here so is it just because the turns he is doing is not sharp enough?

  • @ShttnBullets247

    Straightening the bike back up is as simple as just relieving the pressure of the press then right?

    • @IceBoNeZ
      @IceBoNeZ 10 років тому

      Yes, when you wish to straighten again after a turn, you can either pull back very gently on the inside bar, or, push forward very gently on the outside bar, whichever feels more comfortable for you, until the bike's path starts straighten, and come back under you, standing you upright again and moving straight ahead forward again.
      It's all about push pull, just make sure you do it gently, as it doesn't take much pressure at all to turn a bike at speed, the slightest touch can initiate a turn, and it also saves you using lots of energy trying to turn using any other methods! lol
      Also remember, the correct amount of throttle/speed required to maintain a given turn angle.

  • @RBEmerson
    @RBEmerson 7 років тому

    After the part about the transition from steering to countersteering, I'm sorry but this is so wrong in so many places.
    Changing direction does not come from shifting weight. It's all in controlling the front wheel with the bars. Weight shift controls lean angle. Sit bolt upright on the saddle, shove the bars as needed, and the bike will change direction every time. Lean off to one side without moving the bars (harder to do than it seems - almost any move will means a slight tug on the bars) and the most you can hope for is a slow change in direction.
    Newton's First Law says a body at rest stays at rest unless acted on by an external force (a rock doesn't just decide to move). It says a body in motion stays in motion unless acted on by an external force. (It's easier to push a moving car then to start it moving) It says a body in motion will move in a straight line unless acted on by an external force. (Spin a bucket at the end of a piece of rope and it goes in a circle until the rope breaks and stops tugging - the bucket will keep in going in the direction it was moving when the rope broke - or tangent to the arc of motion, to get a little more technical)
    (For anyone who cares, the Second Law is about describing the forces mentioned in the First Law. The Third Law is the "for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction" law.)
    The rider is pulled _outside_ of the turn when the bike changes direction (the rider "wants" to go straight while the bike changes direction - rope and bucket time). Since the bike leans into the turn, the rider is mostly pushed down on the saddle. How much lean and pushing happens is tied to the speed of the bike and the tightness of the turn. Low speed sweeper - not much happening. High speed tight turn - the push becomes more obvious. Inertia flipping the rider forward in a turn? You flunked physics 101.
    I gave up at 4:36. I ran out of fingers for counting the problems. Please, read a book like David Hough's Proficient Motorcycling or Bernt Spiegel's The Upper Half of the Motorcycle or material from MSF and then try a how to turn video.
    (my apologies if I've doubled my post - I wrote something here and it's gone)

    Your explanation is incorrect. The reason counter-steering works is that above a certain speed the force generated by gyroscopic precession is greater than the force created by the drag generated by a geometric change (ie. handlebar steering the front wheel).

    • @daveg6745
      @daveg6745 9 років тому +3

      pilot2w when moving at faster than parking lot speeds, press left to go left (and press right to go right). The 'press' (to the left or right) is what causes the bike to begin the requisite LEAN (to the left... or right) that is necessary in order for a 'turn' to take place. Once you have 'pressed' (and leaned), then you will no loner continue 'pressing' the bar; the bar will 'come back' to a more neutral position. This entire process is referred to as COUNTER STEERING...and until it becomes ingrained in you as second nature, the question you ask is quite relevant: "will you crash?". Indeed - you might! YOu are correct that you brain's natural response will be to try turning the handlebar AWAY from (avoid going toward) the direction perceived as presenting the danger (e.g. oncoming car, gravel, curb, etc.)... unless counter steering is ingrained in your muscle memory for handling adverse avoidance situations). Unfortunately, turning the handlebar AWAY (momentarily forcing the front wheel to point in the direction AWAY from the path you are trying to avoid) causes the bike to LEAN IN THE DIRECTION ON THE SIDE YOU WERE TRYING TO AVOID IN THE FIRST PLACE, thus setting up the bike to turn in toward the hazard (instead of away from it).
      THIS IS WHY IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL TO PRACTICE COUNTER STEERING. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE MANEUVERING AROUND (AVOIDING) OBJECTS USING COUNTERSTEERING. HARD HARD COUNTER STEERING.

    • @tarran7549
      @tarran7549 8 років тому +1

    • @RBEmerson
      @RBEmerson 7 років тому +1

      It's hard to know exactly what's going on, but it's probably something in your thinking (not being mean here). Turn right, and there's that nice curb or fog line on the side of the road. It's a nice friendly guide on where to be. Turning left, all you've got, if you're lucky, is a yellow line and then there's a bunch of traffic coming the other way - eek!
      It's been a while since you posted but if you're still having a problem, ride a route with only left turns (in a housing development, for example). Think about what's bothering you. I'll bet it's that oncoming traffic or maybe just having a lot of open road on your left. Anyway, spend some time thinking about how you feel. And then think back to whether or not what worried you ever happened (I hope it's not the traffic LOL). Think about what you felt when it came out the way you wanted. And hang onto that.

    They way they taught steering in Victoria (Australia) is to look where you want to go and your body will naturally follow, leaning the bike slightly. This really simplifies things and teaches you to also look ahead/where you are about to turn.

    I believe this same principal of pressing the opposite direction works the same way on a mountain bike or any type of bicycle. When I think about it you don't physically turn the steering column on the bicycle either at high speeds. Just a lean combined with a press. I don't ride motorcycles YET but I'm looking into my MSF course and gathering all the knowledge I can before I go in blindly. Great video, by the way!

    When you pick up speed and you're pressing left are you pressing the handle forward or you pressing the handle down

  • @Stimpy77
    @Stimpy77 8 років тому +1

    I try to picture the bike on a straight z-axis, and you want to go like an aircraft to turn left, how? How does an airplane do it? Roll left and lift, which is more effective and natural than just yaw (steering left). How do you roll left? Well if you picture your bike to be going down a perfectly round tunnel so the top of your head is touching the top of the tunnel and the bottom of the wheels are touching the bottom of the tunnel, naturally the wheels must shift to the right to cause the vehicle to roll its upper body to the left. Then open the throttle a little and viola .. you're turning naturally, without having to excessively yaw left.

  • @Jesperrescue
    @Jesperrescue 10 років тому +2

    counter-steering is the key of fast turning at higher speed. this technique is something that you "just do" without thinking about it while riding a bike and most riders only discover it after someone tells them what they actually are doing. try to let the hands of the steering and try leaning with the body weight and u'll see what i mean by it's "almost" impossible to change direction without counter steering at speeds above some 20-25km/h
    Something i think you should have mentioned in the video is how sensitive this technique is, if you force a strong pressure on the handle bar u gonna begin a very sharp lean and turn brutally (or even crash if ur not prepared)

    • @eskertoo
      @eskertoo 6 років тому

      Dead right...it just comes naturally.But when you realise how it works you start to experiment.I had a Tuono 1000R and it was great to lean on those wide bars on a bend ,apply some extra throttle on the exit and get a wonderful sense of control.I actually know a rider who told me he "used to steer normally but now I turn the bars the opposite way!"

  • @robtbomba3491
    @robtbomba3491 9 років тому

    The best way to show what you're talking about is to watch a video like Speedway Grand Prix of Poland ... great racing and counter-steering in an exaggerated way. Watch some of the MotoGP, SBK, BSB or AMA racing in slow motion ... the same thing happens, of course.

  • @broderp
    @broderp 5 років тому

    Simple concept -
    Turn/drift towards left - Push on the left handle.
    Turn/drift right - Push on the right handle bar.
    Thinking about the wheel direction will only confuse you. (Except at that magical speed where you must turn left to go left and turn right to go right....)

  • @LALOTEH
    @LALOTEH 9 років тому

    By "pressing" left is it the same as pushing down on the left handlebar instead of turning it too the left like a bicycle so if I want to go left around 20mph you would turn the handlebars right and lean left? I'm confused
    I have my msf course in California 5/25/15 my only concern is the whole counter steering

    It should also be mentioned: when you counter steer... The wheel isn't always pointing the opposite direction. It slides inline. Well... "Slides" inline.

  • @kawaiijp6638
    @kawaiijp6638 6 років тому

    Many motorcyclists call this maneuver “counter steering,” though this name is somewhat inaccurate as you won’t be turning the handlebars of your bike much at all. As you go into the turn, push on the bike with half of your body on the outside of the turn. For example, in a right turn, you would push on your motorcycle with your left buttock and leg, which will cause your bike to lean into the turn. It may also help you to apply pressure to the inside handlebar in a downward fashion. You won’t actually be using your handlebars to steer, only to help distribute your weight as you lean into the turn.
    is it true? as i know at high speed if you steer your handlebar suddenly your bike will crash.

  • @PrinceKlutz
    @PrinceKlutz 10 років тому

    A better demonstration of counterweighting is in the Ride Like a Cop low-speed manuervering type vids, where there is a camera looking at the rider. You can see the bike leaned over and turning with the rider still upright. It's hard to see in a rider's view.

    You have to countersteer from the moment the wheels strarts rolling. There is no magic shift at 15 mph., you contersteer at say 1 km/h and less.

  • @thefivepoints
    @thefivepoints 6 років тому

    Why do people always try and over complicate this? The bike just leans left/right to turn left/right and most people will do this naturally.

  • @baldeagle1504
    @baldeagle1504 10 років тому

    The gyroscopic effect on the turning wheels is what causes the motorcycle to lean and thus turn when you counter weight. If you recall high school physics, the movement of a rotating wheel is 90 degrees around the wheel from where the force is applied. If you press forward on the right handlebar it's like applying force to the right on the back of the front wheel, causing the top (90 deg) of the wheel to move or lean to the right. It is not effective at low speeds since the wheels are not turning fast enough for gyroscopic effect to occur so you need to steer into the turn and counter weight in a slow speed turn.
