Nicolás Ramírez Quiroz Don't you get it this whole song is about moving on. She knows many of her fans miss her old style in English rain but in here she is saying that you must move on and can't stay in the past. She says "say I've changed call me cold call me what you like"
These are things people have said. People have said that she has changed and she is not being herself but in this song she is showing people that this is herself. She has just evolved. People change and not necessarily in a bad way. She says "never know what it's like on the other side".
We as fans do no know what it is like for her on the other side so we mustn't judge.
English rain was a great era for Gabrielle Aplin but no one stays the same forever
This is why she says "Did you think I'd stay?"
Lots of other musicians evolve and change so why shouldn't she?

I find the lyrics of this song so unsettling because I am now going through something that resembles this story and letting go of someone you love due to circumstance is the hardest thing to do. But you can't just stay holding on to yesterday. Sometimes you've got to move on and trust that if things are meant to be something will bring you two back together, eventually. But gorgeous song, Gabrielle. Hard to take, but beautiful as always.

Can everyone please stop with the "English rain vibes" comments. Can't you see that she is clearly saying in her song that that was the past and this is now. English rain was a great era for Gabrielle Aplin and don't get me wrong I still listen to it all the time but since she has experimented with new music styles and instruments and all her other music is amazing too. Yes English rain was how we all thought Gabrielle Aplin was but now we can see the bigger picture I realise it was an era of her music but didn't define her. Yes English rain style suits her a lot but personally I love the rock feel to light up the dark and the feel of her recent music which I perceive to be pop but with her own Gabrielle Aplin twist on it.
This song is telling us that we need to stop comparing everything to English rain because that was then and this is now. I believe the line " why you looking at me. It's not what you want. It's not what you need" is saying that if you are still holding on to English rain and not giving her newer music a chance then are you really a fan. Why do you stick around? Just hoping that something reminiscent of English rain will come out again?
If you listen to the song again considering this you might understand it differently.
Although I do not know everything and this could be absolutely nothing to do with the meaning of the song but this is how I interpreted it.

I thought it had the most jams, layers, and interesting songs from her.

I DON'T KNOW WHY you are not cranking out a music video a month - I don't care if it's performance at a studio - With a top of the line gorgeous voice, you need to be busy in music recording, no matter what else you are into. Way to much talent and amazingly beautiful sounds to not be hard at it. If you are, then good. The world can certainly use what you have to offer.
