Oh hell...it's MUCH better for you to eat, then burn off the excess weight through workouts, than to starve oneself, then try to function physically, at a high level. It doesn't work...kills your energy, and you never properly maintain the right consumption process. Just not good for you. And MOST wrestlers are in excellent condition, and NOT overweight in the slightest to begin with. It's a Coaches job to help his wrestlers know, and help them decide a good, healthy weight for them to compete at anyway. If he cares about the person and not just his record.
Greg Howard yeah man...I did it for years..2 time State Champ in 83 and 84, 189 lbs. Funny thing is in the 8th grade, i was 112..THEN, i said to hell with it, and went with weight as i wrestled...but I grew tremendously. In height too..I know every wrestler does it...
At the high school level-or any level-other factors are taken into account. If a coach has three really good wrestlers around the same weight, he’ll make sure that they all wrestle in varsity rather at three different weight classes. Even the wrestlers themselves, they rather be in varsity. For a really great wrestler, I hate it when they starve themselves. I had a teammate in high school who was 150 in the offseason and wrestled at 119 during the season.
