I traveled to the Philippines' most remote (and dangerous) island called Tawi Tawi, in search of the Badjao (Bajau) Tribe -- who can hold their breath for up to 13 minutes while free diving. Guys - I have been coming to the Philippines for the last 8 years and I've traveled to more than 50 Filipino islands - but I'm telling you that nothing compares to what I experienced in Tawi Tawi.
The Badjao (Bajau) people are so kind and genuine, despite not even having a Jollibee in their community (it's hard to find this around the country!). I hope you enjoy watching this story and I welcome any of your comments or questions in the comments below!
Also, in case you were wondering, I found multiple sources online showing that the Badjaos (Bajaus) can hold their breath for up to 13 minutes, including a National Geographic article which you can also search for on Google. It's incredibly impressive and the Badjaos (Bajaus) are true superhumans!

I AM FROM TAWI-TAWI! Thank you for visiting mindanao but Bongao is just the tip of an iceberg, We have lots of island in tawi-tawi, lots of beaches. Life is beautiful and simple there, I miss home. :)

loved how they said it themselves...that they are filipinos, too. i saw it in the way they greeted you and welcomed you and offered to share their meal, no matter how little they have. it's hard to explain, but somehow, no matter if it's a tribe on a remote mountain or a tribe on a remote island or just anyone on the streets of a simple province, you'll see and feel that generous heart
This video was really a surprise! Singaporean here, but I was in Tawi-Tawi just a mere five months ago and this video brought back very fond memories of the land and the hospitality and friendliness of the local Badjao people! Love your authentic reporting, Drew!

The police take photos of specific foreigners and send them to local gangsters, informing them about which foreigners can be kidnapped and which cannot.
This is by far the best UA-cam video I've ever seen. This should be given an Emmy. I appreciated you going to the Badjao house to eat lunch. As you can see what they served you was probably worth a couple of days meals for them yet they served it to you because theyre right your kind hearted people. And you giving them money made my day. I pray for the day that the Philippines will be one day be rid of divisiveness and poverty. Tawi-Tawi is far from dangerous compared to the neighboring Jolo and Basilan, but even Jolo and Basilan are now becoming more and more peaceful and progressive. Thanks for showing us the beauty of Tawi-Tawi and its people ❤

This documentary is a complete lie. They dont use those little goggles. The streets are actually covered in garbage, just like the beaches. The locals cant free dive worth a shit and actually use automotive style air compressors. The images used of beautiful beaches are only those near the major resorts, the rest of the Country are homes built on large chunks of dead coral, with thousands of goats feasting on the plastic and garbage on the beaches. They cant freedive anywhere near the ability of the world record holders. Its amazing how the BBC and rest of the mainstream media completely lies.
They are so great, the world record for holding breath is only 3 minutes and 35 seconds, they will be champions in any water competition!
The locals look very pure, hope they can preserve their traditional culture!

They can hold their breath because they have larger spleen in their body as what National Geography documented in one of their episodes. The Badjao tribe are the real nomadic Sea Gypsies.

I'd rather be begging for money and food in peaceful land areas in the Philippines rather than beg for peace from terrorists, this is way back decade ago. One day they'll get back to their homes because it's regaining it's peace/peaceful now. They are victims and people should understand why they left their homes.

The Sama history is kind of unique and also tragic. Originally, the true Sama are nomadic. They live in big houseboats that used to sail in family flotillas from island to island, from the coasts of mainland Mindanao, to the islands of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and the coasts of Sabah, Kalimantan, and even Sulawesi. They lived by trading fish (and luxury products like pearl or trepang) for agricultural products like rice. They have never had a unified government. Each flotilla was independent. When nation-states began to form, they got caught between the borders. Philippine Sama can not sail to Malaysia and Indonesia freely anymore, and vice-versa, resulting in most of them settling in littoral villages. With the advent of commercial fishing, they could not compete with big boats either. Add to that the final straw: the separatist conflicts that cut off the region for decades. The end result is deep poverty.
Tawi-Tawi is only just starting to reopen again, since the terrorist kidnappers/pirates have largely been contained by military campaigns. Which is why you can now fly there. I hope it continues.

The ancient Mermen (Min) fishermen that used spears to fish with that descend from Japheth's line and the Po Valley is located in northern Italy and Seidon represents the ancient Sidonians that descend from Canaan the son of Ham.
According to legend Odutiodauwa the ancestor of the Yoruba people of Africa was the son of La murudu and Lamu Island is located just off the shore of Kenya in the Indian Ocean.

Enki (Enkey) and the name of the company Enkia which provides artificial intelligence software for web applications and if we change his name to Anki (son of An and Kai) is the original name of Enki, and it means he is the son of An, short for Anu (Noah) and it is similar to Ankh as in Ankey the Egyptian key to Life and the connection to the ANKH gene in humans which is involved in skeletal development.
Notice the "key" sound in Kemet the name of ancient Egypt and the word keyhole pronounced ˈkēˌ(h)ōl and the name for the African Keyhole Garden

As a freediver and someone who's goes spearfishing regularly genuinely don't think that time I'd possible. I have spent time with the deepest and most elite freedivers athletes on the planet and iv seen what they can do.

It’s reported in the National Geographic. In 2018, the result of the DNA was released.

I love your channel very much! After being sick with covid-19, I trained my lungs and could not breathe for 5 minutes, but this is on the shore. Now a maximum of 2 minutes when spearfishing.
Tawitawi is peaceful as any other place in the Philippines. The media whose workers lived in Luzon often portray it as bad. In other UA-cam videos it is often coordinated with the Tourism office of the LGU and PNP so no issues. Did you know that Malaysia supported by UK is the one made it sure there is a conflict in Mindanao because of the interest in oil fields surrounding Sabah just because of the former Senator. There are Malaysian boots as part of the observation group based in Mindanao along with Australia Indonesia and Japan. As I said Tawi Tawi or BARRM Region is as peaceful as it can be.

Yes we are very similar to you Malaysians and Indonesian we are IndoMalays we came from same ancestors we have history’s of Datu, Rajah, Sultan’s and we consists of different tribes too and in my opinion we have our own cultures than my country 😅 since we got colonized by the Spaniards and Americans Filipinos culture is related to that but the Muslims here has their own culture and traditions we are like outcasts here 😅 that’s why we have BARMM I think even many Filipinos doesn’t know much about us 😅

I wanted to visit Tawi-tawi, Sulu & Zamboanga. Perhaps, explore the islands, eat some local food and I always wanted to see the colorful Vinta Festival. 😄👍

Jolo Sulu??? don't go if you don't have a local who can guide you around, my brother who is in the army is stationed there and there's a lot of Abu Sayyaf in that part of the country.

Really? That's cool and it makes sense. Humans relied on the sea for hundreds of years, makes sense we'd develop some tolerance to it... Now in the modern age there is no longer a need. Very interesting how the body adapts. Thank you for your input

It's also wild to think that back when people breathed less through their mouths and held their breath much more, no one had crooked teeth or smth like that. But after it became "normal" to do so, we see more problems with crooked teeth, underbites, and overbites as well.

We haven't out-evolved it, humans can still have the capacity to do this you just need to literally do it since childhood. Most people underestimate how much our bodies can adapt. I'm from Davao, I have known many fishing divers who can do 5-8 minutes, it's no genetics, you just do it out of a necessity in childhood using breathing techniques and years or practice. Your body eventually learns to manage the lack of oxygen and slowly push the survival instinct of needing oxygen further and further throughout the years.
They thought me exercises and techniques and I can only last 2-3 minutes but it's a massive improvement from like 40 seconds or so.

"Most dangerous island" never really applied to Tawi-Tawi. It just got caught in the crossfire. The holder of that title is the neighboring island group of Sulu. Which even today, is still mostly off-limits to foreigners without express permission of the military.
The Sama people, whose home islands are Tawi-Tawi, haven't really participated in the separatist movements that ravaged that region for decades. They're victims of the terrorist groups themselves, which is why so many have fled to Malaysia and the northern islands of the Philippines.
Exactly. He's just doing this for dramatic effect. Before the trip, talk about how dangerous it is. Then during the trip, talk about how nice the people are and how safe it is. Tawi-Tawi was never on the level of Jolo or Basilan.

You should visit Tubathaha reef in Sulu sea as well as Balabac Island. Unfortunately the US Armed forces will have a base there and hope they preserve the environment.
