This is by far the best UA-cam video I've ever seen. This should be given an Emmy. I appreciated you going to the Badjao house to eat lunch. As you can see what they served you was probably worth a couple of days meals for them yet they served it to you because theyre right your kind hearted people. And you giving them money made my day. This documentary is a complete lie. They dont use those little goggles. The streets are actually covered in garbage, just like the beaches. The locals cant free dive worth a shit and actually use automotive style air compressors. The images used of beautiful beaches are only those near the major resorts, the rest of the Country are homes built on large chunks of dead coral, with thousands of goats feasting on the plastic and garbage on the beaches. They cant freedive anywhere near the ability of the world record holders. Its amazing how the BBC and rest of the mainstream media completely lies.

Tawi-Tawi is far from dangerous compared to the neighboring Jolo and Basilan, but even Jolo and Basilan are now becoming more and more peaceful and progressive. Thanks for showing us the beauty of Tawi-Tawi and its people ❤
They are so great, the world record for holding breath is only 3 minutes and 35 seconds, they will be champions in any water competition! I'd rather be begging for money and food in peaceful land areas in the Philippines rather than beg for peace from terrorists, this is way back decade ago. One day they'll get back to their homes because it's regaining it's peace/peaceful now. They are victims and people should understand why they left their homes.

The Sama history is kind of unique and also tragic. Originally, the true Sama are nomadic. They live in big houseboats that used to sail in family flotillas from island to island, from the coasts of mainland Mindanao, to the islands of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and the coasts of Sabah, Kalimantan, and even Sulawesi. They lived by trading fish (and luxury products like pearl or trepang) for agricultural products like rice. They have never had a unified government. Each flotilla was independent. When nation-states began to form, they got caught between the borders. Philippine Sama can not sail to Malaysia and Indonesia freely anymore, and vice-versa, resulting in most of them settling in littoral villages. With the advent of commercial fishing, they could not compete with big boats either. Add to that the final straw: the separatist conflicts that cut off the region for decades. The end result is deep poverty. Tawi-Tawi is only just starting to reopen again, since the terrorist kidnappers/pirates have largely been contained by military campaigns. Which is why you can now fly there. I hope it continues.

Tawi-Tawi is not the most dangerous place in the Philippines. You're confused with Jolo or Basilan. Badjaos are very peaceful and aren't extremist Muslims. Hence why they drink alcohol and most don't wear hijabs
Hi Drew, I saw this video on Day 2 of my month backpacking in the Philippines and it inspired me to go. Everyone in the Visayas (locals, other backpackers, the media and my travel insurance) said I shouldn’t go. But I found this video to be more persuasive than anything else so I was so interested and nothing anyone said could convince me otherwise so I just went all by myself ready for any adventure and it all exceeded my expectations. Such a unique and real experience that everyone else misses out on when they dismiss this place. The next place I went from Tawi-Tawi was Palawan and it wasn’t unique at all, full of familiarity for a westerner. Thanks for sharing this as without your video, I wouldn’t have known to go here
As a freediver and someone who's goes spearfishing regularly genuinely don't think that time I'd possible. I have spent time with the deepest and most elite freedivers athletes on the planet and iv seen what they can do. I would love to see the unedited version where they dive for my own education🙏. Jolo Sulu??? don't go if you don't have a local who can guide you around, my brother who is in the army is stationed there and there's a lot of Abu Sayyaf in that part of the country.
Yes we are very similar to you Malaysians and Indonesian we are IndoMalays we came from same ancestors we have history’s of Datu, Rajah, Sultan’s and we consists of different tribes too and in my opinion we have our own cultures than my country 😅 since we got colonized by the Spaniards and Americans Filipinos culture is related to that but the Muslims here has their own culture and traditions we are like outcasts here 😅 that’s why we have BARMM I think even many Filipinos doesn’t know much about us 😅

Tawi-Tawi is such an underrated destination. If you are a Filipino and want to experience a different culture in your own country you'll be amazed here.
I'd go in a heartbeat if travelling there could be just a bit more convenient than it is now. Don't have a lot of vacation time, so I'm always in a hurry - which I hate. Some day, I will go.
It's cool that some people live like we're "created" to do. Many many years ago it was common for people to hold their breath for up to 10minutes - we've just out-evolved our own nature, so we don't have to do so anymore. It's also wild to think that back when people breathed less through their mouths and held their breath much more, no one had crooked teeth or smth like that. But after it became "normal" to do so, we see more problems with crooked teeth, underbites, and overbites as well.
We haven't out-evolved it, humans can still have the capacity to do this you just need to literally do it since childhood. Most people underestimate how much our bodies can adapt. I'm from Davao, I have known many fishing divers who can do 5-8 minutes, it's no genetics, you just do it out of a necessity in childhood using breathing techniques and years or practice. Your body eventually learns to manage the lack of oxygen and slowly push the survival instinct of needing oxygen further and further throughout the years. They thought me exercises and techniques and I can only last 2-3 minutes but it's a massive improvement from like 40 seconds or so.
Tawitawi is peaceful as any other place in the Philippines. The media whose workers lived in Luzon often portray it as bad. In other UA-cam videos it is often coordinated with the Tourism office of the LGU and PNP so no issues. Did you know that Malaysia supported by UK is the one made it sure there is a conflict in Mindanao because of the interest in oil fields surrounding Sabah just because of the former Senator. There are Malaysian boots as part of the observation group based in Mindanao along with Australia Indonesia and Japan. As I said Tawi Tawi or BARRM Region is as peaceful as it can be.

I teach swim lessons and taught this woman’s son how to swim. She came from a tribe similar if not the the same one. She said they used to deep dive and hold their breath up to 10 minutes and I had the wonderful pleasure of teaching her son who is a naturally amazing swimmer!

I'd rather be begging for money and food in peaceful land areas in the Philippines rather than beg for peace from terrorists, this is way back decade ago. One day they'll get back to their homes because it's regaining it's peace/peaceful now. They are victims and people should understand why they left their homes.

The Sama history is kind of unique and also tragic. Originally, the true Sama are nomadic. They live in big houseboats that used to sail in family flotillas from island to island, from the coasts of mainland Mindanao, to the islands of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and the coasts of Sabah, Kalimantan, and even Sulawesi. They lived by trading fish (and luxury products like pearl or trepang) for agricultural products like rice. They have never had a unified government. Each flotilla was independent. When nation-states began to form, they got caught between the borders. Philippine Sama can not sail to Malaysia and Indonesia freely anymore, and vice-versa, resulting in most of them settling in littoral villages. With the advent of commercial fishing, they could not compete with big boats either. Add to that the final straw: the separatist conflicts that cut off the region for decades. The end result is deep poverty.
Tawi-Tawi is only just starting to reopen again, since the terrorist kidnappers/pirates have largely been contained by military campaigns. Which is why you can now fly there. I hope it continues.

Tawi-Tawi is not the most dangerous place in the Philippines. You're confused with Jolo or Basilan. Badjaos are very peaceful and aren't extremist Muslims. Hence why they drink alcohol and most don't wear hijabs

Hi Drew, I saw this video on Day 2 of my month backpacking in the Philippines and it inspired me to go. Everyone in the Visayas (locals, other backpackers, the media and my travel insurance) said I shouldn’t go. But I found this video to be more persuasive than anything else so I was so interested and nothing anyone said could convince me otherwise so I just went all by myself ready for any adventure and it all exceeded my expectations. Such a unique and real experience that everyone else misses out on when they dismiss this place.
The next place I went from Tawi-Tawi was Palawan and it wasn’t unique at all, full of familiarity for a westerner.

As a freediver and someone who's goes spearfishing regularly genuinely don't think that time I'd possible. I have spent time with the deepest and most elite freedivers athletes on the planet and iv seen what they can do.

I'd go in a heartbeat if travelling there could be just a bit more convenient than it is now. Don't have a lot of vacation time, so I'm always in a hurry - which I hate. Some day, I will go.

It's also wild to think that back when people breathed less through their mouths and held their breath much more, no one had crooked teeth or smth like that. But after it became "normal" to do so, we see more problems with crooked teeth, underbites, and overbites as well.

We haven't out-evolved it, humans can still have the capacity to do this you just need to literally do it since childhood. Most people underestimate how much our bodies can adapt. I'm from Davao, I have known many fishing divers who can do 5-8 minutes, it's no genetics, you just do it out of a necessity in childhood using breathing techniques and years or practice. Your body eventually learns to manage the lack of oxygen and slowly push the survival instinct of needing oxygen further and further throughout the years.
They thought me exercises and techniques and I can only last 2-3 minutes but it's a massive improvement from like 40 seconds or so.

Tawitawi is peaceful as any other place in the Philippines. The media whose workers lived in Luzon often portray it as bad. In other UA-cam videos it is often coordinated with the Tourism office of the LGU and PNP so no issues. Did you know that Malaysia supported by UK is the one made it sure there is a conflict in Mindanao because of the interest in oil fields surrounding Sabah just because of the former Senator. There are Malaysian boots as part of the observation group based in Mindanao along with Australia Indonesia and Japan. As I said Tawi Tawi or BARRM Region is as peaceful as it can be.

I teach swim lessons and taught this woman’s son how to swim. She came from a tribe similar if not the the same one. She said they used to deep dive and hold their breath up to 10 minutes and I had the wonderful pleasure of teaching her son who is a naturally amazing swimmer!
